I don't think we can do anything about that because it is the way YahooGroups is setup.  We can put all that info on our web site so people can find out more about it before subscribing.  In fact, it may not be such a bad idea for the NAF list to for the people that actually join and fly with us.

Mona,

When you are directed to a yahoo groups site, don't
you have to subscribe to get into it?  That puts me
off when I want to know more but have to put in my
name, email address, interests, etc.

HEY!  Our president is going to be famous!  You go girl!  Give us a holler if you think we can help in any way, ok?  We're proud of you Mona, you've been doing a great job of putting this concept out to the masses of parrot owners that don't have a clue of how to give their parrots a better life style.  This is going to help a lot of parrots that don't have much of a life.  Thanks,
Tom

Well, Birdtalk just emailed me and now they want me to write an article on
how to teach recall, targeting to a perch and flighted retrieves.....

I guess I gotta get to work....LOL.....

Thanks Tom for the encouragement.

Okay.....

Liz Wilson was looking for a contact for the Seattle Flyers because Bird
Talk had heard about the group and was interested in it.    A friend
referred Liz to me and Liz put me in touch with Rose, one of Bird Talk's
editors.

Rose and I talked for about an hour last night.    She is going to put our
group into Bird Talk as a news item.  She wants a good picture of Babylon
flying to go with the news item.  (She has a Senegal - and I wish I had
better pictures, darn!)

I told her that we have two fly groups in Seattle but that we are the only
one that has a building.  I emphasized that the name of our group was
Northwest Avian Flyers and that people could contact us by joining the
yahoogroups.

I also showed her Nate's www.flyday.org sight and I told her that our group
was very similar in makeup to Nate's.    I told her that our health policy
is a lot less restrictive.   We will require a vet check by a veterinarian
that specialized in avians and we will also require well bird exams every 18
months thereafter.  I also told her that we would prefer that the avian vet
be board certified but that we do understand that there are excellent avian
vets out there that are not board certified and that some areas do not have
a board certified vet available so we will make exceptions as long as the
vet has a good reputation.

She asked me questions like "How did the group get started?"  "Why do I
fly?" and "What are some of the drawbacks to flying in a group?"

I told her that I first heard about it through the freeflight list and I
told her about Chris Biro.   I told her that the reason I fly is because I
just love having my birds do big loops and come back to me.   I told her
that the drawbacks are that health issues can become contentious and that it
is difficult to find A) A group of people who want to fly their birds and B)
a building.     I also suggested National Guard Armories and she said that
she knew a lot of bird groups were using them for bird fairs, etc. in
Florida and other states.

We talked about a lot of other stuff.....but I can't remember everything I
said....I know I was very enthusiastic about flight and I was encouraging
her to work with her Senegal so he can become flighted.   He is a five year
old rescue.

So....This first little bit is just going to come up as a "news item".   In
April 2004, I sent Bird Talk a Query letter and offered to write some
articles on flight training and working with birds in a fly building.   Bird
Talk never acknowledged the query letter so I emailed it to Rose....so, they
may want me to write some more articles but she has to meet with her group
and they will decide.

So....that's all I know....Thanks guys.

I posted Dr. Bennett's health recommendations into the file along with her
credentials.

At this point, they are just in the files. I'm not going to set them up to
go out to new members or anything yet...(not that we have any new members -
grin)

I want to make a statement to the effect that the best defense against viral
diseases is a good offense. In other words, it is important to develop
the bird's immune system. This can be done through diet and exercise.

Do any of you guys know a good diet website we could link? I'm not on
Feeding Feathers (yahoogroups). I think you are on it Suzanne, How is it?

I am still waiting for Dr. Ritchie's book on avian viruses to come in the
mail and I'm still waiting to see what Dr. Bennett emails regarding all of
this stuff. I think once we get that info., I can borrow passages, etc.
for a welcome message. Just some thoughts........

Thanks.

I read this on another list.

The DEA found a large shipment of marijuana.   They decided to take the
shipment and burn it on the beach immediately.    There happened to be a
flock of terns nearby.   To their horror, the DEA found that the terns were
flying in and out of the smoke as the pot burned.   The DEA did an
investigation and found their worst fears were realized,  they found that no
tern was left unstoned......

I forget jokes after two days so I had to send this out soon....LOL.....

Yuck....Hang in there.....

Hopefully, you will get some good medications and lots of good sleep.

I found a lot of good websites on PBFD yesterday and I read and read and
read. If anybody gets bored, the BEST index on the web to find just about
anything having to do with parrots is:

http://www.oldworldaviaries.com/text/bookmarks/bookmark.html

From everything that I read, the majority of birds that contract the virus
shed it and then gain immunity. The big problem with the disease is in a
nursery environment because the babies absorb the virus into their
bursas....(I'm not sure but I think that's around the choacal area). Some
babies develop immunity and some do not. One article that I read said that
a lot of the danger is past after the bird fledges.

Another article I read said that you can do a lot of tests but that the
tests have no way to know whether the virus is "alive" or "dead".......since
virus aren't alive, I guess they mean "active" or "inactive'. They said
that a lot of these tests pick up the "dead" virus.......

Anyway, I read quite a few articles from people who had nursery environments
infected by the disease. With the exception of the lories - which is a
completely different strain and decimated the Tacoma Zoo exhibit - (very
interesting story) - PBFD would kill the infected birds and although the
other birds in the home would test positive for the disease, most of these
birds eventually shed the virus and tested negative. From everything that
I have read, I have to think that PBFD is extremely dangerous in a nursery
environment - and any breeder that has it is extremely unfortunate -( but
they shouldn't be persecuted because it can happen to any breeder really).
Also, most important, PBFD is NOT a death sentence and a lot of birds test
positive but never contract the disease. A positive test does NOT equal
the disease. Also, the disease is not really that common....and it is on
the decline in the U.S. (despite the fact that apparently the viral
particles are everywhere...especially if you read Ernie Colaizzi's article
about the extreme dangers of bird fairs - and apparently reptile exhibits,
raffle tables (without birds present), bird club meetings (without birds
present), etc...... LOL).....

Best prevention is: Get your babies from a closed aviary. Feed a good
diet. Help your birds develop a good strong immune system via exercise,
diet, etc.......

Okay....Take care Suzanne. I hope that root canal goes easy.

Mona, glad you found them. They look pretty sound to
me. I'd still like to collect people's papers and
store them in a binder. Maybe not in the fly building
though since that box gets ravaged regularly it
appears. I'd like each person's papers stored in a
separate glassine. The binder can be held by either
you or me, but I'm a good organizer, and don't like to
post much, so it would give me a job to do, unless you
would prefer to do it.

I'm having a root canal done today and will be home
afterwards - taking the day off from work. Wish me
luck!

Suzanne

Okay...I think I am going to try and set you both up as co-moderators in a
bit....

That way, if anybody has a good picture to set up on the Group
Description....you can!

Thanks.

.....and since I finally found this in my files...I'm going to repost Dr.
Bennett's recommendations for health requirements for the flyers. I think
these are good veterinarian guidelines and anybody who flies should be aware
of them:

Recommendations for Seattle Fliers

1. Exam performed by an avian veterinarian, annually

2. CBC (Complete Blood Count), annually

3. Chemistries (liver values, kidney, Total protein, Calcium, Ck,
cholesterol), annually

4. Cultures (choana and cloaca) annually

5. PBFD test if under 1 year of age or newly purchased (less than 6 months)
and is an old world species, one time.

6. I recommend Eclectus have the polyoma vaccine for their own protection
due to their high susceptibility to this disease.

7. I would not allow birds under 1 year of age or newly purchased birds
(under 6 months) into the club until they are older or have been in the home
over 6 months and had the above tests. For young birds this is for their
own protection as well.

8. If a member acquires a new bird they must quarantine for at least 3
months and have an avian veterinarian check after quarantine(As well as
completing above tests).

9. Unfortunately I would recommend that Budgies, Lovebirds and Parrotlets
not be allowed in the club with larger parrots (if there is enough interest
maybe they could have their own session and we could recommend specific
testing for those species at that time)and that cockatiels initially have a
Chlamydiophila panel (including PCR) since they are known carriers of this
disease.

10. I would have a veterinarian review new members on a case-by-case basis
and recommend further testing if indicated.

11. I would devise a health card where the veterinarian can make a statement
like "to the best of my ability this bird appears healthy and free of
contagious disease". Also I would have check boxes for recommended tests
and a place for the DVM to indicate if further testing was done. I would
also have blanks for subsequent years so the DVM can easily fill it in. I
think it is OK to give people 1 year to 18 months to complete annual exams
once they are an established member.

12. I would ask members not to take their birds anywhere else where the bird
will be in the same immediate area as untested birds (pet stores, bird clubs
etc) or allow untested birds in their home. Also, I would ask members only
to board their birds at places that require testing (Denise's, Wings N'
Things, Charlene Lamb, others?).

Lastly, I want everyone to understand that this will never be a guaranteed
disease free situation and that each member needs to weigh the physical and
mental benefits against the possibility of disease. I believe the plan I've
laid out is a reasonable one that minimizes the risk of disease since you
can NEVER totally eliminate that risk anytime an animal is in close
proximity to other animals.

Sincerely,

Tracy Bennett DVM Diplomate ABVP - avian

Wah Lah! You are both co-moderators!

In this group, we are all the kings! LOL.....

Okay....so, if anybody has a good flight picture, go ahead and add it to the
group profile. I looked through my photos and I don't have any really good
photos of my birds flying here at work.....I have some nice photos, but they
are of Babylon eating a cherry....cute to me....but not quite what I think
we should have on the description page.

Anybody else? I th ink we need a good picture of a flying bird.....If you
guys don't have any, I do have some pictures that Andrew took of Lonn flying
Shredder at the old fly building but I thought it would be nice to use one
of your birds.......

Thanks
