We had rain on Saturday driving up but it stopped just about when we
found the River Walk in Fortuna. It was a gravel walk and no mud. Caleb
also got to meet and play with his half sister that day.
Sunday was beautiful. No rain. We didn't experiance too much rain on any
of our walks. Caleb will do a little review of our trip when we get our
pictures back.
We stayed at the same place we have stayed at before. It is a Bed &
Breakfast called "A Weavers Inn". Stash Tea offers a list of B&B's and a
coupon good for one free night when you pay for a night. So we get a
great room for 2 nights plus 2 wonderful breakfasts for around $100.00.

Thanks Dale for sharing with us about your trip to Eureka. Did you have much
rain? How does Caleb do in the rain? Any tips on where to stay? We'll be
looking for Caleb's review :) Angus & Hylander got to take a short hike
through the Pogonip when there was a break in the rain in Saturday. We caught
the trail over off Spring Street, sort of near UCSC. It was a little muddy in
spots, but lots of songbirds. Yesterday my son and I walked with the dogs on
one of the DeLaveaga Park trails. We caught the trail Sandi told us about,
and we walked up to the top, near the golf course and turned around. We
walked for about an hour. We saw so many pretty ferns. Thanks Sandi!

Just returned from Eureka where we spent the weekend. Found a few great
hikes. I'll list them briefly now and send more details when I have the
time to sit down and write something out.
South of Eureka in Fortuna is a River Walk. Follws the Eel River. We
walked aways. Don't know it's length.
In Eureka is Sequoia Park. Some short hiking trails.
Between Arcada and McKinleyville is the Hammond Trail. Probably is the
trackbed of the old railroad. First section is over 2 miles and a second
section has just been completed.
Our favorite though was Arcada Community Park. Great hikes through
redwoods on 17 differen trails. Beautiful and not many people.
Thats it for now.
And Caleb passed his therapy dog evaluation.

Good luck and keep us posted. I am sure he'll pass with flying colors. You
can have a special celebration for him at Sheep Dung. Did you see that Sunny
has link to Caleb's page on her page under her favorites? BTW... there are a
couple of nice grouops on AAA/AAT up at yahoogrouops. DogTales and
therapydogsusa are both very helpful and friendly. There is also a Sunday
night CHAT.

Hi Dale,
Does this mean that caleb gets to go to work with you? BTW, when is
Caleb's therapy dog evaluation?
Pam
Yes, there are some great hikes along the Mendocino Coast. The Point
Cabrillo Lighthouse property is now open to the public for walking.
There are some nice walks to be had there with wonderful views
www.mcn.org/1/pointcabrillo/
Dogs are allowed on leash. We enjoy it there.
I'll mention other hikes as time goes by.

We've stayed at the Standford Inn by the Sea and the

Have you done the trail by Rachael's Bed & Breakfast?
Not a long trail, but what a view of the Pacific and
Mendocino when you get to (I hope this is the right

Bragg is very nice, too.

I've seen Ripple Creek Cabins advertised TravelDog.com., I think? That is
where I found both Sheep Dung and Zieigler's Trail End. If others on the list

nice info on places to do with the digs, and also some luck in locating

Hi Pam,
I am not familiar with the Trinity area although we had planned a trip
there this year. We wanted to do a trip to the snow and discovered that
my cousin owns some cabins in Trinity Center www.ripplecreekcabins.com
Unfortunately it didn't work out this year but I'd love to here what you
discover on your trip up there.

Hi Dale,
There were foxtails to contend with at Sheep Dung in the summer, but it
wasn't horrible on the trails. The pond was wonderful, and I am hoping to try
and teach my boys to swim, at least a little. It was nice visiting everyone
at the pond and floating around at day's end. It was the only time we heard
anything besides birds while we were there. It was a lot quieter than many
camping spots I have been to. I had actually tried to book for the weekend of
April 6/-8, but they were already booked.
So we am going to try a new place called <A
HREF="http://www.zieglerstrailsend.com/">"Ziegler's Trail End'</A> on the
south fork of the Trinity River that weekend. It is a much longer drive for
us, but I have always wanted to check out the area. It is in the middle of
nowhere, in a small town called Hyampom. There are seven cabins on the
property right by the river. It is east of Eureka. Have you been to the area?
If so you will have to give me some pointers on what to see and do as the
date approaches.
I managed to head up the trail recommended by Sandi up at DeLaveaga
Park. The trailhead was 1/2 mile from my driveway. I went with my stepson
after school and we walked for about an hour with both dogs. We could hear
the traffic because it was during the commute hour, but it was a really nice
spot. I will have to go back on a weekday afternoon when I am not working (my
favorite time to hike)! Thanks Sandi for passing along the information.

We are stayying at Sheep Dung Estates agian in March. Great place! It is
our Spring get away place. I heard the burrs are terrible in the summer.
Did you find them a problem in June? Caleb and burrs are not a good
match! I would love to go there and swim with him though. He love to
swim.
Next weekend we are off to Eureka. Caleb is getting evaluated by "Dog
Therapy International" We hope to do some hiking if the weather is OK.

Hi
Here is a little more information about me:
Name: Pam
Hometown/Family: I live in Santa Cruz, California with my husband and our
children. We are blended family. We each have three children, ages 12-29. We
have four kids still at home (part-time with joint custody). We have three
cats and two shelties named Angus and Hylander. Angus and I do therapy dog
work and Hylander belongs to my 12 year old son. He used to be active in 4-H
obedience, and he sometimes comes along when I visit the nursing home. He
plans to retire from the ring and spend his time fishing with Hylander <g>.
Occupation/Hobbies: I work part-time as a nurse-midwife, in a hospital based
practice. I am also active in AAA/AAT. We visit a local assisted living
facility, and I have just started working privately with a little girl with
pervasive developmental disorder. I like to garden, hike, and write when I
find the time.
Favorite Regional Hiking Spot: There are so many. So much depends on how much
time I have, and which family members will be joining us. When my husband and
I are going with just the two dogs, lately I have been enjoying the Pogonip.
It feels a million miles away-and isn't! I love to visit Sheep Dung, and am
planning another trip there the first weekend in June. I will be exploring
the Trinity Alps in April. have never been there. I lived and worked on the
Navajo Reservation for a year and adore the Southwest. I haven't taken the
dogs there yet, but we plan to take them there this summer when we houseboat
on Lake Powell with the kids. We will also be camping for several days at
Marble Canyon. Has anyone on the list camped with their dogs?
Webpage: If you click on the hyperlink in my signature line it will take you
to my site. If you follow all the links, you will learn about the dogs,
including the therapy work, my midwifery practice, read some of my poetry and
even meet my human family! I plan to update my site in the spring. Please
visit and let me know what you think.

Hi Dale,
Thanks for sharing. I had wondered when I first stumbled upon Caleb's
webpage where you were located. The Mendocino Coast is beautiful. I
think Sunny would like the Mendocino Coast too! Well-behaved dogs are
welcome on-leash at the Botanical Coast Gardens. My husband and I
were there in June. We took a day trip into Mendocino while staying
up at Sheep Dung Estates.

Hi, My name is Dale. My wife and I live on the Mendocino Coast with
Caleb. We take him everywhere and then he likes to write travel reviews
of everywhere we go on his webpage. Speaking of Half Moon Bay. Caleb and
I took a short hike at McNee Ranch near Montara and hope to take a much
longer one.. Any experiances there. My parents live nearby so it is
convieniant for us.
Looking forward to finding out about some great places from you all.

Carmel has an outrageous beach at the end of Ocean Ave.
that allows off leash dog walking all the time.
Doris Day was instrumental in creating a dog friendly climate
in Carmel. I've heard she has a hotel that allows dogs, even on
the couches in the lounge and in the bar.
Sounds like fun.

Hi Sandi,
This trail is very near my home. Do you have any idea how to get a
map of the trails up at DeLeaveaga, or how long this trail is?
Thank,
Pam
Hi Peggy,
Thanks for sharing your introduction. I live in Santa Cruz, and like the
coast bewteen here and Half Moon Bay very much. There is a poem on my website
about that stretch of coastline. I adore Pescadero, a tiny little town
between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. There is a nice ridge trail in Butano
State Park that you can hike on. It is an old fire road so dogs are allowed
on leash. There is a nice little resturant in town called Duarte's Tavern
that has great soup.
When are you next planning to visit? And if i may ask, what do you do as a
logistician?

Many thanks to Pam for starting this list. There are
a lot of gorgeous areas along the CA coast (two we
really like: Half Moon Bay has a beautiful beach to
walk along with our four legged friends and Moonstone
Beach Drive in the Cambria/San Simeon area). Look

Hi
As outdoor recreation enthusiasts with dogs, here is some info you
may want to look into. It was sent to me by someone on the PERF
Sheltie list who doesn't have time to join another list, but thought
this would be important to pass along to us. Permisssion to cross-
post given:
Subj: :State Parks

Hi Pam,
Since my e-mail is only at work I do not post on any lists, but I did
read your
posting on perf shelties about the new northern california activity
group. I
thought you might be interested in and be able to keep your list
informed about
this proposed legislation by Senator Jackie Speier. Once opened,
click on the
right side of page.
http://democrats.sen.ca.gov/senator/speier/
I feel like California dog lovers need to support this legislation
and thank
Jackie for her proposal. With the threatened closure of many areas
once opened
to dogs, i.e. Fort Funston, Chrissy Field, The Stanford Dish, East
Bay Regional
Parklands etc etc we may have no areas open to us in which to
recreate with our
dogs.
Linda & SunDance the herding sheltie.
Santa Cruz has designated the service road into Delaveaga Park as an off
leash trail.
The Branciforte service road is very easy to find.
From Soquel Avenue area follow Branciforte Ave toward Delaveaga Park
(toward the mountains),
Make a left turn on Goss, you'll come quickly down a hill to a stop sign.
Make a right turn and you're on Branciforte Dr.
The service road has a large dirt area to park with a chain going across
the road up.
Its a really beautiful walk.
Thanks to Carla Hall and her goldens for her work in helping to advocate
with the County of Santa Cruz for off leash exercise.

I really have enjoyed checking out both of your websites. Even though
attachments can't be sent with the email exchanges, please feel free
to direct us to your sites, and upolad pictures into the files
section, especially local hiking and travel photos. Perhaps we can
start a nice review of local hiking and travel spots and keep in a
folder accessible for future refernce? I will try to make regular
posts every one to two weeks relevant to our topic(s), usually from
others who do not have the time to join, but wanted me to pass
something along. I will try to indicate what the topic is in the
subject line so you can be selective if you need to be :)
In the meantime I wanted to post this questionaire, adapted from a

Hi Caleb and Dale,
It is us... I just sent out the invites on Sunday night after starting the
group. I am a member of another similar group at yahoo (formerly egroups),
called Traildog, and it is very good, but it's huge and many of the folks are
out of state. I thought it would nice to see if there was some interest in a
more regional group, as I am finding it increasingly difficult to find the
time to sort through my email. I sent info to a couple of email discussion
groups and to people I know who like to get out with their dogs. We'll see
what happens. I don't expect it to be super active, just an occasional
posting on nice hikes, etc. Maybe we can help each other with trail and local
hike info when traveling to a new area on a vacation, etc. We can keep info
in the files for a nice resource. Please let anyone you might think would be
interested know about it, and feel free to share your suggestions. Once there
are a couple of others we can post introductions.
