Here's a little trick for loading a cat in a carrier (one person style). Throw a
thin towel on the floor the night before. Maybe put a bit of catnip in it. You
can play with the cat a little bit by tossing it over it's head so it can play
underneath.

The next day, do the same, then roll the cat tighter in the towel wo he can't
get out. He can't see the carrier plus his claws are stashed away. Then put him
in. You can leave the towel inside with him. Works for me.

Our little semi-feral cat nearly always has her tongue hanging out, to one degree or the other. She has bad teeth which may be part of it. But our dearly departed Bitsy also started doing it as he got to be a senior citizen. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

Does this cat usually go outside to go to the bathroom and maybe is used to that and just waits til it is let outside. It just couldn't hold it any longer and was pissed ( non pun intended ) LOL!

Also it could be upset over the older female cat in the house that doesn't like to share its territory with this new fuzzy friend. He might be marking his territory by urinating to say to the other cat- " hey- this is my area leave me alone!"

Give original Dawn a try.  It is gentle enough for kittens and is used for
removing oil sludge from seals and other unfortunate creature victims of oil
spills.  You might try olive oil  - rubbing it thoroughly into the skin for
help in the bare areas.

She may be allergic to fleas or have mites.  The Dawn is good to get rid of
the fleas.  Mites need medication.  Check out these catalogs:  Dr.'s Foster
and Smith, Pigeon Supply Store and there is another one I can't think of
now that someone else recomended on the group for some mite medicine.  There
might be a kit in these cataloges where you can send a skin scraping sample
(like a Q-Tip) directly to a lab and see what you find out.  Hope you and
kitty will be on the way to quick relief soon!

yesterday i checked the snow outside my window to see if anybody tried getting into the "empty" building next door---i "only' saw animal tracks. this morning my worst fear come true---paw prints to the window outside a shared roof from steps next door. back in 2007 i found a cat right outside, the day after i caught another cat that i was feeding for months, and finally caught cause it had a torn leg.

the lowlifes who lived next door had lots of money for booze and drugs---but probably never fed any pets they had, and now maybe one of them they might have left behind went right up to the window where the lowlife owners lived?

i'll put food out, try to see what kind of animal is about, if a cat i'll go through major ordeal of catching it and taking it to crowded shelter, though i don't have anybody who can help me with this and i live on a limited income.

most of my neighbors are drunks, addicts, welfare moms, other bums; the apartment building next door has had a bad reputation for decades, and went "empty" in march cause of wall street type loan, though some of the lowlifes who lived there go in and out and i have to worry about the place catching fire.

i'm not at all ashamed to say i have a great deal of pity for homeless cats and dogs, and none for my homeless ex-neighbors; living around such careless, worthless, people that others, like myself, have to clean up after, really sucks the life out of a person.

We have always had multiple cats and I have been allergic to a few.  It's on a cat by cat basis.

Sometimes it's a shorter-haired cat rather than the long hair fluffy one that sets my eyes and nose off.
So yes, it's possible to be allergic to some cats and not all cats.

It's  a mild allergy (nothing serious such as swollen eyes or throat) so I just live with it.

That's Dora when I'm trying to put her in the carrier, too. The
trick I have found worked for me is to hold both front legs in one
hand, both back legs in the other hand, and put her in, rear first
and place her on her side. I let go of the hind legs, then slam the
door as I jerk my other hand out. She didn't have time to get up and
out before the carrier was closed.

Interesting. Could there be something else in the house that
everyone is allergic to, and you are reacting to, also? I wonder
what you touched with your hand, then touched your forehead. Do they
smoke? Is it possible it's a cleaner they use in their house? Just
something to think about, because it might be something other than the cats.

I don't think it matters where you live. You may always find horrible people who
just don't CARE about their animals. I lived in the San Francisco bay area all
my life, in middle class suberbs. I've only retiired to Oklahoma the last 5
years. Our previous next door neighbors had tons of cats. All from one nice
little female kitty, named Meow-Meow Kitty, whom they NEVER had spayed. God only
knows where some of her kittens ended up...anyway, they would ALWAYS forget to
feed or water them. SERIOUSLY! She would sneak into our kitchen just STARVING,
and eat Spikes food. Once I overheard friends of the neighbors commenting on
the cats water dish..saying "where's their water? This is all scummy" Their
male cats (never nuetered) would roam the streets attacking other cats,
searching for food, etc. We fed meow-Meow Kitty, but she wouldn't let any of
her offspring come into our yard! Seriously, she wouldn't! She & Spike would
sit in the sunshine together, and she would save him from getting his butt
kicked from the other cats.

If they didn't spay them, I KNOW those poor cats never had any shots!

I would tell the nighbors "hey, your cats need feeding, or, did u feed them
yet?" Once one of their male cats tore a hole in our screen, got into the house,
and chased poor Spike around the house. It was horrible! ( He was a big mean
kitty) We tried to make them buy us a new screen, but they refused...giving us
a few bucks to repair it.

Those people were horrible, and being in a nice neighborhood didn't make any
difference.

Well, the cat might have a slightly longer than normal tongue, might
have "lazy" tongue muscles, or might think he looks more handsome
that way. I have never heard of a cat problem that causes this.

This is a link to the Association of Veterinary Medicine regarding the
transmission of H1N1 from people to cats, and treatment when cats contract H1N1:

http://www.avma.org/public_health/influenza/new_virus/new_flu_virus_faq_veterina\
rians.asp

It says that the supply of antiviral meds for fighting the disease once a cat
has contracted H1N1 is being guarded for use in humans, so I going to be extra
careful about exposure of my pets to people right now, as some cats have died.

An article in the NY Times a month or two ago said the H1N1 virus can live for a
couple of days on objects touched by someone with the H1N1 virus, like door,
shopping carts, etc., so wash hands, and carry a disinfectant to sanitize hands
frequently.

Yes, I've always been allergic to cats (doesn't say much for my sanity does
it?) and some bother me much more than others. The long hairs usually tend
to be worse. My older cat is a medium length hair tabby and when I pet him I
get itchy all over and my sinuses get stuffy. I try to pet him from a
distance. Good thing he's not a lap cat. My other two cats - the Bengals -
don't bother me at all and I can rub my face right in their fur with no
reaction.

Before taking the cats, I would do more visiting with them to make sure.

I've had three shorthaired cats for several years (though only two at a
time). Then just one cat for the last 1.5 years. And now cat-free for a
month. I was thinking of adopting another cat or two. I was at someone's
house with 2 older longhaired cats (both with lion shave) for about 30-45
minutes. They're up for adoption because the owner and baby are allergic
(and home too chaotic for cats). When I left, I noticed a welt on my
forehead. Went away after an hour. Is it possible to be allergic to some
cats but not others? Does furlength have
anything to do with it? Since I wasn't really sensitive before, and assuming
it was from the cats, might it be a passing thing?

You're welcome. That's funny.

I've always been fond of chihuahua dogs, even the very small ones, and as long
as treated like dogs I think they socialize well, from my admittedly limited
experience. I've not ever heard of a house cat do the "prey chatter" on seeing
one!

My son's roommate posted this on my Facebook page, thinking one of my kitties might like one for Christmas - I love it!

Indeed it can, and water toxicity is common enough that most organizers of long
distance charity runs and the like have learned to provide EMTs who are trained
and equipped for its treatment.

I'm actually going somewhere with this comment. The effects of water poisoning
are very similar to gastrointestinal diseases in both humans and animals (e.g.
cholera), which weaken by throwing off the body's electrolyte imbalance.

A young lady at work was concerned because her cat, Madeline, had diarrhea for
the last "two or three days." I convinced her that this was, if not an
emergency case, at least an urgent care case and probably should not wait over
the weekend. I'm pleased to report at least a tentative successful outcome,
with subcutaneous electrolytes and antibiotics. "My vet agreed to see me right
away, I had no idea it was that serious," she said.

Alas, my advice failed to impress her to the point of an offer of a dinner date,
although I provided her ample opportunity to suggest such a thing. I'd imagine
that she was so relieved at Madeline's condition that she simply forgot. Ah,
well. Next time.

Did you also know water is toxic? It is if you drink too much. A
radio station had a "hold your wii" contest. The winner that could
drink the most water without going to the bathroom won a Wii
game. One lady ended up in the hospital, another one died.

I can think of two possibilities.

They're new to each other. Supervise when they're together until they can
figure each other out. 8 months is young for a human, and 2 months is only
marginally enough time to give a cat to get used to a baby.

Secondly, toddlers can be rough on cats. Pulled tails, chewed ears and so forth
until they reach an accommodation. If this is the case your daughter might get
a scratch or two but with a bit of assistance from you - ' see how soft her fur
is, she likes being petted, she doesn't like her tail pulled" and so forth she
will figure it out pretty quickly with no lasting harm.

Pets are great for even very young children, and kids are great for pets.
Please do not let this minor setback dissuade you from introducing your daughter
to the joys of pet ownership at a young age.

8 months old, we've had him for 2. He loves to sit atop the sofa and attack my
toddler about the head nad face as she walks by. If I leave the room, he
attacks my daughter. NEVER does it while I'm in the room.

Snuggler is like a BIG 15# sack of potatoes - I do pick her up like a baby
& she doesn't mind.  BONGO does(growl, whine...) Tortie will tolerate it
sometimes.
My problem is letting them down - SNugg is a big lug - oof!

It all depends on the cat.  We've had cats forever, and lugging them around the house can be a real treat for them.  Several I have been able to sling over my shoulder and they purr like crazy in my ear as I wander around with them.   You can pat them on the butt for extra fun.

Carrying baby-style works for some cats but not all.

But one thing's for sure:  when it's time to go down, they are going down, and if you aren't quick enough to let them down, you may get a claw or two in your arms.
