This discussion forum is a companion to the Peregrine Falcon Nest Camera displayed at the UC Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group website, www.scpbrg.org. Our intention is to provide a resource where the public may learn more about Peregrine Falcon breeding behaviors observed on the nest camera, and to discuss recent sightings of Peregrine Falcons in the North San Francisco Bay Area.

The California Peregrine Falcon population was reduced to just two known productive pairs by 1970. The UC Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group played an important role in the population recovery by breeding falcons in aviaries, fostering young to failing nests in the wild, and releasing young at “hack” sites.

As the population increased we began to see Peregrine Falcons in the San Francisco financial district and placed a nest box near a commonly used perch on the PG&E Headquarters Building in 1987. Sixteen years later in 2003, Peregrine Falcons nested for the first time and have been a closely watched fixture of downtown San Francisco ever since.
