Hello all,
WED 6/8/8
Warm but mainly dull and breezy.
1 female/immature Mandarin, 2 Redstart, 1 Great Crested Grebe (very
unusual), 52 Sand Martin, 1 Raven, 2 Red-Legged Partridge. Plus 22
Linnet.
Nash End: not a lot.
SUN 10 AUG 08
Coolish, grey, very breezy.
1 female/immature Mandarin, 2 Redstart, 13 Sand Martin.
Nash End: not a lot.
The immature Great Crested Grebe just north of the Arley footbridge
was my 1st ever record on the Worcs SO78 Severn.
As usual at this time of year, the Redstarts were along the Borle
Brook area of the Severn.
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
Keith Bates, London.

Hello all,
WED 4/6/8
Warm, mainly sunny.
SO78K BTO TTV – Severn north of Upper Arley, etc, incl Shrops: pair
of Mandarin with 3 young, 2 very late Goosander, 1 Coot (very
unusual), 3 Kingfisher, 1 Red-Legged Partridge, 2 Swift, 17 Sand
Martin, 8 Grey Wagtail, oddly no Willow Warbler.
SO78Q BTO TTV – Upper Arley, Nash End, etc: 1 adult & 3 juvenile
Lapwing, 1 Raven, 2 Kingfisher, 1 Heron, 1 Red-Legged Partridge.
Three successive years of Mandarin breeding records in SO78! A pair
and 3 young about 2 weeks old were along the Severn (in Shrops &
Worcs – not difficult as the county boundary runs down the middle of
the river) just south of Borle Brook. My guess is that they bred at
Borle Brook itself (Shrops CC) this year. The increasing
predictability of "late" Goosander along the SO78 Severn is also
beginning to make me wonder …!
SUN 8/6/8
Warm, sunny.
1 migrant male Reed Warbler (unusual), 1 Raven, 1 Garden Warbler, 2
Heron, 15 Sand Martin, 1 Coot on the river, 3 Swift, 3 Red-Legged
Partridge, 8 Grey Wagtail.
Nash End: 1 male Lesser Whitethroat, 1 adult Lapwing, 1 Kestrel, 1
Red-Legged Partridge.
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
Keith Bates, London.

Hello all,
THU 1 MAY 08
Very mild, sunny intervals, breezy.
SO78K BTO TTV - Severn north of U Arley incl Shrops: 1 male Redstart,
1 female Mandarin, 1 late Goosander, 1 Common Sandpiper, 6 House
Martin, 2 Raven, 27 Sand Martin, 2 Garden Warbler, 3 Swallow, 2
Kestrel, 3 Red-Legged Partridge, 1 Skylark, just 1 Willow Warbler.
SO78Q BTO TTV – Upper Arley, Nash End etc, all Worcs: another Common
Sandpiper, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Swift, 1 Raven, 8 Lapwing
(breeding site), 3 Sand Martin, 6 Swallow, 1 Heron, 4 Kestrel, 3 Red-
Legged Partridge, 4 Canada Goose, no Willow Warbler.
FRI 2 MAY 08
Very mild, dull. Quick pm walk-through.
1 male Redstart, 1 female Mandarin, 8 Sand Martin, 2 Kestrel, 1
Kingfisher, 2 Raven, 4 Red-Legged Partridge, 2 Swallow, 3 Canada
Goose.
Pound Green, edge of Wyre Forset: 1 male Tree Pipit, 1 Kestrel, 1
Garden Warbler, 4 Willow Warbler, 3 Swallow, 1 Red-Legged Partridge.
MON 5 MAY 08
Warmish, dull.
1 male Redstart, 1 male Mandarin, 5 late Goosander, 20 Sand Martin, 1
Kingfisher, 2 Raven, 1 Swift, 2 Garden Warbler, 2 Red-Legged
Partridge, 7 Swallow.
Nash End: the male Golden Pheasant, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Lapwing
(breeding site).
It's getting tempting to describe Kestrel as being "abundant" in this
area – a welcome change from a few years ago.
Normally only found post-breeding, it was my first ever spring
Redstart record (earliest previously was 6 June) in the area. If
anything, this only adds to the mystery about their precise breeding
site.
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
Keith Bates, London.
Hello all,
FRI 28 MAR 08
Heavy showers, breezy, grey, rather cold.
1 Mandarin, 2 goosander, 3 Raven, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Cormorant, 3 Red-
Legged Partridge, 3 Canada Goose.
Nash End: I gave it up for dead two years ago but presumably the same
male Golden Pheasant was again strutting and shrieking in its
favourite orchard. I've only ever found it during March to May: where
does it go to the rest of the year - Africa?! I first saw it in May
2002 – is it immortal?! Also, 6 Lapwing on their breeding site and 1
Skylark; plus 120 Fieldfare and 15 late Redwing flitting to and fro
across the county border.
SUN 30 MAR 08
Very mild, sunny, coldish breeze.
5 Sand Martin, just 1 Chiffchaff, 3 Raven, 2 Kingfisher, 2 Kestrel, 3
Cormorant, 2 Canada Goose.
Nash End: 8 Lapwing (breeding site).
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
Keith Bates, London.
Hello all,
THU 28 FEB 08
Fairly mild, sunny intervals.
Pair of Mandarin, 7 Goosander, 1 riverine Little Grebe, 1 daytime
Tawny Owl heard, 3 Raven, 20 Lapwing in flight, 1 Kingfisher, 1
Heron, 1 Red-Legged Partridge, 3 Cormorant.
Nash End: 1 Little Owl (silent but seen!), 6 Lapwing (occasional
breeding site), 1 Siskin, 14 Redwing.
After two consecutive summers of proven local breeding (although more
probably in Shrops than Worcs), I wonder if Mandarins will be put off
breeding this year north of Upper Arley by the extensive engineering
works at the outfall of Borle Brook (Shrops CC, possibly Worcs VC).
This major brook is easily – at the very least – their favourite
escape route and sanctuary when flushed on the Severn; and is also
always my "first guess" as to their precise local breeding site.
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
Keith Bates, London.
Hello all,
SAT 26 JAN 08
Mild, mainly sunny, rather windy, floods gone.
SO78K BTO TTV survey incl Shrops: 3 Mandarin (only 1 of which
unequivocally visiting Worcs), 2 Siskin, 3 Raven, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1
Kingfisher, 51 Fieldfare, 8 Redwing, 12 Red-Legged Partridge.
SO78Q BTO TTV survey, Upper Arley and Nash End: 2 Goosander, 3 Raven
(probably different birds from the above), 2 Kestrel, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2
Redwing, 1 Red-Legged Partridge.
Quite a drop in winter thrush numbers and the Siskin influx seems to be
largely over.
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
Keith Bates, London.

9 Goosander, 2 Little Grebe, 3 Siskin, 3 Kestrel, 1 Raven, 1 Heron, 1
daytime Tawny Owl, 3 Cormorant, 10 Red-Legged Partridge, 9 Canada
Goose (unusual), no winter thrushes.
WED 26 DEC 07
Fairly mild, weak sun.
3 Mandarin, 2 Siskin, 3 Kestrel including 2 males fighting on the
ground, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Heron, 1 Cormorant, 4 Redwing, no Fieldfare,
5 Canada Goose.
Nash End: not much.
SUN 30 DEC 07
Very quiet. Fairly mild, minor floods.
1 Redpoll, 3 Siskin, 2 Cormorant, 69 Redwing, no Fieldfare, 1 Red-
Legged Partridge, 10 Canada Goose.
Nash End: 1 Kestrel, 1 Heron.
A Woodcock (26th) and 4 Mandarin (30th) along the lowest stretch of
Borle Brook were Shrops CC but possibly Worcs VC.
Hopefully, more in a month or so.

Dear all (apologies for cross-posting)
This is just a quick note to inform birders about the (fairly) new bird listing
website, BUBO Listing (www.bubo.org/listing). This site has been set up to
enable the storage, sharing and comparison of bird lists of a wide range of
types (including county lists). Birders can use the website to enter their own
lists (not just a total, but the full species composition of the list). They can
then use the site to compare their list with those of other birders and can view
the lists of anyone else using BUBO Listing.
The site is entirely FREE to use. Just go to www.bubo.org/listing and click on
Register on the left-hand side to get (within a minute or so) a username and
password (which users need to ensure that only they can edit their own lists).
You can then view any lists already on the system or add your own lists. You can
also look at a directory of other BUBO Listers, or check out the latest list
updates that have been entered onto the system.
Lists are defined based on a number of factors:
Region: currently GB, UK, England/Scotland/Wales/NI, British counties,
Ireland and Western Palearctic. [World listing will be coming shortly!]
Period: currently Life or a given Year.
All/Self: whether you include self-found birds only, or all species recorded
Authority: who has determined which species are available for the given list;
e.g. BOU, UK400 club, etc. Different authorities consider different species as
'countable' (e.g. some split White Wagtails from Pied Wagtails, etc)
Lists are entirely transparent; anything you enter will be visible to anyone
else using BUBO Listing (with the exception of records flagged as 'sensitive',
for the purpose of guarding information on rare breeding birds).
At the time of writing, 293 birders have added a total of 700 lists to the site.
Currently, the most popular list types include:
BOU British Life - 213 lists
BOU British 2007 Year - 98 lists
UK400 British Life - 56 lists
AERC Western Palearctic - 37 lists
BOU Norfolk Life - 18 lists
We are constantly updating and improving the site. For example, we have just
developed a "targets" facility whereby you can see which are the 'easiest'
missing species from any given list. Moreover, we're always on the lookout for
feedback and new ideas.
Of course, keeping lists is not to everyone's tastes. Moreover, BUBO Listing is
not a scientific bird survey tool (for this, see the excellent BirdTrack at
www.bto.org/birdtrack). However, if you do enjoy listing as a fun part of your
birding, then check out BUBO Listing!
Best wishes
Andy Musgrove and Mike Prince

LESVOSBIRDING.COM
Announcing a new website dedicated to birding on Lesvos –
www.lesvosbirding.com.
I've developed a blog-based website for anyone interesting in birding
on the Greek island of Lesvos.
The site contains –
- species lists (birds, dragonflies, etc)
- an extensive trip report section
- a site guide
- more basic tourist info on the island - where to stay, where to
eat, etc
- links to many other more general Lesvos websites etc
The site is in its early stages and I would welcome feedback.
If you have a trip report on the web and it is not listed and linked
to from my site, then please send me the URL and I will add it.
If the site proves successful I might consider opening it up for
others to contribute to, especially for posting news direct to the
site when birding on the island. Lets see!
Cheers

Hello all,
SUN 19 AUG 07
Cool, showers, breezy.
3 Redstart, 4 Spotted Flycatcher, 1 very early Goosander (redhead), 2
Raven, 1 Kestrel, 2 Kingfisher, 31 Sand Martin, 125 House Martin, 2
Red-Legged Partridge, just 1 Blackcap and no Willow Warbler found,
about 20 Chiffchaff.
Nash End: not much.
THU 23 AUG 07
Warm, sunny, windy.
2 Tree Pipit, 2 Redstart, 11 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Lesser
Whitethroat, 4 Sand Martin, 2 Raven, 1 Kestrel, 1 Heron, 1 Tufted
Duck (unusual).
It was a bit like the "good old days" re autumn Spotted Flycatcher at
the Severn (with several also just north into Shrops).
Something like 14 consecutive years of autumn Redstart in the Borle
Brook area of the Severn.
It was only the second ever year that I've found autumn Tree Pipit
locally. They seem to be quiet and elusive at this time of year – so
they probably occur more often, especially given the strong breeding
population in the Wyre at nearby Buttonoak (Shrops).
Hopefully, more in a month or so.
