The first nesting season of the downtown City Hall Peregrine Falcons successfully concluded in Spring 2007.
“Jose” and “Clara”, a young yet famous pair of Peregrine falcons, successfully hatched and fledged three young in June 2007 (named Hiko, Spirit, and Esperanza by local schoolchildren). The highlights of this first season are available at the website of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group @ www.scpbrg.org.
Hiko (male) and Spirit (female) left downtown mid-summer. Esperanza stayed in the vicinity for several weeks after fledging into early September, 2007.
A most unusual event occurred with Esperanza and Spirit, the two female young. A very dedicated birder in the North Bay read the bands of two juvenile Peregrines in Emeryville, and gleaned the information needed to determine that Esperanza and Spirit were visiting. Esperanza is now being tracked by North Bay falcon fans.
Sadly, José disappeared mid-July, 2007. Subsequently, a new tiercel, named “Carlos”, has moved into downtown San Jose. He has been seen with Clara since August of 2007. Though other suitors have passed through the area, as of mid February, 2008, it appears that Carlos and Clara will be the San Jose City Hall Peregrines.
The Discussion Forum for the San Jose City Hall Peregrines operates during the nestcam season, and is conducted by staff Biologists from the U.C. Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group who have worked with Peregrine Falcons for 30 years. The biologists will be available to answer questions about biology and behavior.
For the benefit of all our members and our staff, KEEP THE TOPIC OF DISCUSSION SPECIFIC TO THE SAN JOSE CITY HALL PEREGRINE FALCONS. Off topic discussions WILL be removed.
