Rhode Island Elephant Trivia from Sandy
in Israel (formerly from Rhode Island):
Elephant Day was proclaimed by the General Assembly on
May 25, 1976, in honor of Betty the Learned Elephant, who
was shot dead 150 years earlier in Chepachet, Rhode Island!!!!
Little Bett, aka Betty the Learned Elephant, one of the first
elephants exhibited in America, met her demise on the Main
Street bridge on her way out of town after a successful exhibition
behind the Chepachet Hotel. Details are skimpy and uncertain,
but it's known that she was fired upon by "diverse hands," and
that one bullet pierced her eye socket and lodged in her brain,
killing her.
