Description

This forum has been set up to discuss all aspects of moths in Ireland. Any queries relating to recording of moths including starting off, details of recent catches, migrants, identification queries and any other relevant topics are welcome.

It is open to all wishing to discuss Irish moth related topics.

Beginners and the experienced equally welcome.

This forum is not the place to discuss rearing of imported or exotic/tropical specimens, or swapping of specimens.

More than 1300 species of moths have been recorded in Ireland and make up an important branch of Ireland's flora and fauna. Interest in moths is fast growing as a part of the study of natural history. Moths are a good indicator of biodiversity and give a good indication of how nature and wildlife is fairing.

There are various methods of recording moths, but by far the most common is by using light traps. The moths enter the trap, settle down. They can be counted, photographed and released unharmed. Most recorders run light traps overnight in their garden and it not unusual for 100-200 species recorded annually in urban gardens.

The more moth recorders, the more we learn about the abundance and distribution of moths in Ireland
