Hi friends-

On tonight's program at 10 pm, we will be showing 1984 footage (that's 25
years ago!) of Hans Ruesch,
speaking at UCLA at World Day for Lab Animals and being introduced by Bob
Barker. Hans Ruesch,
a medical historian, wrote several books against vivisection, among them:
"Slaughter of the Innocent"
and "1,000 Doctors (And Many More) Against Vivisection", a collection of
anti-vivisection statements
by doctors and scientists from around the world, and that was in 1989!
There are 3 segments on this
program, please don't miss it tonight. For more information about Hans
Ruesch visit _http://vivisectionfraud.com/_ (http://vivisectionfraud.com/) and
check out all the links. You can read and even download his entire book
"1,000 Doctors...."
at: _http://vivisectionfraud.com/1000docs.html_
(http://vivisectionfraud.com/1000docs.html) and also several videos that I
have aired on WYOU:
_http://vivisectionfraud.com/videos.html_
(http://vivisectionfraud.com/videos.html) Maybe 60 Minutes could be
contacted. He states in the video that they
had been trying to contact 60 Minutes since 1978 to cover this issue. Gee,
I wonder why they haven't .

Afterwards, on IDA Undercover TV at 11 pm, Part I of Chattel will be aired.

And there is a special bonus tonight from 8-10 pm on my friend Luciano's
show, "Freedom of Peace".
His sister-in-law, Dr Amy Vedder & her husband, Dr William Weber,
co-founders of the Mountain Gorilla Project
and authors of "In the Kingdom of Gorillas" and "Gorilla Mountain" willl
share their experiences.

So don't forget to tune in to WYOU, Cable 95, Digital 991 or
_www.wyou.org_ (http://www.wyou.org/) from 8-11:30 Thursday night.
And now 13 past episodes of Animals Have Rights are now accessible at:
_http://www.vimeo.com/animalrights/videos_
(http://www.vimeo.com/animalrights/videos)

I have a very special request of all of you. Madison's Mayor Dave proposed
a 50% funding cut for WYOU(that's $70,000!) in the city's 2010 Operating
Budget. That's one reason we just had a fall fund drive. Please, please
write to the newspapers and to your city alders and voice your support for our
station. How can they let a community access station, run by only 3 full
time staff and the rest volunteers, that still offers real in-depth
discussion of issues to be forever removed? We need to protect free speech now
more
than ever. Without
WYOU, the issue of animal experimentation would not have had a weekly
voice. No where else is the public
in Dane County provided with in-depth critiques and undercover videos
showing the dark reality of laboratory animals being used in research. We have
between 9,000-10,000 monkeys being experimented on at the UW and at
Covance, more than anywhere else in the country. It's time for our community to
examine the ethical, scientific, economic and safety implications of this
disturbing issue instead of simply avoiding it.
As long as we do nothing, this cruel and wasteful research will simply
continue.
Letters can be sent to the Capital Times (_tctvoice@..._

Milfred,

This article appeared in the Wall Street Journal on October 31, 2009. Please
send your comments to the Wall Street Journal at the address below. An article
on eating dogs is not a laughing matter and it is pathetic that they allowed
this article to be printed. There is even a recipe for "Stewed Dog" at the
bottom. It makes me sick!!!

Despite the fact that it's perfectly legal in 44 states, eating "man's best
friend" is as taboo as a man eating his best friend. Even the most enthusiastic
carnivores won't eat dogs. TV guy and sometimes cooker Gordon Ramsay can get
pretty macho with lambs and piglets when doing publicity for something he's
selling, but you'll never see a puppy peeking out of one of his pots. And though
he once said he'd electrocute his children if they became vegetarian, one can't
help but wonder what his response would be if they poached the family pooch.

Dogs are wonderful, and in many ways unique. But they are remarkably
unremarkable in their intellectual and experiential capacities. Pigs are every
bit as intelligent and feeling, by any sensible definition of the words. They
can't hop into the back of a Volvo, but they can fetch, run and play, be
mischievous and reciprocate affection. So why don't they get to curl up by the
fire? Why can't they at least be spared being tossed on the fire? Our taboo
against dog eating says something about dogs and a great deal about us.

r-would-you> Vote: Would you eat dog?

The French, who love their dogs, sometimes eat their horses.

The Spanish, who love their horses, sometimes eat their cows.

The Indians, who love their cows, sometimes eat their dogs.

While written in a much different context, George Orwell's words (from "Animal
Farm") apply here: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than
others."

So who's right? What might be the reasons to exclude canine from the menu? The
selective carnivore suggests:

Don't eat companion animals. But dogs aren't kept as companions in all of the
places they are eaten. And what about our petless neighbors? Would we have any
right to object if they had dog for dinner?

OK, then: Don't eat animals with significant mental capacities. If by
"significant mental capacities" we mean what a dog has, then good for the dog.
But such a definition would also include the pig, cow and chicken. And it would
exclude severely impaired humans.

Then: It's for good reason that the eternal taboos—don't fiddle with your
crap, kiss your sister, or eat your companions—are taboo. Evolutionarily
speaking, those things are bad for us. But dog eating isn't a taboo in many
places, and it isn't in any way bad for us. Properly cooked, dog meat poses no
greater health risks than any other meat.

Dog meat has been described as "gamey" "complex," "buttery" and "floral." And
there is a proud pedigree of eating it. Fourth-century tombs contain depictions
of dogs being slaughtered along with other food animals. It was a fundamental
enough habit to have informed language itself: the Sino-Korean character for
"fair and proper" (yeon) literally translates into "as cooked dog meat is
delicious." Hippocrates praised dog meat as a source of strength. Dakota Indians
enjoyed dog liver, and not so long ago Hawaiians ate dog brains and blood.
Captain Cook ate dog. Roald Amundsen famously ate his sled dogs. (Granted, he
was really hungry.) And dogs are still eaten to overcome bad luck in the
Philippines; as medicine in China and Korea; to enhance libido in Nigeria and in
numerous places, on every continent, because they taste good. For centuries, the
Chinese have raised special breeds of dogs, like the black-tongued chow, for
chow, and many European countries still have laws on the books regarding
postmortem examination of dogs intended for human consumption.

Of course, something having been done just about everywhere is no kind of
justification for doing it now. But unlike all farmed meat, which requires the
creation and maintenance of animals, dogs are practically begging to be eaten.
Three to four million dogs and cats are euthanized annually. The simple disposal
of these euthanized dogs is an enormous ecological and economic problem. But
eating those strays, those runaways, those not-quite-cute-enough-to-take and
not-quite-well-behaved-enough-to-keep dogs would be killing a flock of birds
with one stone and eating it, too.

In a sense it's what we're doing already. Rendering—the conversion of animal
protein unfit for human consumption into food for livestock and pets—allows
processing plants to transform useless dead dogs into productive members of the
food chain. In America, millions of dogs and cats euthanized in animal shelters
every year become the food for our food. So let's just eliminate this
inefficient and bizarre middle step.

This need not challenge our civility. We won't make them suffer any more than
necessary. While it's widely believed that adrenaline makes dog meat taste
better—hence the traditional methods of slaughter: hanging, boiling alive,
beating to death—we can all agree that if we're going to eat them, we should
kill them quickly and painlessly, right? For example, the traditional Hawaiian
means of holding the dog's nose shut—in order to conserve blood—must be
regarded (socially if not legally) as a no-no. Perhaps we could include dogs
under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. That doesn't say anything about how
they're treated during their lives, and isn't subject to any meaningful
oversight or enforcement, but surely we can rely on the industry to
"self-regulate," as we do with other eaten animals.

Few people sufficiently appreciate the colossal task of feeding a world of
billions of omnivores who demand meat with their potatoes. The inefficient use
of dogs—conveniently already in areas of high human population (take note,
local-food advocates)—should make any good ecologist blush. One could argue
that various "humane" groups are the worst hypocrites, spending enormous amounts
of money and energy in a futile attempt to reduce the number of unwanted dogs
while at the very same time propagating the irresponsible no-dog-for-dinner
taboo. If we let dogs be dogs, and breed without interference, we would create a
sustainable, local meat supply with low energy inputs that would put even the
most efficient grass-based farming to shame. For the ecologically-minded it's
time to admit that dog is realistic food for realistic environmentalists.

For those already convinced, here's a classic Filipino recipe I recently came
across. I haven't tried it myself, but sometimes you can read a recipe and just
know.

Stewed Dog, Wedding Style

First, kill a medium-sized dog, then burn off the fur over a hot fire. Carefully
remove the skin while still warm and set aside for later (may be used in other
recipes). Cut meat into 1" cubes. Marinate meat in mixture of vinegar,
peppercorn, salt, and garlic for 2 hours. Fry meat in oil using a large wok over
an open fire, then add onions and chopped pineapple and sauté until tender.
Pour in tomato sauce and boiling water, add green pepper, bay leaf, and Tabasco.
Cover and simmer over warm coals until meat is tender. Blend in purée of dog's
liver and cook for additional 5–7 minutes.

There is an overabundance of rational reasons to say no to factory-farmed meat:
It is the No. 1 cause of global warming, it systematically forces tens of
billions of animals to suffer in ways that would be illegal if they were dogs,
it is a decisive factor in the development of swine and avian flus, and so on.
And yet even most people who know these things still aren't inspired to order
something else on the menu. Why?

Food is not rational. Food is culture, habit, craving and identity. Responding
to factory farming calls for a capacity to care that dwells beyond information.
We know what we see on undercover videos of factory farms and slaughterhouses is
wrong. (There are those who will defend a system that allows for occasional
animal cruelty, but no one defends the cruelty, itself.) And despite it being
entirely reasonable, the case for eating dogs is likely repulsive to just about
every reader of this paper. The instinct comes before our reason, and is more
important.

—Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of the novels "Everything is Illuminated"
and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." His new book, "Eating Animals," a
work of nonfiction, comes out next week.

* Update from the Field - TAKE ACTION!

The lands along Yellowstone's border remain quiet, with no sign of bison
migration beginning yet. This is good news, as Montana's so-called bison hunt
is set to begin ten days from now, on November 15. BFC volunteer migration has
begun, however, and day by day more folks are arriving at BFC Headquarters to
prepare for another season of buffalo defense.

Our thanks go out to everyone who has already sent in comments to the Animal &
Plant Heath Inspection Service (APHIS) on their Bovine Brucellosis Program
Concept Paper. APHIS would like nothing more than to continue mismanaging wild
buffalo and elk for the benefit of the cattle industry, but your voice will
challenge them to do otherwise. Nearly 100 comments have been posted so far,
with the overwhelming majority being for the wild. APHIS will accept comments
through December 4, 2009. You can read all about the proposal, review sample
talking points, read Buffalo Field Campaign's official comments, and TAKE ACTION
HERE.

Please share this information with your friends and colleagues and encourage
them to speak up for the buffalo! If you have questions please contact Darrell
or Stephany.

* Thank You for a Successful West Coast Road Show!

A special thanks to all of the buffalo family who once again helped spread the
word to save the herds. This fall's West Coast Road Show was a huge success.
First off, I would like to thank Good Shield who for the last six years has
dropped everything in his life to come on tour to help the buffalo. Phoenix
AfterBuffalo also came and played all the shows he could this year and has
confirmed again for next year. Our newest helper and mentor is the visionary
Derrick Jensen, who also committed to another show next year. Also a big
thanks to Sampson and Krista for their help year in and year out, thanks for
always being there. A big hearty thanks to the following people for making the
Road Show a success: Nikiya, Laura, Sundog, Amber, Cove, Jasper, Tony, Suzanna,
Frank, EARC, Sheila, Linda, Tony, Monica and Kingman. I'm sorry if I forgot
your name but I truly am thankful to all who help us save the buffalo in any
way.

I am planning a month long show next year Going from Washington to California
and back up to Montana through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Idaho.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to set one up in your community
next year.

With the Buffalo,
Mike Mease

TN - Roane Co. - Puppy Mill Bust 110 dogs!! - Roane could only handle
30..TONS of Pure Breds!!

_http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103941&catid=2_
(http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103941&catid=2)
Roane County's Animal Shelter is at full capacity, following the seizure
of nearly 30 dogs from a suspected puppy mill this week.
In a month, the number of seized animals could nearly triple.
"The inhumane confinement of the animals was just really the worst part,"
John Griffin, the Director of the shelter in Rockwood, said.
Late Wednesday night, authorities partially broke up a suspected puppy
mill near Midtown in the county. Griffin expects the owner of the dogs to
face six charges of _animal cruelty_
(http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103941&catid=2##) and
another half-dozen charges for not
vaccinating dogs against rabies.
"I stand firm and believe that this is the first puppy mill in Roane
County," Griffin said.
Thursday morning, 28 of the seized dogs sat in the county's shelter, most
of them with mange after living in their own feces for most of their lives.

"Living in the feces, the water was dirty, the food was old," Griffin
said.
More than those conditions, Griffin said the ammonia levels at the site
were high enough to cause damage to the dogs' respiratory system. Many of
the dogs were coughing and showing obvious signs of respiratory distress,
Griffin said.
Pictures taken by investigators that went on the raid show 30-40 dogs
living in buildings the size of boxcars, with large food dishes and water that,
in some cases, had turned green.
In all, they estimate the owner had about 110 dogs. The county only seized
30, because they simply don't have any more room at their shelter. Finding
the money for flea treatment and other veterinary costs is another major
obstacle.
Some of the dogs have serious conditions like cataracts, broken jaws, open
wounds, and even tumors.
After hearing of the case, Thursday afternoon, several groups came to give
the dogs some much needed TLC.
"Someone who would do something like this to innocent animals who have no
voices to protect themselves, to speak out for help, they don't need to
ever own another animal again," Sherrie Farver with Little Paws Canine Rescue
said.
Several different rescue groups armed with a sea of shampoo and medicine
tried to undo years of alleged neglect. _Second Chance K9 rescue_
(http://www.sck9r.org/) , _Little Paws_ (http://www.littlepawsrescue.org/) ,
the
_Small Breed Rescue of East Tennessee_ (http://www.sbret.com/) , and the

were all on hand.
"These are living, feeling beings," Farver said. "They don't deserve the
suffering they've been put through or the neglect."
As they washed one _poodle_
(http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103941&catid=2##) mix, they
hadn't even added the soap when a
consistent, dirty, brown stream of water was rushing toward the drain.
Technically, the dogs are evidence. The animal shelter plans to adopt them
out eventually, but first they have to get clearance from the judge. For
now, many of them will stay with the rescue groups until they can be legally
adopted to a _family_
(http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103941&catid=2##) .
With 80 dogs still at that suspected puppy mill, it's clear this is just
the beginning for the shelter and the rescue groups. They all say they'll be
ready if and when those other dogs are seized and ready to be given to a
loving family.
The rescue groups are volunteer-run and operate on donations. With some of
the dogs facing hundreds of dollars in vet bills, they are looking for
help. If you'd like to give them a hand, you can contact the Roane County
Animal Shelter at (865) 354-7387 and mention the puppy mill specifically.
"These are loving dogs, even though they've been through what they've been
through," Farver said.

Mourners
give wolf biologist howling send-off

Anchorage Daily News

By KYLE HOPKINS
khopkins@...

(11/07/09 19:11:33)

Friends literally howled in tribute to Gordon Haber on Saturday as more
than 80 people filled the Campbell Creek Science Center at a memorial
for the fiery wolf biologist.

Haber died in an Oct. 14 airplane crash in Denali National Park and
Preserve, one of countless flights he's made during decades of
single-minded study of eastern Denali wolves. Speakers Saturday
remembered that devotion as well as Haber's famously, sometimes thorny
personality.

"Gordon was a brilliant and dedicated scientist. He was quirky, he was
obstinate, but most of all he was a fearless advocate for wolves," said
wildlife photographer Johnny Johnson, a longtime friend.

At one point he led the crowd in a group howl. "He'd like that,"
Johnson said, pointing to the sky after 30 seconds of yowls.

Catching up with the

It is so very soothing to see that

Girl Leads Guangdong Protest Against Eating Cats
by Fauna on December 24, 2008
From Mop:
While working this afternoon [20 December 2008], I
received a telephone call saying that a batch of cats were going to be shipped
to Guangzhou,
asking everyone to bring cat food, water, etc. and go rescue the cats. Even
though we are Guangdong people [Cantonese] , we long ago despised those
heartless Guangdong people who
eat cats, these people having made all of us lose face. Cats, dogs,
all are very kind-hearted, affectionate animals, and absolutely should not be
eaten. Moreover, eating cats or dogs is not healthy and not hygienic, none of
them having been inspected by the Food Safety Administration, so who knows why
these damned people would go eat them. Today, we want to go stop these cats
pitiful fate, using all of our power to go save them.
Pictures from GZCat Blog: (over 1500 comments)
9:30 at night, the friends of cats gather at
Guangzhou Train Station.
“angle” [common misspelling of "Angel"] is a very
compassionate little MM,
only 17-years-old.
The water and food that everyone brought for the
kitty cats.
Television reporter interviewing us.
Homemade cat-friends signboard.
Please do not eat cats and dogs!
Cats are our friends, not food!
The police will not let us gather.
After looking at our fliers, they left.
Entering the train station to find the cat
shipment train.
Uncertain which end the cat shipping train is at,
everyone split into two directions.
Seeing the animal shipping train, “Angle” and I
dashed over to it.
So many so many train cars.
“Angle” cannot find the train car shipping the
cats, very dejected.
Have not seen the cat shipping train car.
Disappointed “Angle.”
Train manager staff says: There have been
shipments of cats before.
Netizen provided picture of train station cat
shipment car.
Poor kitty cats piled layer upon layer.
Kitty cat’s expression is so sad~ What are you
thinking about, my poor kitty.
Poor kitty-cat~ you must be thinking of escaping
these crowded cages of death.
These cruel people treat kitty-cats just like
this.
Please spare them, do not eat
them!

Make meat-eaters pay:
Ethicist proposes tax, says they're killing themselves and the planet
By Peter Singer
Sunday,
October 25th 2009, 4:00 AM
Wattsfor News

Taxes can do a lot
of good. They pay for schools, parks, police and the military. But that’s
not all they can do. High taxes on cigarettes have saved many lives – not
only the lives of people who are discouraged from smoking as much as they would
if cigarettes were cheap, but also the lives of others who spend less time
passively inhaling smoke.
No reasonable
person would want to abolish the tax on cigarettes. Unless, perhaps, they were
proposing banning cigarettes altogether – as New York City is doing with
transfats served by
restaurants.
A tax on sodas
containing sugar has also been under consideration, by Governor Paterson among
others. In view of our
obesity epidemic, and the extra burden it places on our health care system
– not to mention the problems it causes on a crowded New York subway when
your neighbor can’t fit into a single seat – it’s a
reasonable proposal.
But in all these
moves against tobacco, transfats and sodas, we’ve been ignoring the cow
in the room.
That’s right,
cow. We don’t eat elephants. But the reasons for a tax on beef and other
meats are stronger than those for discouraging consumption of cigarettes,
transfats or sugary drinks.
First, eating red
meat is likely to kill you. Large studies have shown that the daily consumption
of red meat increases the risk that you will die prematurely of heart disease
or bowel cancer. This is now beyond serious scientific dispute. When the beef
industry tries to deny the evidence, it is just repeating what the tobacco
industry did 30 years ago.
Second, we have
laws that ban cruelty to animals. Unfortunately in the states in which most
animals are raised for meat, the agribusiness lobby is so powerful that it has
carved out exemptions to the usual laws against cruelty.
The exemptions
allow producers to crowd chickens, pigs and calves in stinking sheds, never
letting them go outside in fresh air and sunlight, often confining them so
closely that they can’t even stretch their limbs or turn around.
Debeaking – cutting through the sensitive beak of a young chick with a
hot blade – is standard in the egg industry.
Undercover
investigations repeatedly turn up new scandals – downed cows being
dragged to slaughter, workers hitting pigs with steel pipes or playing football
with live chickens. We may not be able to improve the laws in those farming
states, but taxes on meat would discourage people from supporting these cruel
practices.
Third, industrial
meat production wastes food – we feed the animals vast quantities of
grains and soybeans, and they burn up most of the nutritional value of these
crops just living and breathing and developing bones and other unpalatable body
parts. We get back only a fraction of the food value we put into them.
That puts
unnecessary pressure on our croplands and causes food prices to rise all over
the world. Converting corn to biofuel has been criticized because it raises
food prices for the world’s poor, but seven times as much grain gets fed
to animals as is made into biofuel.
Fourth,
agricultural runoff — much of it from livestock production, or from the
fertilizers used to grow the grain fed to the livestock — is the biggest
single source of pollution of the nation’s rivers and streams, according
to the EPA. A
meat tax would be an important step towards cleaner rivers. By reducing the
amount of nitrogen that runs off fields in the Midwest into the Mississippi, it
would also stop the vast ?dead
zone? that forms in the Gulf of Mexico each year.
The clincher is that
taxing meat would be a highly effective way of reducing our greenhouse gas
emissions and avoiding catastrophic climate change.
Here’s just
how bad eating meat is for global warming.
Many people think
that buying locally produced food is a good way to reduce their carbon
footprint. But the average American would do more for the planet by going
vegetarian just one day per week than by switching to a totally local diet.
In 2006 the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization surprised many
people when it produced a report showing that livestock are
responsible for more emissions than all forms of transportation combined.
It’s now clear that that report seriously underestimated the contribution
that livestock — especially ruminant animals like cattle and sheep
– are making to global warming.
As a more recent
report by the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change has shown, over the critical next 20 years, the
methane these animals produce will be almost three times as potent in warming
the planet as the FAO report assumed.
Meat-eaters impose
costs on others, and the more meat they eat, the greater the costs.
They push up our
health insurance premiums, increase Medicare and Medicaid costs for taxpayers,
pollute our rivers,
threaten the survival of fishing communities in the Gulf of Mexico, push up food
prices for the world’s poor, and
accelerate climate change.
Red meat is the
worst for global warming, but a tax on red meat alone would merely push
meat-eaters to chicken, and British animal welfare expert Professor John Webster
has described the intensive
chicken industry as “the single most severe, systematic example of
man’s inhumanity to another sentient animal.?
So let’s
start with a 50% tax on the retail value of all meat, and see what difference
that makes to present consumption habits. If it is not enough to bring about
the change we need, then, like cigarette taxes, it will need to go higher.
Singer is professor
of bioethics at Princeton University,
the author of “Animal Liberation” and the author, with Jim Masion, of “The
Ethics of What We
Eat.”

ISAR's
Model Statute Regulating
Dog Breeding, Facilitation and Sales

At this very moment, literally countless numbers of dogs, certainly hundreds of
thousands, are held captive around the world in wretched conditions, while being
used and abused as living breeding machines by conscienceless breeders,
facilitators and commercial retail sales outlets whose only concern is for their
own profit.

Because much of that abuse occurs in the United States, and because ISAR's
self-imposed mandate is the protection of animals, we have prepared a
comprehensive Monograph containing ISAR's Model Statute Regulating Dog Breeding,
Facilitation and Sales. In effect, our Monograph is a brief in support of our
Model Statute. ISAR's approach to the dog breeding problem is revolutionary
because our goal is to end virtually all breeding of dogs in the United States
and to prohibit the importation of canines bred elsewhere. End the breeding, not
perpetuate it.

ISAR's Model Statute's imposition of tough regulations on breeders, facilitators
and commercial retail sales outlets is unapologetically draconian. This is our
intention and our goal, because only in this manner can the dog-trade's
participants' appalling, and often illegal, conduct be regulated out of
existence once and for all.

Non-profit organizations usually solicit contributions to support their
activities through direct mail campaigns.

But that doesn't make sense for ISAR.

For one thing, today's costs of direct mail solicitation by organizations like
ISAR, which lack multi-million dollar budgets, greatly exceed a reasonable
return. Frankly, ISAR would rather use the money we have to support our humane
education programs (www.isaronline.org). Second, we believe that what we do --
from our published monographs, to our litigation, to our efforts to prevent
Michael Vick from benefiting by abusing dogs, and much more (www.isaronline.org)
-- speaks for itself.

ISAR needs ongoing contributions to continue and broaden our animal rights
programs. It's as simple as that.

If you like what we do, please donate.

Among the many blessings of the Internet is the phenomenon called the
"Weblog"--- or "Blog" for short.

Originally mostly a vehicle for the expression of the author's personal views on

Subject: [stopthekilling] Letter of Lies!

Close up of a
truck load of LAAS dogs being being dumped by garbage trucks at D
and D Disposal

Below is a letter that Jacob
Motta, Director of Constituent Services for the Mayor's office, is sending out
in reply to humane advocates demanding a proper search be done for a
progressive, No-Kill General Manager for LA Animal Services. Not only is Motta's
reply filled with lies (do you expect anything different from this Mayor's
office?) but it is factually incorrect.

Motta has never stepped foot into any of the
six city shelters; he doesn't know how many adoptions are taking place and he
certainly doesn't know anything about the piles of dead companion animals
filling the freezers at LAAS. Yet in this propaganda-filled reply letter,
Jacob Motta is praising Kathleen Davis for things she is NOT even
doing!

Adoptions are NOT at an all-time high level,
this is simply a flat-out lie. We know from many LAAS employees,
volunteers and rescuers that Davis is NOT, as Motta states, "working to
enhance the department's spay-neuter efforts, strengthen enforcement of animal
welfare laws, work better with the volunteer and rescue communities on behalf of
the animals."

The Mayor's office has lied to the
humane community for the past five years and is STILL lying. The victims
are, of course, the animals who are being killed at a higher rate than when Boks
was in power. Davis knows nothing about implementing progressive, No-Kill
programs, protocols and policies. Please contact those at the bottom of this
post and demand that a search committee be appointed ASAP and a public and
professional search be done for a GM immediately.

On Thursday ADL-LA will send out a
reply post to Motta's 'e-mail of LIES' sent by a humane advocate who
was one of the recipients of Motta's e-mail! You can read what those
in the humane community are saying to these unscrupulous public
officials.

Meat Consumption as a Social Phenomenon
New Blog Entry, HRC-Authored, Entered on 11/2/2009

A recent article in WIRED magazine got me thinking about the importance of
social interactions when it comes to advocating meat reduction, vegetarianism,
and veganism. The article focuses on increases in obesity and reductions in
cigarette smoking, which I believe provide useful examples of the trajectory
that meat consumption might follow. With smoking in particular, marginalization
of the behavior has come quickly and abstinence from smoking has seemingly
reached critical mass.

TN - Roane Co. - Puppy Mill Bust 110 dogs!! - Roane could only handle
30..TONS of Pure Breds!!

http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=103941&catid=2

Roane County's Animal
Shelter is at full capacity, following the seizure of nearly 30 dogs from a
suspected puppy mill this week.
In a
month, the number of seized animals could nearly triple.
"The inhumane
confinement of the animals was just really the worst part," John Griffin, the
Director of the shelter in Rockwood, said.
Late Wednesday night,
authorities partially broke up a suspected puppy mill near Midtown in the
county. Griffin
expects the owner of the dogs to face six charges of animal cruelty and another
half-dozen charges for not vaccinating dogs against rabies.
"I stand firm and
believe that this is the first puppy mill in Roane County ," Griffin said.
Thursday morning, 28 of
the seized dogs sat in the county's shelter, most of them with mange after
living in their own feces for most of their lives.
"Living in the feces,
the water was dirty, the food was old," Griffin said.
More than those
conditions, Griffin said the ammonia levels at the site
were high enough to cause damage to the dogs' respiratory system. Many of
the dogs were coughing and showing obvious signs of respiratory distress,
Griffin
said.
Pictures taken by
investigators that went on the raid show 30-40 dogs living in buildings the size
of boxcars, with large food dishes and water that, in some cases, had turned
green.
In all, they estimate
the owner had about 110 dogs. The county only seized 30, because they simply
don't have any more room at their shelter. Finding the money for flea treatment
and other veterinary costs is another major obstacle.
Some of the dogs have
serious conditions like cataracts, broken jaws, open wounds, and even tumors.
After hearing of the
case, Thursday afternoon, several groups came to give the dogs some much needed
TLC.
"Someone who would do
something like this to innocent animals who have no voices to protect
themselves, to speak out for help, they don't need to ever own another animal
again," Sherrie Farver with Little Paws Canine Rescue said.
Several different rescue
groups armed with a sea of shampoo and medicine tried to undo years of alleged
neglect. Second Chance K9
rescue, Little
Paws, theSmall Breed Rescue of
East Tennessee, and the Roane County Humane
Society were all on hand.
"These are living,
feeling beings," Farver said. "They don't deserve the suffering they've
been put through or the neglect."
As they washed one poodle mix, they hadn't even added the soap when a
consistent, dirty, brown stream
of water was rushing toward the drain.
Technically, the dogs
are evidence. The animal shelter plans to adopt them out eventually, but first
they have to get clearance from the judge. For now, many of them will stay with
the rescue groups until they can be legally adopted to a family.
With 80 dogs still at
that suspected puppy mill, it's clear this is just the beginning for the shelter
and the rescue groups. They all say they'll be ready if and when those other
dogs are seized and ready to be given to a loving family.
The rescue groups are
volunteer-run and operate on donations. With some of the dogs facing hundreds of
dollars in vet bills, they are looking for help. If you'd like to give them a
hand, you can contact the Roane County Animal Shelter at (865) 354-7387
and mention the puppy mill specifically.
"These are loving dogs,
even though they've been through what they've been through," Farver
said.

                         CONSTANT PAIN & STRESS

For the second year, the Norwegian animal organization
Nettverk for Dyrs Frihet (Network for Animal Freedom) has been running
independent inspections in Norwegian fur farms and have discovered shocking
conditions in which animals live. The extensive suffering they saw in nearly 50
fur farms is simply heartbreaking, and this just after the Norwegian minister of
Agriculture said that fur animals were treated humanely in Norway.

Who would question "ethical" fur coats from Norway which is
considered civilized? Norwegian animal caring people have a different story to
tell, and since bad habits die hard, fur animal abusers are putting up a good
fight against animal rights activists in Norway. Fearing the negative
repercussion it will cause to their business, efforts are being made to
discredit pro-animal groups who have dared to speak out against the atrocities.
As we all know, it is now fashionable to portray animal people as "radicals &
terrorists," thus, our counterparts in Norway need all the support they can get
at home and abroad. As usual, our mission is offer support to anti-fur activists
worldwide, and our Norwegian friends do need our support so they may be continue
exposing the unimagineable cruelty of the bloody fur trade.

Please watch the video so you may have an idea of how much
suffering Norwegian fur animals are enduring for vanity, and greed of the
multi-million dollar fur industry. Sadly, we have no other choice, dear animal
friends, than to ask you to please help us speak out for fur bearing animals in
Norway as well.

The above information is déjà vu. About 3 years ago, the
British journalist, Jonathan Owens, visited a supposedly "top notch" fur farm in
Norway, and wrote this article:

PLEASE DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM THEIR DISPAIR.
                   CATS EN ROUTE TO GUANGZHOU:

                   Dear friends of Chinese animals,

For the last few years, we have been helping Chinese animal
caring people and each time we present a new group that so need help in order to
survive and flourish in their areas.

Last time, we introduced ("New Beautiful World"
www.people4chineseanimals.org/Beautiful_New_World.html<http://www.people4chinese\
animals.org/Beautiful_New_World.html> ). This is a group of 10 caring people
who could no longer live with the suffering of an overwhelming number of strays
in their city. It's estimated that in Beijing alone there are over 500,000
stray pets. This group has, for the last five years, been responsible for
spaying or neutering over 10,000 stray cats in Beijing. Like BNW, there are so
many more groups being formed all over China, all struggling to help stray
animals which so suffer being victims of abuse in the streets and ending up in
the meat/fur market.

For those who don't know, there are two cities in China which
are the starting points for the horrors that are perpetrated upon stray or
stolen pets. The poor victims somehow make their way either to the cities of
Nanking or Shanghai and then shipped to Guanghzou where the infamous live meat
market resides. For days, animals travel in the worst possible conditions,
packed in small cages and without food or water until they meet with the most
brutal killings that goes beyond anyone's imagination.

There have been outcries throughout China about the horrors
these loving animals endure. Be it a person who had his/her pet stolen or just
an animal caring person, they all agree that this nightmare must stop.
Unfortunately, their voices fall short in making an effective political
statement, but more people are becoming conscious of the tragedy which appears
to have no end in sight. Exactly because of this desperate condition, people
are going to the extreme of negotiating with cat-nappers who usually carry false
documentation when transporting the animals and the police can do nothing. Thus,
animal people end-up purchasing entire truck load of cats (as many as 2000 at a
time) to help stop the trade. In Shanghai alone, there have been many such
rescues this past year.

Whether the question is if it's wise to go on rescuing so many
pets when there is little infra-structure for them, the truth is that these
actions are having a positive effect as pet-nappers are beginning to feel the
heat. It is not as easy as before to go on stealing pets to send to their
hellish demise. Animal caring people in Shanghai and other cities are becoming
united against the criminals that are making a buck on so much blood and
suffering.

However, as we all know so well, these groups also need help
since they all operate on their own dime which vanishes very fast when faced
with several hundreds of cats at once.

At this time, I would like to introduce to you this new
wonderful group in Shanghai which has been responsible for incredible acts of
compassion and courage by rescuing over 3000 cats from cat-nappers. An
impressive percentage of these animals have all been adopted or returned to
their homes, but many are still homeless and being taken care of by this
compassionate grassroots group which so need our help:
www.people4chineseanimals.org/GUANGDONG-CATS.html<http://www.people4chineseanima\
ls.org/GUANGDONG-CATS.html>

Thank you for reading our news alert!
                   SHANGHAI CAT PROTECTION
GROUP<http://www.people4chineseanimals.org/GUANGDONG-CATS.html>

This is a criminal who DID NOT GET AWAY after illegally
killing an incredible number of cats -- for fur and meat. Just thought you'd all
enjoy this picture.

Hi Melanie.

Please feel free to share my response with as many people as you would like.

I think this dog needs his own website, and I also have some recommendations. I
would like to do so much more but I have very slow dial up internet and it would
not get completed in a timely manner but perhaps I can offer some guidance here.

First, like I said, this dog needs his own website and you should link it to
everything you can find to link it to, petfinder, Iams, Pedigree's stop cruelty
sites, try www. netposse.com and offer reward for the right information, try
ASPCA websites and attempt to get ahold of Animal Planet or at least some of
their shows.
THis dog needs his name to give him personal appeal, if he does not have one,
please let's give him one. He deserves that.

Also we need to try to find out where this man got this dog to begin with, get
that person in on the fight. They probably don't know what he has done. They
need to know. They might have a contract that he broke.

Need to start a nationwide interest in locating this attoney who called from
Texas, if he went that far, he will help you.
THere needs to be a letter to the editor written inviting anyone who has any
comments to call you or someone who will volunteer to help you, this dog needs
his own support group to stop the cruelty, council meetings should be bombarded
by members of this organization on a regular basis, the mothers of the children
who witnessed this need to take their child to counselling and file a document
with the court house reflecting this.

Check his background see if he has likely been in trouble for abuse of his
spouse and child. Most people who will do this are domestically violent to
people as well, well documented by domestic violence polls all over Kentucky,
file a petition, make it available online to sign,

and invite everyone to send a letter of disgust to their senator and their
representative, both are animal lovers, call every television station within 100
mile raduis, they love to get ahold of stuff like this, post flyers around town
inviting anyone who wants to comment, help out, to attend the council meetings,
consider placing jars in vet offices pet shops and banks to donate to help jail
this fellow,
and on the dog's website should be a click to donate to his legacy to stop the
cruelty and jail his perpetrators.

Contact PETA and ASPCA directly about this.

Consider if this isnt enough putting a float in the parade, booth at the county
fair, get as many names on the petition as possible and get as many people as
possible to promise to call people of authority until they do something. Get
your hands on the corpse whatever it takes. File a formal complaint against him
in the court room using the emotional damage he done to the children on the
schoolbus as well as anyone else who cannot sleep after seeing this.

Call all the television attorneys up that are on there all the time begging for
people who took different prescrption medications to call, like James Sokolove,
etc, they do this because they are bored, they will love to get ahold of this.

Get the name of the neighbor he alleged killed the dog and proclaim it just as
loudly as you proclaim Wesley's name make sure you don't put one over the other.
Place both names on the website. Invite the public to think about who they think
done it.

If his neighbor has one ounce of decency and good sense that will be effective
enough right there to get him sued for false accusations, (you arent accusing
the neighbor you are just saying WEsley accused him).

THis will get you started.
Anything I can do that does not involve being quick on the internet I will be
delighted to do.

Keep me posted and make sure I get a link to the website for the dog.
Whomever did this should pay for it.
Wish you well in the endeavor please don't give up the fight you are doing a
good thing.

The phone number of the Morehead post is 606 784-4127.

Dear Captain Blanton:

I have called the Morehead State Police Post 2 times to get information on the
incident in Bath County concerning the shooting and the hanging of the Golden
Retriever in Owingsville this week.

Both times I have been told that this is a "local" issue to be taken care of by
our Animal Control Officer, Roger Wayne Tapp. So it is my understanding that
your trooper and Roger Wayne Tapp stood on the grounds with Wesley Barrett after
the dog was shot, and then hung by a chain, from his tractor in full view, on a
road that the schoolbus takes, carrying school children, and your trooper walked
away from the scene and did nothing.

I'm not faulting Tapp because he has not been trained in law enforcement.

I also understand that Barrett took the body of the dog down before your trooper
got there. Of course he did. Your trooper did not ask for the body of the dog,
or the name of the "neighbor" who supposedly shot this dog. Your trooper did not
go and speak to the neighbor. Your trooper did not ask for directions to this
"neighbor's" house. He just walked away.

The Kentucky State Police are here to help us and protect us. We depend on you.
Remember the horses on Route 211 that were allowed to starve to death because
the KSP did not want to take action? That is still on Bath County citizens'
minds, I can assure you.

The Kentucky State Police are not sympathetic or proactive when it comes to
animal abuse. I, and the hundreds of Rescuers that are reading this email, want
that changed. This insanity has to stop. And the KSP has the power to do it.
I've called various times for help in abuse cases and have been told that this
is a "local issue". NO, it is not. It is OUR ISSUE to be taken care of by law
enforcement. KSP has to stop passing this buck on animal abuse.

Your trooper could have helped Roger Wayne Tapp and could have advised him as to
what to do. THAT is what he gets paid for, incidentially, by OUR taxes, and we,
in turn, gladly pay our taxes so that HE can help US.

The evidence is gone by now, probably. Barrett has had time to dispose of the
body and the gun he used to shoot the dog. All thanks to a State Trooper who
chose to DO NOTHING.

I can assure you that there are hundreds, maybe now, even thousands, of Rescuers
that have seen that picture of that poor Golden and they are waiting to see how
Kentucky government and law enforcement handle this incident.

I respectfully wait to hear from you, or someone from KSP concerning how this
was handled. I would hope that KSP will make an effort to assist in this so we
can bring charges against this man.

CONSTANT PAIN & STRESS

For the second year, the Norwegian animal organization Nettverk for Dyrs Frihet
(Network for Animal Freedom) has been running independent inspections in
Norwegian fur farms and have discovered shocking conditions in which animals
live. The extensive suffering they saw in nearly 50 fur farms is simply
heartbreaking, and this just after the Norwegian minister of Agriculture said
that fur animals were treated humanely in Norway.

Who would question "ethical" fur coats from Norway which is considered
civilized? Norwegian animal caring people have a different story to tell, and
since bad habits die hard, fur animal abusers are putting up a good fight
against animal rights activists in Norway. Fearing the negative repercussion it
will cause to their business, efforts are being made to discredit pro-animal
groups who have dared to speak out against the atrocities. As we all know, it is
now fashionable to portray animal people as "radicals & terrorists," thus, our
counterparts in Norway need all the support they can get at home and abroad. As
usual, our mission is to offer support to anti-fur activists worldwide, and our
Norwegian friends do need our support so they may be continue exposing the
unimaginable cruelty of the bloody fur trade.

Please watch the video so you may have an idea of how much suffering Norwegian
fur animals are enduring for vanity and greed of the multi-million dollar fur
industry. Sadly, we have no other choice, dear animal friends, than to ask you
to please help us speak out for fur bearing animals in Norway as well.

The above information is déjà vu. About 3 years ago, the British journalist,
Jonathan Owens, visited a supposedly "top notch" fur farm in Norway, and wrote

This FUR FREE FRIDAY, let's join protesters worldwide to speak out for those who
are denied the minimum basis of common decency. The Norwegian Embassy is chosen
at this time because of the extreme disregard for fur bearing animals in their
fur farms. Other such countries will be addressed at later dates. The demo at
the above fur retailers'row are our usual protests against those who benefit
from blood money. We look forward to seeing you at both events!

Last year's anti-fur march was part of more than 30 protests worldwide, a joint
effort with the international anti-fur coalition. Here in DC, the local anti-fur
coalition, consisting of 5 groups held hands and produced one of the best
protests ever. On Youtube:

PLEASE DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM THEIR DISPAIR.

CATS EN ROUTE TO GUANGZHOU:

Dear friends of Chinese animals,

For the last few years, we have been helping Chinese animal caring people and
each time we present a new group that so need help in order to survive and
flourish in their areas.

Last time, we introduced "New Beautiful World"
ey=f3ce&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.people4chineseanimals.org%2FBeautiful_New_World.htm\
l> www.people4chineseanimals.org/Beautiful_New_World.html . This is a group of
10 caring people who could no longer live with the suffering of an overwhelming
number of strays in their city. It's estimated that in Beijing alone there are
over 500,000 stray pets. This group has, for the last five years, been
responsible for spaying or neutering over 10,000 stray cats in Beijing. Like
BNW, there are so many more groups being formed all over China, all struggling
to help stray animals which so suffer being victims of abuse in the streets and
ending up in the meat/fur market.

For those who don't know, there are two cities in China which are the starting
points for the horrors that are perpetrated upon stray or stolen pets. The poor
victims somehow make their way either to the cities of Nanking or Shanghai and
then shipped to Guanghzou where the infamous live meat market resides. For
days, animals travel in the worst possible conditions, packed in small cages and
without food or water until they meet with the most brutal killings that goes
beyond anyone's imagination.

There have been outcries throughout China about the horrors these loving animals
endure. Be it a person who had his/her pet stolen or just an animal caring
person, they all agree that this nightmare must stop. Unfortunately, their
voices fall short in making an effective political statement, but more people
are becoming conscious of the tragedy which appears to have no end in sight.
Exactly because of this desperate condition, people are going to the extreme of
negotiating with cat-nappers who usually carry false documentation when
transporting the animals and the police can do nothing. Thus, animal people
end-up purchasing entire truck load of cats (as many as 2000 at a time) to help
stop the trade. In Shanghai alone, there have been many such rescues this past
year.

Whether the question is if it's wise to go on rescuing so many pets when there
is little infra-structure for them, the truth is that these actions are having a
positive effect as pet-nappers are beginning to feel the heat. It is not as
easy as before to go on stealing pets to send to their hellish demise. Animal
caring people in Shanghai and other cities are becoming united against the
criminals that are making a buck on so much blood and suffering.

However, as we all know so well, these groups also need help since they all
operate on their own dime which vanishes very fast when faced with several
hundreds of cats at once.

At this time, I would like to introduce to you this new wonderful group in
Shanghai which has been responsible for incredible acts of compassion and
courage by rescuing over 3000 cats from cat-nappers. An impressive percentage
of these animals have all been adopted or returned to their homes, but many are
still homeless and being taken care of by this compassionate grassroots group
which so need our help:

Transport Fakes that take to labs!

Subject: ANIMAL RESEARCH POSING AS RESCUE OR TRANSPORT- CROSS-POST

Many of you are already aware that there are groups associated with animal
research who pose as Rescue and/or Transport Groups periodically with the
full intent of stealing the animals in transport and delivering and/or
selling them for animal research.

The complete listing has been included in a new file in the FILE section
of our index. Please copy and paste for your convenience and refer often to
the names listed.

I'm sure there are other groups or names associated with animal research
that we are not aware of - but this will at least aid us in keeping safe. As
you come across additional names that should be added to this list - post
them here and they will be added to the filed list.

Thanks - Christy

Student Accused Of Killing Cat, Using Organs As Bait‏

LOGAN, Ohio — A prosecutor expressed frustration Thursday at not being
able to file tougher charges against a college student accused in a
heinous case of animal cruelty.

According to prosecutors, the student killed and mutilated a
stranger's house cat, then used the animal's organs as fishing bait,
10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

Humane Society agent Saundra Harvey called it the worst case of animal
abuse she has ever seen.

"He went to a home, went up on the porch, picked up a cat, took it to
his pickup truck, threw it on the ground," Harvey said. "The cat was
meowing; he stomped its head, proceeded to disembowel it, took its
liver and went fishing with it."

The accused, Bryan Able, 18, is a law enforcement student at Hocking
College, McEntyre reported.

animalsaread...

The federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued its 2010 Round-up
Schedule which provides for the capture of a staggering 12,000 additional wild
horses and burros, at the cost of 32 million of our tax dollars! Given BLM?s
recent handwringing over the number of horses in government holding, this
announcement is simply baffling. More than ever, America?s wild horses are
under siege, their long-term survival increasingly threatened.

Nevada?s Calico Complex, with over 2,500 horses slated for removal next month,
is high on the list of questionable removals and another example of BLM?s
out-of-control behavior. This herd was last rounded up in 2005, when BLM left
an estimated 575 horses on the range and gave the mares a contraceptive vaccine.
Yet, BLM now claims there are over 3,000 horses in that same area, a
preposterous number, even by BLM standards. Locals familiar with the herd are
adamant there are far from that many horses left on that range. Indeed, only
BLM?s creative accounting could find that a herd has quintupled in size in less
than five years, let alone a herd under a contraceptive program!

Interesting background information: last year, BLM authorized a 300% increase in
cattle grazing for the area, and the building of a fence that BLM itself
admitted might cut wild horses from their winter range and cause them to die.
Wild horses would also be locked out of the best pasture with the most abundant
water during the driest time of the year. At the time, BLM justified its
decision by arguing that wild horse populations in the area were minimal. A
couple of months later, it came out with its puzzling claim of population
explosion, setting the stage for this massive round-up.

Clearly, something here is amiss. Where did these 3,000 horses come from?

Comments to BLM regarding this round-up must be provided by Thursday, November
12, 4:30 pm PST to Jerome Fox, BLM, 5100 E. Winnemucca Blvd., Winnemucca, NV
89445; Fax: (775) 623-1503; Email: NV_WFO_Webmail@... (please be sure to
include the following reference #: DOI-BLM-NV-W030-2010-0001-EA)

More importantly, the Department of Justice, which is currently investigating
BLM for other misdeeds, must be made aware of another instance of this federal
agency running amok. Please express your concerns over BLM?s questionable
practices and continued mismanagement of our wild horses to:

“I could smell it as soon as I entered the apartment building. As I walked up
to the fourth floor the smell got stronger and stronger. Knocking on her door,
I knew I was not going to be happy with what I was about to see,” said Maggie
Shaarawi, one of the founders of Animals Lebanon.
“An old woman came to the door but did not want to let me in. There were no
lights on and the smell was terrible. I showed her the cat food I brought and
told her how much I love cats. This was all it took to gain some trust, and she
opened the door for me to come in.”
Recently, Animals Lebanon received a call from the Beirut Municipality
concerning an elderly woman living with a large number of cats. The neighbors in
the building were filing a law suit against this woman as the conditions had
become so bad that they could barely live there anymore. We were suspicious at
first as sometimes people exaggerate greatly just because they don’t like
animals.
The Municipality was under orders to catch the cats and remove them from the
building, but not knowing how to catch them they called Animals Lebanon for
help. Animals Lebanon pleaded with the Municipality, asking them to hold off on
any action and that we would see what was going on and how we could help.
“The door only opened halfway, but as it did the smell became overwhelming.
There was no electricity and very little light. I used my mobile phone as a
flashlight to be able to see a bit, and realized the door did not open because
there was so much trash behind it. There were things everywhere, old bottles,
mattresses, furniture, newspapers, all piled up in the tiny apartment. And then
I started to notice the cats – their eyes shining from the light from my
phone, quiet meows seemed to come from everywhere.”

Click here to learn how Animals Lebanon is rescuing these cats and making sure
the woman is cared for, and see what you can do now to help.

Hello friends of Placer County deer,

1) We're still putting pressure on the supes to agendize the hunt expansion,
but are running into walls. We have two votes to agendize and hopefully stop
the hunt, but need one more. Rockholm and Weygandt are playing hard to get, so
we need renewed pressure on them. If you live in Roseville, your pressure on
Rockholm is crucial, as he's the chair and sets the agenda. And yes, even Uhler
should still be targeted. Please keep calling and writing, insisting on a
meeting as well as expressing opposition to the hunt. Be polite but persistent.
It's okay to be annoying sometimes.
Please keep asking your friends as well, as each person counts in a grass roots
campaign like this. And don't forget to thank Holmes and Montgomery for being
willing to listen to us. It would be easier for them to try and shove this
further under the carpet, as the others have, but they've been receptive and
respectful. They do need to know that there's a third vote though.

Key points -
The expanded hunt has NO relation to Uhler's initial "concern" about car
collisions.
They do NOT need to wait for the official DFG letter to agendize or stop the
expansion. That's a stall tactic.
There is NO evidence that there is deer overpopulation or disease.
The only purpose for this expansion is to increase hunter opportunities and thus
revenue for DFG. Do the supes really want to take the risk with no county
benefit?

2) Keep up the letters to the editors, and be sure to mention any supes
refusing or avoiding meetings with you. Voters need to know. Please bcc us on
any emails or letters.

3) On a larger front, the head honcho of the Cal. Dept. of Fish & Game abruptly
resigned recently, which gives us a golden opportunity to press for a non-hunter
to be appointed. Please contact the governor and politely ask him to choose
someone who represents the 99+% of Californians who do not hunt and are
unrepresented where our wildlife are concerned.

For a change of pace, send a note to Maria and Christina Shriver. Christina has
put pressure on dad on other animal issues, so it doesn't hurt to plead our case
with her.

PLEASE urge your Reps in Washington and the President to support a
moratorium on Wild horse and burro gathers by the BLM pending outcome
of a Congressional Committee investigation. As I write this, more wild
horses and burros are being captured using helicopters, a method which
injures and kills these magnificent, innocent creatures. Please visit

HELP BAN LIVE
COYOTE/FOX BAIT DOG TRAINING IN INDIANA
YOUR VOICE NEEDED!

On
November 17th, the Indiana Natural Resources Commission will consider several
formal
petitions to prohibit the taking, killing and harassment of coyotes and red
foxes for “penning” purposes and as live bait in the wild.
Current
loopholes in Indiana’s wildlife regulations allow the capture and killing
of coyotes and red foxes by dogs in the wild. Moreover, no rule or law exists
prohibiting the trapping and selling of coyotes and foxes in state or across
state lines to “penning” facilities where these wild canines are
then used to “train” hunting dogs in “running pens;”
this practice is allowed for five months of the year during the furbearer
trapping season. Operators of the running pens often charge a fee for
individuals to “train” their hunting dogs on the captive coyotes
and foxes. This practice — commonly referred to as
“’penning” — violates the concept of “fair
chase” and runs counter to fundamental concepts of wildlife management.
Project
Coyote and the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) strongly support a ban on these
practices. We have garnered the support of many prominent scientists, wildlife
biologists, veterinarians, and attorneys who have joined us in urging the
Commission to ban these practices (see Project
Coyote and AWI’s sign-on letter to the Commission). Moreover, the
Indiana Department of Natural Resources (INDNR) has acknowledged that there are
ecological, ethical, and disease/health related issues associated
with penning.
PLEASE
VOICE YOUR SUPPORT FOR THESE PETITIONS! You do not need to be an Indiana
resident to voice your opinion but you do need to clearly state your city,
state, and country of residence for your comment to be officially considered
(see INDNR’s rules
about commenting). Please write a letter to the Commission urging them to
support these formal petitions to move forward with the formal rulemaking
process to prohibit the taking, killing and harassment of coyotes and red foxes
for “penning” purposes and as live bait in the wild. LETTERS MUST
BE RECEIVED BY NOVEMBER 17TH!
If you
live in Indiana, please consider attending and testifying at the Commission
hearing on November 17th where they will decide whether to move forward to
preliminarily adopt these petitions and move forward with formal rulemaking
procedures. We need a good showing at this hearing! Details:
Date: November 17
Time: 10am (EST)
Place: Fort Benjamin Harrison - The Garrison (Fort Harrison State Park)
6002 North Post Road., Indianapolis, Indiana

should be addressed as follows:

RE:
Support for proposed rules to prohibit the taking, killing and harassment of
coyotes and red foxes for “penning” purposes and as live bait in
the wild
Dear
Commission members:
As a
concerned citizen who values wildlife, I strongly support the proposed rules to
prohibit the taking, killing and harassment of coyotes and red foxes for
“penning” purposes and as live bait in the wild. I strongly urge
you to move forward with the formal rulemaking process to end these brutal
practices.
POINTS
TO INCLUDE IN YOUR LETTER(please personalize your letter and use your own words
as this will have a much greater impact):
	 * ETHICALLY INDEFENSIBLE:Capturing, transporting, marketing, and penning wild
animals for dog training is inherently cruel and should be banned for this
reason alone. Pitting domestic canines against their wild cousins is ethically
indefensible. Legislators have had the wisdom to ban dog and cock-fighting –
largely on ethical grounds – and “penning” parallels these abhorrent
practices. Penned wild coyotes and foxes are often mutilated in a cruel and
unconscionable way- as acknowledged by the Indiana Department of Natural
Resources.
	 * ECOLOGICALLY RECKLESS:Transporting and marketing wild coyotes and foxes for
penning purposes is ecologically reckless. The Indiana Department of Natural
Resources explicitly stated these concerns acknowledging that trade and
transportation of wildlife is one of the primary contributors to disease
transmission and historically has led to the spread of rabies and other diseases
dangerous to wildlife, domestic animals and people.
	 * COUNTER TO SOUND SCIENTIFIC WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT:Coyote and fox penning is not
an effective method of coyote and fox control as acknowledged by numerous and
prominent scientists and wildlife biologists. There is no scientific evidence to
support the claim that penning operations somehow help reduce coyote/fox
populations on a state-wide level or mitigate negative encounters with coyotes
or foxes. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has acknowledged that
there are ecological, ethical, and disease and health related issues associated
with penning. Moreover, the Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies
passed a resolution in 2008 urging the adoption of state-by-state regulations
prohibiting the importation or interstate movement of foxes and coyotes for the
purpose of stocking coursing pens or for release and pursuit by hounds outside
of coursing pens.
For these
reasons, I urge you to support the proposed rules to prohibit the taking,
killing and harassment of coyotes and red foxes for “penning”
purposes and as live bait in the wild.
Thank you
for your consideration of my comments. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,

ethically indefensible practice will affect your plans to visit Indiana:

Urgent. Please forward to your friends.... thank you! Vanessa :)

Apparently, California's Department of Fish and Game is considering a ban
on any dogs that look like a wolf.

Here's an excerpt from the compassionate people at _www.CaPetBan.com_
(http://www.capetban.com/) that explains what the ban entails:

This site was created to fight The California State Fish and Game
Commission’s proposed regulations: State hearings on November 5, 2009 could
eliminate due process and allow officers to seize pets if they “look”
related to
a wild animal.

This affects any “wolfy” looking canine, i.e. Tamaskans, Utonagans,
Siberian Husky, German Shepherds, Northern Inuit Dog, Wolf Dogs, Akitas,
Belgian
  Shepherds….
These regulations specifically authorize the officers and wardens to
determine the species of your pet without the burden of proof, and requires the
application of the “most protective” standard. This will enable the state
and local animal regulation to seize your pets, force you to provide
containment systems that most people cannot meet or afford and perhaps worse.
Fish and Game standards are the basis for many protocols and actions for
local animal control. Many other breeds and species are also affected, and
this could be the start of a ban on other full breeds from the State of
California.
The people who have created the website _www.CaPetBan.com_
(http://www.capetban.com/) are still organizing and putting up a good fight to
remove
this pet ban from state regulations, and petitions are still crucial and
needed. If you or anyone wishes to learn more about what can be done, please
visit _www.CaPetBan.com_ (http://www.capetban.com/) .

Thank you again for all that you do!

For the animals.

Hi Patricia,

I learned about the potential for a “California Pet Ban” last night at a
Fire Safety Council meeting.

Will you please pass the news along to your list of concerned and loving
pet people?

Thanks, Carla
