Re: [canineimpa] chemical free mosquito repellant

HI Beth,

Anything you apply would be a chemical so I assume it's the synthetic pesticides and repellants that you want to avoid.  I live in a very rural part of New England and work at an organic farm.  That means I'm outside a lot with black flies (ARGHHH!!!) and mosquitos.

I've had good luck using Skeeter Screen (Scentshop.com).  It's a blend of botanical oils but the fact that they're all natural doesn't mean they may not have toxic properties (arsenic is a natural compound but obviously quite toxic!).  If you want to look up the ingredients, they are:

5% geraniol, cedarwood oil, geranium oil, rosemary oil, pepperment oil, clove bud oil, theyme oil, cintronella, deionized water, coconut oil, glycerin, lecithin, benzoic acid, sodium bicarbonate.

A friend used to spritz her dogs with a mix of Avon Skin-So-Soft and water.  The mosquitos definitely headed for my untreated dogs more than hers but i have no idea what's in the stuff.

~ Sherri
P.S. - My dogs never seem bothered by mosquitos.  It drives me crazy to see them all over their muzzle when we walk in the woods, but the dogs don't seem bothered in the least.

Subject: [canineimpa] chemical free mosquito repellant

Hello:

I am looking for suggestions on what to use on Mozart to keep mosquitoes away. I do not want to use anything with chemicals… in general but especially since he has liver issues I am working hard to keep all toxins away from him and away from our house.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Beth

Mozart – "pup extraordinaire" .... 5 yrs old, male , 50 lb flat coat retrv mix –
abandoned/rescued at approx 5 mos, neutered @ 7 mos,  IMPA(immune arthritis) @ 2yrs right after annual shots, Autoimmune Hypothyroid @ 3 yrs and stopped annual shots except Rabies (will look at Rabies altern ative before he is due again), Steroid induced liver failure @ 4 yrs (reversed in 4 months), SARDS (sudden blindness) @ 4 yrs, Slight heart murmer (grade 1 out of 6 heart murmer systolic at mitral valve but not heard again until May09)) first heard at 4 years and not heard again until 5 yrs, very hard to hear… varying Cushionoid symptoms since about 2.5 yrs old but they seem proportional to steroid levels - if we can get him off steroids for at least 2 weeks we will do full canine adrenal/steroid panel and ACTH stim blood work at UnivofTenn to see if he has adrenal issues
MEDS:  Varying levels of Prednisone and Imuran since IMPA struck at 2yrs old… Levothyroixine Sodium - 0.4mg 2 x day  since 3 yrs old …. Prepcid, Carafate, Prilosec at various times since 2 yrs old when taking high steriod doses… Tramadol for pain at various time when IMPA flares… Iron shots at various times from 2 to 4 yrs to treat mild anemia (not need in last 9 mos when we changed diet and dropped Imuran).)
WITHIN THE LAST 9 MONTHS WENT TO: Homemade GARD diet,  Levothyroixine Sodium - up to 0.5mg 2 x day in Apr09, several supplements/glandulars and complimentary care ( monthly chiropractic adjustments and homopathy formula with acupuncture)

Hi Sherri: Thanks! I agree that natural doesn’t mean non-toxic. I guess it is a matter of finding the mildest alternative. Mozart doesn’t seem bothered by...
