oh yeah...btw..the 10 is bad. BDS are a high uvb needing critter. 10 isn't
even a maintenance level for igs... for the igs I think the level needs to be a
minimum of 20. I will be calling big apple either tomorrow or Monday...I am NOT
a happy camper. This is just proof to my standing by my comment that no one
should use a merc bulb of ANY brand w/o owning a meter.

Give the meter a few minutes to adjust...you have to keep it still. On the box
from the bulb it tells you what they "SAY" the reading should be on the capture
the suns... I think a 100 watt at 12 inches is 50 and a 160 watt is 85 at 12
inches...
so far..Kris had "OK" readings...although NOT what they state...
and mine at 12 inches ...well...ummm..sucks!! we all need to call big apple
about this...my bulb is ONLY a week old.

Hmm...they can't take fluctuating voltage.
Some of you are using surge protectors that are not woking anymore.
Each time it gets a surge and suppresses it, a bit of the surge
protector gets used up. Since we can't know how many surges it's been
taking, we don't know if it's still actually working.
If someone has hunderds of dollars of merc vaps and wants to play it
safe, I'd recommend using a good protector like the ones used for
computers.
You can even get a kind of s.p. that fits in your circuit breaker
box, that protects the whole house.
Roger
Do you use vaps? If you do, or someone else reads this, what brand,
wattage, distances and meter readings do you get?

The group is set that any member has access to the databases and everything.
If anyone has some spare time...they are welcome to set up the database!! I know
everyone will be having fun playing with the meters by weeks end...well cept
Chris..he wont get his for about a week..sorry Chris...but that's how long it
takes to get to you...that is unless we paid about 35$ or more to get it to you
faster!!
No worries. It will be here soon.
Suggestion, in case it hasn't been done already....
on the group page...can we set up a DB for people to fill in their readings
on tested bulbs...something like:
brand - size/wattage - age - distance - reading
We may want to include the temperature at that distance and if any
obstructions were in the way.

Welcome to the group!
As an owner of a UVB meter it shows your love and
deep concern for your reptiles. As with almost all
products that are labeled for reptiles, the lights
are no exception. It's with these meters that we will
be able to prove or discredit the statements of various
companies as to their claims. I am sure that we may not
be making many friends with some of these companies
once we start testing out some of the uvb producing tubes
and Mercury Vapor lights. I think our battle may begin when
we find that some of these lights, especially the MV/Heat,
don't produce anywhere near what their claim is. One problem
I think we MAY discover is that at a distance that we get a
good reading will be a distance that we are also going to
cook our igs (or other reptile). Please be sure to post any
and all findings you get on any light actually. Also, don't
forget to test your windows! Many older homes actually have
windows that allow uvb to pass through. Be sure to test
your window screens, any screen tops, etc. When testing, be sure
to MEASURE the distance...don't forget to take in consideration
the size of the meter when measuring the distance!
Another goal we will have is to find the distance that is giving
the best readings for the lights of particular brands. You will
find that many tubes are wonderful at 8 inches, but raise that to
10 inches and the reading drops dramatically.
Again, welcome to the group and thanks for your caring enough
to spend the money you have to help our green(and other colors)
pets.

Hi all,
Has anyone else noticed that the meters read a 5 or so, at 12 inches
from a halogen floodlight? If you test this finding, I want you to be
careful to not overheat your meter's photosensor. We don't know how
that might affect them. I took a reading pretty close to a 50 watt
halogen (within an inch), then I started to worry about damaging the
meter.
Roger
As always...Meri to the Rescue!! Thank you so much for doing that! I'm a bit
busy here with two new rescue hatchlings... hmmm..wonder if herpsupplies is
interested in donating a che and some lights to scales and tails... I just might
have to hit John up on that one!

Totally off topic but.... My oldest son is in the Navy and is stationed
