Description

A small dog full of personality the Westie is energetic, determined, and affectionate. Originally from the west highlands of Scotland they were bred to hunt vermin in the rocky terrain of that cold and windy climate. The hard white coat and compact, muscular body were bred into this breed to protect it from the environment and to enable it to do its job well. The same holds true for the serious teeth this small dog owns. With one quick snap of the jaw, this cute little white dog can dispatch a possum, lizard or rat and many a Westie owner has been gifted kills by proud little white dogs.

Westies are spunky, active, intelligent dogs. They enjoy hanging out by the fire on a cold winter’s night, but would be just as happy to patrol the back yard’s perimeter in the damp and cold. Most will say they are not lap dogs and while a few will prefer to be with you on the couch, most will just as soon give you a smooch, endure a hug and take off to see who might be passing by out front. Like all companion dogs they will benefit from training classes, they just may want to do it their way.

This Scottish breed is a game terrier, loving the outdoors. Even though Westies can be mischievous, naughty, stubborn, feisty, they are loving and devoted companions.

Owning a Westie is a responsibility, if you're looking for a cute toy/lap dog, they're not for you. Westies are very special dogs but not for everyone. They require considerable care, grooming and training especially as puppies when they are wilfull and stubborn. They are not a dog to be left in the backyard or alone at home. They love their owners and must be part of the family.

Responsible owners will have a secure fenced in area for these clever and adventurous dogs especially on large properties. They will also feed their Westie a healthy diet of raw meat and uncooked vitamised vegetables and fresh bones.

Join the list and network with others who love their Westie as much as you.
