Even with short to short breedings, you will still average only 50% short since homozygous for shortness usually die in-utero or shortly after birth. However if you stick to the curly to curly and the homozygous to straight, you will limit your straight coats quite a lot, which is a good thing since we don't want to add to the numbers of "ordinary looking" cats that need homes. People looking for designer breeds usually want something different and are less likely to be the same people that will want a cat without very defining features like the curled coats or the short legs or hairlessness, curled ears, or whatever other special feature you see in these designer cat breeds. So by trying to limit
the number of kittens that are born without at least one defining quality, we are not taking homes from the other breeds or non-breeds out there.
Unfortunately we can't expect 100% of our lambkins to be both short and curly coated, but we can work very hard towards the kittens have at least one of the two mutations. I've planned this year's breedings with this in mind and should have at least 85% to 90% of the kittens be curly and at least 50% short legged as well. We may even get lucky and produce the first homozygous short and curly baby. Last year I had one homozygous for curly non-standard... this year I'm hoping for a standard.

Hi Sandi-I have actually not had too hard a time placing my straight Selkirks as pets. The girl I used with my first litter is a curly to curly cat. I also bred her to a curly and kept one of her daughters. She is an extremely cobby girl with rather short legs of her own, so hopefully all the kittens will either have the Munchkin legs, or at least shorter than normal Selkirk legs. I am sure I will have a ton of questions for you in the near future. I am so excited. Patty
