I just got a new guinea pig (Zorro) he's three-week old and I have
never had such a young one before. Any tips or suggestions? Is there
anything that needs to be done differently than with an adult?

were living in the house in a small cage ,we felt sorry for them so we built
them a run outside ,and now we have 5 guinea pigs and 4 rabbits and a huge
run out in the garden ,and a whole shed as their bedding place,i really
enjoy the guinea pigs their names are gary, jet, abby, and two we just got

confident enough where i dont have to chase them about when i want to hold
them ,gary we have had for like 8 months and he is full grown, and the rest

Hello my friends..... Our club has a new website. I decided to break
down and make one. It is still in the building stages but it was
fun. I wanted to tell Elaine that some silver martins and black and
tans have finally made it to Alberta. A friend of mine has some.
They are gorgeous. I had only seen them in pictures before this fall.

Here is my website...... do take a look.
www.wildrosecavyclub.1hwy.com

Have a great day everyone............. Shi.

hiya all

sorry I'm not about much these day, just so much going on in between
coping with the rise in problems caused by an accident I had 2 years
ago. I hope everyone is ok and piggies too.
anyway I wouldl ike to inform you of a new website, its not mine,
although I did contribute some of the photos and articles to help the
webmaster out with some of the breeds.
It is the website of the 'Rare varieites Cavy Club' based in the UK,
it covers guide standard and unstandardised breeds photos and
articles and also a photo page with 'new' un reconised breeds people
are working on to get reconised, how ot get a new breed reconised and
slowly up the levels to a full standard breed, also a bit of history
on the RVCC club, plus a message board, which if you have a couple of
spare minutes please could you add your thoughts about the site,
after looking at it, ok their is one or two minor faults as with all
websites when first up and running even when they are produced by a
professional web publisher, let alone a retired aged cavy fancier, so
I think he has done very well with the info and photos sent to him
over the last few weeks geting it sorted and put on a web site, as he
had problems a few of the articles promised a few months back not
being sent in the end, and he had to ask again and still some
articles promised didn't get sent to him.
i hope you will try to leave a little message hopefully positive ;-)
if you visit
  anyway the site is http://www.geocities.com/rarecavies

elaine (~..~)

i will try to pop back and check in on old friends and their piggies
here (not old as in years, but old in how long I've known you ;-)
take care all)

Hi Eileen!!
Gidget seems to be doing a bit better - however if there's one more sign of
sickness, its off to the vet for her and Gollum!!!
I thought I should give you all a little update on the baby Gella...since
you guys helped me so much with her!
She's doing great, and I just posted a couple of new photos in my folder on
the group site for all to see her progress! There's one of Gella on her own
so you can all see how grown up she is now, and there's one with her Mom -
so that you can see how big she is! Keep in mind that Gidget is NOT a small
pig (she's never really lost the weight from pregnancy's, and she's a farily
large pig anyways)
So, now you can all go and look and see what a BEAUTIFUL baby girl piggie
that has survived, all because of your help!
She celebrated her 1st Birthday on April 28 of this year!
But she certainly develped a wee bit of an attitude from all the attention
that she got! She has a bit of a complex I think - she REFUSES to take food
that's given to her...she instead has to steal it from the mouth of her poor
mother! If you don't pay instant attention to her when you walk into the
room, you're in for a squeling...and you don't want to hear the noises if -
may the gods help you if you do - walk over the stairs with no food for her
in hand!

Everyone let me know what you think of my miricle baby!!

Nancy

hi

Nancy

I think a trip to the vet would be a good idea, as it is two of your
piggies acting strange, if it was just one then maybe it could be put
down to old age.

Is it very hot were you are, as my piggies lay around alot, as we
have been have some really hot weather, miracle for England!!

Anyway I just hope it is not a virus, if you can keep the two off
colour piggies away from your others, you must do this straight away
until you know what it is, make sure you feed, handle and clean your
other piggies before tending to the off colour ones. Are the piggies
kept outside, as inside if it is hot and not much air circulating,
viruses can spread really fast. Anyway keep your chin up, I know
difficult when worried, get to the vet and hopefully he/she will give
you some medicine if they need it and then if it is a virus, he/she
can get it under control. Not to worry you, but if you do not take
them to a vet and it turns out to be a virus, then all the others
will get it. A friend of mine, piggies got a virus she had around 40
in around 10 or so big hutches, anyway the whole stock had to be put
down, preggy ones, babies etc, as she had a few die, unfortunantly
it had gone beyond the vets control, and there was no way of knowing
which piggy had it etc, she could have paid something like £1,000 for
them all to have a course of anti-biotics, but the vet said if may
not cure the problem, so I don't want to worry you, just want to get
accross to you how important a trip to the vet would be.

Also "well done" again on raising that baby (lasy year I think) I
still think of that when you fed that little baby around the clock
from around 2 days ole (i think) orange and white I think it was. I
really amired you for that.

Take Care and hopefully you will have good news for use.
Eileen

Hey Guys! Sorry its been so long, and sorry to say that I only seem
to write in when there's something wrong...
But right now, I'm in desperate need of some advice!!!

My Male is acting really strange - kinda laying around alot more
than he used to - now this could be age - he is almost 5 years old -
but he's usually pretty active! He's fine when you pick him up, but
when he's in his cage, he's not moving much...tonight he's
developing a bit of a sneeze too... :o(
He's gaining and loosing weight a bit too - for a few days he's
bony, next he's plump and he usually is!!
I'm at a loss...
On to the next piggie:
My oldest female - the mommy, is acting much the same way - not
really paying attention to whats going on and the like... She seemed
to be perking up, and tonight she out of no where started making
churping sounds - exactly like a bird...not to be mistaken for the
usual happy churping from pigs! Her whole body started to shake, and
her heart was pounding - then it stopped, and she curled up in a
corner for a while, then was back to normal...???

I have no idea what it going on!!

The next piggie, unfortunatly died...and I'm just kinda looking for
an explanation...and perhaps help prevent it from happening again...
He was one that mine had almost 2 years ago - I had the little guy
for almost 5 months before I finally let him leave my care (i was
pretty attached to him) He went to what I thought was a good home,
however, turned out not to be so - I quickly removed him from that
home when I realised what was going on (he wasn't being cleaned,
wasn't getting veggies, dirty water, little to no food...) And got
him and AMAZING home...They had him since November, and they gave
him the best care a piggie could have. His owner called me on
wednesday night and said that he wasn't looking to great, and I told
him to take him to the vet the next day to check it out cause I was
out of town and couldn't do a whole lot from there - when he took
him the the vet, he said he had gas - when they brought him home, he
got diarrhea that kept getting worse...I know what diarrhea means in
piggies, so I told them to call the vet again - he perscribed the
appropriate stuff for him, and they dropped the little guy off to me
for the night so i could take care of him, as they both work
overnights...
When I got him, he was pretty out of it, but we managed to get some
mushed food, water, and his prescription into him - but he kept
getting worse - he died 8:00 am on Friday morning :o(
What causes this to happen? What can be done to prevent it??
There were no environment or food changes, and he was fine until
wednesday afternoon....

I'm SOOO sorry this is so long - I just REALLY need some help!!!

Hopefully someone out there can help!!!

Thanx in advance,
Nancy

Hi Heather!

It is perfectly OK to give your piggies watermelon, or any other
type of fruit for that matter. As long as the seeds have been
removed from the watermelon (or other fruit), it should not be a
problem. My piggies LOVE fruit, and get some almost every day. If
you have at least two piggies, then give them a slice of melon, or
an apple, orange, pear, or a small cluster of grapes. Then watch
them go for it!

Hope this helps you, and good luck with your piggies.

Hi
I was wondering if it ok to give my piggies watermelon.
I gave them a tiny bit to see if they liked it and they did but I
didn't know if it was good for them so I won't let them have a bigger
piece until I know for sure.
so if anyone knows and could help me would be greatly appreciated.

Just thought i'd write a quick one. I haven't had much time with my
new job and all...
I'm glad to see your doing better Eileen.
It's great to hear about your babies. You have your hands full too
I see...
Well mine are doing great and still I think i'm going to be keeping
most of them. I have a home for one, but GOOD homes are hard to
find. You want to make really sure that they are going to be well
taken care of.
Well, take care and i'll check in again soon.

Jennifer, Missus, Mistah, Bella, Bubba, and other little still
nameless babies... :)

Hi

Piggies doing fine, two had lost a lot of fur on their back, two
females who had just given birth, I gave them some Ivomec and now
they are doing great, the fur is growing back lovely. I am so
pleased as one of them had lost fur on her back, she had scabs and
also had lost most of the fur all around her back end. She had five
babies, one made it, which I am surprised about considing the state
of her (mum) her name is Bubbles and she is a tri abby, well she is
onlt one years old and she has now retired. I thought I would lose
her, but she is doing great and the first out for the food, when she
hears me coming.

Hi all

Sorry i have not been in lately. My 2 piggies are doing fine.
Yesterday we got in a car wreck. The person in front of us didn't
have any brake lights on and just stopped in front of us. We hit
that car and that car went and totalled another car. Luckily
nobody was hurt. Of course our car had no scratches not even a
minor dent. I hope everyone is ok with this nasty weather in the
midwest (USA).

Hi to who ever reads this.

I have some babies ready to go to their new homes.
my tri-smooth female whos white/black and cream had three girls, they
cam out all different. one is a himalayan, one is a rex, mainly
cream with a splash of colour and one is a brown/grey agouti. The
father was a dalmation who had a rex parent. Such a mixture, its fun
when that happens, you don't know what to expect. I am trying to
work out where the himi came from. I use to have himalayans, but
they were not related to the father and the mother came from a friend
who also has no himis, maybe it came from way back, interesting
anyway.

It would be nice to see someone in here.

Take Care

Hello everyone. Been a long time since I posted, but it seems there's
a little activity lately.

I have a small problem. I still have 3 piggies. Spark, Twinkle and
Icicle. I am soon going to be moving and I don't think the place I am
moving allows pets of any kind.

Does anyone have any advice for me on where I can find homes if need
be? I really don't want to give them away, but I really need to move.
I am tired of my place.

I had planned to give two away even before moving (Twinkle and
Icicle). Spark would be hard to part with because he's very social.
The other two are just basically eating machines.

Any help would be great
David

Hey again,
Of course I wouldn't mind if our pic was used on the page!!!
I told everyone and they were running around wheeking... :)
Everyone is doing fine, and even the little one with the bum foot is
doing just great. I don't know if he got it stuck or something, but
he wasn't using it and walking on the side.
These little guys eat like real little piggies though!! Oh my gosh,
i'm running out of food every 2 days!!
Well, i'll keep everyone posted about our new developments...
Oops!! And guess what... i'm keeping 3 of them. I knew that would
happen.. <smile>

These are such adorable little babies, I hope you don't mind me using
your picture for the group photo. I use to change the photo quiet a
lot, but then my baby number four came a long and the group got
pushed a side a little. Anyway I am still very ill, but had to call
in to see the babies.
take care

Sorry to hear that your not feeling well Eileen. I hope you get
better soon...
Thanks for all your help about the babies and they are doing just
great!!
I had one that wasn't walking on one of his front paws, and I was
concerned that he would stay that way. But glad to say that he's
doing just fine now and using it just like the other 3.. :)
I'll post some pics here today in the picture files if anyone is
interested in seeing my little family.
Thanks everyone,
Jennifer and the "Crew"

That's soo sad. : ( If one is getting milk from mommy, I
supplement mine with puppy formula...you know the kind that
you add water to? I then ge a kitten bottle with the smallest tit or
buy it seperately and supplement that way. Though when you do
that you have to get up every 2 hours to feed it. I've had a very
high succes rate witth this, though it is demanding.

Logan

PS Of cours I was right bout when they usually give birth, I'm
always right ; )

Hi Congrats on the babies "5"

Now as for feeding, Guineas do make excellent mums, however if there
is any weak ones out of the five, sometimes they can get poushed out
by the litter mates, however you can make up a little feed for them -
the receipe is on many guinea web sites, I will look up for you if
you like. I normally use condensed milk diluted down with water and
then soak a little bread in it. I have never seen the babies eat it,
I know the older ones seem to like it. This does need changing quite
a lot, as they get it messed up. Just a little is needed, but warm
the milk mixure very slightly, store the rest in the fridge, then
warm up just a little each time you change the feed, if you know what
I mean. Anyway it might help. I had two litters myself, well my
piggies did. The first was born on 6th April, she had three and they
are doing really well. The other had hers yesterday morning, she had
four, two did not make it, one looked about half the size of the
others, anyway the two remaining looked pretty weak, anyway one of
the the left looked so weak today (I had to end its suffering) one of
the hardest things I have had to do, but I could not let it suffer.
The last remaining one, seems to be doing well, now he has mum all to
himself he has a good chance, I have seen her nursing him loads. So
hopefully he will be ok. Anyway take care and enjoy the babies.
Thanks
Eileen
