About the only time one of my dogs exercises himself is after he goes poo... Out
of the hunch he all the sudden he goes sprinting and running around the yard and
zooms into the house and jumps on the recliner or couch and rubs his face along
the side and then lays there with such relief LOL.

It cracks me up every time!!

Melissa

This is definitely true for my dogs! They play off each other or me when I take
them for walks or play games like fetch and hide and seek.

I just got my Bundi (entire male ACD, 4.5 years) out of quarantine on Saturday and he has lost his bark! I will be calling the facility to make enquiries, but should I be concerned? He is not a bad barker, although they did say the first day he barked at them when they walked past his kennel (he was on the very end) so I don't think that happened too much.

Is this likely to be caused by strain of barking or perhaps from overuse of the slip lead they use in the facility. They did tell me he did NOT like the lead used on him, but that as he was so well obedience trained and knows s many commands, it was not necessary to use a lead on him. The dogs also have their collars removed for the duration, too. We only put his collar back on after he was released to us.

He also used to bark to ask for things and that behavior is gone as well. Does it perhaps hurt him to bark?? My husband is very concerned and I am wondering if I should be.

Hi all, My best friend asked me to write to you, asking if there are any suggestions for carsickness for a 4 month old SCWT, even when going on short 10-15 minute trips.  Any suggestions in homeopathy or EOs/ or perhaps ginger.?
Thanks so much for any help you might suggest.

Ellen,

One of my dogs gets car sick all the time. What has been working for me is for
me to sit in the backseat. She lays on my lap hooked to my harness for safety
and I cover her completely with a lightweight towel, her eyes included so she
cannot see out. I also make sure she is on an empty stomach. This seems to make
her feel secure and works very well unless we drive on super curvy roads. She
still has some problems on those. Unfortunately this means someone else has to
drive. I would love to her suggestions from others on this too.

I didn't mean so that he would exercise himself. I meant it as a solution to not being allowed a fence and having to have the dog tied up. The "clothesline" run lets a dog run "free-er" without getting tangled up in a leash or rope - which also applies to any children (or adults) who may be out running and playing with Fido as well. And yes, you are right, dogs need the interaction to play and run - they don't do it on their own.

When I go out in the yard with my little gang of 3 monsterolla Malteses they don't move if I don't. So I walk around the perimiter of the yard and they follow and then if they don't, they sprint to catch up so they all get good exercise. Left alone, they just putz around and sniff, etc.

While this sounds like a great idea, dogs rarely will run and exercise them selves by them selves.   They usually run and play as interaction and socialization with you or other pack members.

I often ask how much exercise clients dogs are getting daily and they tell me -"well he has a huge back yard or pasture to run in all day but I am gone to work all do so not sure how much they actually run around".   Even two dogs left alone together will only interact and "run around" for only a little while without having encouragement to do so

You could try using the free run wire leashes that are attached to clothes lines (0r such like lines) - One pole at one end and another pole at the other and a free running loop that goes along it and is attached to the dog. Dog gets alot of free running that way.

Unfortunately, I am in a community that requires dogs who are outside to be leashed and also does not allow fences. I may be able to skirt the issue if I can come up with a temporary/removable structure for the yard...but really, our house is 1800 sq feet with lots of open space in the main arterys, so I don't see a problem with a small dog getting up enough speed to burn some energy- our kids do! I'm confident that this paired with leashed walking/running for a Bichon, it would be fine. I don't know a whole lot about other breeds though so I'm all ears when it comes to different breeds. Probably a companion/non sporting breed would work best for us.

I've learned that Chief chewed on a log of buffing compound carpenters use to
clean fiberglass. Its a large square brick that looked just like chalk so I
wasn't initially concerned until learning it contains aluminum and other alloys.

I don't honestly know how much he ingested vs just chewed it up.

I'll run bloodwork this week to screen for toxicity, but what else can I do?
I'm hoping he didn't get enough to be toxic. He's not acting sick.

I am well aware of the fact that there is no such thing as good kibble.I feed
totally raw and have for the past 7 years. unfortunitly it is hard to convince a
brain washed public. we do the best that we can. when we do get converts and
great success stories we love it.and use these stories to further educate. If we
can get people to change from grocery store kibble. to a grain free higher
protien kibble. that is one step closer. and a small success.
every thing is one step at a time. Love this group get lots of useful info that
can be passed on. Thanks

there is no such thing as high quality kibble of any kind.  :-(
http://www.thewholedog.org/artkibble.html   We need to educate dog and cat
owners to this fact, there is far too much lying going on out there about kibble
and that there is any difference between the garbage you buy at the grocery
store and what if called "high quality" or  even "holistic".  - no such thing
when it comes to processed pet foods.   :-)

Ellen, when my dog is nauseated I give her a digestive enzyme and it takes it away.  You can also give her bach remedies to calm her.  Do you live in the San Antonio area?  There is a holistic veterinarian who can also prescribe herbs for calming and nausea.  Terry

Thanks so much for any help you might suggest.

I tend to prefer to use it along the spine Kathy. I put a few drops in my hand, activate it and then apply like I am petting the dog. Some people prefer paw pads - I'm not one of them. Some people will put on the inside tips of the ears - since I have floppy eared dogs I know that the eos on the tips can irritate the eyes so I also don't choose that method. Upright ears would be no problem Plus when I put the eos along the spine it can double as a pest repellent.

Thanks! I have Dr. Melissa Shelton's E book on using the YL oils, and she was always saying to use on pads, but the putting it on my hands and patting it on the spine sounds better. She was the only other person that I knew of using the oils, so I am thrilled that you use them also. I have been adding a drop of tangerine in their water bottles ( they drink out of rabbit waterers), and they seem to like that.

My dogs have long floppy ears and ear tips would not work as well.

I have been making my own flea and tick spray using the YL oils with vegetable glycerine and water added to a spray bottle. The only complaint I have is that the oils really make my little dogs coats look greasy. They have silky drop coats with no undercoat, so it looks dirty fast. I had bought Dr. Karen Becker's flea and tick spray, but figured that the YL were better and therapeutic, while I assume that other eo's are not as good and may be dangerous.

When my bitch whelps again I think I will try diffusing Gentle Baby. Have you used the oils during or after whelping?

I am learning about the oils as much as I can.

Hi Dr. Kim. Yes, Krystal from highlandglenn ES’s used Valor and it settled Greer right in. I later looked it up for her and read some reports to her about it being used similarly.
While waiting for Titan to whelp I diffused thieves and peace and calming and added a drop of Valor (since hearing about Krystal using it for Greer). I know it helped me!!Smile I was getting pretty tired because Titan was very restless for a couple days prior to whelping. I know I also added grapefruit to it because it has a clean and happy feel to it, the diffusing was multi purpose, for me and the mom and pups. I remember somewhere in that time using lavender, maybe that was after? Can’t remember as I didn’t take notes......which I am sure Krystal will laugh at me for because she writes everything down. I go with what I think will work for the moment.....oh, forgot, I used Clary Sage in the early stages too.....that is what I forgot to mention. I looked up essential oils to use during labor and after.
I love these Yling EO’s!!
Laurie
P.S. My bitch had 14 pups in her. She hadn’t eaten much for 2 weeks when she had morning sickness (I hadn’t experienced that with a bitch before), so I was worried she had eaten enough. She did look underweight and I was letting her eat whatever and however much she wanted....but the rabbit barn was sorely depleted. The pups were all skinnier than I had seen before, but within hours of being born they had put on such tremendous weight, it was astounding. They are gaining slower (a little) now, but even the first HALF day they were chubby.
Thanks, Laurie

That is so interesting about the Valor. I will ask Jeannie what she uses, it's so nice to know others using the YL oils.

Thanks for the offer of the video on Gentle Baby, please send it to me off list.

Thanks!

How do you apply the Peace and Calming? On paw pads?

Hi all, My best friend asked me to write to you, asking if there are any suggestions for carsickness for a 4 month old SCWT, even when going on short 10-15 minute trips.  Any suggestions in homeopathy or EOs/ or perhaps ginger.?
Thanks so much for any help you might suggest.

Hi Dr.

That's great to hear you are learning so much about the EOs Kathy! That's interesting that they are making your dogs coats greasy though as they shouldn't unless you are using the ones with carrier oils mixed in (the blends sometimes have carrier oils).

I don't breed so I haven't had the opportunity to use them in whelping but Dr. Jeannie does and has used them yes. I know that another member who just had an English Shepherd litter like Laurie did, Krystal, was or still is diffusing the Thieves blend. But for whelping the litter she used Valor on her bitch. Her testimonial on that is pretty cool!

I know of one woman who uses Gentle Baby on her baby each evening - she has a video of it on YouTube. I have it bookmarked if you'd like me to send it to you offlist.
