  Alaska Wildlife Alliance is sponsoring a petition to prosecute Park
Myers and Jeffrey Peacock for their crimes of illegally killing a wolf
and two black bears in the Juneau area. The wolf was likely Romeo, a
wolf who had become a very valued member of the Juneau community. Based
on past cases involving wolf and bear poaching, it is likely that the
District Attorney Doug Gardner will consider accepting a plea bargain that will
result in Myers and Peacock paying a small fine and serving no jail time.
Sign the petition that calls for these poachers to be prosecuted to the fullest
extent of the law.

and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances……


Contemplating the words of the First Amendment to the US
Constitution, that imperfect yet powerful piece of parchment that ostensibly
bestows all humans in the US with a set of basic rights enshrined and protected
by the legal system, demands that we ask ourselves if we are going to continue
apathetically allowing corporations and plutocrats to wrest those rights from
us. Will we continue to stand idly by as C. Wright Mills’ “Power
Elite” reduces us to over-consumptive, indentured automatons, with no
voice and little choice but to devote our lives to the hollow, meaningless
pursuits of materialism, the bread and circuses they provide, and narcissistic
“fulfillment” via the wage and debt slavery that enables the perpetuation
of their obscene gluttony and condemns our souls to pecuniary bondage?


Green IS the New Red

No group has seen its First Amendment rights erode more
quickly and dramatically than those of us who are vegan and agitate for Animal
Rights and the Earth. In 2005 John Lewis, deputy assistant director of the FBI,
declared that, “The No. 1 domestic terrorism threat is the eco-terrorism,
animal-rights movement.” It has been a down-hill slide for us ever since,
with ever-increasing degrees of harassment, surveillance, persecution, arrest,
and imprisonment for the “crime” of defending the Earth and other
sentient beings and attempting to stop a holocaust that kills billions upon
billions of nonhuman animals annually.

Aside from the gross injustice of those who’ve lost
their freedom fighting for nonhuman animals and the Earth, consider the fact
that there is a strong component of spirituality to veganism which receives no
recognition or protection. The atheists and agnostics who practice vegan ethics
notwithstanding (and with no disrespect to them), many vegans revere and
respect other animals and Mother Earth to an extent that there is a high degree
of awe and even worship, indications that veganism is spiritual. Vegans also
make significant sacrifices in striving to eliminate animal-derived products
and sources of entertainment from their lives and face a high degree of
marginalization and hostility for their extension of compassion and basic
rights to nonhuman animals. Sacrifice is yet another component of spirituality.
Alternatively, being a mainstream Christian in the US requires nearly no
sacrifice and hollow lip service to the principles of their faith is the order
of the day for many who “practice” Christianity. Yet there is
nearly no end to the rights afforded “Christians” in the US.


As a relatively small group facing a great deal of hostility
and numerous structural barriers to practicing our spiritual beliefs, vegans
need (and are entitled to) the same Constitutional protections granted other
spiritual and religious groups in the US. Yet vegans aren’t even
guaranteed something as basic as a vegan diet if they become political
prisoners of a penal system that is allegedly premised on the Constitution.
Public schools are not required to provide vegan alternatives in their
cafeterias or curricula. Vegans are not protected from discrimination or hate
crimes. Why does one have to check one’s rights at the door when one
chooses to hold a reverence for nonhuman animals?

With the advent of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, even
those Animal Rights activists who engage in legal, above-ground activism face
the chilling possibility of federal “terrorism” charges if they are
found to have done $10,000.00 or more worth of damage to a business engaged in
an “animal enterprise.” Vaguely written by the animal exploitation
industry itself and rubber-stamped by a Congress that is complicit in the
murder of billions of nonhuman animals for human pleasure and convenience, the
AETA has yet to gain traction as law enforcement officials search for the
opportunity to apply it in such a way that they attain a conviction, thus
opening the flood-gates for widespread implementation of this grossly
Unconstitutional abomination. Targeting one group (AR activists) and affording
special protection to one industry (animal exploiters—who under the AETA
could technically claim $10,000.00 worth of economic damage was caused by
protesting, petitions, counter-propaganda campaigns, and other forms of
Constitutionally- protected activity) are clearly an obscene violations of the
Constitution and are further evidence of America’s downward spiral into
corporate fascism.


The Green Scare Has Camped out on my Doorstep

While I’ve written about certain aspects of it before,
sharing my own experience enables me to speak with some authority on the
impending eradication of the First Amendment rights of Animal Rights activists,
a circumstance that should alarm social justice activists of all stripes,
whether they agree with our position on Animal Rights or not.

As I’ve waged two consecutive intense campaigns against
nonhuman animal exploiters, one a county government (Johnson County, Kansas)
hell-bent on slaughtering a herd of deer when economically viable nonlethal
population
management alternatives existed, and the other a public university (the
University of Kansas Medical Center) bilking taxpayers of hundreds of millions
of dollars to conduct barbaric, unnecessary experiments on primates, law
enforcement and government officials have trampled my Constitutional rights in
an effort to silence my allies and me, to intimidate us, and to prevent us from
employing legal means to impede the torture and slaughter of innocents.

Our corporatist government has taken a keen interest in my
activism, presumably because I write prolifically and am widely read; publish a
well-known anti-capitalist, Animal Rights blog (Thomas Paine’s Corner);
am a press officer for NAALPO (an entity which acts as an aboveground media
outlet for the underground in the AR Movement but has no connection with, nor
means of identifying members of, the underground); have written that I
philosophically support the ALF’s destruction of the tools of
exploitation and freeing of the oppressed; and because I have written that I
philosophically support Jerry Vlasak’s position that counter-violence
from the Animal Rights Movement is probably inevitable and could be an
effective tactic–as no social justice movement has been successful
without it.

Employing Cointelpro-like tactics, the J Edgar Hoover crowd
has paid visits to numerous people in my life, including friends, co-workers,
activist allies, an ex wife, ex girlfriends, my sixteen year old son, and my
son’s girlfriend’s parents. They have branded me as a potential
terrorist via an alert that comes up when law enforcement runs me in their
system and, in that same alert, have informed law enforcement officers to USE
CAUTION when dealing with me, a person with no history of violence or felony
arrests.

While doing a home demonstration (which is a form of peaceful
residential picketing that amounts to a public shaming of an animal exploiter
by exposing their animal abuse to their neighbors) my allies and I were
interrupted and shut down by three law enforcement officers, despite the fact
that the city in which we were picketing had no ordinance against residential
picketing and no requirement for a permit. Upon threat of arrest for
challenging law enforcement’s claim that we had to “leave
Westwood,” my ally and I elected to leave peaceably as the rest of our
group had already left and the demonstration was clearly over. Litigation is on
the horizon.

While distributing fliers on the University of Kansas Medical
Center’s campus (they are the perpetrators of primate torture and the
ones who were cited by the USDA for the violation of 160 animal welfare laws)
one evening, I was stopped, searched and detained by four uniformed campus
police officers for twenty minutes and issued a criminal trespass warning,
meaning that if I set foot on KU Med’s campus again, I can be arrested
and charged with a misdemeanor carrying a potentially healthy fine and/or jail
time. Admittedly, the fliers were provocative, but they were a form of
expression protected by the First Amendment.

During the campaign to save the deer in Shawnee Mission Park
(aka Death Park), the director of the parks department sought and attained a
TRO (temporary restraining order) against me as a means of crippling my
relentless activism. This tactic is commonly employed by exploiters around the
country, as TRO’s (also known as orders of protection or stalking orders)
are easy to obtain and carry criminal penalties if one violates them. I wound
up on a year’s probation as a result of this TRO and an unintended violation
of the TRO on my part. Probation may not sound like much, but it puts an
activist with family and financial responsibilities in a bit of a precarious
position, as additional arrests can result in revocation of the probation and
twelve months in county.


A number of activists whom I know around the country have been
hit with TRO’s in this disturbing abuse of a law that was intended to
protect innocent individuals from potentially dangerous stalkers, not animal
exploiters from Animal Rights activists merely exercising their First Amendment
rights. As a result of these TRO’s, some of my activist allies have been
arrested and some have been jailed. Nearly all of them were restricted from
engaging in Constitutionally-protected forms of activism.


I’m currently fighting three TRO’s from
vivisectors (animal researchers) at the University of Kansas Medical Center who
attained the temporary orders of protection based on allegations that either
don’t rise to the level of stalking or are false. Both sides have procured
counsel and Judge Phelan of the Johnson County District Court has set aside an
entire day on November 30th for the hearing during which he’ll determine
whether or not to establish the orders as “permanent” (generally
meaning for one year). Most cases of this nature involve domestic abuse and are
over within about 5 minutes, but the complex and unusual nature of this
situation has necessitated an extensive hearing.

Tim Keck, the vivisectors’ attorney will be presenting
witnesses who will allegedly substantiate the claims of stalking that the three
animal exploiting vivisectors have leveled against me.


My attorney, David Bell of Wyrsch, Hobbs, and Mirakian, has
prepared a thorough and compelling legal brief, which asserts and substantiates
our argument that shackling activists with TRO’s is clearly a violation
of the First Amendment.

In a recent discussion with my former mentor, Dr. Steve Best,
he reminded me that while our Animal Rights philosophies are revolutionary in
nature and our ultimate goal is to forge a vegan society, our nascent movement
is in a pre-revolutionary stage. Therefore, our actions for the animals are a
means of resistance to the system rather than an effort to shatter the
prevailing paradigm and replace it. Given this reality, we need to fight tooth
and nail to protect and utilize the rights we are guaranteed under the
Constitution, the legal foundation of the extant system. As proxies for the
animals, who have no recognized rights in our legal system, our rights are
their rights. We need to fight for them!

As many of you know, I’ve put up a great deal resistance
over the last 16 months in myriad above-ground, grass roots, and creative ways.
However, this First Amendment challenge against the use of a TRO to silence a
social justice activist is one of my most significant acts of resistance. I
could easily consent to the TRO’s without admitting to the allegations of
stalking (which is what often happens in domestic abuse cases). Or I could have
put up a “plain vanilla” defense (either pro se or through my
attorney), but I suggested to David Bell that we mount a defense on First
Amendment grounds as a means of creating a blue-print (or setting a precedent)
for other activists so that we could stop the misuse of TRO’s to cripple
or halt our work on behalf of other sentients. David, a very fine attorney with
one of the most reputable criminal defense firms in Kansas City, was both
excited and intrigued and has readily accepted the challenge.


Going this route has been, and will continue to be, both
emotionally and financially demanding. However, the potential gain for other
activists and nonhuman animals is well worth it.


A question….

United States District Judge Fernando Gaitan Jr. issued a
ruling yesterday that declared Missouri’s 2006 law against protesting at
funerals to be unconstitutional because it violates constitutional rights to

How long are we progressives and radicals going to watch our
Constitutional rights vanish whilst federal, state, and local courts shield the
hateful, inflammatory, threatening, and sometimes violent activism of Fred
Phelps
and his fellow far right anti-abortionists, KKK, Aryan Nation, and Tea
Partiers?

the news format. I feel I need to share this info to avert future

the poisons people are using on their companions to combat fleas.







Ms.
  Burke [see her story below] mentions a natural alternative to the toxic
  flea meds on the market--garlic. She specifically suggests garlic pills
  but warns not
to give too much.




As
  someone who provides permanent sanctuary to abused, abandoned, special
needs and ferals, I have a lot of experience with newborns, elderly and
immune compromised
animals. Fleas are opportunistic and can cause severe allergic
reactions, anemia and death in sick animals.







A
  100% safe, effective way to rid an animal of fleas [healthy or sick] is
  to give them a GARLIC BATH. I use store-bought CRUSHED garlic right
from the jar. For
tiny infants I toss a few tablespoons of garlic into a bowl, add a
squirt of liquid dish soap and mix it together in warm water. I bathe
the animal thoroughly working the mixture into the coat. After using
another bowl to rinse the infant, I pat them dry, use
a blow-dryer set on warm, and my guys come out smelling faintly of
roasted garlic and NO MORE FLEAS. Applying the garlic topically, I
believe, is the most effective treatment and has several advantages. No
need to worry about the hassle of pills or possible
toxicity. And the results are immediate and lasting on any animal, any
age, any condition. "Dry" baths using garlic juice rubbed into the fur
also work, but a wet bath is superior and preferable.







I hope this helps all those vexed with a problem which has a safe, inexpensive
cure that's as close as your kitchen pantry.

  you have a flea comb ready to comb them into the water and treat their
head with garlic
as well.

Update and precautionary message

 

 


For those of you that are not aware, our then 8 yr. old, 13 pound
Papillon, Gizmo, went blind July 2009, from the application of the small dog
dose of Frontline
Plus. He was blind
in less than a week of the application, and we are told he should not even be
alive today.  Life
expectancy was a matter of a few months from onset, but our miracle boy has
fooled the doctors once again. 
He is still with us and healthy, except
for his blindness.  His retinas, nerves, muscles of the eyes are perfectly
normal and healthy, no
glaucoma, nor other disease of
the eye.  The problem lies in the back of the brain.  This medication caused
swelling in the back
of the brain, which is what caused the blindness. It started with severe back
pain, that
moved quickly up the back to the brain.  A matter of a few days - less than a
week.  
 
He has been diagnosed with GME, though this is not conclusive, as we opted not
to have the MRI done that would confirm it.

  gained some confidence and actually tries to run a bit outside.  I put
him back on the flexi leash when we will be in the yard where he can run
  and be safe if he bolts in a different direction.

ears up, loves to cuddle even more than before, if that is possible.  He
  is my snuggle bug!  He is
helping me so very much to try to overcome the pain of losing my 48 yrs.
  old son to ALS, this July!  God has been very good to us!

the last application was July 1,  2009... It took 15 months, including 3.5

Gizmo's back pain has finally been resolved as of July 2010 from Chiropractic
adjustments. YEAH!

According to a report by Nadia Ramdass of KENS 5, a television
station in San Antonio, Texas, a local man was arrested after abandoning a
trailer holding seven horses in San Antonio.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, Justin Harvey,
41, of Fort Scott was arrested Sept. 2 and charged with cruelty to livestock.
He later posted $5,000 bond.

The report said Harvey’s tractor trailer broke down along
Interstate 35 sometime on Sept. 1. The next morning a passerby noticed the
horses inside the trailer at a truck stop and called Animal Care Services and
911…..

Though
this country has admittedly entered into one of the darker moments in the
history of the amendment, the written guarantees of free expression and free
association are precisely that – written guarantees. Likewise, the matters
that
have shaped the amendment’s meaning over the years are interpretations with
the
authority to instruct the courts in what has predominantly been a broad
interpretation of the amendment’s protections. Though far too many of those in
positions of power would have it otherwise, the first amendment has been shaped
as strongly speech-protective, and just happens to be the most fundamental
principle of this country.

Rest
assured, however, that those wishing otherwise will fight tooth and nail to
make it so. Therefore, it is imperative that their efforts are met with
substantial – informed – opposition that continues to enforce the
judiciary’s
speech-protective holdings. Like any strength, if we do not flex our free

philosophy at the University of Texas, El Paso (UTEP), author and activist.

Topics like postmodernism, animal rights, the ecological
crisis, biotechnology, liberation politics, terrorism, mass media,

letters, call and e-mail the City Commissioners of South Fulton, TN to
immediately terminate the Mayor and Fire Chief.  Pet lovers wishing to

donating to the cause.

Donations are also being collected to fund placement of a full page ad
in the Union City Daily Messenger and The Obion County Weekly demanding
the immediate resignation of South Fulton Mayor David Crocker and Fire
Chief David Wilds for their role in allowing four beloved family pets to
  perish in a preventable house fire.  Funds raised above and beyond what

Tuesday placing new restrictions on Missouri dog breeders, could face
a challenge in the coming legislative session, lawmakers and others
said today.
 
Breeders and agricultural groups said they were formulating plans for
repealing or diluting the new law, and lawmakers in both legislative
chambers said they would support such measures.
 
“We will start working on that issue probably immediately,” said
Senator-elect Mike Parson, a Bolivar Republican whose district
includes more than 150 licensed breeding operations.
 
The new legislative session begins Jan. 5.
 
Prop B was sponsored by national animal rights groups to crack down on
“puppy mills” in the state — breeding operations that mistreat or
neglect animals.

                    Concentration Camps For Coyotes
And Foxes To

                       Become Legal and Regulated in
Indiana
 

In September, Florida’s Fish
and Wildlife Commission
  voted to ban permanently penning, the practice of training dogs to
chase and kill foxes and coyotes within enclosures. Several states
including NC
and SC are considering similar action
 
It appears that Indiana’s captive wildlife may not be so fortunate.
 
On Nov.16, the IN Natural Resources Commission
will address a proposal to establish regulations governing the one
penning operation in the state, which has been investigated by the DNR
and is expected to be licensed   According to Linnea
Petercheff, operations staff specialist with the In Div. Of Fish and
Wildlife, “Regulations will provide for the welfare of the coyote as
well as provide for fair chase and prevent new pens from opening.” 
Opponents of penning see it differently. They point to photos,
undercover videotapes and eyewitness accounts of captive
coyotes and foxes being released into pens, chased, caught and torn to
shreds by frenzied dogs
 
Providing
  live bait for this sport are the trappers, some of whom claim to have
been offered $200 for a live coyote while pelts may sell
for $12.   The trade in live bait is so lucrative that in 2008, a
cooperative seven-state raid of traffickers illegally shipping animals
across state lines to penning facilities resulted in 18
arrests,  Animals confiscated in the raid included 25 coyotes, 55
foxes, and 2 bobcats   Also found were 33 cardinals and a moonshine
still. This defies trappers’ claims that most animals survive the hunt.
 
Coyotes,
  foxes and raccoons are trapped alive; some injured in the process,
caged, trucked and sold to penning operators.  Traumatized,
they cower in cramped pens until released before a baying mob of
hounds.  Comments on trapper websites indicate that the animals are
sometimes wounded to ensure capture by the dogs.   Field
trials may last two and three days as the victims seek shelter in unfamiliar
territory;
 
The DNR’s stated concerns about penning include lack of fair chase, and
disease transmission between captive and wild
animals
  within enclosures which poses a significant threat to both the wild
populations and human beings.  It encourages illegal activities in
trafficking from other states. 
KY and OH wildlife officials have relayed concerns to Indiana’s
  DNR about the transportation
of wildlife across state lines. Other concerns include privatization and
  commercialism of wild animals, hunter ethics and public perception and
funding for enforcement.  Federal
funds
  from the Pittman-Robertson Act that support DNR activities are
ineligible for use in regulating and inspecting services and property of
  material value to individuals
or groups for commercial purposes.  This means that IN taxpayers will be
  picking up some of the tab for monitoring the running pens.  We will be
  paying for this small percent of IN Hoosiers who participate in this “blood
sport” to kill our wildlife.
 
At
  the March NRC meeting, the DNR was against the running pens operating
in IN.  Since then, for some reason, they have reversed their thinking.
The brutality of penning plus lack of intelligent wildlife practice
should ensure that dog-training
enclosures are outlawed throughout IN.
 
Public
  comments will be heard at the Nov. 16, 10a.m., NRC meeting to be held
at The Garrison at FT Harrison State Park. Although this is
a public meeting, the public does not have a right to be heard.  Who may
  comment is at the discretion of Mr. Poynter, chairman of the
Commission.

NORTH BEAVER TWP. - A North Beaver Township resident was found dead at his
tree stand Sunday morning, after his children became concerned because they
hadn't heard from him all weekend.
 
State police said William E. Henry, 67, of 283 McClain Road, got tangled up
in the stand when it apparently collapsed at Henry's hunting spot, in a
wooded area near Crum Road.
 
Police said Henry left his home to go bow hunting around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
When his children were unable to contact Henry, who lived alone, on Sunday
morning, they contacted police.
 
"His son knew where his hunting spot was, and they found his truck parked
near there around 9 a.m. (Sunday)," said Russell Noga, Lawrence County
coroner. "It didn't take long to find him."
 
Police said Henry's stand apparently slid from its spot, causing Henry to
become tangled in the stand's safety straps. Henry was found wedged between
the stand and the tree.
 
Noga said he hadn't yet ruled on the cause or manner of Henry's death, but
said it would likely be ruled an accidental asphyxiation.

Union County sheriff's detectives are investigating after a 59-year-old man
was shot by a hunting arrow and died north of La Grande, the county district
attorney's office reported.
 
Paul Rudd of La Grande was hunting Sunday morning with 53-year-old Mark
Omann, also of La Grande, when they spotted a branch-antlered bull elk,
according to District Attorney Timothy Thompson.
 
About 7:45 a.m., Omann's compound bow discharged, sending a broadhead arrow
into the back of Rudd's head. Omann called 9-1-1 and medics responded, but
Rudd died.

A 44-year-old Maryland man was fatally injured Monday when he apparently fell
from an elevated stand while hunting, the Maryland Natural Resources Police
said.
They said the death of Dennis Arthur Siler, of Port Deposit, which occurred in
the Elkton, Md. area, was the second fatal tree-stand hunting accident since the
Sept. 15 start of bow season for deer.

The Natural Resources Police said Siler had been hunting from a portable
climbing stand 30 feet high. -- Martin Weil

A bow hunter was mauled by a grizzly bear Friday just three and a half miles
from where a similar attack occurred five days earlier.
 
The Kalispell hunter, whose name was not immediately available, was with a
partner when the two surprised a female grizzly with two cubs in the Cascade
Creek area of the southern Gravelly Mountains.
 
The bear knocked the man down, bit him once in the inner-thigh then left the
area with her cubs, according to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks incident
report. The hunter was taken to the hospital in Dillon and treated for the
bite wound.
 
FWP says there is "no direct evidence that leads us to believe that this is
the same bear associated with the other mauling."
 
Region 3 Chief Warden Sam Sheppard said in the report that FWP has taken
several steps to warn people of the dangers of bow hunting in griz country.
Signs have been posted in the area of the attacks and FWP, and Forest
Service employees have contacted hunters personally, FWP says.
 
The report states that the additional human bear conflicts are predictable,
given conditions in this and other grizzly bear areas.
 
The agency recommends hunters carry pepper spray and hunt with a friend.

OMAHA, Neb. (Newsweak.com Exclusive) — Eighteen grade 5 students of Mavis
Beacon
Elementary School are undergoing counseling after a school field trip visit to a
beef slaughterhouse. The children reportedly were horrified to see how cows were
processed into beef. Some of the students vomited, and most cried.

Their teacher, Maxwell Barnes, faces disciplinary action for organizing the
school field trip. “I didn’t see anything wrong with it.” Barnes stated.
“Earlier this year we had a field trip to a chocolate factory. Kids have a
curiosity about where their food comes from. I don’t think there should be
anything wrong with showing them where meat comes from.”

The children were escorted through the facility from the loading bay, where
cattle enter the building, through to the stunning process where the animals
receive a pneumatic bolt to the brain, rendering them brain dead. “Some of the
kids started crying then.” said slaughterhouse foreman Dan Smith. “We told
them
it was all a natural part of how beef is made and ends up in yummy hamburgers,
but that didn’t seem to help much.”

The field trip then went awry after the brain dead animals were chained up by
their back legs and then cut into to be bled to death. “I saw one little boy
throw up.” Smith said. “And then after that there was screaming and running
and
all these other kids throwing up all over the place. We tried to calm them down
but it was out of control by then. These kids were just freaked out, they
didn’t
even finish the tour.”
