Hi Sandi-I have actually not had too hard a time placing my straight Selkirks as pets.  The girl I used with my first litter is a curly to curly cat.  I also bred her to a curly and kept one of her daughters.  She is an extremely cobby girl with rather short legs of her own, so hopefully all the kittens will either have the Munchkin legs, or at least shorter than normal Selkirk legs.  I am sure I will have a ton of questions for you in the near future.  I am so excited.  Patty

Congratulations Patty!  Lambkins are so wonderful.  One of my girls just had three babies on Easter... our first lambkins of this year.  We got a nice short boy and two long legged girls... all curly and very pretty.

Have you made any plans for what to do with the long legged straight coats?   These will be the most difficult to find homes for since they will most closely resemble either domestics or very pet quality persian/brit type.  I'm trying very hard to get as few of these as possible this year by using mostly homozgous with my munchkins and breeding curly to curly as much as possible.  Even so, there is always the possibility of the odd one or two that does not display either the short legs or the curls in any litter you breed without a homozygous parent.  It happened to me with two kittens last year and they are hardest to place.

Sandi

OK so my Munchkin male and my Selkirk female finally got busy and we are expecting my first litter of Lambkins on 4/8/8.  She is sooo pregnant.  She is a good mom and lets me handle the babies immediately, so pictures will be taken the moment they arrive!!!!!  Patty

I can't believe that it is almost time for them to go home!  Brandon is leaving April 1st after his next round of shots and Kayla is leaving at the end of April!  I've really grown to love these two.  Brandon is in the first 4  pictures and Kayla is the one with Kianna by the window and on the computer.  She was helping Mandy play Monopoly!

Kaidyn, Mandy (my God Daughter) and I went to the park today.  Kaidyn seemed to have fun climbing trees and running around!  I can't wait for it to get warmer so we can go to the big park!

Kaidyn and Kianna turned 1 year old today!  I guess they aren't kittens anymore!  I can't believe that it was a year ago that 3 small kittens were born on my bed.  They were so tiny and sweet and now they are all grown up.  Kaidyn isn't little anymore at all!  In fact, he is a 12 lbs cat now who still loves me like he did as a kitten.  Kianna is more independent and was even as a baby!  It's amazing how quickly they grow!  happy Birthday, my babies!

LOL!  Not my snake!  Just living in my apartment!  Actually, I just talked to the landlord and it is on it's way to rescue right now.  I'm helping get the cats.  Since no one seems to want them, and I'm unwilling to risk the health of my cats, it looks like they will have to go to the shelter.  The good news is, we have a wonderful shelter, and even though it is a kill shelter, they prefer foster and shipping out of state or to rescues than to kill the animals.  I used to volenteer there and it is a great shelter.  Let's hope they will be fine.

I knew Kaidyn was a big boy, but I did not realize just HOW big he was until  took these pictures!  Mew is 25 LBS!  I think Kaidyn and I are going to the feed store so I can weigh his big butt!  Kaidyn won't be a year old until March 17th!  Anyone know how big this boy will get?  Dad was huge!  When do Bengals stop growing?

Chanda,
I'm your snake girl - but I am in Texas :)

It is fine to not eat for weeks, it just needs to stay warm. Room temp is fine, but ideally not below 70.  I'll see if I can find you a snake rescue in IN and email you back.

an abandoned snake in it. (I think it is a python) I took some food
and litter to the cats, and am thinking I should take a mouse to the
snake, but I wanted to post this in hopes that someone might be able
to take one of the animals. The cats are a black and white adult and
a gray smaller cat or kitten who was hiding when I was there. The
black and white is very friendly. The landlord wants to take the cats
to the shelter and has no clue what to do about the snake. I'm in
Lafayette IN.

Kimiko is a real sweetie, when she wants to be!  She's slowly training me and even woke me up this morning to feed her AT 5:30 am!   It's not when she woke me up though, it's how!  First she started playing with my feet, when that didn't work, she bit my butt!  After being fed and playing for a little bit, I decided I was getting up!  So Kaidyn and Kianna went in the bedroom and Kimiko and I came to the living room.  Wouldn't you know it...  (See pictures)

Yep, she's a Bengals alright!

Hey everyone!  Kimiko is home :)  We had a good trip back.  She sat in her carrier and played with my camera string the whole way.  Right now she is napping on my bed and I'm about to join her!  LOL!  I was so excited last night, I didn't sleep at all!  I will take some more pictures when we wake up.  These are from the trip back.

The pictures are in an album called Chanda's  Kimiko for Bengal's L for everyone else, the are attached.  If anyone is on digest and can't see them, e mail me and I will send them to you!

I have to thank Merrilee from Valare Bengals for this beautiful and wonderful girl!  3 1/2 hours later she has already wrapped her paws around my heart and my husband's heart!

Well, today is the day!  I'm off to get Kimiko here in just a few minutes.  I'll send pictures a little later today (create album for Bengals-L) It's going to be a long day.  She's aprox, 2 1/2 hours away (and we are meeting half way!)  I hope she'll do ok with this long of a trip.  I have food, water and litter ready for her as well as a carrier.  I was thinking about taking the harness so she could take turns in the carrier and my lap (I'm not driving!) but I don't think it will fit her.

I'm so excited!  In a few hours, I will finally have the Snow Bengal I've dreamed of!

The kittens go in for their first round of shots tomorrow.  My Siamese is due for his yearly and Kianna is due in 2 weeks.  My vet gives discounts with multi cats, so everyone is going tomorrow!  This should be fun since I only have 1 carrier and a larger cage for Mew (he's a BIG cat!)  I'm hoping Kianna will be ok in with the kittens.  She seems to like them, but if not, then she is also harness trained and loves going for rides,

My question is, is it ok for a female in heat to get her shots?  Kianna is FINALLY in heat, but it's only her second heat cycle and I was told to wait until her 3rd.  She'll get a Feline Leukemia  shot since she will be visiting another cattery when she is bred, but I will never do the FIV shot with them.  She'll also get rabies and Destemper.  Is there anything else she needs to be protected while being bred?  I know she'll be safe, since she came from this cattery, but I want to make sure she has everything she needs.  Also, she turns 1 year March 17th.  Do I need to wait longer to breed her or is it ok to breed a 1 year old?

Any tests the 8 week old kittens should have ran at this stage?  When they got weening diarrhea at 5 weeks, a fecal was ran and negative then.  I guess I should mention that everyone but Mew is a Bengal that is going.  Mew is a Siamese.  Also, any tips to make Mew less stressed?  He freaks out in the car, the cage and the vet's office!

Oh, Chanda, I am so incredibly sorry. I know words fall short of comforting the heart at times like these, but as humans we are so limited in our ability to ease another's grief.

I went to the video & couldn't watch it without tears for such a beautiful baby who's life was cut too short through this horrible tragedy. Please know that as breeders we each have a place in our hearts where we hold memories of special babies that we feel that somehow we just didn't do enough for & through our error they were lost.

Thank you for sharing this so that others might become more aware of this danger. Like you, I am horrified EVERY time I see one of those "cute" pictures of a cat in a dryer ... I don't think they're cute, I cringe & think what a horrible thing to teach your purrkid! You wouldn't allow your human child in there, so why the cat? Maybe Takarra's message will bring awareness to those who just don't think.

I am so sorry for your loss & your grief, Chanda. :-(

A lot can change in 1 year, especially when that year is sad and lonely and filled with regret.  I've dreaded this day for the past 364 days, but I knew sooner or later, I would have to face it, and the memories that come with good-bye.  I write this as a way of honoring Takarra's memory and also to remind each and every person who reads this of a very real danger that awaits each of your cats inside their safe and loving home: the dryer.

Takarra was more than a cat to me.  She was my first Bengal and my loving companion.  I loved her like she was my child, and some days it's harder than others to pull out that memory.  Her story, though rather long and sad, has the potential to save lives if heard though, so I will tell it again and again each year on both her birthday and the anniversary of her death until every single person gets in the habit of looking inside their dryer before starting it to make sure their babies are safe.

I'll never forget the day last year that we lost her.  It was cold and raining ice.  It was also my niece's birthday party.  I was sticky and needed a long hot bath while my clothes dried.  I stopped to toss the clothes in the dryer, and my back was turned only for a few minutes, but just long enough for Takarra to crawl, unseen inside the dryer,  I turned around, thinking Takarra was still sleeping on the cat tree in the other room, and looked to make sure both Gemini and Mew were on the bed.  I got in the shower and never gave a second thought to if Takarra was really on the cat tree or not.  My only concern was using every last drop of hot water that I could.

When I got out, I knew something didn't feel right, but I wasn't sure what.  I looked around and noticed Takarra wasn't around.  I called out to her several times and looked everywhere I could think of.  I figured she must have fallen asleep somewhere and didn't want to get up for my call.  She had been spayed only a few days before and I didn't think she was feeling too good.  I decided to leave her be and fold the clothes.  It was when I opened the dryer door, that I found the body of my beloved angel.  I can't express what went through my head as I held her and my friend drove us to the vet.  I was hysterical and couldn't stop telling her lifeless body how sorry I was and how I didn't mean for this to happen.    The roads were so bad that night, that it was a miracle that we made it to the emergency vet alive ourselves.  It was too late for Takarra, but I knew her body deserved a proper cremation.

I went home and laid awake crying myself to sleep that night.  My Takarra was gone and I knew she'd never be coming home.  I held and cuddled Mew and Gemini and told them how much I loved them and that I never meant to take away their Takarra.  They seemed to understand that Mommy was hurting, but it would take a few days for them to understand that Takarra was gone and could never come home.  Mew often sat by the door and meowed while Gemini withdrew into herself and you could see she was depressed and missed her Takarra.  We lost Gemini less than 2 months later.  I believe she wanted to be with the Bengal she thought of as a daughter and often nursed and bathed as a kitten.  I also believe that they are together again and as happy as two cats can be at the rainbow bridge.

It's been a hard year for me.  I've accepted my place in Takarra's fate and I believe that the 7 short months of her life were lived to tell others of this innocent danger that is so often overlooked by so many.  Recently, on several cattery web pages, I've seen pictures of cats laying on or in dryers-   I know you took these pictures in good fun, but I also remember the horror of when I found my Takarra dead inside my dryer.   Each time I've seen one of these pictures, I've cried for my baby girl who left way too early, but I've also cried because I couldn't help but think that you were encouraging your cats to develop a deadly habit.  One you may have once thought would make a cute moment or one you may have laughed at.  I assure you, the danger is real.  Cats love warm spaces and soft clothes.  Many Bengals love water and would not  be phased by wet clothing, even if tossed on top of them.  It's our jobs as both owners and for those who breed, breeders, to protect the lives of our cats.  We give them the best food, litter, toys and vet care that money can buy.  We often love them as if they are our children.  Many of our cats have more toys than some kids even.  We spoil our pets rotten because they give us a reason to smile each day even when life seems at the worst.  Now I ask that we give them 1 more thing.  It won't cost a penny, just 30 seconds of our time to bend over and look inside the dryer to make sure our beloved cats are all safe before we hit a button that could end their lives.  Surely our cats are worth 30 seconds of our time?  Please, don't let Takarra's fate be the fate of your cats.

Here is a YouTube video I made in honor of my beloved Takarra.  I hope everyone will watch it and leave a comment so I know her message is out there and that something is being done to save innocent lives from horrible deaths.  Deaths far worse than dying in a pet shelter, deaths that can be prevented with just 30 seconds of your time.

I wrote this last year after my car broke down.  I thought everyone might get a laugh out of it.  The offer to trade my husband is still open!  I will trade him for either a Blue Point Siamese or a Blue Marble Bengal!  LOL!  I can't trade the car, I sent it to the junk yard!

1) Cats never break down on you!
2) Cats don't cost a $40 tow truck ride home!
3) To get a cat's motor going, all it takes is a few pets here and there.  Cats never refuse to start!
4) $1000 will buy you a great purebred cat that will last 15-20 years.  Try to buy a car for that price and it will be 15-20 years old!
5) Cats don't need warmed up on a cold winter morning, they warm you up!
6) The most expensive vet is still cheaper than the cheaper than the cheapest machanic!  Cats never need new parts either!
7) A good bag of cat food will cost $25 and last my cats 2 months.  A good gallon of gas costs at least $2.00 and will barely last 20 miles.
20 lbs bag of food + $25 = 2 months.
20 gallon gas tank+$40 = a week and a half
Cats are a better deal!
8) You never have to buy insurance for your cats.
9) Cars need to get oil changes and go through car washes, cats only need litter changes and they wash themselves!  $ 30 for oil change.  $10 bag of cat litter.  Cats win again!
10) You'll never go to jail for petting your cat drunk, you'll never be in a fatal cat wreck and no one will ever reposses your cat!
I wonder if I can trade the car in for a nice brand new cat?  Better yet, I'll throw in the husband and make it 2 cats!

I've had a few things published here and there, but nothing major since high school (11 years ago!)   It was mostly poetry, but I had them in some pretty big name magazines.  I know one of my poems was in a well known at the time racing magazine.  I've also had a few poems in books of poetry collections. To be honest, I had all but forgotten I had sent this in! I'll have to see if I can find my "reasons cats are better than cars" list that I did last year when my car broke down and send it in.  Thank you guys, I'm happy you liked it.  It was something silly I wrote a few years ago and stashed away.

This is a list I put together a long time ago.  I sent it in as a response to "how mant dogs does it take to change a lightbulb.  I never thought www.petplace.com would put it in a news letter!  I'm excited!

How Many Cats does it Take to Change a Light Bulb?

Hi Chanda Healton,

We really had a fun article a few weeks ago called “How Many Dogs Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb?” We had some amusing responses from cat lovers and this was our favorite.

Chanda Healton wrote, "I really enjoyed the cat"s perspective on dogs and light bulbs. Here is my own list.  How many CATS does it take to change a light bulb?"

We hope you enjoy it.

Kaidyn didn't want to come in!  he rolled around and jumped and had a great time.  He also gave me some great pictures, so I'm splitting them into 3 e-mails since there are so many.  Kaidyn says please don't laugh at his pink harness!  He has outgrown his and the cheap mom makes him wear the one Kianna is too small for!
