Description
Concerned Citizens for Jenny, a grass-roots Dallas Metroplex citizen’s group, advocates for retiring Elephant Jenny to an accredited elephant sanctuary.
Jenny has spent the last twenty-two years eking out a pitiful existence in a small, barren and antiquated enclosure. She lives in solitary confinement. This is inherently cruel as elephants are intensely social and require the company of others of their species. She is miserable.
Jenny has been confined to 1/4 acre for more than two decades. She suffers from maladies caused by restricted movement and from standing on hard surfaces. Three out of four elephants in zoos die from such maladies. Elephants in the wild walk more than thirty miles a day. They are built to walk, run, swim, and dig. Zoos restrict elephant’s ability to move and stay healthy.
While an elephant’s natural lifespan is 70-80 years, elephants in zoos live an average of 34 years. Jenny is 32. If Jenny is allowed to retire to a sanctuary, she could have many happy years ahead of her. If not, she is doomed to a short, unhappy and unwell life in the zoo. The proposed 4 acre habitat won't be built for more than two years and is not large enough to significantly improve Jenny’s life.
Jenny deserves more space NOW!
The planned habitat construction is not in Jenny’s interests either. She is stressed by loud noises, such as from construction and motorized vehicles. When stressed, she becomes severely depressed and has been known to self-mutilate. The Zoo has responded to Jenny’s unmet needs in past by drugging her. Jenny is being drugged to restrain, not treat her. The USDA had to once step in to get Jenny off a powerful chemical restraint that the Zoo had her on for over 5 years.
Please help Jenny to retire to the 300 acre natural habitat, The Elephant Sanctuary, which specializes in rehabilitating and healing troubled elephants like Jenny.
