I am currently attending the Arthur Ashe Institute of Urban
Health, Health Science Academy in Brooklyn, New York. At the Health
Science Academy, we do research in epidemiological studies, such as,
why is the obesity so high in New York City? , or why is the diabetes
rate so rampant in African-Americans from Caribbean descent? But, I
have a passion for the medical studies as well as the veterinary
studies. Therefore, I will like to study the correlation between
owning a pet and the emotional status of the owner.
The purpose of this research is to find a link between owing
a pet and the well- being of its owner. Pets /animals have been the
companion of man for many centuries. Many individuals seek to
discover the nature of the bond between pets and human. In
healthcare, some scientists claim that pets have a Sixth Sense and
can detect when their owner is having a medical complication, such as
a heart attack or stroke. I am trying to prove that an animal/pet can
apply good health to their owner in the aspects of emotional, medical
and financial stability.

I have found that the best Glucosamine is in liquid form...highly absorbable and the one I prefer is Syn-Flex.

Congratulations on Bella and thank you for adopting her from a shelter. By the way, my beloved 11 yr. old Akita is also named Bella- good sign for you! :-)

My Bella has had a host of operations over the years. A few suggestions:

1. Start her on Glucosomine and MSM now (need not be from pet store and no need for Condrotin). This will keep her limber and help her recover after the operation. Use it for life. Check Puritan Vitamins on line for excellent prices.

2. Start giving her low-fat, sugar free yogurt (a big tablespoon or more per day). It helps digestion and after her operation the bacteria in her system will be compromised. This will help restore her to good digestion and will make her more comfortable. This is a good thing to do for life too since labs love to eat off the street so this helps keep them healthy. After the operation she will be uncomfortable for a while but do not worry. A sling (homemade or store bought) will help tremendously for about 1-2 weeks.

Massage her to make her feel better.

Do not worry at all. Dogs are reassured by your signals. She will be stiff but she will recover.

We do not have a dog group in the Bronx yet but there is a run in Van Cortland Park.

I know this entails a toll, but if you cross the bridge at any time there is a great run beneath the bridge in Throgs Neck, Queens. Freedom Run has lots of dogs for play. Hopefully others here will have better advice.

Good luck. Bella is lucky to have found you- and you her.

Because of it, her right leg is thinner then her left. All this and

complain. Poor little thing thinks it's normal :(

We're taking her next week to a Dr. Fusko over at the animal clinic
hospital on 62nd and York. She is going to need surgery to repair her
leg. Because she's so young, they expect her to make a near to full
recovery. She may always have a slight limp but no pain. They expect
her to be able to walk and run soon after her recovery.

Before our vet appointment, I just wanted to reach out to dog owners
for any advice or suggestions.

Also, Bella is looking for playmates once she is all better. We live
over in Throgs Neck Bronx just off Randall Avenue and East Treamont.

Hi! I'm looking for dog owners new and experienced for some advice.

I adopted my precious puppy Bella, a black lab retriever from the
ASPCA just three weeks ago. She had a slight limp in her right hind
leg when we adopted her and was told it was probably a sprain but
couldn't tell for certain since they had only noticed it only the day
before. We had Xrays taken last week only to discover that she had had
a serious leg fracture near her hip probably 2-3 months ago. It had
healed badly and small piece of bone has worn away her hip socket.
Because of it, her right leg is thinner then her left. All this and
she is still such a playful and sweet puppy. Our vet told us that she
is in a lot of pain but seems to be use to it since she doesn't

The law states that dogs must have shelter, food and water.  If this dog is out in the sun without shelter from the rain and elements, call the ASPCA immediately but be sure that a rescue group can grab her once in the CACC.

Please pass this on to fellow dog lovers!

Nicole saved Foxy's life this morning: the scared puppy was running
into traffic on the Bronx River Parkway!

She's probably just under a year old and approximately 30 pounds.
She appears to be a shepherd mix. She has a very sweet disposition;
she's extremely affectionate and playful but not nippy and
frequently rolls over in a submissive position to have her belly
rubbed. She shows no sign of aggression or food protective behavior,
though she did not seem to like having her back touched. She was
found with a collar on so she is probably someone's neglected and/or
abandoned pet. She deserves better, to be sure.

The external tips of both ears are extremely infected and require
immediate medical attention; she is also moderately underweight but
appears to be in good physical health otherwise. She is currently at
the CACC in Manhattan where she will receive veterinary care and
then be put up for adoption.

However...time is the critical factor here because, as you probably
know, if she cannot be placed in a home or a local no-kill shelter,
she will ultimately have to be euthanized. My veterinary hospital
has left a message with their contact at the local dog rescue group:
A Cause for Paws but it's unlikely they will have room for another
dog.

So--please help us spread the word.

We were told that FOXY will be posted on CACC website as an
adoptable dog within the next 24 hours: www.nycacc.org
She can be found by case number: 06-12-5361

Thanks for helping!

I'm sure that if passed, the MTA would come up with a test on their
own. I would not object to that. If it will ensure safety for the
dog as well as for other passengers, I'm all for it!

That's been my suggestion all along but I wonder now if an additional test and tag would help even more...a dog that after the CGC test has been passed would be certified to have passed through the subway and bus system and is deemed to be calm in that circumstance.

Breeds do not harbor aggresiveness. It's the owners who teach their
dogs to be aggressive. I happen to be the owner of a pit bull.
He's good with everyone - always has kids and other dogs around
him. In my neighborhood, there are many pits, german shephards and
other large breeds. All good dogs. Again, it depends on how the
owner teaches their dogs regardless of breed.

As for the petition, I suggested only having dogs that have passed
the Canine Good Citizen test given by the AKC to be allowed on the
train. This will ensure that your dog is not aggressive towards ppl
and other dogs. The AKC suggested making a wallet id for dogs that
have passed the test. Only those with the id will be allowed on the
subways. Aggressive dogs will not.

For more info you can view my petition at:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/384046888

Or just visit the AKC website for details on the exam.

Cross-post far and wide. This could actually happen, but we have to
keep the
pressure up! Let the City know our pets (OK, OK- companion animals)
are
important to us! Help save lives!

FWD MSG:

WE HAVE NEVER BEEN CLOSER TO PASSING THE NYC PETS IN HOUSING BILL
WHICH IS:
a matter of LIFE OR DEATH for thousands of adoptable cats and dogs
needlessly killed each year in NYC simply due to lack of homes.

Intro 13 ( the Pets in Housing bill ) is the new name of the well
known
intro 189a which would protect a large section of NYC pet owners
(Renters)
from unscrupulous landlords and real estate interests.

And......... it will finally clarify the rights of these NYC pet
owners.

Intro. No. 13 states that once a landlord waives a renter's no-pet
clause,
the renter can replace a deceased or relocated pet with another pet
of the
same species. That is, the no-pet clause is waived for the entire
tenancy,
not just for the lifetime of one pet. So, if your no-pet clause was
waived
and you have had a pet for a period of time, and the pet dies or was
relocated, you can automatically adopt a new animal of the same
species,
eliminating the need to choose between your apartment and a pet.

The replacement provision of Intro. No. 13 only applies to NYC
renters,
as opposed to last year's bill, Intro. No. 189A, which applied to
renters
and co-op owners. Because covering co-ops was unfortunately an issue
that
was stopping the bill from passing, advocates agreed to this year's
version
covering renters only. Intro. No. 13 is still a very important first
step in
protecting the rights of people to share their lives with companion
animals
and opening up countless homes for homeless animals. BUT IT IS A
GREAT
START!

We NEED to get the Council Members on the Housing and Buildings
Committee to
hear from their constituents that this bill IS important to us and
that they
want their Council Member to support the bill.

It's a matter of LIFE OR DEATH for thousands of adoptable cats and
dogs
needlessly killed each year simply due to lack of homes.

NOW, EVERYONE ON THIS STRING SHOULD ATTEND THIS VERY IMPORTANT
MEETING
THIS THURSDAY JULY 13 at 6PM

Council Member Tony Avella to Speak at Next LEAGUE OF HUMAN
VOTERS-NYC
Membership Meeting ALL WELCOME!

Council Member Tony Avella, sponsor of the City Council's pets
in
housing bill, Intro. 13, will be speaking at the next LOHV-NYC
membership
meeting on Thursday, July 13th. Come and thank Council Member
Avella for
his commitment to this legislation and find out what you can do to
help pass
this very important legislation.

Other speakers at this action-packed meeting include
Assemblywoman Linda
Rosenthal, John Phillips, LOHV-NYC Executive Director, and LOHV-NYC
Board
Members Meena Alagappan, also Executive Director of HEART, and Carol

Hi Roberta

Our member groups can help you start a group by your
home. It only takes 4-5 dog owners who are willing to
give a little time.

What is the closest park to your home? Maybe I can get

alone at first.

Not sure if being "anal" is approapriate metaphor when
speaking of dog waste! :-)

The absolute best way to get people to clean up after
their dogs is to organize a dog owners group. The
group would print inexpensive rules of behavior in and
out of parks (each NYCdog group has them- just pick
one you like or write your own).

GROUP pressure is very powerful. Instead of
confronting offenders with "pick up that mess" most of
us have found that "would you like a bag? I know I
sometimes forget mine too" works wonders. It does not
cause fights but shames people into cleaning up.

GROUPS can speak with boards of nearby condos and
coops, homeowners associations, Parks personnel, etc.
By becoming a group you send a powerful message that
your members have s stake in the neighborhood and
intend never to allow a few to ruin it for the many.

Where in the Bronz are you?

Breed: Husky
Location: Long Beach, NY
Sex: Male
Age: 3 years
Description: I'm a pretty handsome fella, aren't I? Well, I am as
long as you look past the wound on my neck
- my last owner put a collar on me and then never took it off... But
to me this wound reminds me

of my good luck since it's the reason why I was taken away from that
guy forever. Dr Jeff Strom
of Hilton Animal Hospital fixed me up, and my new friends at Animal
Lovers League at the Glen
Cove are letting me hang here for awhile.

I can't stay forever, even though I really like all the ladies who
work here. I'm still afraid of men -
hopefully I'll get over that with time. I also REALLY like chasing
cats, so my friends here say

that I can't go to a home with any felines. Bummer.

My friends also say they want to make SURE I get a great home this
time, so they want
somebody who is reliable, has references, and who knows how to train
a young dog who hasn't
had many social graces instilled in him. Me? I just want somebody to
love me.

I'm Kerry Lowe, an Outreach Coordinator for Partnerships for Parks, and I joined this list about a month ago, to learn more about what dog owners in the city are experiencing in their parks and dog runs, and what their ideas are.  My work is with community-based volunteer groups who are concerned with park spaces in Brooklyn.  I help groups determine and reach their goals by introducing them to the people, processes and resources of the Parks Department.  Recently, I've been working with several groups of dog owners.

So far, I haven't seen much activity on this group.

Anything going on where you are?
