I read this on the Greyhound-L and called Suzanne as I have adopted two of my rescues to a gall by the name of LaDonna....thank doG they are not the same person!! She has talked to many of the greyhound groups and told them of the situtation with this lady. I mentioned the fact that if she couldn't get a grey she might try for a whippet...Suzanne agreed. She gave me permssion to cross-post this.

Due to my own health right now and being unable to sit up more than
about a half hour at a time before getting horribly dizzy, the coming
Whippet Watch will have an extra week for ads, articles and the like.
If you haven't gotten something in, there's still time. PLEASE drop
me an email or call (and give me time to reply as I am not 'UP' much
right now) to let me know. I know there's a few real good ad spots
left and of course this will be the first issue to offer inside color
ads too at a great savings over other's rates.

Thanks everyone for the great support over the past year (past 6
years now!) I do so appreciate it!!!!

must go get horizontal.......
permission granted to fwd, please avoid any lists/groups that do not
allow commercial advertising.

Subject: Lost Whippet in So. California

I just heard from an owner who came home from work tonight as usual,
and her whippet was gone. No sign of how he might have escaped (dog
door/securely fenced yard).

Ani lives in Sierra Madre (Pasadena area) near Highland & Grandview.
Her dog is a black neutered male, 4 years old.
Lean, medium sized, gay ears.
Name is Boo
He is wearing a fancy red martingale collar with ID tags. He's not
micro-chipped.

We're wondering if he might have been stolen? When we were looking for
Isolde in NC, we got some great links on what to do about lost or
stolen dogs. I'd appreciate any info you all could forward on.

Ani's contact info:
Anichopourian@...
cell 310-650-7603
pager 626-648-0035

I can't believe this is happening again. We hope he is found - he is
very, very much loved.

A much needed face lift (of sorts) for the magazine's website was
JUST finished. I THINK everything is functional, but if anyone finds
an error please email me privately.

The website used to have a page for each and every issue of the
magazine. That has simply become *too* much to manage as well as
host. In turn now each *volume* (6 issue grouping) has its own page
and each issue has it's own spot on that page listing every article
in the issue under the cover shot. There's other changes but this is
the most noticeable and the one that took the most work.

Please take a moment to come visit and let me know if you think this
is easier to view and get around.

Thanks all! Have a great evening.

Folks, we need to take action on this. The proposal might look OK on the surface, but it could be very dangerous for hobbyists. In part, it alters the wording of existing law, replacing the term "Pet Shop Operator" with "Animal Caretaker", which is defined as ANYONE who "sells, exchanges, or offers for adoption dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, and other animals commonly kept as pets" even if there is NO CHARGE OR DONATION - you couldn't even GIVE away pets without a license, and the bill doesn't stipulate what the cost of that would be - scary! The Department of Ag. would have the right to inspect our homes and determine whether we are complying with the law. Some of the requirements are subject to interpretation, too, such as: "a stimulating, enriching environment". Please cross-post to all breed and pet hobbyist lists and write to the appropriate committee members.

Subject: AKC Alert: URGENT!!!!! Breeder Licensing Bill Introduced in Illinois

______________________________________________________________

This is a bill in some ways similar to the recent Virginia bill. Everyone in Illinois needs to spring into action! This includes all breeders and rescuers! Dogs, cats, birds, everything! And talk about invasion of privacy! The only breeders left standing will be the commercial breeders if this passes. Don't be shy here. If you live in another state, feel free to write
or call as well. Please cross post everywhere.

Charlotte McGowan, Legislative Liaison, ASSA, PCA, NAIA Trust

Breeder Licensing Bill Introduced in Illinois [Tuesday, February 08, 2005]

Illinois dog owners, your help is needed immediately to oppose HB707. Sponsored by Rep. Elaine Nekritz, the bill would amend the state's Animal Welfare Act by requiring licenses for all animal caretakers. This definition includes but is not limited to anyone who sells, exchanges, or offers for adoption dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, and other animals commonly kept as pets. Hobby breeders, pet stores, adoption facilities, shelters, and private individuals who sell, transfer or adopt out even one animal will therefore be subject to licensing under HB707. The Illinois Animal Welfare Act currently requires licensing for pet shops only.

Licensees will be required to:
* Provide new owners with health certificates and other information such as vaccination records, breeder's name and address, and contact information for any past owners.
* Submit to an inspection of their premises by the Department of Agriculture.
* Give animals a stimulating, enriching environment as a component of humane living conditions. HB707 does not define what is stimulating and enriching for dogs and cats.

Violators would be charged with a Class A misdemeanor. A second or subsequent violation would constitute a Class 4 felony for every day that a violation continues.

The licensing expansion proposed in HB707 encompasses thousands of individuals, and will be extremely costly and impossible to enforce. Moreover, it will likely force many reputable hobby breeders, rescue groups and concerned owners to abandon programs that match healthy, well-socialized animals with responsible homes. These groups provide an invaluable service
to the pet-buying public and to animal control departments across the stater add to enforcement challenges and leave even the most caring owner or breeder open to prosecution.

Existing Illinois law and indeed the federal Animal Welfare Act exempt hobby breeders from licensing and regulation. Congress does not believe in licensing for small-scale breeders, and neither should Illinois legislators.

What You Can Do: Contact the House Committee on Rules, where HB707 has been referred. Ask them to oppose this bill!

Ok I'm a bit puzzled, the new issue was mailed out a week and a day
ago, USUALLY it gets to folks pretty darn fast but seems this one
hasn't.

My question ... Could those who HAVE gotten theirs write me privately
please? I'd like to get an idea of how many are to their homes so I
can call the post office tomorrow and inquire about its drag in
mailing but can't without a bit of info first. I know it can take
sometimes a month but have been spoiled for the past year of them
getting to everyone within a 10 day period (usually within 5 days).

Also since it hasn't gotten to people as fast as it should have, the
ad deadline for the next issue I am pushing back to March 1st. And
FYI I do have TWO color ad spots still open. Please email privately.

Thanks everyone!

Hello Erica,

Welcome!  What is the breed of your other dog?

Your intro made me laugh just a little.  "...grace, sweetness, presence..." -- yep, couldn't agree with you more there.  But "...and desire to please"...?  Are you SURE you were looking at a Whippet? <VBG> (Mostly) just kidding: find each individual's right "button" to push and most Whippets will be eager to please their people... but intelligently, not unthinkingly.

Eight one-hour episodes - Premieres Wednesday, March 30

Bravo turns its behind-the-scenes eye on the competitive, quirky
world of show dogs in the new, original docu-series Showdog Moms &

Dads.

For millions of dog owners nationwide, competing in dog shows is a
labor of love... love of a particular dog, love of building a better
breed and love of beating the competition. "Showdog Moms & Dads"
reveals the struggles, the sacrifices, the thrills of victory and
disappointment of defeat the owners and their dogs face each weekend
as they compete in shows across the country. With dogged
determination, owners juggle careers, family and bank accounts to see

Okay, so I'm foolishly going to Crufts this year. Decided to tie the
first 2 days into a vacation to Britain and Paris. Day 1 to see hounds
and try to spend time going back and forth from the Whippet dog and bitch
rings and the Saluki ring. Day 2 for shopping. The rest of the trip is
sightseeing in London, Birmingham area for a day or so, Strattford, and
Paris. What recommendations do people who have been, or live in the area
recommend for dog related activities/visits (not travelling with any),
must sees, best avoided, etc. I'm leaving in 2 weeks with some dog
friends. For that matter, who will be there? Or would like to find a
way to meet during my trip? I'm going with 3 other dog people with
salukis.

Midwestern time and celebrating our versatile breed at top speed!

How you can help ...

First join us for the event if you possibly can!

Second make generous contributions to the general trophy fund. We are
hoping to have a trophy table worth drooling over, and with your
financial help, we can do just that! All donors will be deeply
appreciated and receive credit in the catalog!

Also, if anyone would like to sponsor a particular event or
placement, please email me at
<mailto:saesikennels@...,whippetwatch@...?subject=MWRA/WRANats>s\
aesikennels@...
or whippetwatch@... with the subject line: MWRA/WRA Nats to
reserve that slot. I'll do my best to reserve the position(s) that
you prefer. If that isn't possible I'll email to inform you that your
choice has been assigned to another contributor if necessary, or send
second and third choices with your initial donation request. Trophy
lists are up on the website for each of the three days' events, and
you can get to them by visiting: http://midwestwhippet.org/nats.html
and click on the photo links to the individual event lists.

Please mail all donations to:

Thank you all in advance for any and all donations and contributions
and watch the MWRA's website <http://midwestwhippet.org/ > for more

MWRA is very pleased to have as our match judge, Mrs. "Dottie"
Gammie, who has a long history with the breed, both in the ring as
well as in the performance field. More information will be available
at a bit later date.

I have lost my best friend "Gravy" He would have been 15 years
old on the 24th of April. He was the one to get me started in
obedience. We had fun ! I loved the looks on many of the judges
faces when we entered the outdoor ring in the early mornings with
dew still on the grass !! "your showing that whippet on '
this' " !!! yes I said. and Gravy never let me down.. in his day
he was the #5 obedience whippet on the Delany System (Front and
Finish) but he was more than that to me.. He had a very strong
background in Sporting Field bloodlines. He was just one amazing
dog. my friends all would tease me...' why dont you get a 'real'
dog they would say.. as owners of goldens and border collies...
We trained with Fred Hulme, who loved Gravy and said he had the most
amazing retreive of any dog he knew ! and that was a compliment from
a man whos golden has three 200's !!! I have decided to get
another whippet in the near future. Hopefull with the same
bloodlines. I love you Gravy.. and I will meet you at the
Rainbow Bridge

Gloria~

I am SO sorry for your loss.  Gravy sounds like he was a most amazing whippet.  My thoughts are with you.

The new Whippet Watch just went to the prepress house today and it
will be back to me the week before the national, and mailed on the
23rd (bar any unforeseen problems). For those who will be attending
the event between Tuesday and Saturday, if you would prefer to pick
it up instead of hoping it arrives before you leave or getting it
after you get home, please just drop me an email BY March 20th with
the subject line of "WW National Pickup" and I will gladly have it at
the booth for you. If I don't receive an email your issue will be
mailed.

This issue features Ringdove Whippets from British Columbia, I am
THRILLED to have the James' interview in the Watch and deeply thank
them for participating!

Also if you subscribed at last year's National, chances are very high
your subscription has now lapsed. Renewal cards (bright green) were
sent out last month with the previous issue for due and coming due
folks, however with the magazine taking so long arriving to everyone
I'm not so sure all of the cards arrived to their people. If you
think your sub is up, drop me a note and I can look it up for you. If
you've moved in the past 30 days, please drop me a note (if you
haven't already) to make sure I have the correct address.

Thanks everyone!!!!
