Description

This group is for those interested in using a microscope for early identification of problems in their flock. Birds can hide illness until it becomes very difficult to treat, so regular screening of existing and new birds can alert you to problems before the disease progresses to this state and hopefully before it has a chance to spread. For birds showing symptoms, use of a microscope may provide you with an immediate indication of what is wrong.

Discussions tangential to illness are on topic, including discussion of common symptoms, prevention, and treatment options; however, the focus should remain on the use of the microscope for identification. Remember that many problems are opportunistic, which means that they may occur secondary to another problem. Therefore, there may be more to a bird’s illness than what you discover under the scope. There are also many conditions that cannot be identified in a simple fecal smear or fecal float. This group strongly recommends that a veterinarian be consulted any time a problem is found or symptoms are present. Attempts to treat yourself will frequently end badly and may lead to drug resistance; they are undertaken at your own risk. Using a microscope is not intended to replace a veterinarian, but instead to alert you in a more timely manner that a veterinarian’s assistance is needed.

A photo section will be maintained to include sample images of various problems taken by other members. All photos are the property of their respective authors and may not be reused without permission. A links section will also be maintained to include links to sources for supplies and for website articles addressing the topic.

Members of all levels of experience are welcome!
