It just makes me feel bad that there are such selfish uncaring people in the world - all this extra work for the county and disappointment for quite a few people and dogs in the area.
It sure made me realize once again how important Bandix is to our family.
When will it be open again?

If you been to the park recently, you will have noticed the pile of trash someone left at the bottom of the driveway. It has just been determined that some of the stuff is asbestos, so the county Haz Mat team will be cleaning it up. Until they do, the Health Department is closing the park. The current plan is for the cleanup to happen Friday.

There are 6,208 yahoo groups in that enormous
Rescue_and_Adoption category and I recommend you
move your group to a different category that is
much smaller or noone will ever find you.
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/HoweFarmPets/links/
Look at the last 3 links at the bottom of our links
section above.
I just created those 3 links for you,
to show you how to do this yourself or
to ask Yahoo.Inc to do this for you.
Either that, or contact the dopes at yahoo Inc and
tell them that Rescue_and_Adoption needs to have
state categories underneath it.
If you were the first group in a new Washington
Rescue_and_Adoption sub category that would
be a huge plus for growing your group.
-----------------
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/bones_dog_park/
It would also be better if this group was moved to the
Washington dogs category as well.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheBigDogProject/
If you renamed your group to this, it would not affect
anything except make your name easier to read.

Thank you for your message. I appreciate you taking the time to share your
concerns with me.
The chapter of law governing dogs contains several provisions of law that
originated in the early 1900s dealing with dogs running at large and
injuring livestock or other domestic animals. Specifically, a dog owner who
is notified that his or her dog is found killing a domestic animal must kill
the dog within 48 hours of the notification. Failure to kill the dog is a
misdemeanor offense. Similarly, these old provisions also mandate that it
is a duty of the sheriff to kill any dog found running at large without a
metal identification tag, from the beginning of August through the end of
February.
SB 5870, and another bill, SB 5200, update these old laws by repealing the
outdated requirements to kill dogs that are on the loose. SB 5870 was added
on to SB 5200 and the bill passed through the Senate with a unanimous vote
on March 2nd. The bill is now being considered in the House of
Representatives.
Thank you for your message. If I can ever lend a hand in any way, please do

Let's talk about it. I'd rather we work on keeping / paying
extra for the toilet that's there. It is not a composting toilet like I thought
but one that needs to be pumped. A problem with the portables is they are
targets for being tipped over -- its harder to tip over a locked concrete block
building.

I agree.
Parks doesn't have the money to have
staff open and close all year round. We have a large vandalism problem in the
County Parks and Island Lake's bathrooms were destroyed and it cost many
$10,000's to make repairs not to mention park's staff time and effort
to deal with the problem.
On the other hand I've proposed we
have volunteers lock and unlock the bathrooms but that has not been a
proposal Parks wants to consider right now. They are trying to just keep our
parks open. When there are budget cuts, Parks is considered discrentionary
spending and they are one of the first departments to be cut.
If you are interested in putting
together a volunteer group to lock and unlock the toliet, I've got a few
names from the last work party that are interested and I can put you in touch
with Parks Staff …

Update on the bathroom at Howe:
from Lori Raymaker, volunteer coordinator Kitsap
Parks,
The restrooms still need to be approved by the Kitsap
Health Department, per Dori. Once they are approved, the park staff will
handle opening, closing, and cleaning. These restrooms will follow the same
schedule as the rest of our park restrooms which are open to the public
from April through September. At the end of September, they will be
"winterized" and closed for the winter along with the rest of the
park restrooms.
and …
Please see the below
about the board. We would like to have another member who primarily uses
Howe on the board..
We are relatively
painless as far as meetings go, once a year a board meeting (an evening),
and once a year a membership meeting at Bandix. Other activities are by
email and at the parks.

Hopefully winter is behind us and
we can begin to really enjoy our park again. With that hope in mind
we have planned a work day and our Annual Membership Meeting and membership
drive for April 4, 2009 at the park. Attached is the notice about
both.
With the opening of Howe Farm and the closure (if only for a couple
of years) of Burley Olalla Road we hope we are not losing many of you from
active membership in the park. Your yearly membership donation is
what allows us to keep the park open and operating. Please try to
renew your membership during April so we have a working budget for the next
year. A membership renewal form is attached.
At the work day on April 4th some of us will be sporting
the new Bandix tee shirt and sweatshirt. Hopefully these will be
available for sale on that day. Tee-shirts will be $12 and sweatshirts will
be $35.00. The design is very cool and the quality of the shirts is
excellent – from the same folks who do the Tides shirts.
Even if you cannot attend the work day on the 4th in the morning,
please try to attend the membership meeting at 11:00. We need a
quorum of members to conduct business and we need to elect two members as
two board members terms are up for renewal or replacement. If you are

After reading the
striked out part of the law, I agree with Robyn. The law will read as amended
that the destruction of livestock is now not a prerequisite for requiring
sheriffs to shoot dogs. Does this mean Sherriff's shooting dogs in established off-leash
areas in parks?

Bring shovels, rakes, and pruners and help spiff up the park. We'll be
doing some fencing and weed pulling, plus making a new trail in the

When spring actually gets here, would anyone be interested in getting

interested in arranging a doggie play date.

go out behind the wooded area where the port-a-potty is. She was very
proud of herself. Being a dog she couldn't tell me where she got out.
I wanted to say though I am just so happy that the dog parks are there.
My dog just loves to run and run.
have a great day

County Poised to Clear SK Schools' Use of Howe Farm
If they have a composting toilet on Howe farm, are
they going to use that for dogpark waste instead
of trucking it to a landfill in thousands of tiny
plastic bags ?
Interesting story about Howe farm and how
support for a dogpark held firm despite the
whining of one administrator.

Subject: About dogs, please read
If you have a dog... PLEASE read this and send it on. If you don't
have a dog, please pass along to friends who do

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever
seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab
mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and
4:30 PM on Tuesday. He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking
about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service
until 7AM .
I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal
failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her
bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER
service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard
something about it, but... Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National
Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give I V fluids at 1
1/2 times maintainance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72
hours.
The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal
less than 27) and creatinine! over 5 ( 1.9 is the high end of
normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We
placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal
values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no
urine production after a liter of fluids. At the point I felt the
dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a
urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as
overnight care.
He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values
have continued to incr ease daily. He produced urine when given lasix
as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and
they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output
decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his
phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been
staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220.. He continued to vomit and
the owners elected to
euthanize.
This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea
raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a
dog of this very serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7
raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs
grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure
should give rise to immediate concern.
Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is
worth passing on to them.
Confirmation from Snopes about the above...

i join the many who are saddened by the news of gabe's passing.
someone once told me, after the loss of one of my best friends....to
remember the good times, and know that we gave them the best and
happiest lives we could.
we all know what it feels like to have a deep loss such as this.
please know you are not alone...and are in the thoughts and prayers of
many.

Gabriel, the St. Bernard belonging to Stan and Judy Stearns, died
Thursday from complications following surgery to remove part of a lung
which had become diseased from the spread of bone cancer.
If off-leash parks in Kitsap County were to name a mascot, it would
have to be Gabe. It was by Gabe's inspiration (and at his insistence!)
that Stan and Judy first approached Kitsap County officials about the
possibility of a dog park. Out of those discussions came the idea of
incorporating a group of volunteers (Kitsap Dog Parks) to partner with
the county, and out of that idea came Bandix and Howe Farm.
I don't mean to ignore the contributions from many people, but I think
all of you who were around at the beginning will agree that if it
hadn't been for the Stearnses' energy, vision, leadership, and
financial support, we might still be in the planning stages.
Stan and Judy, all of us know what it means to lose a special friend,
and we join you in your grief.

Thanks so much for the info.

Hi Kay
The park is not fenced, except at some of the areas where the trails
come closest to the park boundaries. So far, most dogs (with a few
exceptions that I know of) are content to follow the trails and not
push the boundaries. Howe Farm park in Port Orchard will have fencing,
but it is still closed while work goes on.
