Hello everyone! I was away on vacation over the weekend and didn't
realize that there had been a change! This is great!
My name is Colette. My husband, Phil, and I are the proud parents of 2
cute doxies! Sammy (4 years), and Sasha (? years, rescue), both smooth
hairs! They are the joy of our lives! We were extremely excited to adopt
Sasha. At first Sammy and Sasha had a bit of trouble adjusting to each
other. Sam wasn't too pleased to have to share the love! But now it's not a
problem. Actually, this weekend, the vet's staff reported to us that
everytime Sammy was let out of his "boarding room", he would run over to
Sasha's area and cry till she was let out! That was so heartwarming to hear!
He wanted to make sure that she was ok!
All of us look forward to sharing things with you!
Colette and the little ones
Glad to hear the good news about your adoption of another puppy mill pup.
Though she won't take Thelma Lou's place it will help to fill the void. Good
luck.
Bob,
Every case is different, but our Leopold had a number of painful back episodes
when he was 2-3. X-rays indicated possible disc trouble in his thoracic
vertebrae. He went through the Prednisone and crate routine, too. He is now 7
years old and has not had back trouble since. In fact, an x-ray taken on Friday
showed an absolutely healthy, normal back. We began watching his weight more
closely. That and lots of prayers are the only thing that helped him. I hope
little Zoe will be as fortunate as Poldie.
Jeri
Thanks Trish and Barney! I can't believe that mom took a day of leave to
spend at home with me! Frankly, I can't wait until tonight......bring on
the presents!
Doodle Bell
Doodle Bell, it sounds like you are having a great birthday with your Mommy!
Have a very happy 3rd birthday!

Thanks for the birthday wishes......mom is going to give me a family party
tonight.
I will get green beans and carrots (minus the cake!). I do wonder if she
bought me a squeaky toy?????? She knows how I love my toys! My mom sang
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me this morning (in her gutsiest style ever) but when she
started singing "YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY" I ran for the back door.
Honestly, the woman NEVER stops! I have also had about a million
kisses.....I just want some rest. After all, I have to be in great shape
for my PARTY tonight!
Thanks again for the wishes......gee, it's great to be 3.

I was wondering the same thing. Nothing new has come through about Chula.

Dear Charlotee: Now I understand, just came back from a show and am

Hi All,
I just wanted to tell you all that I was so proud of my Doodster on Halloween
night.
I sat with her on my swing in my front yard while the kids came up wanting
candy.
She did not bark one single time. She did, however, wag her tail ninety to
nothing! After all, she didn't win the Best Tail Wagger contest for nothing.
I could barely contain her.....she wanted to love on everyone. Doodle has
unconditional love for everybody.....especially children (she came from a
home with two little boys). Anyway, she had a good time and received a few
pats on the head. Most of the kids were scared of dogs! I was so proud of
my baby.....I couldn't believe that she didn't bark.....but I guess she felt
safe in her mom's arms. BTW, today is her 3rd birthday and I took the day
off to spend with her.
Tisa
Trish,
I was so glad to hear the good news! I can tell you personally that I
adopted Jessica (my poodle) after my Brock passed on and she really helped me
through the grieving process. Of course she did not replace him, but she
needed me and that helped get me through. It is a wonderful thing that you
are doing and I can't wait to hear more about Barney's little sis!
Tisa (and Doodle Bell)
Many Happy Birthday Wishes to DOODLE BELL, who is a big 3 years old today.
We hope you get some extra green beans to celebrate, and lots and lots of
hugs and kisses.
Love from
Ladybug, Ruby, Daisy, Jack, and Chula

Last week, in the middle of so much sadness, I received a great note from
one of our dachshund rescue friends, Beckie Decker. In September, Dachshund
Rescue of North America (DRNA) rescued a puppy mill breeder dog, like my
sweet Thelma Lou, from Tennessee. Her name is Xena. On September 18, Xena
gave birth to 6 puppies. Three of the puppies did not survive, but 3 are
now in foster care with Beckie. Beckie wrote me about the puppies, and I am
happy to tell you that around Christmas time, Barney Fife and I will be
adding a little puppy sister to our family.
I know that no doggy will ever take Thelma Lou's place in my heart, or
Barney's either, but he is a super sociable doggy and he misses her so much.
I think that adopting a little friend a couple of months down the road will
be a wonderful experience for us all, and great companionship for Barney.
I also feel that by adopting another puppy mill rescue, we are carrying on
my sweet Thelma Lou's rescue legacy.
Barney's new sister will most likely be called Lucy, for Lucy Ricardo. She
is a sable shorthair, just like Barn, and she will be a tweenie when grown.
I am so grateful to Beckie and the DRNA for the excellent loving care she is
receiving, and for the opportunity to add her to her family. She will be
loved here.

Bonnie and Harry <bspiegel@...> (by way of "J. Fazio" <jfazio@xxxxxxxxx.xxxx) Date:
Mon Nov 1, 1999 12:59 pm Subject:Our Friend, Pippin Spiegelberg
This letter is from Bonnie, a lister from back in the Cybercom days. She
has lost her beautiful Dachshund, Pippin. Her address is at the bottom of
her email, if you'd care to write her. Jeannie
Dear Friends, it is with heavy heart that I tell you Pippin went to the
Rainbow Bridge at 8:45 Oct 20, 1999. Her passing was very peaceful. She had
been sick to her stomach a couple of times the day before and then had us up
several times during the night again getting sick. My prayer has always
been that God would give me a sign when the time had come us to make the
decision to set her free. We found her curled at the foot of our bed in the
morning, very unresponsive. We called the vet and took her in first thing.
He gave us two options, to start tests and ivs or euthanasia. We had
discussed this on the way over and decided we didn't want to put her
through any treatment other than to make her comfortable. She laid right
down on the table at the vets and went to sleep. she was telling us it was
time. Our vet was so gentle and kind and his technician who has an elderly
dachshund of her own, came in, gave us a big hug and cried as hard as we
did. I held her and Dr Chuckles (yes that's his name) gave her the
injection and she was gone in a minute-very peaceful. Harry and I are
almost cried out. We are having her cremated and will bury her
ashes on our farm. Harry had already selected a site. We will have a
memorial service for her at Christmas time when everyone is home.
She was well loved and gave all of us much joy for 17 1/2 years. She will
never be forgotten. God bless you little Pippin.
Love, Bonnie

Our other pupper (Max, 8 yo, b/t smoothie) has never had any back problems
(knock on wood) even though he's a good bit heavier than Zoe. We got
harnesses for ours also at recommendation of vet to avoid strain on the
neck. Both of ours get good walks most every day, plus have a big fenced
backyard to romp in. I think the difference between Max and Zoe is that
she's a jumper, and he's not. We try to prevent/discourage her from
jumping, but it's tough. When we come home in the afternoon she's on the
other side of the door, repeatedly jumping straight up and down until we
get the door open. Not for the next four to six weeks, though.

Sound familiar????
YUP..... as recently as last month.
He slept in the bed like normal, I put him in the floor, got dressed,
turned around, and he suddenly wandered back into my bedroom limping on
his FRONT leg. I thought maybe he stepped on something since I just moved
and was fixing things --- but there was nothing in his paw/pads.
X-rays showed it wasn't a tumor or infection, and my vet felt pretty sure
it was a bad disc well into his neck. I don't have a crate... He slept in
his bed all day, and I carried him in and out for 14 days. He did the
taper-down prednisone routine for 21 days. Poor Gracie was a nervous
wreck, would nuzzle him and try to sleep on him. He was VERY good, kept
quiet when I asked him, and we're starting back with about 4-5 blocks
walking this week. He's a tad impatient!!!
I can only assume that this is an hereditary problem, because he is in
better shape than most 11 year olds and nothing happened that I can
recall over the past month or two. He is a product of backyard breeding,
so the more I learned about dachsies, the more I realized that this was a
possibility since he'd had the initial episode 5 years ago. (That was back
when I had a fenced in yard and Maxx was a couch potato puppy with NO back
muscles)
My vet told me that Maxx should NEVER wear a collar again, because the
herniation or strain is in the cervical discs (that's why his front legs
were affected too). Maxx and Gracie are both walking with DoxieDelights
harnesses these days. I'd recommend them to anyone with a dachsie that's
had a back/neck injury, or actually to anybody who regularly walks their
dachsie. It really helps distribute the pressure and protects their long
little backs and necks when you have to pull them away from squirrels,
strollers, skateboarders, and road trash!!!!!
Maxx has bounced back from 2 pretty severe disc problems with conservative
care. I'm firmly convinced that this last time, it was easier because he's
in such good shape from the regular walking. I can't urge you guys
enough, to exercise your dachsies more --- GREAT for their backs, and a
lot more effective for weight control than cutting back on the food alone!
Best of luck with Zoe, we're thinking good thoughts for her, here in DC!
Danise, Gracie, and Maxx
p.s. If you walk them on cement sidewalks, you NEVER have to trim their
nails!!!!

Our Duffy had the problem in the neck area. It was very painful when he had

who won't be back tomorrow.
Chula, you've had a long road
and it's been too bumpy.

Hi Everyone!
Well, we're off and running. Everyone should be changed over now.
It might seem a bit confusing at first, but I am sure it won't be confusing
for long.
I'll re-cap it once more.
