Has anyone here ever seen a statistical history of
rabies for Tennessee, similar to the one above
for Pennsylvania ?

Check out how the number of cases for domestic
dogs have evolved.

Have you ever heard an explanation of why squirrels
do not contract rabies ?

I never thought about it before today, but
if this disease was being transmitted via
squirrels, the area I live in would be much
more dangerous.

Squirrels can contract rabies, as this page of stats
from Pennsylvania shows:
http://www.agriculture.state.pa.us/agriculture/cwp/view.asp?a=3&q=143349

Maybe someone else can explain why it's so rare in
squirrels. Also, aren't groundhogs considered an
RVS in some states, and they're our largest
squirrels, right?

NOT a squirrel person, need educating, ;-)

Re: squirrels and rabies?

Cindy:

That is a pretty interesting website you noticed.
It's interesting to see how the numbers for some
species have changed over the years.

Domestic dogs were a huge problem until 1948
and I wonder if other states would have similar
trends (?)

Our current rabies laws for dogs must go back
to the mid to late 1940's if the numbers in
in other states declined as rapidly as in PA.

... I haven't found a chart for TN similar to the chart for PA. I did find a list of cases in TN for 2008: <http://health.state.tn.us/FactSheets/rabies.htm> ...
