do I need a bottom rail on my new chain link fence for my Chihuahua?   Message List

Hello,

I’m going to have a 4 foot high chain link fence installed to enclose my backyard, this will give my Chihuahua and German Shepherd a secure place to play.  I’ve gotten three estimates, two recommend a bottom rail to protect my 6 pound Chihuahua (this will add at least $1,300 to a 4,500 to 6,000 estimates).  I had another estimate for $3,700 with a single rail at the top, and a wire instead of a rail placed around the bottom to protect the dogs.  My Chihuahua doesn’t dig, and I wouldn’t leave him outside and not have someone at home.  Is a bottom rail necessary?  Or can I circumvent by putting rocks/dirt at any dip areas.  I expect the chain link fence will come down to the ground.  I would appreciate input on this.  Thank you!
