Sunday.WOW!!!!!!! Hope to have a lot of fun.

I hadn't heard of the Canadian Shiba Club . Would like to hear more
about it. Please leave the message on the list and I will pick it up
when I get home. Thanks .I have beeen thinking about forming a club ,now
I wouldn't have to.I am from Ontario,Canada

I'm kind of a newbie in here. I don't yet have Shiba but I'm very interested! I
have Samoyed, and now I'd like to know some things about Shiba!
Does Shiba come along well with other dogs (from different breeds and/or
Shibas)? Could I own one if I live in flat? And so on...
I will be grateful for any info!

No.... I don't believe so. The Kai is a Japanese breed, similar to the Akita.
The
only ones I've seen are brindle. I can't remember if they're just a little
smaller
or a little larger than the Akita, but the last I heard they were still
considered
a rare breed here. Never heard of Klee Kai of Alaska.

The Kai is from Japan and is a larger breed than the Shiba. The Klee Kai are
more like a minature husky.

The Canadian Standard was based on the Japan Kennel Club Standard for the
Japanese Breeds, which encompasses Akita, Kai, Hokkaido, Kishu & Shiba. The
colours brindle and white occur in the Akita, Kai, Kishu. The Japanese have
*Judging Resolutions* which detail the breeds themselves, but was not
consulted when the Canadian Standard was adopted. Very unfortunate.

Clarifying the Standard is one of the projects of the newly-formed Club,
Shiba Inu Canada.

Hi Everyone:
Nice to hear from you. thanks for the info on which colours are
permited.
The Kai I was talking about is from Japan. It is the Kai Kan. It is a
medium sized dog ,pricked ears and curly tail and the ones I have seen
have all beeen brindle. they were to be breeding stock but in the past
21/2 years have had only one pup from two bred females. Not sure what
the problem is.

Hi Marion,
The creams are now faulted as a color here in the U.S. and there seems to be
several varieties: pink, liver and black pigment around the eyes, lips, nose,
etc. Unfortunately, the pet stores are promoting them as "rare" here and are
taking the consumer's money. Brindles and pintos are also not accepted colors.
The black and tans are called the "rich man's shiba" in Japan as they are
difficult and expensive to breed and get the correct urajiro markings. Also,
the black and tans here seem to have a softer coat which might be a result of
the Japanese sending over their inferior stock. There are some Champion creams
around and a cream who is very successful iin the junior handling ring, also
obedience.

I've not shown Shibas since just after we went AKC, but as far as I know,
creams are still not allowed. However, I may be way off base on that. I
showed when we were rare breed.... then in CKC. In fact, my boy is Canadian
pointed, but doesn't have a single AKC point. When I moved back to South
Carolina five years ago, I just didn't have time to show. Anyway.... on the
brindles.... I never know there was a brindle Shiba. I certainly have never
seen one of those.

My opinion of the creams is that they're not as desirable.... at least to
me. I'm from the old school.... b/t, red, red sesame.

However, if you go back to the source, the Japanese only had one standard
for all five breeds.... the Shiba, the Akita, the Kai, and the other two. I
can't remember those right now. The only thing different in each breed was
the color and the size. I really don't know why there was a color
difference. The Japanese may have had a reason, but I don't know what it
was. Oh well, just my opinion.

Hi Everyone;
I have noticed that the chatter has slowed down in the last little
while . Everyone must be busy. Me too!!!!! I thought I would start a
discussion about the different colours in the Shiba lines. In Canada we
are still aloud to show the creams as well as the standard colours(
red,red sesame, brindle, black and tan). In the US I understand that they
can no longer show the cream colour dogs( I think)could be wrong. I was
told that the creams come from two recessive genes so it is an
undesireable trait to breed.I have seen a couple and they are cute aand
can be very showy. Any thoughts?????I have also seen some Black and tans
that the markings are very different. I have yet to see a brindle in the
shiba. I have seen the brindle Kai (close relative of the Shiba) from
Japan.Lets chat!!!!

Marion, I totally agree about the getting up early, and the travel, but I do
that anyway. so that wasn't much different. I just feel you love them one way
or the other and showing is a hobby and an ego trip. I also enjoy visiting
with friends and sharing and eatting together. That goes along with it too.

Breeding!!!!! Well for me it is stress to the max!! I worry too much
about my bitches. The last litter ,it was Angels first, I slept on the
kitchen floor next to the whelping box for almost two weeks .I wanted to
be sure she felt comfortable sleeping in the box. She was fine and after
having the pups wanted them in her CRATE and that was that. And to think
I was worried. The pups are worth it and so is Angel.
So the only differences I can see is maybe I'm a little crazier then
some pet owners.Yes when they not showing they are house pets and couch
potatoes. Hutchie sounds like a hoot.LOL

Marion: I totally understand your peoblem. We feed 4 shibas together in the
mid morning. They each have their own dishes. They eat right away so no one
else gets their food, any left in a bowl is fair game for anyone else. They
are pretty good eaters. But now and then one of them will just stick their
nose up and wait out something else. That is usually because someone how was
visiting us game them some table scraps, we NEVER do that, so then for the
next day or two at least one of them will be a fussy eater or not eat at all.
Then they get the hint, don't eat and there is no food coming from friends.
They start eating again. You know they won't starve, just put the food down
at about the same time each day and pick it back up 10-20 minutes later and
don't give snacks or encouragement with gravy and such, and put it down again
tomorrow. You will stop having problems or you will just figure "OK" they
will eat tomorrow. No problem. Good luck and I hope I helped.

My folks have a shiba, so I suppose I am his sibling. I moved away from
home 5 years ago to attend university, and I was replaced by a cuddly
little Shiba. His name is Hutchie and he has taken advantage of his only-
child status. He is a bossy, demanding, pushy little guy. But of course
he's very cute and very charming . We have developed a bit of sibling
rivalry . Hutchie gets quite annoyed when I have the nerve to kick him
out of my bed when I'm visiting. Or when I call to talk to my parents, he
sits on his hind legs and yodels and yaps and I am unable to get a word
in. Of course there is that wonderful puffy spot of fur between his ears
and his enthusiastic greeting when I come home that sets it all straight
again. I work in a bookstore and I hover around the animal section when
customers are browsing through the dog breed books. I always make them
turn to the shiba page and I heartily recommend the breed for those who
can handle them! There is the down side of course. My family has
discovered that it is not wise to leave Shibas alone for very long.
Hutchie has chewed his way through couches and partially through walls
(yes! walls!!!)My folks are pushovers, so Hutchie got the upper hand
early on. So now they have to be pretty careful with him and take extra
precautions (a babysitter!!). All this could have been avoided with some
proper training early on. But he really isn't that bad. My folks are
pretty wacky themselves, so it's a good match. I can't wait until I move
into a house so that I can get a niece or nephew for Hutchie!! The tan
guys are my favourites. Sorry I rambled, but since there's not too many
of us yet, it should be OK for now! Hokey Dokey? How does the experience
of being a breeder and participating in dog shows differ from being just
a regular old person with a fluffy friend??

bye!

Hi fellow Shiba lovers,

I am Karen Nelson in Lincoln, Nebraska. My husband and I have a 3-year-old
red female Shiba named Becky. She is (usually) a total delight. She is boss
over our 4-year-old Siberian Husky Nellie. All the neighbor kids love both
our dogs and the dogs love them as well. One day I was walking just Nellie,
and some kids stopped to pet her and asked, "Did you sell your little dog to
that house over there?" I said, "well, heck no!," and they said "that's
funny, cuz there's a dog over there that looks just like yours." We walked by
the house in question and lo and behold, from behind a privacy fence, I heard
that familiar Shiba guard-dog-bark, only it sound like a young voice. Farther
down there was enough space between the wood fence to see a little Shiba head
sticking out and giving us what for! She sounds exactly like my Becky, and
she's *almost* as cute.<G>

Someone (was it Bob?) said their Shibas seem to be excited when they see their
own kind. Becky seems just the opposite. When we walk by the Shiba
neighbor's house, Becky acts like she doesn't even exist. Any other dog and
she shows plenty of interest. I found that rather interesting but did draw
the conclusion that she does know her own kind.

Well I could go on and on, but I guess I'll wait and see who all is out there.
:)

Greetings Diana and David;

I have a question for you.all but one of my Shibas are good eaters. The
Male is very fussy.I have tried almost everything to get him to eat on a
regular basis. Sometimes I think he eats just because he so hungry, that
he can't wait any longer. Have tried the waiting him out trick and have
tried putting different things in his food and on his food. Any ideas
greatfully accepted.Thanks

15 months old and getting her ready for a showing. Stormy & Glorry gave us 2
male pups (so far called Thunder and Lightening in mid-August and we are just
enjoying them. These all carry the Tanasea Kennel Name and we got Stormy and
Glory from Debbie Meador. Both David and I a professional Dog Show
Photographers and we don't have very many weekends we can show dogs but Stormy
was in the top 20 for the last two years. We love our dogs and they travel
with us all year long.

If any of your are interested in the results of the Shiba judging from the
shows we Photo we will be glad to post them. Just let me know. I will also
post colors of dogs as well if you are interested.

God to go, the mail is waiting but just wanted to touch base.

Diana

Hello again! Our shibas both seem to have hay fever this year, or so the
vet thinks. We will find out if the itching leaves when frost arrives-
otherwise there is something environmental. Luckily Benadryl helps and
they have no problem chewing the children's kind.
I was thinking of eventually getting a third dog. Ours are pet quality,
so we don't have to worry so much about how the coats are looking,
though neither has shed recently. The male is just about to start
again. I wonder if getting a second male would be less troublesome than
a second female? In general he is MUCH more docile than she is, though
he has this delusion that he is the top dog. She can outsmart him any
time she likes, whether it's to get a bone or human attention.
I have noticed that over the two years both of the dogs are gradually
relaxing- they have stopped chewing the house also- and they are more
affectionate with us. Still, stubborn as ever! I like to think of it
as HEALTHY EGO:))

Hi! I started this list because I have 2 shiba inu dogs that I love
to talk about. Today I took the dogs on a loooong walk in a development
they rarely get to visit. Both of them were so happy they didn't drag me
around like they sometimes do. I haven't really so much trained them to
heal as I have learned to persuade them. Bronte is almost two. Though
neutered she is very interested in going anywhere she might meet a new
boyfriend. Niko is her half brother and is 3 months younger. He is very
happy go lucky and doesn't mind going anywhere, but if he spots a cat,
rabbit, etc lookout! We didn't meet anyone new today so we didn't get
the usual comment about how beautiful they are, they look like foxes
etc. There is another shiba near where we went- they bought him after
they met us. I sometimes think the dogs know there is another shiba
around because they get especially excited when they go near where he
lives- but it's probably my imagination. Anyway, since I already know
you are crazy about your dog, feel free to discuss him/her anytime here!
You are just the third
member here so there isn't much being said yet. Welcome again:))

Greetings;

Hi ,i am a Shiba breeder and totally enjoy the breed.I have two males and three
females at the present time. I enjoy the challenge that the breed presents in
most activities. Conformation is where I have them at present. Two oldest are
champions and working on the rest. Would love to here from other Shiba owners.

I subscribed today. Have 4 adult Shibas and 2 6week old pups. We have been
in Shiba for about 4 years and have two champions and are getting ready this
winter for show and finish another bitch. I would love to hear from others on
the shibatalk list and look forward to talking to you all now and then.

Welcome to the shiba inu onelist. I'm hoping that owners of this breed
can share anecdotes and information about these wonderful dogs. We have
two shibas, a red male and a red female. Bronte is a shy but feisty and
athletic female. She is extremely intelligent and literally thinks
before she acts. She is very good at finding ways to distract Niko, her
male half brother, so she can steal his chewflips.
Niko is no rocket scientist but he is amazingly placid, lovable and
cute- though he is a great watchdog. Everyone we meet wants to know
what our little "foxes" are and how we learned of them (from a book- we
had never seen them either.) Please share your shiba stories here:))
