Dear Dr. Kate,
What are Dewclaws?
Dewclaws are the toenails that grow from the rudimentary first digit (toe). It is positioned at the top of the paw on the inside of the leg. Although it’s most common to notice dewclaws on a dog’s front leg, some dogs have them on their rear legs, too.
Unlike regular claws that grip into the ground to help a dog run or walk better, dewclaws serve no purpose. That’s because a dewclaw is so high on a dog’s leg, it never touches the ground.
In the United States, many breeders choose to have a puppies dewclaws removed by a veterinarian early on. Usually it’s done just after birth, between 2 – 4 days of age. For many breeds, removal is necessary in order for the dog to be shown in AKC events.
However, in certain breeds such as the Great Pyrenees, double dewclaws are normally present on the rear paws, with single dewclaws on the front paws. Dewclaw removal is not performed in these breeds as they are included in the breed standard and required for the dog to be shown in AKC and other events.
For those dogs that have dewclaws as adults, owners should keep the nails short so that they don’t catch on anything and break, or grow too long and become imbedded in the pad. A broken or imbedded nail can be extremely painful for a dog and can cause infection.
