Some time back, I believe Dennis Paulson asked about records of mites on
dragonfly species, although it may have been for families other than the
Libellulidae. I was photo'ing Boreal Whiteface and other odes in Rio Arriba
County, New Mexico the other day. I have seen mites on Cherry-faced Meadowhawk
at this site later in the summer, but have not noticed them on Whiteface until I
cropped this photo of a pair in wheel:

Dave and I are en route to the DSA meeting in Ft. Collins, CO.
We spent last nite in Elko, NV. We noticed the Humboldt River going thru
town and inquired about access. It turns out that there is a pathway
along the southern side of the river. Although the river was overflowing
its banks, it was not hugely doing so and we found several access
points. We had hoped to find Black Saddlebags, which are MIA for Elko
Co. We didn't,but we did find 9 species. Our report:
July 3, 2011
Elko County
Humboldt River, Elko 1/2 hr 9:45-10:15, 78F
Emerald Spreadwing - 1m
Emma's Dancer - m&f
Vivid Dancer - m
Western Forktail - many m, 1 f - in-hand ID
Darner sp - not Anax
Eight-spotted Skimmer - 1m
Band-winged Meadowhawk
Red-veined Meadowhawk - several ovipositing pairs

We also noted a high elevation lake near Wells, NV, also in Elko Co. We
had enuf time to go there for an hour.
We hoped to find Four-spotted Skimmers, another MIA, but although Angel
Lake was gorgeous, and at 8,000 ft, all we found were 3 bluets.

Kathy, that's really interesting. Here is the only visit I have ever made to the
Humboldt River (original field notes with common names added):

05-121
NEVADA, Humboldt Co.
Humboldt River, 4 road mi ENE Golconda P.O. on hwy 789, 4300’ (40°57’36” N,
117°25’06” W)
1 July 2005; DRP, NS; 17:00-18:40; hot, sunny, breezy; good-sized river with
muddy water, steep or shallow banks, desert shrubs to bank; river forms marshes
all along here; most dragonflies in lee of shrubs because of wind
(Spotted Spreadwing) Lestes congener - com in shrubs, mostly young

(Emerald Spreadwing) L. dryas - 1f; com in shrubs, mostly mature (record to
Odonata Central)

(Emma's Dancer) Argia emma - com on river

(Tule Bluet) Enallagma carunculatum - 2m 1f; few on river and in shrubs

(Blue-eyed Darner) Rhionaeschna multicolor - few over river and in shrubs

(Brimstone Clubtail) Stylurus intricatus - 1f; three teneral or young females at
about waist height in shrubs; Netta photographed a fourth

(Olive Clubtail) S. olivaceus - few of each sex at knee to head height in
shrubs; clearly mature; would fly some distance when disturbed; one male hung
straight down, note female about horizontal

(Eight-spotted Skimmer) Libellula forensis - few

(Variegated Meadowhawk) Sympetrum corruptum - 1f; f com, both immatures and
mature females

(Red-veined Meadowhawk) S. madidum - red male in shrubs

(Western Meadowhawk) S. occidentale - 4f; immatures com in shrubs

(Striped Meadowhawk) S. pallipes - 2m 4f; immatures com in shrubs; noticed they
often flew into shade and into nooks and crannies within shrubs rather than out
on edges; seemed to do that more than the occidentale did

It's a somewhat different list from a different spot on the same river on about
the same date. From the species list, you might interpret this to indicate the
season is much later this year than in 2005, and that might not be surprising.
C. H. Kennedy, of course, called our attention to this river in his 1917
publication on CA and NV. It would be interesting to check his species list.

The Brimstone Clubtail is kind of a mystery to me. I ran into that species (a
male and female) for the first and only time last summer, near Albuquerque in
johnsongrass bordering a muddy slow-flowing ditch near the Rio Grande. Nothing
really special about the habitat.  Although there are 30-40 Dot Map county
records oddly scattered from the Midwest to the Southwest and into western
Canada, there are only two user-submitted records on OdonataCentral from
anywhere in its range and no new county records. It would seem to be either rare
where it occurs or often overlooked ... or simply not documented on OC in
recent years. I'd be curious to hear anyone's experience with this gomphid.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,
There are folks who know a lot more than I about this species. But I can
tell you that it occurs on muddy rivers, and that not as many folks are
using Odonata Central as could be. Probably because there are so few
vettors, folks are only being encouraged to submit new county records or
new early/late flight data. But with species that are unusual, perhaps
we should all make more of an effort to report them.
That's also one of the purposes of this SoWestOdes discussion group. In
this group everyone is encouraged to report all but the most mundane
sightings.
Cheers!!
Kathy Biggs

Today Dave and I are in the area of Vernal, Utah. We drove up towards
Flaming Gorge. One especially sweet stop was at a 'Byway Turnout' on HWY
191 at ~8000 ft. We noticed a beaver pond down below the restrooms and
decided to check it out. I'm so glad we did as the day turned cool and
windy shortly thereafter. AND, one species was a lifer for us and
another a species we rarely see! Plus, the wildflowers were GORGEOUS!

Drove into Moab yesterday on HWY 128, alongside the Colorado River, on
the 'back side' of Arches NP.
We found Canyon Rubyspots at two locations.
Dewey Bridge - 2-3 males, photographed 2
Then we collected 2 specimens from a flooded sandbar near MM25; we
believe these will be the county vouchers for Grand Co.

Then today(7/12) we drove into Arches National Park where we found 9
species along the trail to Delicate Arch, all but 1 at the bridge over
the Delicate Arch Wash:
Paiute Dancer - 1 m, very poor photo
Plains Forktail - several, photos
No/Bo Bluet - hope to ID from photos
Darner sp, not Anax - 1 over the arch entrance
Eight-spotted Skimmer - 1 m, sight record only for Grand Co.
Widow Skimmer - many, inc. 1 mature male and a female ovipositing -
photo record for Grand Co.
Flame Skimmer - at least 1 male - photo record for Grand Co.
Black Saddlebags - 1 - sight record only for Grand Co.
Eastern/Western Pondhawk - photos of each. Species tbd from
photos....male was a Western for sure!

Cheers!!

I took a trip to Graham County with Sandy Upson on July 14th. Went to Smith Tank
in hopes of finding an unattached female Bleached Skimmer(LIbellula composita)
with no luck. Only one male in the drought plagued basin(it was about half the
area it normally is) even though there were plenty of Marl Pennant(Macrodiplax
balteata. I still have never seen a single female composita while seeing plenty
of tandem pairs.

A trip to Bonita Creek to see if Desert Shadow-damsel had emerged was ill timed
as we were in second of a three day dry spell with no clouds whatsoever. We did
find three Swift Setwing (Dythemis velox)which if it gets established would give
Arizona a second locality for this species.

Dave and I went to the Matheson Marsh the morning of the 14th before
heading out on the La Sal Loop.
Unfortunately, we got mixed up on the Loop and didn't find Warner Lake,
but we did find Don's Lake. Our report:
Matheson Marsh, at Lion's Park, Moab, UT
Variegated Meadowhawk - quite a few
Twelve-spotted Skimmer - 1 female
Blue Dasher - 1 female; photos taken, possibly a new county record
Wandering Glider - unable to catch or photograph, but seen well directly
overhead - possibly a new 'sight only' county record
Spot-winged Glider - 1 specimen collected, but not a county record
Black Saddlebags - this species possibly seen, but not well enuf even
for a 'sight' only record.
Common Green Darner - several, inc. wheels

Don's Lake - we can't find on a map at all!!
Bluet sp tbd - one male collected
Aeshna sp.... very large size with bold blue mosaic pattern, reminded us
of a Walker's Darner. It looked for a mate in the sedges at the edge of
the lake where the stream flowed out.

On 4 4/10 Rd, county and state unknown!! We saw 2 Pacific Spiketail
cruising down the road. IF ANYONE CAN HELP US DETERMINE *WHERE* DON'S
LAKE (NEAR HIDDEN LAKE)OR ROAD 4 4/10 WERE, WE'D APPRECIATE IT. WE DO
THINK DON'S LAKE WAS IN UT BECAUSE THE SIGN SAID "UTAH PUBLIC LANDS TRUST"

We actually ended up taking about a 120 mile 'long-cut' by mistake.
In Mesa Co., Colorado on John Brown Rd. we tried to catch a Black
Saddlebags.

Then today (the 16th) we are in Hanksville, UT. Between 6:45 and7:15pm,
in 90F weather or more, we tried to find Odes on the Fremont and the
Dirty Little Devil Rvs, but couldn't find even a forktail, although the
habitat looked good. Weird!!

CHEERS!!

Visited Whitewater yesterday from 10Am to 12Pm. This locality is known for its
huge numbers of wintering Sandhill Cranes and sometimes is drawn down quite a
bit ,even dry, in summer. This summer in spite of the horrible drought down here
there was a good amount of water. The onset of the monsoon had sent some
floodwater into the basins but I think Game and Fish had been pumping to keep
the main cattail and bulrush basin filled.Nothing too exciting was seen but it
has great potential. I got a little distracted by the large numbers of
Bombyliids(Bee Flies) nectaring on Lippia and Hydrophylium.

We didn't have much time but we made one last stab at Utah Odes by
driving SE of Baker, NV.
The wind was fearsome, whitecaps on Pruess Lake @ Hwy 21, Millard
County, Utah . The wind was so strong, we couldn't keep our hats on -
even with chin straps held tight and the sand blasted our bare legs and
was painful. Despite this, we found a few Odes. Time ~noon; temp ~80F.

Emerald Spreadwing, Lestes dryas - 1 and perhaps a Millard Co. photo record
Western Forktail - m&f collected
Pacific or Plains Forktail - several, photos taken. ID tbd (don't have a
good photo editing program on this travel laptop yet)
Bluet sp - No/Bo type - a few
Darner sp. 1-2, Blue-eyed Darner male seen well
Twelve-spotted Skimmer 1-2, 1 f collected to scan for website
Flame Skimmer - 1 m

Dave and I had a permit to survey the dragonflies in the park. Like
everywhere else, the season is off to a late start.
At the high mt lakes (elevation ~ 10,000+ ft) we managed to find 4
species, almost all were teneral. The lakes were Stella and Teresa and
there was still snow at their shorelines. The odes were found below the
lakes, in wet meadows.

Spotted Spreadwing Lestes congener - probably this species. Specimen and
in-hand photos....may be a new record for White Pine, Co, NV. ID to be
determined when we get to Calif. tomorrow....
Darner sp, a male Aeshna, not Rhionaeschna nor Anax - just a quick
sighting over wet meadows with rushing streams. Very boldly marked.
Striped Meadowhawk - ~12 over the wet meadows
Western/Band-winged Meadowhawk - 2 photographed.

In the evening, we gave a one hour program to a class of teachers! That
was wonderful!

Cheers!!

Hi all,

We're back in California (but won't be home to Sebastopol until the eve
of Aug. 1). We've reread everyone's emails and have settled on late
September for the 2011 Blitz. Several folks couldn't make it in Oct. I
think that the new date should exclude no one!
The exact dates will be Sept. 23-26, with the main dates the 24th and 25th.
Please let me know if you can come; HOPE SO!!

We added 3 lifers during our travels. Besides the Boreal Whiteface, also
the Belted Whiteface and the Rainbow Bluet (thanks Dennis!!).
Eleven folks attended our Dragonflies of the State of Jefferson this
past weekend.
I'll update the 2011 Sightings site as soon as we return to
Sebastopol.....there have been so many good reports!
We're at our McCloud off-the-grid home, so can send and receive email
only when we drive the 20 mins. into town for wifi.

Cheers!!
Kathy

Doug Danforth, Richard Bailowitz, and I spent 22-27 July visiting 22
Arizona locations in Mohave, Coconino, Navajo, and Apache counties -
mostly north of the Mogollon Rim. We found 61 species, including three
new county records, as follows:

Anisoptera: 31 species

- Erythemis collocata, Western Pondhawk

- Erythrodiplax basifusca, Plateau Dragonlet

- Libellula comanche, Comanche Skimmer

- Libellula forensis, Eight-spotted Skimmer: Among others, 1
male at Page golf course pond, Coconino, 07/24. Normally found at higher
altitudes.

- Libellula luctuosa, Widow Skimmer

- Libellula lydia, Common Whitetail

- Libellula pulchella, Twelve-spotted Skimmer

- Libellula quadrimaculata, Four-spotted Skimmer: among others,
1 at Round Rock Reservoir, in sagebrush flats of Apache, 07/25. Normally
found at higher altitude forests ponds and streams in AZ.

- Libellula saturata, Flame Skimmer

- Libellula subornata, Desert Whitetail

- Macrodiplax balteata, Marl Pennant: one female at a golf
course pond in Mesquite, Mohave, 07/22. This is the northern most
population of the species in AZ. A visit to the same location on 8 July
8 2005 produced 8-10 individuals, so this colony may be in trouble.

- Pachydiplax longipennis, Blue Dasher

- Paltothemis lineatipes, Red Rock Skimmer

- Pantala flavescens, Wandering Glider

- Perithemis intensa, Mexican Amberwing

- Sympetrum corruptum, Variegated Meadowhawk

- Sympetrum danae, Black Meadowhawk: 1 female at Page golf
course pond (northern Coconino sagebrush desert), 07/23 = new county
record. Normally found at higher elevations in alpine bog habitats, but
Dennis Paulson (personal communication) indicates that species in WA
sometimes occurs in desert (sagebrush steppe) ponds.

- Sympetrum semicinctum, Band-winged Meadowhawk

- Sympetrum pallipes, Striped Meadowhawk

- Tramea lacerata, Black Saddlebags

- Ophiogomphus severus, Pale Snaketail: 8 along Tsaile Creek,
Chuska Mtns, Apache, 07/25. The streams draining the Chuska Mtns are the
only locations known where the species occurs in the state.

- Progomphus borealis, Gray Sanddragon

- Stylurus intricatus, Brimstone Clubtail: 1 male along Virgin
River in Scenic, Mohave, 07/23. Only AZ location where species has been
observed in recent years.

Zygoptera: 30 species

- Hetaerina americana, American Rubyspot

- Archilestes grandis, Great Spreadwing

- Lestes congener, Spotted Spreadwing

- Lestes disjunctus, Northern Spreadwing

- Lestes dryas, Emerald Spreadwing: uncommon/local in AZ. 12
found at Roof Butte, Chuska Mtns, Apache. One female at inlet of Willow
Springs Lake along Rd 260, Coconino, 07/27 = new county record.

Sycamore Canyon, Santa Cruz, AZ

9:30 AM – 12:30 PM; partly sunny then cloudy; 75 F

Pictures and information on location: see http://azdragonfly.net/welcome
<http://azdragonfly.net/welcome>

Yesterday (11 Aug.) Richard Bailowitz and I visited Sycamore Canyon
where we found 17 odonate species (see below). Surprising to us, most
species were represented only by one to relatively few individuals.

A few weeks ago the area – although not the canyon itself – was
ravaged by a huge wildfire. As we walked back upstream yesterday we were
met with a massive flash flood consisting of black burn sludge and
resulting from a thunderstorm somewhere upstream in the burned area.
Thick black mud deposits along the banks of the normally clear stream
indicated that similar flood(s) took place during the past few weeks.
These unusual events probably have profound effects on the stream
ecology (larval development and survival, etc) and may account for the
uncharacteristically poor odonate numbers and diversity.
