Hi everyone!

Just a few quick things to tell you about this month:

I've had a couple sad-luck bunnies come in:

First is Nutmeg.  She has lived her entire life in a 1' x 2' wire bottom cage.  (And she's about 7 pounds, and barely had room to move in the cage.)   No toys, no litter box, nothing but food and water.  She's two years old, and the teenage girl that owned her just stopped paying attention to her, so there she sat, day after day, week after week, month after month.  When the owners first contacted me about her, I wasn't going to take her in as I was pretty much at capacity, but when they sent me a pic, and I saw how she was being kept, I told them I'd take her.  I can't understand why the girl got tired of her, as she is as sweet as can be.  Not a mean bone in her body, wants simply to be petted and loved.  Soon I'll get her in for her spay, then I'm sure she'll find a home quickly.  She has no issues, and used the litter box as soon as I provided her with one.  She is simply a delight.  She's two years old, white with orange spots.

Next is Mayor.  This poor boy was at a horse farm with some other rabbits.  Here's what this boy's life was like...this is from an e-mail from the gal that took him from the farm: "They kept him outside in an improper hutch with other rabbits. They neglected and abused the rabbits. The other ones ran away since the children left the hutch open. They would take Mayor and drop it on its head, throw it around, and tie it to a leash and hang it. My friend boards her horses at the farm so everyday she'd feed the rabbit, tried to cover the open hutch in cold weather, and tried to take care of it. If it wasn't for my friend the rabbit wouldn't be alive."
Well, Mayor is now here with me and quite the sweet boy.  Understandably, he will flinch if touched around his neck, but other than that area, he loves to be petted.  He is scheduled for his neuter this coming Tuesday.  He is absolutely beautiful - a lop, white with black spots.

And third is Ms. Pickles, a Lionhead bunny.  As I write this, she is a very sick bunny. She was kept in a small cage with pine shavings, which were soaked in urine.  She had urine burn on her "bum" and stunk of urine. And while with her past owner, she suffered some sort of blow to her jaw.  Most of her teeth were cracked, and rotted and fell out.  No treatment was given to the rabbit.  She only had one bottom tooth left, which grew so long that she couldn't eat on her own.  She is in a foster home and Sondra, her foster Mom, took her to my vet and I had some work done on her. My vet discovered her jaw was severely abscessed from the broken teeth not having been taken care of. Jaw abscesses are very hard for a rabbit to recover from. The abscess moves from their mouth to sinus cavities and everywhere in the mouth and face. We did surgery on her, and stitched her up, but she is far from out of the woods.  She is still a very sick bunny at this point. We'll do what we can for her, and if she gets through this, I'll have her spayed and find her a new home.
She's run up quite a vet bill - maybe I should change her name to "Goldie".  LOL

Anyway, those are the three sad stories, but there is good news: adoptions continue to go well.  I recently placed one of the "shed bunnies" that was here for a year and a half looking for a new home!

And found a home for the last 4 mice I had.  My vet's brother adopted them, so I *know* it's a great home!  But I gotta tell you, mice are hard to find homes for.  Harder than rabbits, dogs, or cats!  But, after 4 months, they finally found their forever home!

And, one of the two remaining Chihuahua pups we have will soon be going to a new home.  Charlotte, who has adopted several dogs from us over the past 10+ years, is going to take "Sam".  She is going to continue to work on socializing him, and he will eventually be placed with Charlotte's Mom.  That's great news - Sam will have a wonderful life with her Mom as she spoils her pets and treats them like they are her "fur-kids".  LOL

Also, my brother (over the past 6 months) rescued two Iguanas.  One was simply unwanted by the prior owner, but the other was found abandoned in a park with two broken front legs, and was nothing but skin & bones.  She was quite aggressive toward people - can't blame her for that - but in just the past 6 weeks she has made an amazing recovery.  She now sits on my brother's lap while he watches TV and shuts her eyes in delight while he pets her.  So cool to see!  Anyway, he's now become an informal "reptile rescue" - but (LOL) just for critters that don't eat "live food".  None of us here want to watch something eat live food!  He is keeping these two "Iggys", but we've made the offer to the SPCA to help out with any lizards that need rescue.

Lastly, I have three "feral" kittens here that I trapped after they were born in the woods.  If anyone has it in their heart to take them, socialize them and perhaps make them barn cats or such, it would be wonderful.  They are only about 7 weeks old, and all are tiger-stripped.

I guess that's about it - have a great holiday weekend - and be safe!

Thanks again, and speak to you next month!
