I seem to have lost the announcement that has the price - but it is only a 4
week class so I think it is around $60.
Mary is right it is about teaching retrieve for obedience competition, but if
you are just interested in having some fun with your dog and working with a long
time and very good clicker trainer - it is a good class.

Deb Jones is holding a Clicker Retrieve class at Cleveland All Breed on Thursday nights in February. Per an email from her a few minutes ago, there are still a few places open in the class.
I think it will be oriented to towards teaching a competition obedience retrieve - but I think that could be fun for anyone who wants to get out of the house with their dogs in the winter and learn something new!
FOCUS ON RETRIEVES CLASS Thursday - 2/04/10-2/25/10 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
I'm not sure of the cost - email me if you're interested and I should have the price by then (Or Julie probably knows!)
Hey guys, this is mostly for Ed and Dan who have been through this recently. :)
Client asked for suggestions on good reads for getting your dog ready for a new
baby. If you guys know of anyone that gives new baby seminars as well, that
would be helpful. Thanks,
Laura
Congrats - we have 2 obedience trials a year at CABTC - hope to see you and
Ellie there.
As of April 1 mixed breeds can be registered with the AKC and compete in
performance events. I plan to register Woody.
Oh and also there are some great new titling classes and fun non titling classes
in Obedience that are great stepping stones to competing in a full class. One
is a pre-novice (all on lead) and one of the others is called Wild card - you
can skip 1 exercise of your choice at what ever level you are competing.

Just to share my good news. I submitted photos of Ellie to the AKC's PAL/ILP program and just got the certificate today - she's now has limited registration as a Chinese Shar-pei! If I can get her training up to speed, she can now compete in AKC agility and obedience! We're most likely to try for Obedience first since that's what we've been practicing! It should be interesting...
If you haven't already seen it or ordered it, I highly recommend Jane Killion's, When Pig's Fly. I think it will replace Emma Parson's, Click to Calm book for me as the one I recommend for it's explanation of basic and advanced training concepts.
The author covers so many things - and explains the concepts, steps and behaviors so well. I really love the book - cover to cover.
Initially, because she wrote a bunch of articles for Clean Run, I thought that the book was focused more on training dogs for performance, like agility. But the book is really focused on regular behaviors that can be difficult to train with a less "biddable" dog. And for us, as pet dog trainers, I think we often end up seeing clients that even if they have an "easy" to train dog, often they've made enough training mistakes that they now have a dog that is harder to train - and is now similar to a dog that is just naturally harder to train. So, the book is quite useful for just about anyone. I really can't imagine anyone who wouldn't gain great insight from this book.
Here's a great line from the chapter about "problem behaviors". Leading up to this, she talks about how humans have been breeding dogs for specific purposes for quite a long time - barking to alert us about prey or strangers, guarding to scare off intruders or danger in general. We BRED into dogs many behaviors that we now find problematic. She says, " It is not his fault if the world has changed and there is no longer a job market for his skills"
Great book, highly recommend it. I'm really hoping to use the tools in the book to bring Ellie back around to enjoying training more - especially in distracting environments (which means - any location that is not our living room!)
Coll thanks for the information. I know Kathy - she is a member at CABTC and
she is very experienced in showing in obedience. I can say if you want some top
tips on how to best show in the obedience rings - she knows lots of them. It is
good to hear you two hooked up.

It's a decent list and will be better with more clicker trainers who are interested in obedience get involved.
I started taking private obedience lessons with Ellie and Gus with Kathy Sutliff. She offers classes on her property out in Columbia Station/Medina. She's extremely experienced and is either a provisional or full-fledged obedience judge. She is mostly all-positive - though she may use minor corrections with her own dog. She is willing to accommodate and work with all positive people and is super nice about it. I really like her.
If anyone wants contact information, just let me know!
I know of a family looking for a nice-tempered medium to small sized dog. I don't think breed matters as much as behavior. They'd like one year or older, house-trained and nice. If anyone has run into such a dog, let me know!
Not sure of the age of the children but I think
Clicking with your dog by Peggy Tillman is good with nice drawings.
GOOD DOG! - KIDS TEACH KIDS ABOUT DOG BEHAVIOR AND TRAINING
by Evelyn Pang & Hilary Louie
101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance has great pictures
Those are the ones I can think of right now.
My lastest book that I think is good for all dog owners is Speaking for Spot by
Dr. Nancy Kay DVM.
Great book on advocating for your dog with your vet. But I think there good
advice for being a good advocate for your in life!

I thought I'd share my training moment. I can't
remember if I posted that Shadow was officially diagnoised with Diabetes last
week. We started Insulin yesterday. I have to admit I've been acting like a
helpless owner the last couple days thinking I'll never be able to do shots and
Shadow will never get use to it. I was throwing myself into a panic.
Then "lightbulb moment" I said you have to think like a trainer. They
get animals in the zoo to allow shots, "you can do this". So I dusted
off the Treat and Train and tonight's shot was a breeze, Shadow was so excited
to see the Treat and Train that the shot wasn't even an issue! Hopefully that
will continue and it will make shots alone easier. Right now Todd and I are
doing them together but obviously that won't always be the case.

Surprisingly Shadow's blood test came back NOT
showing diabetes. My doctor said she's only remembers this once before and the
dog developed it later on. So we will monitor her closely. I'm going to treat
her like she has it by changing her diet slightly to a more protein/fiber diet.
I'm going to test her with a glucose monitor now just to get her use to it.
Thankfully with clicker training I think this will work out okay. Now I have
just a little time to breath and can practice with her before I feel the panic
of getting it right when the time comes.
In the mean time I'll educate myself on diabetes in dogs and I'll be ready for
it when it comes.
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers for Shadow in the last couple days.
Great News! Sending "keep on the healthy side" thoughts to Shadow.

I knew when Daniela chimed in it would be good. That sums it up
exactly for me. You will ether click with her or you won’t an you must be
prepared to ask lots of questions. She will take the time to answer them. If
she wasn’t so far away for me I would probably still go to her. I have had the
same mixed reviews of both Dr Nan and Dr Neil. I think my preference would be
for Dr Nan. I felt she was easier to deal with and trust.

nice on the phone and when things settle a little I might go visit her for
advice on diet and maintainance with diabetes. I don't want food advice from my
vet, I'm sure it will be prescription crap. I've already joined the yahoo group
with dogs with diabetes and learned alot since yesterday. Just kind of anxious
to get started and regulated.

I would second DGP. As a matter of fact, Dr. Decker may recommend
that. She gave me something (sold me something) called "Pain Plus"
when I went to see her. Wasn't real impressed with that but have heard
good things with DGP. Whatever was happening with Alex, though, has
worked itself out as he hasn't limped now in years! IF he showed signs
of it I would give him the pain management stuff and pound him
Glucosamine tablets.

I had Shadow on DGP for awhile and thought it was helping but then it just
stopped showing any help. The Phycox chews seemed to help too then they aren't
on the market until January. I switched to Joint Max Triple Strength and she
gets 2-3 baby asprins a day.
As of yesterday I have bigger problems, Shadow was diagnoised as being Diabetic.
I'm waiting for further bloodwork to come back and we will start insulin
treatments. So that will be a new learning experience for me. I've done shots
before on a prior dog, allergies. But there is a lot more monitoring with this
one. Thank god for clicker training. I have to work on having her let me test
alot in the beginning. I'll keep you informed of her progress. I think we caught
it early. She had no problem a month ago with a urine test, then yesterday's
urine tested showed high gluecose. Her only signs were drinking more and as a
result peeing more. She turns 8 tomorrow.

I don't have any experience with her so I can not add much on that topic, but on
the topic of alternatives to Rymadyl you might want to look into "Dog Gone Pain"
(DGP). I had several folks on some of my dog lists rave about it, so I started
Woody on it and it seems to have helped him a lot.
