He Gus's parent (what's your name),
I'm running out but welcome to the
group. We'll help you and Gus. I'm sending you, in a private e-mail, a paper
by Dr. Allen Sisson, which you will read about in your welcome message. They both describe a lot more that
should be done to put Gus into remission.
Speak to you after you've read all
this. It's a lot to learn but doing
it will help save Gus's life.
Alex

My 5 year old male
wire dachshund went in for disk surgery and after MRI and spinal tap was found
to have probable GME. He's on prednisone now. Any advice or support would be
greatly appreciated.
It was an emotional roller coaster of a day. They anesthetized him to do the
MRI. They did not see any disk issues but did see a "mass" in the
cervical spine extending from C1 through C2. There was also extensive
inflammation in the same area. They decided to do a spinal tap while he was
out. Long story short...the spinal fluid results showed more inflammation than would
be expected for a tumor so the doctor feels it is probably granulomatous
meningoencephalitis (GME). He'll be treated with steroids and if he shows a
good response a continued slow taper over the next 5-6 months. Re-eval at that
time. He's on 5 mg of prednisone 2 tabs 2 x day for 7 days, 1 tab a day for
three weeks then 1 tab every other day. He told me what to watch for with the
steroids, but didn't advise pepcid. Gus is happy to be home....no crate rest!
