Hi Jerry,
It really depends on WHICH pink you male is. When you say cream
female, I assume you mean pale fallow, right? Are her toe nails a
clear pink or do they have some gray in them? Same question for the
male. Is there any gray in his nails?
Pink can mean cinnamon opaline, dun fallow opaline, or pale fallow
opaline. Sometimes they are hard to tell apart by appearance. You
have to look closely and know what to look for.
Anyway, we know the male is opaline. Any of his opaline offspring
will be females and his non-opaline offspring will be males.
If the male is opaline pale fallow, then all of his daughters will be
pink and his sons will be cream (pale fallow).
If the male is opaline dun fallow (and not split to pale fallow),
then all of his daughters will be rosy split to dun fallow and cream
(pale fallow). His sons will be normals split to opaline, dun fallow
and pale fallow. I bring up this possibility because I paired a
"cream" male with a pink female thinking I would get creams and
pinks. I got all rosies and normals. The male and female carried
different fallow genes. Their babies are split to both fallows.
If the male is opaline cinnamon, both of which are sex-linked, all of
his daughers will be opaline cinnamons split to pale fallow, and his
sons will be normals split to opaline, cinnamon, and pale fallow.
Both opaline and cinnamon are sex-linked. Both pale fallow and dun
fallow are autosomal recessives.
Pale fallows will have pink toenails. Dun fallow and cinnamon will
show some gray in the toe nails. Cinnamon will show no gray in the
plumage, only browns for the areas with melanin. Both fallows will
have quite pink eyes. Cinnamons will have dark plum-red eyes, almost
black. Of course, you have to have good light to be sure.
I hope this is some help. I don't really want to confuse you, but
unless you are certain which actual mutations you are dealing with,
there are many possibilities. You can post some photos of your birds
and we can see which mutations we think they actually express.

We have had several new members join lately, so maybe we can get this group
going again. Let me introduce myself. My name is Carie Nixon and am moderator
of the group. I live in central Illinois. My website is
http://www.freewebs.com/snowbirdaviary.
I breed scarlet chested parakeets, red rumped parakeets, and my favorite,
Bourke's parakeets. I also have a new pair of western rosellas that I hope to
breed in the spring. I also breed parrotlets and finches, but the grass
parakeets are my main focus.
I have most of the Bourke's mutations, as well as normals. I have rosies
(opaline), pale fallow, dun fallow, lutino, pink (both pale fallow opaline and
dun fallow opaline), and rubino.
I have four pair of scarlet chested parakeets, all normal. Normals are my
favorites but would like to have some blues some day. I have only seen one, and
it was gorgeous.
I have redrumps in normal, pallid, and Australian blue. I am planning on
crossing the pallid and the Australian blues. I love the pale blue birds from
this combination. Nobody around here seems interested in breeding them so I am
starting from scratch.
I am a biologist and did my graduate work in ornithology. I also love genetics,
and have taught it in both high school and college. If anyone needs genetics
advice, I might be able to help.
I would love to hear from others. Are you breeders? Just enjoy them as pets?
What do you keep?
Carie
It's illegal to ship them express mail! And, I don't think you'll find a
GOOD breeder who will do so. Too much left to chance.

I live in Illinois and need a male scarlet chested for a very nice adult hen.
Is there anyone who has one nearby that I can pick up, or who can ship? If you
ship, I prefer to have more than one shipped.

They also carry the new book on Neophema and Neopsephotus
mutations at a pretty good price. That's where I got mine.

Hey everyone,
I hope you don't mind me sharing this, but I just heard The Perch
Store is having a toy sale this week for 30% off all their toys. They
have one of the largest selections I've ever seen! I've used them a
few times before and their orders always come fast and the quality is
fantastic. They also sell just about anything else you'll ever need
for parrots & pet birds.

whatever the species ; there is no such thing as a "Cobalt Green" Bird ! That is a contradiction ! Any Bird of any species is either Blue OR it is Green ; it can't be both at once unless it is of some Parblue mutation (i.e. Aqua, Seagreen &/or Turquoise) but then again not every species evolved genuine Parblue mutations.
Cobalt is the name given to a specific genotype & phenotype ; singleDark_Blue aka SF Dark_Blue aka D_Blue. This precise mutation implies a singleDark-Factor ALONG WITH complete psittacin (yellow, orange, pink &/or red pigment) suppression.
Back to Bourke's Parakeets... The Dark-Factor has NOT yet occured in the species NOR has the genuine Blue mutation. However, the Violet-Factor did occur & was classified in the past few years. Consequently, Violet-Factored Bourke's Parakeets are still extremelly rare !
It is important to keep note & clearly understand that although they appear similar (most particularly in blue series) ; Dark & Violet are 2 completely DISTINCT genes & mutations.
This Bourke's Parakeet does appear to be a Normal specimen WITH a singleViolet-Factor which could also be called SF Violet Normal.

The Orange is a single gene mutation, from my experience and genetic
knowledge.
I have bredt Orange, Opaline Orange and Lime Opaline Orange chicks
from a visually normal pair. That would imply that the cock split
for both Lime, Opaline and Orange and the hen split for Orange. All
the Opaline Orange and Lime Opaline Orange chicks are hens, but the
Normal Orange I have bredt in cocks and hens.
If it was a modification or intensification of pigmentation as in
the redfronted Turquoisine you would not be able to breed visually
Orange birds as the dad and the mom do not show any Orange.
In the Orange birds it is the Yellow that is replaced by Orange. The
red and the Green stay unaffected.

You have some that I have only seen in books or on the internet. I
am really interested in the orange red rumps. I have a pallid red
rump who has orange on his belly. He had more when he was a
nestling, but still has some as an adult. I have assumed it is a
suffused character. Do your oranges act like a character that you
selectively breed to enhance (probably multiple genes involved) or is
it all or nothing, like a single gene. I have also had a few females
born with small amounts of red on their rumps. Your birds are
beautiful. If this is a gene you are dealing with, do you know if it
occurs anywhere else other than South Africa?

Hi Paul, Welcome to the group. There has not been much activity here

Bourke's, Turquoisines, red rumps, and linneolated in your photos.

Yes, the blue rumpies are quite lovely. It's nice to see that the price has come down to reasonable levels as well. Back when I was first looking at them they were like $ 1500 for a pair. None of mine are loud at all. Not as quiet as the Bourkes, but they have a pretty song for the most part. Never heard anything like a smoke alarm. :-) I know the kind of cage you're talking about - might be okay to transport a finch but that's about it. But I have seen some breeders set up at shows with Bourkes and red rumpeds in them - just makes me cringe that the poor things are sitting in them all day! At any rate, hope your boy calms down soon.
Subject: Re: [Neophema_GrassParakeets] Need some advice on blue red rump parakeets
Hi, I was shocked to see what the breeders (wife) had brought the bird in. I saw a cardboard box with a towel over it. When she removed the towel the bird was in a white flat cage ( not even close to a regular cage) and it was smushed. I had brought my own carrier for the bird. The entrance was so small I could not fit my hand in it. I don't even know how the seller fit this big bird into that container. After struggling a few times I was able to get the bird out of it and put him in my carrier. I thought I was going to have to cut the bird out with wire cutters. The cage looked like it was for a finch or canary. It was terrible. He is singing quite loud now and making sounds like a smoke detector. I thought they were quiet like bourkes. It seems like he is looking for a hen to respond to his sounds. I fell in love with him whether he was parent or handfed. It didn't matter to me at the time becuase the breeder said he didn't bite. I now wish he was handfed but I can't look back. I want to move on and have a beautiful baby boy blue red rump. I wish people wouldn't lie about the bird just to make a sale. I hope he will calm down. Angela
He very well may have been fairly tame and sweet before he went
through such a traumatic situation. I think that would have
absolutely terrified any bird, especially one as intelligent as a red
rump. It may take him a bit to recover from it.

Hi Angela,
Sounds a little extreme, but the main reason I hand feed most of my
grass
keets is because of the thrashing around factor. I had a couple of
hens that
I sold last year who had been parent raised. Silly me - I reached in
for
one of them and got the snot bitten out of my hand - had to use a
towel -
they do pack a mean bite for such a comparatively small bird! :-) But,
they
were fairly calm for parent raised birds. How did he act when you
picked
him up from the breeder? Poor thing. I guess all you can do is to
move
slowly, talk softly - and hopefully he'll come around. :-)

I have never had one react that badly, but I imagine he is terrified.
It might help if you cover all but the front of his cage so he feels
more secure (if you can do this without causing him to thrash himself
to pieces). Hopefully he will settle down after a few days. It's
hard to feed and clean the cage of a bird who reacts that strongly.
I also would love to have some blue red rumps. I have normal and
pallid. I would love to try to breed a pallid blue.

Hi Joey,
Happy Easter to you too! Nothing new here - all the babies I had are now
weaned - been keeping them on my dining room table so they'll at least get a
little interaction. Two of the rr girls, in particular, love to attack my
fingers when I'm changing the food and water - so I grab them out and give
them a skritch, which they accept pretty willingly. One thing I have
noticed is that the lutinos are generally friendlier, and stay friendlier,
than the normals. Well, off to go buy Easter dinner - have a great weekend
all! :-)

Anyone have any new babies? I'm up to two new baby red-rumpies. Their
first time laying and both fertile eggs hatched and are being fed very well.
Have a great and safe Easter Holiday : )

Welcome to the group. I hope you enjoy being with us. I know a little about you and your birds but the rest of the group probably doesn't know much, so would you introduce yourself and tell everyone what you raise.
I have a pair of normal Bourke's on eggs. Last time I looked, there
were 5 of them in there. This is a first time for this pair, but
both were paired with other mates last year. I separated to give the
other hen a rest, and to try the hen with a different male as all her
eggs last year were infertile. I need to get more nest boxes up.
Just too busy with work and my rabbits, horses, dogs... you get the
