SE AZ: Skippers at Red Mountain, near Patagonia, 7/11/2009   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #9977 of 10180 |
Ken Kertell has already posted highlights of our outing on Saturday, 11 July. I
now have a bit more to add.

I have just spread some of my catch from that trip and find that I have two more
interesting critters to add to the list:

Valeriana Skipper (Codatractus valeriana) 1
Texas Roadside-Skipper (Amblyscirtes texanae) 1

Both appear to be early, especially the former.

The valeriana was flying with and behaving like its congener, Arizona Skipper
(C. arizonensis). They showed a definite preference for shady mud underneath
rocky overhangs.

Insofar as C. valeriana is one of the prize bugs of our region, I might mention
that there is a good collection of photos not only of live and pinned specimens,
but also of the host plant, Tephrosia leiocarpa, at the Butterflies of America
website.
