Without seeing it, it is very hard to tell what it may be. It could be a burn, but corys are usually not shy enough to get behind a heater and hide that long....

yes, peat moss. you need to put it into an old nylon, or something like that, and put it into the filter. Beware; it will turn your water a tea-like colour....
