POLLED GOAT GENETICS

This is a group dedicated to sharing accurate information on *Polled* dairy goat genetics.

There is a lot of misinformation, old wives tales, and just plain incorrect 'word of mouth' regarding the genetics and breeding of 'polled' dairy goats.

The *POLLED* gene in dairy goats is a *SIMPLE DOMINANT* trait.

In other words, if the polled gene is present your animal will be polled. You will see that the animal is hornless and the polled *bumps* will be easily visible.

A polled animal inherits a polled gene from ONE or both parents. That translates to "It takes one to make one."

Genetically polled kids have many times had their heads 'burnt' (disbudded) erroneously. This leads some pedigrees to appear that polled genes will skip a generation--which is NOT THE CASE.

Since the majority of all polled goats are Heterozygous polled, they still carry the recessive gene for horns as well. Thus, and with wonderment to many, when two 'POLLED' (hornless) goats are bred together the resulting offspring can still be horned. Many 'assume' that polled to polled will make only more polled - this is simply not the case!

Much of the information will be from breeders that have utilized polled genetics--some for many years or decades. We also welcome input from the scientific community as well, as there seems to be little research and recorded outcomes available on polled genetics.

Everyone with a desire to learn more, or share their information on polled goats is welcome to join.

Please-NO politics, religion, or spammers. (You've been warned!)
