Hi and welcome

Well done on looking after those strays!

If you look at www.cwpg.demon.co.uk/widget-steps.htm this will give you
a free download of the first chapter of our little book on our own cats.
Some people in rescue centres have bought these from us at extremely low
prices in order to make a profit from selling them.

If you're interested let me know.

Cheers for now,

I bought my cats collars that reflect at night.

That way I can let them out for a last run around when it is quieter in
my area and still make sure they are safely indoors when I go to bed.

By the way I live in Hemel Hempstead which for those of you who
don't know is just north of Watford.

I have two cats Pepsi and Max! Yes I do drink the stuff.
They are about nine months old and mostly black with white bits.
One day when I can be bothered to find out how to use by free web
page a will put some pictures on it for you.

Hi everyone thought I had better introduce myself as well. My name is Karen, I
am 25 and I live in Somerset, in the countryside, and no I don't drink cider or
own a tractor!!!

I have two cats both just over a year old, a black and white female called
"Misty" and a tabby male called "Sam". They both appear on my web page, on the
photo page along with myself and my partner. URL is below so give us a visit
and check out my cuddly, friendly babies.
www.netcomuk.co.uk/~klmorris/index.htm

A bit about me, I work as a IT Support Helpdesk person and my main hobby is
computers, surprise suprise. Other than that I love cats, music, shopping, tv,
pubs, clubs, ten-pin bowling, skittles, and playstation games.

I thought I would ask a cat related question seeing as this is one of reasons I
joined this group, you have to try and understand cats somehow!!

My cat Misty is a very timid cat and runs off as soon as the doorbell goes,
phone rings, or she hears someone sneeze/laugh. Is there anyway I can stop her
being so afraid? She came from an animal rescue centre as a 6 week old kitten,
I don't know the history of how she ended up there. Friends and family who
visit on a weekly basis never ever see her, surely she must remember them each
time they turn up. She spent all xmas day outside in the rain beacuse we had
family round and she wouldn't come in until they left, we tried locking her in
with the cat flap shut but she kept clawing the cat flap until we let her out.

Any suggestions?

Regards

Karen

Hi Steve

I'm afraid that quite a few of my neighbours have ended up with
pancake-shaped cats, despite the whole area being 'traffic calmed'. That is
why I don't think it would be safe to let cats out of doors around here. I
would like an indoor cat or two, but we tend to be out a lot and it wouldn't
be fair to keep a cat cooped up on its own all day.

A few years ago one of my cats was a victim of a roadkill. It is not a very
pleasant experience and the driver didn't even stop. My poor little
she-cat died in agony after being literally squashed into the road. I never
want to go through that again.

Hi Ian,

I think one of the factors is that car headlights dazzle them and cats being
the highly-intelligent creatures they are, often freeze in the path of the
oncoming car. Also of course in partial darkness, drivers are less
well-able to see furry objects darting across roads.

It's not totally true that cats can see in the dark. In a completely
light-free room, cats are as blind as humans would be. However, cats are
able to see with as little as one sixth the amount of light that humans
would need. Thanks to the book "Catwatching" by Desmond Morris for this
information.

Hi David,

Greetings from down South!

I've noticed your name appearing in some of the cat newsgroups and I had
already visited your Website to read the funny cat articles written by
Matthew Gaunt (Leeds, UK). I thoroughly recommend that people visit David's
Webpage to read these hilarious articles by Matthew. They really are very
funny even if they are a little rude in places!

Welcome to cats-uk Jane! You're now one of 23 people subscribed to the
list. It's been a little quiet here so far but it's a new list and also
people have probably been too busy with the Christmas festivities to
contribute much.

You're being very sensible in not keeping cats if where you live is very
busy with traffic although you could opt to keep your cats indoors all the
time if you're worried about cars. Fortunately, I live in a quiet part of
Hitchin, Hertfordshire in a close so I'm reasonably happy about allowing my
cats outside during daylight hours. I always make sure they're kept in at
night though as I understand that cats are much more at risk from being hit
by cars during darkness. I'm in the process of looking for a larger home to
move into and one of my prime concerns is that it will be well away from
busy roads. I don't want to end up with pancake-shaped cats!

I've looked at the Cat News Desk. Very interesting information. I liked
the bit about the cat that jumped down the chimney to escape the magpies!

You can see my cats at www.idnet.co.uk/steve.littley/cats.html I have two,
both 2 and a half years old and both from the same litter. I'm at work at
the moment so they're both probably busy at home eating my house plants and
scratching the wallpaper! :-)

Hi All

I just signed up this group at the weekend, so I had better introduce
myself.

I'm Jane and I live in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. I am in-between clerical
jobs at the moment and I have been busy writing a few articles for
magazines.

I don't have any cats at the moment. About a year ago I moved out of my
mum's to live with my fiance and I had to leave my two cats behind. The
street I live on now is has far too much traffic on it to risk having cats
that are used to being outside. I still get to see my felines as my mum
only lives a few streets away.

Eric and Ernie cats are very keen on cyberspace and have two cat websites.
You're welcome to check them out any time.

As I am unable to have any cats here, I satisfy my cat addiction by buying
cat collectibles. I mainly collect cat books and postcards, but I have
smaller numbers of fridge magnets, soft toys and jewellery.

My non-feline interests include: computers, Celtic music,
sci-fi,cross-stitch, writing to penpals and growing cacti.

I don't know about your cats but mine seem to get through quite a lot of
litter. During the winter months, they spend most of their time inside so
it's at this time of year that the litter tray has to be emptied most
frequently.

Anyway.. I've found a surprisingly inexpensive source of cat litter. Netto
(a Scandanavian cut-price retailer which has several branches in the UK)
sell 5kg bags of litter for just 79p. It's not bad stuff either - quite
absorbent and clumps reasonably well and is even slightly scented. It's not
like some of the other cheap litter which just resembles gravel with no
absorbency properties.

If you have a Netto near you, go and try it. All you have to lose is 79p!
Also, with the bag weighing just 5kg, it's easy to lift.

Previously, I had been buying from Wilkinsons (2.99 for 10kg). I had
considered that to be good value for money before discovering the Netto
litter.

The North London RSPCA apparently doesn't have an actual shelter, and
relies mainly upon people fostering animals in their homes. I'd love to
volunteer to foster kittens (our flat's just too small for puppies, and
my husband doesn't like dogs) but I know myself - I'd get waaaaay too
attached and then we'd have another half-dozen cats. I have to say I am
*totally* impressed with the RSPCA in this area. They vetted us very
strictly, did home visits before and after we'd gotten the kittens,
supplied us with the second round of worming medication, and gave them
their first round of shots in-home so we wouldn't have to traumatize the
youngsters any more than was absolutely necessary. We're very fortunate
in that we live just down the street from the Royal Veterinary College,
so we only have to transport our cats about three blocks in order to
take them in for check-ups and shots and stuff. Our girls don't like
travelling, so I'm very grateful we don't have to take them far.

Yep, they tend to sleep either on the couch together or up on top of our
chest of drawers in the bedroom with us. They like to play together, and
constantly groom and 'kiss' each other. If one of them wanders off, the
other searches for it. We're going to have to get a big cat carrier so
we can transport them together to the vet next time 'round, since they
seem to derive a lot of comfort from being in the same carrier, and the
one we had when they were kittens is now too small for them.

Oh, and something I've noticed since we got them. It seems like *every*
cat I see when I'm out wandering around looks quite a lot like Pixel,
other than her rather unusual facial markings. We've come to the
conclusion that there's an incredibly sexually active black and white
tomcat prowling the streets of north London! Back in the area I lived in
in the States, the 'default' cat seemed to be grey tiger, and over here
it seems to be black-and-white!

Cheers,

Ana

Welcome Anastasia,

> got our cats from the North London RSPCA.

Mine came from Wood Green Animal Shelters. Despite the name, they didn't
actually come from the Wood Green in North London, rather from the shelter
the charity has at Heydon, on the Hertfordshire/Cambridgshire border.
Because I'm out at work all day and there would be no-one at home to keep a
cat company, I opted to get two cats so that they would be able to keep each
other company. The shelter was very happy I had decided to do this also.

I assume that they sleep together and help clean each other. My two are
like that although I wouldn't say that they're absolutelty devoted to each
other but they're pretty close. Where there is one, the other is never too
far away.

Steve

Hi folks,

Since everyone else is speaking up and introducing themselves, I guess I
should do the same. :)

My name is Anastasia Hunt and I'm an American living in the UK. I
married an English/Welshman (he gets bent out of shape if one doesn't
acknowledge the half-Welsh ancestry <g>) in August of 1997, and we got
our cats about two months after that. We live in Camden Town, London,
and got our cats from the North London RSPCA. I'm a graphic
designer/freelance writer who works from home where I keep our cats
company most of the day.

Our cats, or the Furry Grrls, as we call them, are sisters from the same
litter. Sadie, also known as the Minky, is a small, sleek little black
cat with enormous green eyes, and her big sister, Pixel is a bigger,
heavier, black cat with white markings (belly, boots, gloves, cravat,
moustache, whiskers and a little spot between her eyes - she appears to
be wearing a tuxedo with white gloves and spats) and enormous amber
eyes. Within about two days of their arrival as small kittens, they took
over control of the home, and we are now their abject slaves.

We feel so fortunate to have gotten these two. When I contacted the
RSPCA, and told them we would prefer a pair of litter-mate kittens and
had no need to look at them first, since we didn't care what they looked
like, we got bumped to the top of the list, because they had a pair they
didn't want to separate, and all other askers wanted single kittens.

It's easy to see why they wouldn't split up Pix and Sadie, since they're
absolutely devoted to each other. Sadie was evidently the smallest and
weakest of the litter, and Pix just sort of adopted her and looked after
her in their foster home. Pix is calm and sensible, and Sadie, while
being a bit wild and easily spooked, grew up into a healthy, active cat
who loves us and her sister and is happy in her home.

Looking forward to more cat conversations...

Cheers,

Ana

Welcome Garry,

Thanks for the information about yourself and your cats.

I set this list up only a couple of days ago and it was only today that I
sent some newsgroup postings advertising its existence. To date, there are
just four people subscribed but I'm sure that number will grow. I had been
a subscriber to another cat discussion list but felt that it was a little
too US-centric with almost all the subscribers being from the USA. The same
applies to a certain degree to the rec.pets.cats newsgroup hierarchy.

I have two tabby cats myself - both sisters from the same litter and they're
now two and a half years old. They may be from the same litter but they are
quite different in markings. Sandy has a ginger and white coat while Vicky
has shorter hair and is coloured black with a white underside. You can see
their pictures at www.idnet.co.uk/steve.littley/cats.html

Both are quite playful and are fun to be with. Sandy likes eating cheese
and onion-flavoured crisps although I shouldn't really feed her with them
because of the salt content. She also likes Heinz cream of mushroom soup!

The three of us live in Hitchin, North Herts.

Best wishes,

Steve

Well , I just subscribed to the list and I suppose it's traditional,
as with other lists, to post an introduction, so here goes.

I live with my wife in a small village on the Surrey/Sussex border,
she is a teacher of special needs children, I am a graphic
designer/writer.

We have three cats. all six years old, who have grown up together

Opus, Shakespear and Demi

Opus is a silver Main Coon, Demi is a Turkish Van, and Shakespear is a
fat , sleepy black and white short hair fron the CPL

Opus is big and odd and thinks he is a dog, following me around all
day crying to be let into every room I go into...its like having a
shadow.
Demi is the boss although she is the smallest she is like quicksilver
and full of character...and yes she does like water....hosepipes ....
but not the bath. I'm covered in scratches and teeth marks from her
energetic games.
Shakespear , likes to sleep a lot but, is very heavy and can bowl the
other two over when they play, he also like to eat, he will steal food
off your plate if you let him and sometimes if you don't he is
particulaury fond of prawn crackers and popadums...its funnt to see
him slinking off with a whole popadumm in his mouth.

anyway...

look forward to reading the list
cheers

Garry
