I'm leaving in a couple of days to go out of town. I praise God that my neighbor takes care of my cats well. Still makes me think. When I was 10 years old, I had the responsibility of feeding a friend of my grandfather's cats. He was also our neighbor. Twice a day I was there, and I would play with them. I did this for all my growing up years.

aw Karen, i am so sorry for your loss! it's always terrible to lose
our furkids, but especially so when it could and should have been
avoided, when it happened through no fault of yours! i just googled
vetsulin and the FDA warnings are all over the place... too late for
you, alas, but at least maybe it will prevent the same tragedy from
happening to others.

Laura, I thought all drs. knew that cats can get heartworms too. Our vet put
both our cats on preventive meds a few years ago for that and told us that cats
can get heartworms too. So i figured all vets would know.
Sure hope everything goes alright with Buddy.

Is your cat fixed. Usually this is something when they do to mark territory. It can be reduced if the cat is neutered or spayed. You need to consult your vet, usually its a medical issue that had to be addressed and treated by a veterarian. Connie

I have very sad news. I know that I have not been on the site lately. That is because we were on vacation for 1 month. When we arrived home, the people responsible for our cats, did not care for them. Our NEUMAN was found dead on the floor. He had been left there about 1 week. Aour 2 little Persians, Willow and Andy were both in critical condition. The others faired slightly better, but all needed much attention to heal. This was honestly one of the worst things that ever happened in my life of 64 years. It certainly took away from our vacation of a lifetime. This happened at the end of September, and I really have not been able to even discuss it until now.

If you don't mind buying the special formula milk and look on it as a "treat" to supplement Bella's ordinary diet, it shouldn't do her any harm.

Of course, you shouldn't substitute milk for water.  They should always have plenty of fresh, clean water available no matter what their age or preferences.  Depending on their diet and the climate, they may drink a lot or very little water, but it should always be there.  You should also keep a weather eye on how much water they drink as well.  What is "normal" will vary depending on how much liquid they get from their food and the temperature, but unusual changes not otherwise explainable can be an early warning sign of illness.

Just wondering, is milk good for your cat or is water just as good? My 10 month old kitty Bella likes her Whiskas cat milk and it is a lot creamier than the normal lactose free milk and because the pack is purple I do not accidentally put it on my weet bix! Because it is so hot here if she leaves it in the bowl a few hours it turns to yoghurt.. My other cat Tabitha prefers just to drink water out of the tap.

Also I have a cat gallery on my website for cardmakers and I would love to see some pics of everyone's cats. To upload a pic you just need to click on Gallery then create a login and put your pic in the cat gallery plus a couple of lines about your cat.

That is beyond horrible, and a worst nightmare of anybody who leaves their pets
in the care of others, but if truly NEGLIGENCE then that is unforgivable,
unconscionable, and just tragic.

I would absolutely advocate legal action, not so much to receive a settlement
since nothing will bring your beloved pet back, but maybe a large sum of money
to be donated to an animal shelter????

I can't imagine what excuse your cat feeder could offer that would be at all
acceptable- emergencies come up but they could have found a back-up.

Very sorry for your loss, what an unimaginably tragic return from a trip, to
find you beloved pet like that.

sincere regrets

I'm in the middle of an awful time of it here with a wonderful cat who has
heartworm. I've found lots of information on the web, most of it very
discouraging, but haven't found anyone who has a cat with the same problem.
Even my vets are shaking their heads, since they never have cases of feline
heartworm, so together we're trying to figure out what to do.

Buddy is around 4 years old and came to me from a foster home as part of a
litter of kittens born in a parking lot. He had an episode of fever and
vomiting shortly after I got him, which my vet diagnosed as bartonella. He was
treated with Zithromax and has been well and spunky ever since, although he has
always been a "throw-upper" and also has a very slight heart murmur.

About a week and a half ago I noticed Buddy was hiding and crouching behind a
chair, and having violent dry heaves where only a little spit would come up. I
watched him, and he moped around or lay on my bed looking uncomfortable. I
brought him to the vet and sure enough he had almost a 105 degree fever.
Furthermore, he had lost 1 1/2 pounds since his well cat visit one month earlier
(yes, I thought he was looking streamlined; he's a big cat). The vet thought he
wasn't moving air well -- something I hadn't noticed. A chest x-ray showed a
patchy asthmatic pattern. There were no other signs of illness so they did
blood and urine tests. Everything came back beautiful - and there were
virtually no tests left undone.

Imagine our surprise however when he came back positive for heartworm! I did
bring him home with some antibiotics, some heartworm preventative (he has a
"sister") and some prednisone for the inflammation of the lungs. He actually
took a turn for the worse -- wouldn't eat, lay by his bowl, took no interest in
the chickens outside, seemed very weak and began throwing up green bile. When I
picked him up to bring him back to the vet, his breathing was noisy.

The vet thought the prednisone might be taxing his heart and took him off it.
He went onto Lasix (diuretic), Terbutaline (bronco-dilator), and Carafate (an
ulcer drug). He began to perk up, eat and keep it down, groom himself, purr and
fawn, carry his tail upright and open those big green eyes.

Tomorrow he goes for his re-check. He is still throwing up a bit (eats grass)
but he's about 90% recovered. A cardiac ultrasound ($$$) will tell the story --
live worms, dead worms, no worms left or what. You can't give meds to kill the
worms, as they're extremely toxic to cats. A dead worm may start a severe
reaction as it passes out of the body, even kill him, so if there's any there,
we need to beware.

Meanwhile I am warning everyone -- do NOT make the mistake of thinking only dogs
get heartworm -- get your cat on preventative meds too. Buddy hates me for all
these meds, but he's greatly improved. We will see what the vet says tomorrow
morning. Has anyone been through this with their cat, with either good or bad
result?? I feel as if I am in a vacuum here, so little is known about what's
happening. Thanks.

Hi Gloria,

It's good your cat is losing weight. We have one cat who weighs much more
than yours! So, not sure why the panic from the vet on 17lbs?
Our one kitty, Luka weighs 21.5 lbs now, was 24 lbs last year, he
originally had Fatty Liver Disease, we had to tube feed him from a tube
surgically
put into his neck. We fed him for 2 mos like this and it was so stressful
and hard on him and us. But we saved his life.
So he had dropped a lot of weight when he was sick and tube fed, then
recovered, tube came out and he gained a bunch of weight soon after.
But we are happy he is alive and the weight is something we try to work
on. It has been slow going.
Your 17lb cat sounds like not a big deal? Or is she a petite girl?
The amount of food she is getting seems So small! I am shocked. This
amount is okay with the vet?

I have heard of giving them only 1/4cup of dry food twice daily for weight
loss but never only 1 TB? Our Luka would go crazy, he already has an issue
with food, always hungry. But we have him on light food now.

I just wonder if your girl kitty is getting enough food overall?

Our vet said some cats can weigh more than the average 10-12 lbs, if they
have larger bones/frames..

Let me know your thoughts on this?

Oh my, that was the most horrible thing I had ever heard of.  May God be with
you and heal you of your ordeal.  I understand not being able to discuss it
until now.  But getting stuff off your chest as soon as possible is a great
healing tool.  Trust me I know.

In November 2006 I lost my mother.  That was really hard, but then in February
2007 just 3 months after losing my mother I lost my oldest brother.  That was a
very devastating time for me until I started e-mailing a friend of mine and
started telling him my feelings about what happened and believe it or not he was
able to get me through my losses without me losing my mind.  I was also able to
help him as well because he had just lost his son a few months pryor.  So if you
can open up to someone else it does get you through it much better and quicker.

Enough of me.  I hope you can find peace in what you have gone through.  If you
need a friend (even though you don't know who I am) to talk to please feel free
to e-mail me personally anytime you want to.  I too would be devasted to lose
any of my cats.  I am so sorry and will be praying for you.

Hope to be your friend,

Gloria

I once took the Mitten 3.5 hours north to a sales meeting, staying 3 nights.

Of course he went the whole way until taking a dump in the traveling litter box 5 minutes from the destination.  :-(
The windows were cracked the rest of the way, with AC on!

When we got there he managed to find his way into the furnace of the resort.

Like maybe feed them outside the mobile home park. A walk of a couple of blocks

Well, as I understand it, real milk is *not* good for cats, but the
specially formulated cat milk is just fine for them. There is no
need to leave out enough so it solidifies, either. Cats will drink
water if they need it.

Since you're consulting a vet, perhaps you haven't looked at the calorie chart
but I can't help wondering what brand your vet recommended to you and whether he
suggested a change in brand or merely cutting back on the amount you're feeding.
Does he mention "calories" at all or just to cut back?

As mentioned, my shock was finding that the grain free had more calories than
the "carb heavy" food Pearl's former owner was giving her.

BTW, I love kidneys, beef tongue and liver but don't eat too much as there is a
controversy on the healthfullness of same. Of course there's a controversy on
everything from eggs and milk and red meat to fish (because of mercury content)
good carbs vs. bad carbs and now soy, which some doctors will tell you is a
wonderful substitute for dairy, while otheres warn against it.

At 73 years of age, I've gotten to the point where I figure I'll just eat what
the heck I want and let the next generation figure it all out, although I have
switched to soy products and find it very satisfying. Taste good and fewer
calories.

My own doctor even told me she warns her asian clients against eating too much
fish, because the the murcury content and here I was trying to include more fish
in my diet. If we have this much trouble trying to figure out our own diets,
what chance do our poor pets have when no two doctors (or vets) can agree?

definition for that term, it's clean, fresh and properly handled non-muscle
meat. Kidneys, liver, brains, heart, tongue - all good stuff for our cats, as
well as for the few of us still out there who don't shy away from anything that
isn't a steak.

on the pounds. I've been cutting Blackie down and trying to wean her off the
"carbs" for the past year or so, under a vet's direction. Since too-rapid
weight loss can lead to liver disease I'd strongly recommend veterinary
supervision in trimming down a tubby cat.

What's amazing to me is the calories in some cat foods. When I decided I should
try the grain free, I found the particular one I chose was over 500 calories per
cup. People will tell you that carbs pack on the pounds but, if you look at the
charts, you'll see that many foods that have rice, and other grains, actually
have fewer calories than some of the grain free foods.

I think that's because, if they use BROWN rice, which is considered one of the
"good" carbs as opposed to the bad carbs, such as white rice which is considered
bad and viewed as one of the carbs that will make one gain weight.

Pearl's former owner was giving her Friskies Feline Favorites which is 426
calories per cup. I thought a "grain free" would help her lose weight and was
shock to find that the one I chose, Wellness "Core" has a whopping 536 calories
per cup so I looked at Wellness "Healthy Weight" and it still has more than the
Friskies Feline Favorites at 450 calories per cup.

No wonder there are so many overweight cats out there when even a "weight
control" food, depending on the brand, may have more calories than a particular
cat needs. Ie:

Dry Cat Foods - Calories per 8 oz cup

Wellness "Core" 536 calories per cup

Wellness "Healthy Weight" 450 calories per cup

Friskies Feline Favorite 426 cal per cup

Iam's Proactive Health 260 cal per cup

I believe Iam's Proactive Health is fairly new as it is not listed on the charts
on the Pet Obesity Prevention site.

Curious if you've figured out how many calories Bongo is getting now as opposed
to the 190 he should be getting.

As for a cat wheel, isn't there someone that knows someone that can build one at
a reasonable price? I'm still considering buying a treadmill for myself and see
if Pearl will use it. If I had more room, it wouldn't even be an issue.

The best part of having the charts to reference is that you don't have to reduce
the amount you feed your cat which may make him cranky. Just find a food with
fewer calories.

Oh, Priscilla, I am so sorry this happened to your cats but especially sad to hear about Neuman. What did the irresponsible persons say about the situation? They should  be very  ashamed of themselves for treating wee ones the way they did.
