We are backyard poultry enthusiasts living in San Mateo county, California and environs. We discuss all aspects of urban chicken husbandry, as well as a dose of gardening and composting now and then. Okay what about rats, we've had that prob here in Oroville, lots of wild (outdoor) type rats, and they will eat ANYTHING.  they even eat dog food if it's left

I don't think so. They all lay in the coop in the nesting boxes. A few of the girls would escape their enclosure (no roof) which is quite a large area in the

Is there any chance they are laying but a crow or squirrel is taking the eggs? Several folks have posted about thus problem in the California Poultry People

Hi Joel many hens, if they lay consistantly will only lay for up to, as you said 3-4 yrs. then they begin to sluff off, sometimes laying tiny eggs, or huge
