Conner's Animal Cruelty

View Current Signatures - Sign the Petition

---------------------------------

To: Clinton County Attorney, Mike Wolf
To: The Honorable Mike Wolf, Clinton County Prosecutor
Dear Prosecutor Wolf:

Robin Conner was arrested and charged with four counts of Animal Cruelty. Ms.
Conner has been charged with Cruelty due to 4 Dead young dogs found in Tote
boxes on her property. A search warrant served by the County Sheriff turned up 3
more dead dogs in tote boxes as well as a severely emaciated Bulldog on her
deck, no shelter in freezing temperatures, a thin Saint Bernard on her porch,
two Old English Sheepdogs, extremely thin in dire need of Veterinary care. A
Cockatoo , Cockatiel, and Amazon Parrot were also removed from the Conner
property. A baby PotBelly pig without water or food and two cats were also
removed from the property. Autopsy results on the dead animals showed the dogs
died of starvation. This heinous act occurred from October through January ,
2004. One can only imagine the severe pain and suffering the animals endured.

A hearing was held to decide if Robin Conner could reclaim her survivng animals.
The Judge's decision to return some of the animals was extremely disappointing.
The Amazon Parrot, Ms. Conner had obtained by falsely representing herself as
President of the Parrot club, a Cat, Robin falsely stated was her sister's, and
the Cockatiel were all returned to Ms. Conner's custody. The remaining animals
were documented to be in extremely poor physical condition and left in the care
of Humane Officials.

Unfortunately, Ms. Conner is not currently incarcercated, having posted bail. As
the County Attorney, it is now your responsibility and moral obligation to
prosecute Robin Conner to the fullest extent of the law for her brutal crimes.
As you are well aware, severe forms of animal cruelty, including the torture of
an animal, is a crime punishable by large fines and, more importantly,
imprisonment .

We, the undersigned, urge you to present the charges against Robin Conner
insisting on the maximum amount of imprisonment. Likewise, we ask that you not
accept any plea bargain that does not include a guilty plea for each of the
seven counts of animal cruelty to account for the dead dogs and include a count
for every mistreated animal that was in her custody which adds seven additional
counts of cruelty for the survivng animals. On behalf of the many animals that
have suffered and died in Ms. Conner's custody, we must insist that Ms. Conner
be banned from ever again owning animals. Since the hearing date, Ms. Conner has
obtained more animals. She currently has obtained an Old English Sheepdog puppy.

Please be reminded of testimony that Robin Conner placed a Saint Bernard in a
cage in the back of a truck, sub-zero weather, and power washed him at a car
wash. He was then placed outside to die. He froze to death. Testimony concerning
another Bulldog, Bleach poured on it's face and body until the dog seizured and
died. Testimony that Robin Conner refused to feed the animals she decided she
did not like. The Beagles, the Setters, the deaf Old English Sheepdog, the
Boston Terrier, so many animals. Testimony that Robin Conner used false
pretenses to obtain these animals. Please listen to the many people that have
come forward about the birds, dogs and cats that have all perished while in
Robin Conner's custody.

These animals could not defend themselves against Robin Conner, nor can they now
seek justice. A civilized society can not allow such brutality to go unpunished.
Thus, please do all in your power to ensure that Robin Conner is prosecuted and
sentenced to the maximum terms allowed by law.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

Subject: CALL PRADA NOW! NO SEAL SKIN FUR!

Hi All,

This past Saturday, May 1, activists staged a very successful protest
outside Prada's 5th Ave store in Manhattan. It's crucial that we now
follow up with lots of phone calls (or letters)!

Whether or not you live in Manhattan or shop at Prada, please call (or
write)

Katherine Ross, V.P. of Communications, Prada

610 W. 52nd St., New York, NY 10019 Tel: (212) 307-9300

to politely, yet firmly, let her know that you will not shop at Prada,
and that you will encourage others to do the same, while Prada makes
garments from fur, but especially from the fur of baby seals that are
being massacred in the Canadian seal hunt.

Thank you!

Mary

Canadian Seal Slaughter

SENATORS LUGAR AND BIDEN SIGN ON TO RESOLUTION CALLING ON CANADA TO END
COMMERCIAL SEAL HUNT

Senate Foreign Relations Committee to Recommend
Resolution to Full Senate

WASHINGTON-A U.S. Senate resolution urging the
Canadian government to end the needless slaughter of harp and hooded seals has
gained the support and co-sponsorship of Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) and
Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE). "We applaud the Senate Foreign Relations Committee
and its leaders for unequivocally condemning the Canadian seal hunt," said Dr.
John Grandy, senior vice president of wildlife programs for The Humane Society
of the United States (The HSUS). "Greenpeace USA and International Fund for
Animal Welfare (IFAW) join us in thanking the
Committee because there is simply no justification for Canada's killing of harp
seals. By putting the
Committee on record against the unconscionable and needless slaughter of seals
for fur, they have
conveyed to the Canadian Prime Minister and the rest of the world that the
practice must be ended once and for all."

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee today favorably reported the resolution
for action by the full Senate. The resolution made the following points:

**Last year, the Canadian government announced that it would permit the clubbing
and shooting of close to one million baby harp seals over the next three years,
the highest quota for seal killing in Canada's history.

**This year's hunt has already resulted in the deaths of over 320,000 seals -
mostly between the ages of twelve days and three months old.

**The Canadian seal hunt is the largest commercial
kill of marine mammals in the world.

**A 2001 study by an independent team of veterinarians found that up to 42
percent of the seals examined were likely skinned while alive and conscious.

**The world community is condemning the hunt, with
initiatives to ban seal products under consideration
in Italy and Belgium.

Greenpeace USA has joined with other animal protection organizations of the
world to say that this abhorrent practice has to end. "If the Canadian
government continues to promote this horrific and needless slaughter as the only
way it knows to help the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, then the
imagination and leadership abilities of Canada's leaders are in as great
jeopardy as the seals themselves," said John Passacantando, executive director,
Greenpeace USA.

The resolution was originally introduced by Senator
Carl Levin (D-MI) and strongly supported by Susan
Collins (R-ME). The Humane Society of the United
States along with other animal welfare and
conservation groups have actively campaigned against the Canadian seal hunt,
running full page
advertisements in major U.S. newspapers and
encouraging their members to think twice about
traveling to Canada.

"Canada's commercial seal hunt is a cruel and outmoded industry with no place in
the 21st century," said Fred O'Regan, President of IFAW. "Today's bipartisan
action in the United States Senate is another step toward a better world for
animals and people."

Aside from the inherent cruelty associated with the
clubbing and shooting of the seals, the resolution
also pointed to the inability of the Canadian
government to enforce the quota, citing the fact that
many of the seals shot during the hunt escape beneath the ice and die later
after suffering. These "struck and lost" animals are not counted against the
quota, causing significant inaccuracies in the official kill statistics.
Finally, the resolution refuted several
arguments made by the Canadian government and sealing lobby in favor of the
hunt, including their arguments that it is vital to the economy of Atlantic
Canada and will help restore depleted cod stocks.

The Humane Society of the United States is the
nation's largest animal protection organization with
more than eight million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice
for animals, with active programs in companion animals and equine protection,
wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research and farm animals and
sustainable agriculture. The HSUS protects all animals through legislation,
litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and fieldwork. The non-profit
organization, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2004, is based in
Washington, DC and has 10 regional offices across the country. On the web

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MOTHER'S DAY PET STORE PROTESTS PLANNED STATEWIDE

On Saturday, May 8, 2004 animal lovers statewide will be gathering in front of
pet stores that sell puppies to draw attention to the ugly reality that is the
lives of the mothers of pet store puppies.

Hundreds of thousands of puppies are bred on commercial breeding facilities
known as "puppy mills" for sale in retail pet stores. Puppy mill puppies often
suffer health and behavioral problems because of their poor breeding, lack of
socialization and unsanitary mill conditions. These puppies are sold by pet
stores to unsuspecting consumers that get their wallets lightened and their
hearts broken when their new puppy gets deathly ill or develops genetic defects
that require expensive veterinary treatment, treatment that pet stores routinely
refuse to pay for in spite of legal requirements to the contrary.

One puppy mill victim is Karen Valente, whose son went to Hollywood, Florida's
Puppy Palace and purchased a yellow Labrador Retriever " Mickey" as a mother's
day present for her two years ago. After a few months, Mickey began limping, and
a veterinary examination revealed that Mickey suffers from elbow dysplasia, hip
dysplasia, enamel hypoplasia and an impacted canine tooth. "My vet says that
this puppy is a genetic mess." says Valente, who has already spent thousands of
dollars on surgery for Mickey, with more surgeries to come. Valente is one of
many consumers that have sued Puppy Palace owner Judy Norford for fraud and
deceptive and unconscionable business practices.

By far the most abused but least visible victims of the "purebred" puppy
industry are the parents of pet store puppies. Females are bred the first time
they come into season and every time thereafter. They are not anyone pets. Most
puppy mill breeding stock have never even walked on grass because they live in
wire cages their whole lives. They do not have toys to play with, they do not
have beds to sleep in. They are never walked, or petted, or groomed. They often
do not have shelter from extreme temperatures, and they lack basic veterinary
care for their entire miserable lives.

For the mothers of pet store pups, Mother's Day will be as miserable as every
other day until people stop creating a market for her offspring by buying from
pet stores. According to Marcy LaHart, the West Palm Beach attorney representing
Valente and many other pet store victims, "Purchasing a puppy from a pet store
supports a cruel industry that churns out pedigreed puppies like factories turn
out widgets. While kind-hearted people are often tempted to "rescue" the poor
pet-shop puppies, what they are inadvertently doing is giving economic incentive
to the inherently cruel system that created them. If anyone deserves sympathy,
it is the mothers and fathers of those pet store puppies that will suffer in
cramped cages for their entire miserable lives, with no one to rescue them."

Killing Of Florida Racing Dogs Widespread

BAY MINETTE, Ala. -- Robert Leroy Rhodes was known all over Florida for
killing greyhounds for $10 apiece if they were too old or ill to race,
investigators testified.

Bryan Wall and Jim Barnes, investigators for the Florida Division of
Pari-Mutuel Wagering, testified at a hearing Thursday that dog kennel owners
and trainers sent greyhounds to Rhodes' farm in Lillian, where Rhodes shot
the dogs through the head with a .22-caliber rifle.

Barnes testified that dog owners found the service attractive because the
$10-per-animal cost was about half what a veterinarian would charge to
euthanize the dogs.

Baldwin County Sheriff's Capt. Huey "Hoss" Mack Jr. testified that Rhodes
admitted to killing between 2,000 and 3,000 greyhounds over a 40-year
period.

"This case shows what was going on in the greyhound-racing industry in
Florida," Baldwin District Attorney David Whetstone said after the hearing.
"It opens up the eyes to how sinister it was."

Thursday's hearing dealt with John Wilson Smith, one of four dog owners or
trainers in Florida charged under Alabama's animal cruelty law. Smith's
attorney, Deidre Lee, asked Baldwin County Circuit Judge Robert Wilters to
dismiss the case.

Lee said almost all of the evidence against her client comes from statements
investigators obtained from Rhodes, who died last year, and co-defendant
Clarence Patterson, whom authorities have been unable to locate.

Baldwin authorities are seeking to prosecute two others for paying Rhodes to
kill washed-up greyhounds -- Ursula O'Donnell and Paul Discolo Jr. Their
attorneys have made similar motions to dismiss the charges.

Cow cut, drained in Arborg

Mutilation mystifies

By NATALIE PONA, STAFF REPORTER

An Arborg cattle farmer made a horrific discovery Monday when he found the
partially skinned carcass of one of his animals that was missing its tongue and
apparently drained of its blood. "The whole thing has turned out to be more
sinister than I thought," said Yvonne, a neighbour, who examined the mutilated
animal. She asked not to have her last name used to protect her family.

"What sort of weirdos have we got travelling in our neighbourhood?"

Gordon, who would only allow The Sun to print his first name, said he discovered
the carcass on his farm Monday afternoon.

"I don't really want to speculate on what happened. I know what I saw," he said,
adding he is still shaken up by the find.

Arborg is 100 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

COW MUTILATIONS

The mutilation happened Saturday or Sunday night, Gordon said. No one heard
anything.

He's heard of several cow mutilations in the area over the past few years,
Gordon said.

He called the RCMP, reporting that the animal had been attacked by a predator.
He has since changed his mind about the cause.

"It was definitely a sharp object used," he said.

Arborg RCMP Cpl. Glenn Syme said he has never investigated an instance of cattle
mutilation. The RCMP did take a call this week about a cow being attacked by a
predator, likely from Gordon.

SKIN PULLED FROM FACE

The animal was found with an incision under its chin. The skin had been pulled
from the face, exposing the teeth.

"It's not the gore, we've seen that before, it's the evil behind it," Yvonne
said.

The tip of the animal's tongue, cut from its root, was placed in the mouth, she
said.

"There's not a drop of blood in that animal. The only way you can drain an
animal of blood is (to cut into it) with the heart still pumping," Yvonne said.

The cuts were very precise, as if made by a surgeon, she said.

"You don't know who you're dealing with ... the average wild and woolly
neighbourhood brat wouldn't be capable of doing it," she said.

Gordon and Yvonne called Fern Belzil, an Alberta-based investigator of
unexplained deaths who has been studying cow mutilations for eight years, for
help.

Belzil has studied 100 cases, two-thirds of which remain unexplained.

"I'm not saying it's aliens ... a lot points towards aliens but there is no
proof," he said.

Belzil said he has never encountered any evidence pointing to who or what is
killing cows.

"It's a real mystery," he said.

Global Day of Action Against Procter & Gamble..... Saturday, May 22nd

As World Week for Animals in Laboratories wraps up, we are working to continue
exposing the horrific practices of animal testing. Global Day of Action Against
Procter & Gamble is Saturday, May 22nd and marks the 9th Annual Global Boycott
of P&G! This international event is coordinated internationally by In Defense of
Animals and Uncaged Campaigns to gather activists and concerned citizens across
the world to speak out against P&G's unnecessary animal tests.

As the date draws nearer, and as P&G continues to mislead consumers about its
animal-testing practices, it becomes more and more urgent for IDA to reach as
many active, dedicated individuals as possible with correct information about
P&G and the truth about their continued tests on animals.

Each year, thousands of animals die in Procter & Gamble

laboratories- the victims of painful, archaic and entirely unnecessary product
tests. Caustic chemicals are forced into the eyes of rabbits and applied to
animals' shaved and raw skin.

Laboratory workers place the animals in restraining devices so they cannot
struggle while the workers apply the chemicals, which burn into the animals'
eyes and skin. P&G "scientists" do not sedate the animals or give them pain
killers.

Animals sometimes break their necks or backs attempting to escape the pain.
Those that survive are used in yet additional painful tests ... until they are
finally killed. The victims include rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets and
other animals.

P&G refuses to stop testing its products on animals, despite the fact that these
tests are not required by any law, and despite the fact that more reliable and
humane alternatives do exist. P&G also lobbied against the European Union's
efforts to ban animal tests, resulting in a delay in the ban taking effect.

These animals need your help! Get involved! Organize an action in your city
against P&G. Your help will make a difference.

IDA has great materials urging consumers "Don't Buy The Lie" P&G continues to
tell about its continued use of animals in testing and research. View the
complete list of new "Don't Buy The Lie" products at
http://www.pandgkills.com/you/merch.html .

To get the word out to as many people as possible, we suggest leafleting outside
a centrally located supermarket stocking lots of P&G products. Protesters can
also collect P&G products from friends and neighbors and return them, demanding
a refund because of P&G's animal-testing policy. This makes for a potential
media story as well, so let local newspapers and television and radio stations
know what you're up to. (For tips on making the news and working with the media,
visit http://www.idausa.org/ir/activist/makenews.html .

P&G is a multi-billion dollar corporation that, despite the development of more
advanced methodologies continues to blind, poison and kill animals unnecessarily
to test deodorants, laundry detergents and other products. More than 500 other
companies, including Estee Lauder, Amway, Revlon and The Body Shop, manufacture
and develop safe products without animal testing.

What you can do:

1. Buy only cruelty-free products. Get in the habit of checking the backs of
product labels to find out what company makes the product you are buying and
look for statements that the product was not tested on animals. Use our free
cruelty-free list

(http://www.pandgkills.com/boycott/cruelty_free.html) to find out which
companies do not test on animals, and buy only products from companies on that
list. Encourage your friends and family members to do the same.

2. Join the P&G boycott today. Refuse to buy P&G products. Help spread the word
to others. Circulate educational brochures, available through IDA, to your
family, friends, co-workers and others in your community. View the latest
brochures and bumper stickers here. Contact IDA for copies to distribute.View
our materials online at http://www.idausa.org/ir/recreading2.html .

3. Write letters to the editors of your local newspapers and weekly newspapers.
Find a listing of all U.S. newspapers at: www.usnpl.com . Make sure to let us
know if your letter gets printed. Below is a sample, though using your own words
is strongly encouraged. For tips on effective letter-writing, visit:
http://www.idausa.org/ir/activist/makenews.html#10.

4. Please write to Procter & Gamble CEO, A.G. Lafley, and let him know that
until P&G ends all testing, you will boycott their products.

1 Procter & Gamble Plaza
Cincinnati, OH 45202
1-800-543-1745

www.PG.com

5. Encourage students to ask their school cafeterias to no longer sell Procter &
Gamble products, such as Pringles or Sunny Delight, and to use only cruelty-free
cleaning products. Creating a petition for students to sign is a great approach.

6. Call and write any companies that currently test products on animals. Let
them know you will not purchase their products until they adopt corporate
policies against animal testing. Most companies have toll-free 800 numbers that
you can call at the company's expense!

7. Write to your congressional representatives and ask them to support any
legislation that would discourage companies from using animals for safety tests
or that calls for alternatives to animal testing. Visit our online action center
to look up your representatives at http://ga0.org/indefenseofanimals/home.html .

If you have any questions about the Procter & Gamble campaign, need help
planning an event, or want to register your event on our website, please email
us at alerts@....

Hi All,

This past Saturday, May 1, activists staged a very successful
protest outside Prada's 5th Ave store in Manhattan. It's crucial
that we now follow up with lots of phone calls (or letters)!

Whether or not you live in Manhattan or shop at Prada, please call
(or write)

Katherine Ross, V.P. of Communications, Prada

610 W. 52nd St., New York, NY 10019 Tel: (212) 307-9300

to politely, yet firmly, let her know that you will not shop at
Prada, and that you will encourage others to do the same, while
Prada makes garments from fur, but especially from the fur of baby
seals that are being massacred in the Canadian seal hunt.

Thank you!

Mary

This Bloody Business is Still Going On. Canadian seal hunters have

completing this season's main seal kill. They plan to start up again

Mayor: Gunfire Cheap, Humane Way To Deal With Strays

POSTED: 9:50 pm CDT May 6, 2004
UPDATED: 10:32 am CDT May 7, 2004

IBERIA, Mo. -- A small Missouri town has a tough answer to the question of stray
dogs.

Video
Watch KMBC's Report
Law enforcement in Iberia, Mo., shoots them in the head.

Missouri law allows law enforcement officers to euthanize some stray animals,
KMBC's Lara Moritz reported.

"According to state statute, if an animal is vicious, we can take and dispose of
it in any means available. And so, the means available is, we use a .22
(caliber) rifle," Iberia Mayor Bob Crawford said.

Crawford upholds the policy of shooting dogs whether they are vicious or not,
Moritz reported. He recently posted a letter stating that the stray dog problem
will be handled by the way he sees fit.

Crawford said he believes shooting an animal is "more humane" than other methods
of euthanasia because the animal "doesn't know what hit him."

Sharon Smith, who makes her living grooming animals, has saved dogs from being
shot in Iberia.

"He was going to be shot -- that's what the officer said -- he was going to
shoot him because he had nowhere to take him," Smith said. "I worry about the
dogs, the pets that I groom. What if they got loose and got picked up and got
shot? It would be horrible."

After a dog is picked up, officers take it to a vacant lot in the middle of town
to shoot it. The lot is directly behind Kim Downing's business on Main Street.
She says she can hear the gunshots, and she's against the policy.

But other residents support the way Iberia deals with stray animals.

"I think it's helped -- you don't see any dogs running the street now," resident
Larry Martin said. "The city police, they're just doing the best they can. If
they was out here shooting dogs just, shooting dogs for the fun of it, it'd be a
different story."

The mayor says the Iberia city budget is so small, it's not possible to build an
animal shelter. And there is no dog licensing in the city, which could help to
fund a shelter, Moritz reported. And not having a shelter makes it difficult for
the city to tell the difference between a stray dog and a pet.

the person or persons responsible for the mutilation of a cat found in Nanticoke
on May 2. The cat was found with profusely bleeding ears that authorities
believe had been partially and crudely amputated. The young male cat is being
cared for by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Luzerne
County in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The HSUS reward is offered in addition to a $1,600
fund the SPCA of Luzerne County has
established for this case.

According to Ed Gross, director of the SPCA of Luzerne County, the cat,
described as unusually friendly and affectionate, considering the pain he has
endured, may have been the victim of someone "practicing" the cropping
of ears before performing the procedure on dogs intended to fight. It is not
uncommon for illegal dog fighters to cut off the floppy ends of their dogs' ears
-- an attempt to prevent their adversaries' jaws from clamping down on a
sensitive, easily reached body part during a fight.

This incident, which occurred at the outset of Be Kind to Animals Week, is
another example of the cruelty that animals endure all too frequently at the
hands of violent people. Reliable data illustrate that those who harm animals
are often abusers of their fellow humans as well. "It is essential
that whoever mutilated this cat is found and held accountable," said Samantha
Mullen, program coordinator at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office of The HSUS.
"That person is dangerous and may need psychiatric treatment as well."

The SPCA of Luzerne County is vigorously pursuing this case. Anyone with
information about what happened to the cat is asked to please contact Ed Gross
at 570-825-4111.

The HSUS First Strike® program educates communities about the connection between
animal cruelty and human violence. The HSUS provides resources about the
connection and what people can do to combat animal cruelty.
The HSUS also offers rewards in cruelty cases across the country and works to
strengthen laws against animal cruelty. Go online to: www.hsus.org/firststrike
for more information.

The HSUS reminds cat owners that they can take steps to keep their cats safe:

Cats are exposed to many dangers outside the home. Any cat left to roam outdoors
will always be vulnerable to poisons, disease, animal attacks, animal cruelty,
or being hit by a vehicle. Cats can live longer, happier lives indoors or safely
confined while still enjoying the benefits of the outdoors, according to The
HSUS. A screened porch or enclosure, or sunny window perches can offer
stimulation while protecting cats from danger. Many toys can simulate outdoor
play, and
cats can also be trained to walk on a harness and leash. The HSUS offers tips
for cat owners who wish to bring their outdoor cat in at: www.SafeCats.org.

Feral cat colonies present a different set of issues for a community. For more
information on cat care and issues facing un-owned cats in diverse communities,
visit www.SafeCats.org.

Start a Neighborhood Watch for AnimalsT program in your community. Whether it
is incorporating animals into existing Neighborhood Crime Watch programs, or
starting a program from scratch, all you need to do is ask residents to be on
the lookout for signs that animals are being abused. The HSUS has free materials
available to get people started on a
Neighborhood Watch for Animals. Visit www.hsus.org/firststrike.

The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization with over eight
million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals,
with active programs in companion animals and equine protection, wildlife and
habitat protection, animals in research and farm
animals and sustainable agriculture. The HSUS protects all animals through
legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and fieldwork. The
non-profit organization, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2004, is based
in Washington, DC and has 10 regional offices across the
country. The HSUS Mid-Atlantic Regional Office serves Pennsylvania, New York,
Delaware and New Jersey. Visit www.hsus.org for more information.

The County Council members of Prince George County, Maryland, are hoping to
repeal a ban on Pit Bull and other breeds of dogs deemed vicious by their breed
alone. They are choosing to consider changing the ordinance currently
in place. It goes without saying that this will be a hotly contested issue
since proponents of both sides of the discussion are so polarized.

As we know, making an ordinance "dangerous dog" rather than "breed specific"
makes better sense and is easier to enforce. Cities and counties who have
chosen this route have better control over their dog population and the
conscientious pet owner runs less of a risk of losing their beloved family pet
because he or she is of a certain breed that has been banned where they live.
Unfortunately, many cities and counties are not on board with this philosophy
and have chosen to mandate ordinances that are "breed specific." Now, it appears
that the Council members of Prince George County, Maryland want to do what is
correct and repeal the existing ban on "breed specific"
dogs. Good for them! They are showing true grit!!!

We are being encouraged to write the Prince George County Council members and
express our appreciation for them taking a stance in changing their ban from
"breed specific" to "dangerous dog." Their actions in repealing the
current ban and replacing it with something more realistic and prudent proves
responsible leadership and good, fair judgment of dogs and their owners. This
will pave the way for heightened community awareness and involvement in what is
acceptable animal/owner behavior. It is a win-win
situation for the dogs, responsible pet owners, and Prince George County.

Also attached (thanks to Teila) is a news article on Denver fighting the
Colorado Legislature's ban on Pit Bulls. Denver wants to change the current
breed specific ban on Pit Bulls to a "dangerous dog" ban. This has all the
trappings of becoming a real floor fight between the City Council members and
the Colorado Legislature as to which group has jurisdiction. We'll want to keep
our eye on this, also, and lend our support to Denver to do the right thing in
lifting their current breed specified ban.

Please take a few minutes and write the Council members of Prince George, won't
you? Giving them our support will enable the Pit Bull dogs of Prince George
County, Maryland to be part of the community and not be an outcast.

The time has come to begin contacting councilpeople. Call, fax, send
letters or e-mail them to let them know they are doing the right thing by
repealing the breed ban and replacing it with dangerous dog language that even
better protects the public from all problems dogs
in the community.

-- It protect the public from ALL dangerous dogs
-- Costs will be better spent by not targeting dogs that are pets of innocent
dog owners -- millons of dollars have already been wasted rounding up and
killing benign dogs. -- Rather than decreasing public safety, as opponents try
to tell us, we know this bill is better because it targets the behavior, not
what a dog looks like.

Please note that the councilperson most in favor of keeping a repeal, Marilynn
Bland, does not have e-mail. In this county, the extra step of a faxed, signed
letter may be the best way to express yourself.
More information including a meeting, committee dates, hearing dates,
will all be forthcoming. If you would like to add anyone to this e-

OUR DOLPHINS ARE IN DANGER.... AGAIN!!!

Is Dolphin-Safe Tuna Really Dolphin-Safe?

Send your letter: http://www.care2.com/go/z/13739

The Bush Administration is trying to weaken the definition of the dolphin-safe
label on tuna cans. The proposed changes would allow tuna caught using the
harmful practice of chasing and setting nets on dolphins to be labeled
"dolphin-safe." This policy has the potential to devastate dolphin populations,
especially three dolphin populations in the Eastern Tropical Pacific -- the
northeastern offshore spotted, the eastern spinner, and the coastal spotted --
which have all seen their numbers plummet as a result of dolphin-deadly fishing
practices. THESE ARE THE SAME DOLPHINS WE PLAY WITH HERE IN COSTA RICA!!!!
These are dolphins that we personally know and love! YOUR SIGNATURE IS REALLY
NEEDED TO HELP STOP THIS MADNESS!

We need your help in convincing the Bush Administration to finally demonstrate
leadership on the issue of dolphin-safe tuna and other ocean wildlife protection
measures.

We cannot sit by passively as our dolphin-safe tuna label is rendered
meaningless and our ocean resources are destroyed by over-fishing.

Sign here: http://www.care2.com/go/z/13739 NOW!!!!

Please forward this to everyone you know. Your signature makes a difference!

During the filming of Manderlay the Danish director Lars von Trier arranged for
the killing of a donkey on the Swedish set with the excuse that it was
"necessary" and that the donkey was going to be slaughtered anyway. More details
at http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4866458/

Please ask the Swedish authorities why the donkey was going to be slaughered as
we do not think the Swedes are donkey meat consumers and why the Swedish laws do
not protect animals abused and murdered for "artistic" reasons. This is
happening all too often in that country. Thank you.

Kitten Killed by 6-year-old

A beloved pet lies still - silenced forever by a child.
NO UPDATES - we are waiting for the owner of the cat to feel comfortable
exhuming the body. To date she has had a difficult time doing this, which we
understand. But, as we explained to her, without the body, we have no case and
if we do not try and pursue this, this boy WILL do this again.
BACKGROUND: his may be one of the saddest cases we've ever faced. A six-year-old
boy appears to have beat a cat to death.
The owner contacted Pasado's Safe Haven when authorities said there was nothing
they could do about the killing, because the boy was only 6-years-old. Which is
not true. Under Washington State law, six years of age is when mandatory
psychiatric evaluation and treatment can be imposed.

The owner of the cat is heartbroken. She found the cat dead when she returned
home. She talked with the owner of a business next door to her house who saw the
young boy beating the cat and "hitting it with a stick". When the boy saw the
man, he apparently fled to his yard. When authorities were called, they spoke
with the business owner, who pointed out where the boy lived. When the officer
spoke with the boy's mother, he returned to the owner of the cat and told her
there was nothing that could be done due to his age. They would "refer" the case
to animal control. Animal control never called her. That's when she contacted
Pasado's Safe Haven.

Emails and/or phone calls need to be taken care of ASAP. Please take a moment to
help get justice for this poor puppy and protect other animals and humans from
this poor excuse of a human being. It is very important to be respectful and
polite when communicating.
Please crosspost.Thanks!

PRE-TRIAL HEARING: MAY 12th
Mark Enos allegedly told police he kicked and beat his small puppy because the
dog had bitten him on the hand, police reports said. Neighbors, who heard the
puppy yelping from about 150 feet away, called police.
The responding officer saw the man pin a small puppy between his heels and a
couch, kicking it rapidly with his heel about five times, police reports said.
He then got up and stomped on the puppy's back as it tried to crawl away.
We need to e-mail the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney and ask him (politely)
to please do whatever he can to use the Pasado Law and NOT allow this man to
ever own animals again if convicted.

Read newspaper story here.

DO NOT BE DEMANDING! Be professional and polite, please.

Talking Points:
--You are probably well aware of the link between animal cruelty and human
violence. Should this man be found guilty of first-degree animals cruelty, he
needs to know he cannot do this and get away with it.

--I understand that you have served on a Humane Society Board of Directors.
Please don't accept a plea that allows this man to escape justice.

--If guilty, this man is likely to re-offend. Please assure that he cannot own
animals in the future as part of any sentencing.

Dear Madam, dear Sirs,

As San Francisco Zoo cannot assure a humanely housing for its elephants, (no
facilities to provide them with environments that fulfil their most basic
needs), we beg you to release Tinkerbelle, Maybelle and Lulu from captivity.

Please let them spend the remainder of their natural lives at a sanctuary where
they can play in ponds and forage through hundreds of acres of lush vegetation!

Because, dear Madam, dear Sirs, elephant Calle did not die from tuberculosis,
she died of a unsuitable life in captivity….She could have been saved if she had
gone some years ago to a good sanctuary. And we all know that lack of exercise
and long hours standing on hard surfaces are major contributors to foot
infections and arthritis , which are the leading causes of death among captive
elephants.

It’s too late now for Calle, but you can save her companions! Please have mercy
on the remaining animals and let them go before they become ill as well and have
to be killed. Please close the elephant exhibit of San Francisco Zoo!

Please be compassionate, thank you.

Awaiting your good news,

Yours sincerely,

Judy's message: I read in the New York Times about how you objected to ads by
egg producers that effectively lie to consumers about their so-called humane
production methods, when they are NOT. I applaud you for your wisdom and
compassion!!! Thank you!!!

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The egg industry should stop advertising its products
as humane as long as it continues such practices as clipping hens' beaks and
depriving birds of food and water, according to a ruling issued Monday by the
Better Business Bureau.

The ruling comes from the bureau's New York-based National Advertising Review
Board, its highest authority on advertising issues. The board recommended that
the United Egg Producers either discontinue labeling eggs as ``animal care
certified,'' or significantly alter it to stop misleading consumers.

``It is unimaginable that consumers would consider treatment they find
'unacceptable' to be humane treatment,'' the ruling stated.

The ruling upheld a November finding by a lower panel of the Better Business
Bureau. Compliance with the recommendations are voluntary, but groups that
refuse to do so are referred to federal agencies like the Federal Trade
Commission or the Food and Drug Administration for further investigation.

``It happens so infrequently that if it does go to the FDA or the FTC, they will
scrutinize the case because it raises their red flags,'' said Bruce Hopewell,
director of the National Advertising Review Board.

Several telephone messages left with officials of the Atlanta-based United Egg
Producers, the U.S. egg industry's trade association, were not returned.

The group has said the logo, which adorns egg cartons in grocery stores, is
based on scientific standards developed by a group of independent experts.

Its official response to the ruling stated that the group is prepared ``to
increase the extent to which the substantive significance of the guidelines is
communicated to consumers.''

While the BBB found that the egg industry's standards have improved treatment of
hens, it's not to a level that most consumers would find humane.

Among the practices cited were forced molting, which is intentionally
withholding food and water to make birds lose weight; partial beak clipping,
without anesthesia, to prevent birds from pecking each other; and dense crowding
of hens in cages that don't allow them to flap their wings or turn around.

The ruling stems from a complaint by Compassion Over Killing, a small,
Washington, D.C.-based animal rights group that monitors treatment of animals in
by agricultural producers.

``I think that it's pretty clear that most consumers don't consider a cage that
doesn't let a chicken flap its wings as so-called 'animal care certified,'''
said Paul Shapiro, the organization's campaigns director.

Shapiro said he hoped the ruling would lead the egg industry to follow the lead
of European countries like Switzerland and Germany that have or soon will ban
chicken cages altogether in their egg industries.

He said he hoped the ruling would bolster his group's case in complaints filed
with the FTC and the FDA.

Hopewell said the BBB will follow up in several months to see if United Egg
Producers has discontinued the logo or made significant changes to its
advertising. If it doesn't, he said, the bureau will refer the case to the FTC
or the FDA, which could order the egg industry to stop the advertising and levy
fines.

Hopewell said the review board's rulings have a compliance rate of about 95
percent, and that it's considered a black mark against those who refuse. The
board is made up of professionals from the advertising industry itself.

Iowa ranks first among the U.S. states in egg production. In 2001, the state
produced 7.55 billion eggs from 37.8 million chickens for cash receipts of $241
million.

roadkill

GERMANTOWN, Wis. - It was a stench of decay that caused authorities to search an
apartment in suburban Milwaukee.

They found a residence crawling with life: About 200 creatures — including
alligators, scorpions and carnivorous beetles — formed a bizarre menagerie
kept alive by a woman who fed them roadkill.

“The smell was just unbelievable,” said William Mitchell, a state
conservation warden who found about 70 ducks cramped in a basement pen with
droppings covering the floor. “It was really stinking. ... It made my eyes
water.”

Neighbors had complained about the foul smell.

Animal carcasses were in a freezer, and decaying carcasses were in an adjacent
garage. Among the dead animals were raccoons, rabbits, opossums and squirrels.

Jamie Verburgt, the apartment resident, was given two state citations for
possessing game animals out of season, Mitchell said.

“She said they were car kills,” Mitchell said. “I warned her that it is
illegal to take dead animals off the side of a road. ... The dead animals were
used to feed the live animals, and some were given to flesh-eating beetles.”

Among the other live animals found were snakes, rats, turtles and toads.

The live animals were seized by the Washington County Humane Society, pending
investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Mitchell said federal wildlife officials plan to investigate those who sold
animals to Verburgt through the Internet.

“She intended to sell the animals to pet stores,” he said.

Verburgt’s boyfriend, John Walters, was prosecuted in 2000 for mistreatment of
exotic animals.

At that time, police found a female cougar, female leopard, silver-tailed fox,
monitor lizard, two caracals, a coatimundi, chinchilla and a reticulated python
in Walter’s apartment in Greenfield, another Milwaukee suburb.

Man found guilty of cruelty

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LEAKESVILLE, MISS. - A Leakesville man accused of putting a spotted fawn in a
pen with two Rottweilers was found guilty of animal cruelty in Greene County
Circuit Court.

James R. McCullough was charged in November 2003 after authorities received
information that McCullough was keeping a baby deer in the pen with the two
dogs.

McCullough was convicted Friday after testimony from several witnesses,
including Lucedale veterinarian Karl Smith.

"Both ears were chewed off all the way to the skull," Smith said.

Smith said the fawn was treated with antibiotics for several weeks, but a few
days after her bandages were removed she died. Smith said the cause of death was
head trauma.

McCullough denied putting the deer in the pen.

He testified that the deer was sick and he nursed it back to health. He said the
deer just hung around and jumped into the pen with the dogs on several
occasions.

Justice Court Judge Joe Beard sentenced McCullough to six months in jail, but
suspended most of the sentence. McCullough will serve 30 days.

He was fined $100 for possession of a spotted fawn and possession of a deer in
an enclosure and $1,000 on the animal cruelty charge.

Hi All,

Please click on the included blue link to have a postcard sent on your behalf
urging the American Cancer Society to stop having fundraisers that feature and
promote beef eating. In other words, that promote cancer!

Thank you,

Mary

Cancer Society Promotes Disease with Beef Fundraisers, Say Doctors

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is calling on the
American Cancer Society to put an end to its “Cattle Barons’ Ball” events –
beef-themed fundraisers promoting the very disease the cancer research and
prevention giant is committed to curing. The fundraisers feature Western and
cowboy themes, including “chuck wagons” loaded with beef and other meats. More
than 30 are held each year.

PCRM Nutrition Director Amy Joy Lanou, Ph.D., has written to local organizers of
the ACS-sponsored Cattle Barons events urging them to either cancel or find new
themes. As part of its campaign – “Cancer: It’s What’s for Dinner at the Cattle
Barons’ Ball” – PCRM has launched a nationwide e-mail write-in effort calling on
American Cancer Society CEO John Seffrin, Ph.D. and ACS chapters to call off or
re-theme these events.

An e-mail “postcard” can be sent to Dr. Seffrin by going to PCRM’s Web site:
www.AmericanCancerSocietyPromotesDisease.org/letter.html (Note: although this
page suggests that you edit the sample postcard to make it your own, you can
also just send it as it is.)

**Information on the link between cancer and meat consumption, PCRM’s e-mail
“postcard” urging the American Cancer Society to cancel or re-theme its Cattle
Barons’ Balls, and the dates, locations, and contact information on all upcoming
Cattle Barons’ Ball events can be found on PCRM’s Web site:

From: Dianne Aldan

I have been asked if I could help raise some funds for Hope's transport out of
Greece so she can live out her senior years at a Donkey Sanctuary in Spain.
Every dollar will help so any contribution, no matter how small, will be
graciously accepted. Thank you so much for considering this request to help
Hope.

   Donations for "HOPE" urgently needed

Hope gets her 9 inch hooves trimmed at last.

Hope is safe for now - but her future is uncertain.

Hope with Judy, one of her rescuers.

In January, The Ark managed by Marjorie Pandi of Corfu and Judy Quinn, a
volunteer rescued an old donkey who now goes by the name of "Hope". Due to
Marjorie's commitments with running the shelter itself and the fact that Judy is
moving to the centre of the island because of her job, daily care of Hope now
consists of her being tethered and given water & food. Her human contact is for
less than 5 minutes a day and this is not acceptable. Unfortunately there is
nowhere else for Hope to go on the island.

Hope was found tied to a tree, perilously close to a main road and on moving her
to a safer spot, they noticed the terrible condition of her feet - her hooves
were more than '9 inches' long and her right hoof is permanently deformed.

A week or so later they were driving down the main road when they saw the donkey
again and they rushed home to get some rope but by the time they returned, she
was gone! Off they went in search of the donkey and they found her heading
towards town. This time they were able to retreive her but, because she was
quite crippled with the long hooves, it was a very long & slow walk back to the
shelter.

Hope has since had her feet attended to by a local farrier but,
unfortunately, there is no one on the island of Corfu who can take Hope in and
care for her for the long term. Marjorie and Judy are therefore trying to raise
funds to cover the cost of sending her to Salonika so she can catch a transport
with other donkeys being transported to a new donkey sanctuary in Spain - but
they need 600 Euros (about $1,200) to cover the trip to meet up with the other
donkeys going to the new sanctuary.

It would be greatfully appreciated if you could make a donation towards Hope's
transport, securing her well-being for her remaining years at the sanctuary.

Please send your donation today! You can pay by cheque (payable to GAR), bank
draft/money order, Visa or through the PayPal link (a secure site) at
www.garcanada.bizland.com Cheques/bank drafts/money orders should be mailed
to my attention:
ATTEN: Mrs. Dianne Aldan
  614 - 25 The Esplanade
Toronto, Ontario M5E 1W5
with the notation - "Hope's Transport".

For those of you living in parts of Europe, if you wish to donate I can provide
you with an address so you can send your donation directly to Marjorie.

Marjorie and Judy and, most of all Hope, thank you for giving her the
opportunity to live out her remaining years in a safe and comfortable
environment in the company of other donkeys.
