Subject: [NewGMEDogs] Hi Group!

It kind of stinks that we had to start a new group, but I am so glad
to have the format we had back. We need "real time" advice and
support.

Laura, I have been thinking of you and just wanted you to know that.
I wish there were a way I could give you a big hug...

Lastnight I got a call from Dr. Sisson. He was telling me that it
was OK to give Frida the cytarabine injections based on the CBC he
had just received. The problem was, I had already given her the
shots last week (when she was supposed to get them). It turns out I
actually spaced out and gave Frida her shots without Dr. Sisson
telling me the bloodwork was good (my local vet never sent him the
results until yesterday). I couldn't believe I would do that... but
I did. Usually my vet never faxes the CBC on time and I have to bug
the heck out of them to do it. This time, I just flaked out and gave
her the shots without any regard to the lab results! I still can't
believe I did that. Anyway, not a big deal because her bloodwork was
fine... but that's kind of scary.

I got some good news from Dr. Sisson too... next month is Frida's
last month of the cytarabine injections! I can not wait to be done
with that one. I am not enjoying those shots. So... Frida is one
step closer to being med free. She is done with the pred, done with
the Lomustine and almost done with the cytarabine... then she will
be on cyclosporin for a few more months and we're done. She is doing
awesome... and I don't want to brag or bore you all, but thought I'd
share, so as to give some hope to everyone fighting the good fight.

Well, looking forward to our continued efforts in sharing advice and
experiences with this terrible disease at our new address.

Take care,
Jill

HI everyone -

Your posts (especially Alex, Virginia, Jill, Kathy Hutchins, Cathy,
Mike, Bill and Edward) after Ozzy left really provided me with the
comfort to get through this terrible, lonely time. The best part
was is feeling how well you all understood and shared the same love
for your little ones...

Sorry that all that chaos happened with the last group...its too bad
that the archives wont be there but they wont take long to build up
in this one. I felt terrible that Alex you recieved the brunt of
it - you helped me/Ozzy incredibly with your knowledge you gained
from your extensive experiences with Hugo. You were always the
first one to take time/care out of your day to help others - you
definitely are needed to help more and I was scared it would affect
your participation. I relied on you so much - you really dont
understand the impact you have. It felt so good to see your name
again. Thanks to everyone to getting this started - Jill, Donnette,
Alex, etc.

I dont think it is has fully set in it - part of me still feels like
Ozzy will be back...but each day it becomes more real. So in a way,
every day seems to be getting worse as I face reality but I hope it
will level off soon. I guess I always live in denial - even after
Ozzy's diagnosis was confirmed by spinal tap, I always questioned
that maybe it was just an inner ear infection or something simple
and they read the tap wrong or it got mixed up with someone else;s -
hed just end up being fine. Maybe its my way of keeping some
sanity. Hes on my thoughts constantly. And I wouldnt want it any
other way.

I have been busy getting everything ready for Ozzys closure...I
originally thought cremation but have changed my mind to burial. He
loved to run around my parents place (he stayed there while I worked
so was there a lot) and they live on a farm with tonnes of
fields...the grass would get so long and all you would see was this
little tiny white speck jumping through like a bunny (which my dad
eventually ended up cutting the grass just for Ozzy's sake and
probably took an extra couple of hours of week - Dad didnt like to
admit how much he adored Ozzy so I never acted like I noticed). I
would yell "Ozzy" and he would ignore me, pretended like he didnt
hear me unless I said you want a treat...then he heard but even then
sometimes he may decide he would rather gallavanting in the fields
over a treat and I would have to go chase him. Every day I would
call on my lunchbreak asking how Ozzy was doing to my Dad and at
least twice a week - he would say "Ahhh Laura...I probably shouldnt
tell you this, but Ozzy was almost a goner today, for real this
time". Ozzy loved the outdoors and there were potatoe fields next
to the farm that he would get in the low part of the rows and you
wouldnt see him bc he was so small. You would never know where he
would be. I think the only days Dad didnt almost lost him was on
the rainy days where they stayed inside. I told Dad to tie him up
if he cant watch him but he said Ozzy loved exploring too much that
he couldnt bear it. Ahhh, I could tell stories forever...stories I
always want to remember. Oh, Im crying again. Sorry for going off
on a rant...OK, back on track...

So we decided on a burial out back of my parents house (they are
going to live there for a long time and then my sister wants the
house so I was promised it would always be in the family) where he
always roamed for hours every day. We got a nice small casket that
is made of some material (fiber glass maybe?) that will never
deteriorate (for myself, I hate the thought of bugs getting in or
being cold) - and it is lined with the pillows and silk. I am going
to put his baby blankie, pictures of all his family with him, a few
of his favorite kibbles, my cross necklace around his neck, wrapped
in his favorite bathrobes, his little cat teddy he would drag around
and some daises (his favorite flower he would stop to smell). I got
a flat tombstone that says Ozzy "my boo" since that is what I always
called him. And I am getting videos edited of him from when he was
a baby to put together to show after the burial. He has so many
people that love him...he is just one of those dogs that everyone
knew...I remember even at Halloween there would be kids I had never
seen before come to the door and be like "Ozzy!" Im be like how do
they know my son. He was so popular.

I will never take down his pictures and if I move, they will just go
back up.

More news...Ozzys mom is awfully lonely (she was used for breeding
so is used to be with dogs more then humans it seems - she was
soexcited when she saw Ozzy last Sunday) and shes very timid - so
we may be getting a little puppy. Ozzys half brother - I feel like
I am doing Ozzy some justice in getting his family members and will
carry Ozzys legacy on. I hope so anyway. I know they wont come to
close to being anything like Ozzy and I dont think I will ever share
that close of a bond again. By no means, am I trying to replace
Ozzy by getting another puppy bc Ozzy was Ozzy not just a dog/pet to
me. I just know that I want to get another dog eventually to be
company with Ozzys mom so I might as well do it now. Does this make
sense to anyone else?

Virginia - your story about yourself as a kid, I always refer to it
when I think of Ozzy and what he is doing now...I dont have much
experience with losing people and death around me, so I havent
really had much time or need to think about what happens and life
afterwards. Your story just made me feel at peace with it all.

I wish I could meet all of you and your little ones since you all
seem so amazing...I will remain part of the group and if I ever feel
I can offer some advice to someone then you will see me pop up and
respond. I will definitely be looking forward to updates though
from you guys...so need to stay a part of it.

Alex - Piglet sounds precious, I love his name. He is maltese too
right?

I will post Ozzys pictures on this group now too...I am so proud of
him. I wish I could say his looks came from me:)

You all always have a special place in my heart and I will always be
interested to hear of progresses in treating this disease.

Laura, proud to be Ozzy's mom

Hello,

My name is Ikue, and my Maltese girl, CoCo, has recently been diagnosed with possible DME/NME.

Cathy, thank you so much for letting me know about this list.

Alex, thank you so much for Dr. Sisson's contact information, which I forwarded to my vet.

CoCo, who will turn 4 years old next month, had seizures on March 17 and was diagnosed with possible DME/NME on March 26, as a result of MRI and spinal tap (that were conducted on March 22).

CoCo has been on prednisolone (2 mg/kg once a day), phenobarbital (2 mg/kg twice daily) and zonisamide (3.3 mg/kg twice daily).
I have joined this list because I want to know what is best for CoCo, not to mention learning as much as possible what is going on in her body.

I would appreciate your advice and support.

Sincerely,

Ikue

that. I will hope that your pup has something that can be helped. I
am frightened by all of the maltese that are getting sick......

Hello and welcome Ikue,

We're happy you found the group too and are sorry you needed to do so.  But, as you'll learn over the next few days and weeks, participating in it, there's real hope now for dogs afflicted with GME.  As I do with all new members, I'm privately e-mailing you a copy of Dr. Sisson's most recent paper, which you should print out and give to your vet as well.

The theme you'll also find here is that many vets, even armed with Dr. SIsson's paper, still aren't sure how to deal with the subleties of treating GME or of the setbacks that frequently occur during the initial phases of treatment.  So, we'll all be enouraging you to take charge of Coco's treatment and to look diplomatically and fairly but persistently over your local vet's shoulder, no matter how well meaning he or she is.  The fact is that this is a treament for experts in GME, not neurologists in general or general vets, although caring ones are happy to work with Dr. Sisson, who selflessly and compassionately provides intensely individual advice by phone, e-mail and fax so Coco can essentially be treated by him, even though she's 12,000 miles away.

My Maltese, Hugo, obtained the value of Dr. Sisson's treatment only after a year of ineffective mistreatmet by renowned veterinary neurologists in the New York City area and he's had incredible improvement (but also several setbacks) that he never experienced with his former neurologists.  Here's to hoping Coco has an even better experience, since she will be lucky enough to have him treating her from the inception--a very important factor in determining how well she'll respond to treatment.  I suggest you don't lose any more time and get Dr. Sisson in charge as soon as possible.

Again, welcome to the group and let's get your little Coco healthy once again.

Alex

Laura,

I've also been thinking about you and how it must be painful to see the birth of a new group and the optimism we all have that we aren't at risk of being shut down anymore.  When I look at our little Piglet, only 10 months old, I always think of Ozzy and your bond.  My wife is so attached to him (I love him too), I wonder if she's having the same experience you had.  Anyway, you're in my thoughts.

Jill,

Again, think of where you were a year ago.  What more can I say except the official GMEDogs (er, NewGMEDogs) chant:  Go Frida, Go Frida, Go Frida!!!!!

On the topic of messing up medications, I've done it so I have created charts I force myself to mark off to avoid these things.  Once you're in the swing of meds like cytarabine and you don't change much along the way, as long as you weren't at the edge of some level the blood tests tend to be relatively constant over time, so I'm sure you didn't put Frida at risk.  But, don't do it again.....!!!  And don't anyone else think it's OK to skip the blood tests.  Frida is stable, at the end of a medication run.  At the beginning, the white counts have to be watched like a hawk or you can precipitate some really dangerous crises.

Alex

Hi Everyone,

I have been out sick for a couple of days and was I ever shocked when I
looked at my emails. Crazy. But I am here to help anyway I can. I think
Mary over reacted. Dr. Sisson is a wonderful Dr. and it is usually by
recommendations that you see a Dr. If a Dr. has treated many people and
is good that's the one I want especially if it is such a rare and
specialized disease. Hope this works out for everyone.

As I said the other day on the other forum, I don't post very often.

I lost my beautiful dog, Tramp, to GME in 2001 and I want to do what I
can to make dog owners aware here in the UK of this awful disease. When
Tramp was ill, I didn't even get a proper diagnosis let alone any
treatment beyond prednisone. It was quite amazing and heartbreaking
hearing little Ozzy's story unfold, because that is exactly what
happened to Tramp (same symptoms, same everything except the seizures).

Anyway, without going on too long, don't lose this forum. Awareness of
GME is not as great over here in the UK and we probably don't have a Dr
Sisson equivalent, so the forum may be the only lifeline some dogs and
their owners have.

Keep up the good work

Hello everyone and welcome to the NewGMEDogs group!  I hope we'll just pick up where we were on the old group but there does seem to be a technical problem with multiple messages now.  We'll have to look into why this is happening and stop it, lest everyone get fed up with their inboxes getting filled up.  Hopefully, it will be cleared up in short order.

I answered Kathy privately earlier today but now that the group is up and running, here's what I told her.

Dr. Sisson has always said not to get worked up over higher neutrophil counts; it just means you are a day or so late testing or that more medication might be used.  You know low neutrophils is a side effect, not the intended effect, of the lomustine.  Hugo was over 10,000 for the longest time until we got him lower, and then he dropped too low at the cytarabine nadir, so doing this carefully is the right thing.  It seems logical that the skin thing might affect a white count but I don't know if it would affect neutrophils versus some other types of WBC's.

Again, welcome to everyone and thank you for continuing to participate in this very valuable group.

Alex

Donette sent this out with a subject line that didn't really identify it, so I'm re-sending it so everyone can see this is a generic Yahoo problem today and has nothing to do with the fact that we set this group up today or how it was set up.  It's a system wide problem and should be cleared up in short order (or so Yahoo says).

This is from the Yahoo people:

Duplicate Messages and Email Delivery
We're aware of the duplicate message bug that has been affecting groups today and are working to resolve the issue (a side effect of this bug is that some messages are also being delayed). We have actually pushed two fixes already, but we are aware that some groups are still experiencing the problem and that more needs to be done to fully resolve the issue.

There is, however, one silver lining to this bug. It was the result of our latest system updates intended to improve email delivery speeds. So once the bugs are resolved, we should see a significant reduction in the time it takes to deliver messages to Yahoo! Groups members.

We will update this blog entry as soon as we have more definitive information on the status of this issue.

Thank you and our apologies for any inconvenience caused by the duplicate messages.

The Yahoo! Groups Team

P.S. It would be helpful to get reports of duplicate issues if your groups are still experiencing the problem with messages posted (not received) after 8:00 pm PST. If so, please add a comment to the bug letting us know the name of your group and the message numbers of the duplicate messages. Thanks!

Yes, I'm here as well. And I hope Alex and some of the others show
up soon because I have a question re: lomustine.

Kisa received a dose of lomustine last Tuesday. I think this is
her 6th or 7th. She had her CBC done today, Wednesday, and for the
first time in several months her neutrophils didn't go low enough.
They were 8,000 today. There are two possible things going on:

(1) Delaying the testing by a day -- can it really make that much
of a difference? I know Dr. Sisson says the nadir comes on day 6,
and we missed that by two days. We've always tested on day 7,
because I was trying to always go over there the same day of the
week. That got messed up because of the delayed cytarabine
bounce-back two weeks ago and we got off schedule. I was trying to
get back to Wednesdays, and so we didn't test until day 8.

(2) Have any of you ever had some unrelated
infectious/inflammatory process interfere with getting a good WBC
reading? Kisa has had this persistent seroma on her shoulder -- we
keep draining and flushing and when we let it heal over it just
fills with fluid again. It's not pus, and it doesn't culture
positive for bacteria, so she's not on antibiotics for it. But
it's obviously some inflammation, and that does stimulate WBC
production, even without infection, or so I'm told.

Either way we can probably just wait until next month and see if
it happens again. The seroma does look like it's finally getting
smaller, so perhaps that will not be complicating the picture by
then.

I agree!  I really appreciate the input and advice as my vet isn't 100% on board and takes his sweet time.  All I can say is if nothing else this group gives us hope!  Sometimes thats a huge help.  I know there may be other vets out there that can treat GME but we don't have time to:  1) try to find them and 2) try to fill them in on whats going on and possibly change everything.  So if you found someone and something that works then "if it ain't broke don't fix it" .
Thank you to everyone.
