Attention Fellow Equestrians,

A few weeks ago I recieved a phone call from a very nice woman who found our group through our web site. The woman is a very active 83 year old woman who still rides her horse twice a week!!!!  She interested in writing a book about older equestrians and asked for my help in fiinding them.

She writes:

"I am writing a book with the working title of "Still Riding at 80," based on interviews with riders about that age in western Mass.  It will explore the decisons they have made, the strategies they have used to continue riding, and the psychological problems they have faced along the way.  The target audience is riders 60 and up, the period when they begin to wonder just how much longer they will be able--and wish--to pursue their sport.

I am looking for possible interviewees and am hoping you can help me.  If, possibly through your connection with the  GRHC, you know people over 70 who are still riding or have just given it up, I would appreciate contact information for them. "

So, if you are 70 or older  or if  know of anyone who fits the bill, please contact me at the e-mail and number above.  This sounds like a really exciting to me and I truly hope that when I reach my 70's and 80's that I will just like Helen and still riding and doing the things that I love!!!

Sincerely,

He wasn't barefoot all the time, just those three CTR's he did barefoot.  LInda's ride and Heather's ride were done the same year and I just hadn't put shoes back on from the winter (I pulled shoes that year, didn't do borium) and I don't remember why he was barefoot for the Brooks' ride.  I think my farrier was either late or that Ru had a problem with his shoes and I pulled them.  He had done the Fairhill 50 two weeks before that and had shoes on, although that ride could have been done barefoot.  Mostly fields and dirt trails.

My big bay Standardbred, Ru, did both Hidden Brook (Heather Bonneau's ride) and NE Morab (Linda LeVitre's ride) barefoot, oh, I also forgot that he did the October ride in Connecticut barefoot.  I can't remember the name of that ride, but it is an unforgetable one.  I must be brain dead now.  The pool, the food, breakfast sandwiches made on the grill.  Everyone knows this ride.  Now, towards the end of that ride, he was riding on the shoulder of the trails, but he wasn't sore afterwards. Trotted out sound.  Now I will say that this guy has size 3 feet in the front, 2's in the back and they are tough, solid feet.  No boots or sole packing, just barefoot.

Hi. I guess I can speak for Berit, somewhat, since I have been along on her barefoot ride since the beginning. I would like to clear up the Fort Valley connection. She has not gone back there on her barefoot horses. She competed there years ago on her gelding that had shoes. Berit lives in northern NJ where the trails have footing much like Fort Valley.

She has competed barefoot all over the northeast...Fairhill, MD, Biltmore, NJ Pine Barrens, VT-Moonlight & Justin Morgan, Maine and Ohio. Most of these rides were 50 mile endurance rides.

One of the horses had shoes for years and she decided to pull them. That horse took about 3 or 4 years till it could go barefoot anywhere. In the beginning Berit tried boots (I think we do have better choices of boots than 6 or 7 years ago.) but she found them to be cumbersome and usually caused problems. She threw them away. Her first barefoot rides were done in sandy south Jersey. That horse has over 1000 miles barefoot, both CTR and endurance.

Berits other horse never had shoes and his feet are huge and like steel. He has done a few 50s and Berit is hoping to do 75 and 100s on him. Certainly the wearing of the foot on that distance is something to stay aware of. However, she has seen her horses stay completely sound even when the wear on the foot would shock all the barefoot trimmers she has studied. None of the barefoot trimmers out there or perhaps very few have the experience of working with horses that do endurance mileage. Thus far her horses lameness has never been directly related to bare feet.

Berit feels very certain that bare feet allow you to figure out other things going wrong with the horse sooner than when they wear shoes. Foot growth (angles, more growth on one side, etc.), cracks, rings and hoof consistancy are great clues to muscle soreness, injury, immune system and nutritional issues, etc. Some things are not so easy to see, but if you keep studying the situation, you will hopefully figure out what to do...and the answer is not usually putting on a shoe.

As has been noted before, each horse is different and you there is no hard and fast rule. Riding barefoot is a choice and for some horses, it is the best thing you can do for them, even in our sport.

Was wondering if any of the NY ECTRA members could suggest some good places to camp and ride in NY state.  My sister lives in Penn Yan, NY and I live in the Northeast corner of CT and we would like to meet 1/2 way for a few days of camping and riding, Albany area is about midway.  We will have our daughters (then 6, 9, and 11) with us so trails that are easy to moderate would be best though all three girls are experienced trail riders.

We do plan to camp with tents and have the horses on picket lines unless there is a better option.

I know that this past summer many of you in NY stated that the DMV/Police were pulling over and fining alot of horse trailer.  Is that still a problem?  This trip isn't till next summer.

I am hearing stories about exceptional horses that have competed barefoot and no doubt they do exist.  Cavalletti won both the Florida 100 and New Jersey 100 barefoot.  But most horses could not do this without issues.  Many, however, could train and compete in boots and be barefoot for carefully picked rides.  Some simply need shoes.  And others need shoes with pads.

The point to consider is should our sport, ECTRA, accomodate all?  And I think the board is doing a good job trying to do this through different divisions to see how it will work out.

I think everyone should try conditioning a barefoot horse and competing in boots before passing on their opinon.  It just is not that easy!

Hi Patty:
I have one horse that completed the Mustang 50 completely barefoot and one
that has completed FITS 100 barefoot in the hind. Rita Swift had a horse
win the Biltmore 100 with only sole guard.
Berit has completed many 50s barefoot included the Fort Valley rides. I
have rode with her in the Green Lane CTR and you would never know the horses
does not have shoes. This was the horses first competition and completed in
great shape. She does not have e-mail or I am sure she would be active in
this discussion.

Hi Janet,
Thanks for the post! I was just about to ask if someone could list the
rides they have done barefoot, and this gives me a good idea which ones
to try. Have you done any multi-day or one day 50s barefoot, anyone, and
if so which ones?

Berit I think has 1000 miles of totally barefoot if I remember her getting
her or her horse's 1000 at the banquet a couple of years ago. I compete my
mare totally barefoot, she has close to 200 miles I think now. I just
pick
and choose what rides to do with her. We have done the Chesapeake 3 or 4
times, the Muckleratz, MD 25, the Foxcatcher and the Mustang/ Oh and she
got the Barefoot Award at the Canal 25.

I used to be the president of an not-for-profit SCUBA club that we incorporated to take advantage of the Not-For-Profit rules.  Yes, a not-for-profit is a business.  It just does not attempt to make a profit for the owners of the business.  Often, like ECTRA or my SCUBA club the intent is to promote the business's activites (CTR or SCUBA) and educate the public about our goals and activties.

Not-For-Profits can make money.  Take the American Red Cross.  They have a very large national budget and pay many, many full and part-time employees.  But the aim of the corporation is to benefit the public with its many programs  and services.

Not-For-Profit is a federal tax term that gives the corporation a non-taxable status in exchange for meeting the rules about benefiting the public not the owners.  If we have an accountant out there she or he could explain more of the details.

My husband still goes on about Bob delivering beer to trailers in his golf cart!
And the food was to die for...We were asking Patty if she's thinking of bringing
back that ride. Tough one to do barefoot from what I recall, but Carolyn did, so
it's doable.
Esther and I both came off our horses at the same time at the beginning of that
ride one year, deer spooked Hammer who was in the lead, he whirled, dumped me,
Pokey reacted to Ham, he whirled, dumped Esther. It happened so fast I don't
even remember falling, I just hit the ground with a thud. Ham started trotting
back to camp, so Pokey started following Ham, Esther screamed in her best
teacher voice POKEY,WHOA!! Pokey turned around and came back to Esther, so Ham
turned and followed Pokey back too. Damn horse would have left me there in the
leaves if it weren't for Pokey! We both limped our way through the rest of that
ride as I recall!!

This past year my gelding (never has had shoes on and in his first year)
did:

NJTRA Bunny Hop (25 miles but we did closer to 30 after getting lost)
NJTRA May 30
Brookfield 30 (NY)
Chesapeake 30 (MD)
Jersey Devil 30

Next year our first 3 rides are going to be 25/30 again and then if
we're up for it we'll be doing the NJTRA 50 in May. As I've said before
if it looks like we need to go to AHP I'll look into it in more detail;
but my hope is that he'll be able to stay barefoot and sound even with
the multi-day rides.

Well, we are going to hope that a Conditioning Division will be added to the GMHA 25 for 2010 and that would solve my problem.  The following year will be this youngster's first season (2011) and one of the few rides he will be able to enter. My goal here was to be able to stable both horses together if possible and to do that we might be able to stable in one of the 'non-competing shed row barns'.  For GMHA Upwey won't really work...  but thanks for the information.  Pacing?

I would think that it would be considered "pacing" and it is not allowed. Could she enter the ride and "pull" at the 1/2 hold?

Ruth:

All of my horses are barefoot now.  It is sorta by choice.  By choice, I mean, I was sick of being charged for the crappiest work on my horses feet by farriers.  In my over 15 years of horse ownership, I have had 2, just 2 very good farriers.  One was in Massachusetts, the second farrier I had, and I found him completely by accident.  He needed a truck, he had just moved to the area from New Mexico and was trying to get set up to do farrier work.  We traded the truck for a years worth of farrier service.  Both of us agreed it was a bargain.  I lost him after two years when his wife divorced him and he moved to Colorado.

The second very good farrier I had was down here in Texas.  Found him through a colleague of my husbands.  We had him for a year.  He became a cop and doesn't do much shoeing any more.

I have had 7 other farriers.  One of the 7 was good (good, not great), but at $285/horse, I had 4 horses, I just couldn't justify the expense.  The other 6 ranged from bad to incompetent to dangerous. I've had horses trip, forge, get thrush from lousy shoeing jobs, and of course, the lameness issues and the pulling shoes. The last one got fired because he quicked two horses on the same day.  One he had a hard time getting to stop bleeding and my mare was a jerk for the first couple times I tried to do her feet.  Once she realized I wasn't going to hurt her, she was fine.

I do it now myself.  I reasoned that the tools would cost me less than doing the 5 of them once, so even if it didn't work, the risk just wasn't that great.  I did not take any courses, but I have been watching good and bad work for years, I got some farrier books and I take my time.  Of course, I have one thing that my farriers don't: I really care about my horses.  They are barefoot because I do not know how to shoe yet.  When I feel that I can do it correctly, I will attempt a pair of shoes on the horse with the best feet and the best disposition, so that I have the best chance of doing it right.  With that I can then translate it to the not so good feet, worse disposition horses.  We are using boots now when we need them.  They are OK, but difficult to stay on.  I'm not into the glue ons and I don't like the gaiters, so we are limited to Easy (or as I call them Hard) Boots.  They require some skill, and a good hoof shape, to get them to stay on.

So here is one person whose horses are barefoot.  I'm going to guess that many who are using AHP here are doing it for similar reasons.  Some it is cost, some it is that they are just sick of the Primadona farriers telling you just how fabulous they and their work are and then having horses with problems that keep getting worse.  At least with AHP, the owner is in control.

I wonder sometimes how much of our differences of opinion about shoes/no shoes relate to the different blacksmiths we use.  I know, horse people never run out of things to say about vets and blacksmiths :-) But I've had to use several different blacksmiths over the years, as have many of us, and some of them simply can't put on a shoe with a pad that works for my boys. Traveling as far as we do, nothing but perfect will do. Lots of blacksmiths hate pads, and do them badly (chicken or the egg?). Lots hate clips. And many just have their shoes fall off (I had that guy for way too many months!) If metal shoes and pads are put on correctly, my guys at least have worry free going 24/7/365. Of course, Arabs do have notoriously good feet, but I just wonder how much of the anti-shoe feelings and experiences have come from blacksmiths trying to do things they just can't do. I've tried to force blacksmiths who "didn't believe in pads" to put them on and there was nothing but trouble with them. My blacksmith now, who I have used off and on over the years, never has trouble and my boys travel true and don't go lame. Just thinking out loud!
