Leslie Canyon, Cochise County, AZ Thursday July 9th   Message List

Sandy Upson and I went to Leslie Canyon, which is part of the San Bernardino NWR.
.The canyon, which is located just north of Douglas, yielded 21 species with a
couple of new species for this location. New species for the local were Dythemis
maya(Maya Setwing) and
Dythemis nigrescens(Black Setwing). The Black Setwing is pretty rare in Cochise
County probably due to its overall high terrain(almost all the county is above
4000 ft).Maya Setwing is known from three places in Santa Cruz County with one
record up till now for Cochise County in the Huachuca Mts. This Leslie Canyon
record is the eastern most locality in the state. All sightings of Maya Setwing
have been of males with a high count of six in Sycamore Canyon a couple of years
ago. It is only a matter of time until we discover a breeding colony as there is
a colony in Sonora just five miles across the line.Interesting was male
Blue-eyed Darners(Rhionaeschna multicolor) sharing this shady arroyo with
dugesi. This of course renders identification of both impossible unless they
perch, are caught,or a crisp flight photo is obtained. Here is a list for the
canyon. A photo of the maya is in the photo section of this list.
