This message posted on Western Pal Bird Group today, (apologies for
cross posting)

One inmature Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) has been
seen
near Cario harbour (N Galicia, NW Spain) this morning (17/02/2008)
by Jos
Ardaiz. Not relocated afterwards despite intensive searching. The
bird was
seen flying towards NW to cape Ortegal area, where a strong Gannet
(Morus
bassanus) passage was noted.

This is one of the few records of the species in Galicia and Spain,
where
one bird was reported on Hondarribia harbour, Basque Country on
08/11/2005.
There is a recent Portuguese record aswell (Aveiro, 31/10/2005).

Dear all,

The winter have invaded Sweden, but I had have a nice seawatch holiday in
Senegal (e.g. N'Gor/Calao north-west of Dakar).

Today, I have launched the results and totals from our successful seawatch trip
tp the area. What about nearly 10.000 skuas in all!? Between 5 and 28 October
we recorded in total slightly more than 120.000 seabirds passing south. On the
main page you'll find three links, which concerns our trip. Within a few weeks
the trip report as well as several moore photo galleries will be launched to
the website. The trip report will also include a full report of the landbirds
as well as the cetaceans observations (we saw breaching Orcas and Humpback
Whales!).

Located at a great seawatch site, lovely, scanning the sea for passing
seabirds, not only sea turtles and cetaceans do appear, but many unexpected
birds do too. For example we recorded a single American Golden Plover,
Garganey, two Northern Shoveler, Merlin, Short-eared Owl, White-faced Whistling
Ducks.

The trip report will be launched within a few weeks as well as several new
seabird galleries. Feel free to visit the website "Seawatching in Senegal" and
enjoy the photos:

All the best and enjoy your weekend!

Dear all,

I have worked several hours to update the Madeira website with two (+ a third

have certainly been a happy moment!

The Swedish birder Claes Lv (12-17th September) and the Danish birder Franck
Ishi (10-23rd September, yes, still there) have witness a remarkable passage
of seabirds, especially Great and Manx Shearwaters. Whatabout 26.000 Manxies
(peak today with 10.500) and 4.554 Great Shearwaters (peak on 16th with 4.200)
passing Porto Moniz since Saturday 15th! Lots of skuas to as well as both Fea's
and Zino's in field, side by side! If you follow the link below you can read
Franck's field notes and experience seeing two Fea's along with a Zino's in
flight!

Dear Seawatchers,
It seems that something is on the way with the juv Long-tailed Skuas in the
souhtern part of the North Sea.
Today we recorded 21 juveniles LT Skuas from Cap gris-nez (France), while 13
were seen yesterday from le Clipon (France). Nothing very extraordinary
except that there were no particular influx of other small skuas and
particulary Arctics. Also quite unconspicious metorological conditions
(gentle breeze from the WSW today and NNW 4 yesterday).
Unusual numbers were recorded during the last week-end in Northern Germany
and in the Netherlands sind August 31st.
Also there, the proportion of LT Skuas in comparison to Artcic Skua is much
higher than usual.
Some inIand observation of LT occured in Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium
(2) and France (1 in Maine et Loire (49) and 1 in Doubs (25)). Some of them
were picked up exhausted and taken in care at revalidation center.
Hopefully to be followed !

To encourage submissions, perhaps it would be good to answer Dave's

Hi all,

and dont forget: any sighting in EEZ (French waters) are welcomed at the
French Rarities Committee. Unfortunately the FRC receives very few reports
from this area. Its a pity

The sighting of the Fea's / Zino's on the 16 - 19 July trip is in
the hands of Nigel Milius and will be submitted after the season has
ended. as you would expect from such an experienced observer, it
will not be claimed to species level but field notes will be
presented to document the sighting. Others who claim Fea's and other
rare tubenoses in the Bay so readily should maybe follow suit :-)

Any idea when the account of this sighting and/or description is
going to be published?

Hi all,

For the past year, DFDS Seaways has been supporting research work
undertaken by whale and dolphin charity ORCA - Organisation Cetacea.

ORCA conducts regular surveys onboard DFDS ships in order to learn
more about the status of these mammals and the threats that they face.

Now, DFDS Seaways are running four fully guided cruises between
Newcastle and Bergen in Norway, providing you with an opportunity to
learn more about how and why animals migrate whilst encountering
whales, dolphins, seabirds, and passage migrants in the northern
North Sea and Norwegian fjords. As part of DFDS Seaways' ongoing
commitment to nature conservation, a donation will be made to ORCA
for every passenger that reserves a place.

So why not head out to sea on a 2/3 night Wildlife Migration Norway
Cruise Break departing on 18th September, 6th October, and 9th
October (3 nights), or 21st September (2 nights) from 199pp (two
nights) or 229pp (3 nights).

Further information on the cruise is as follows:

Experience the wildlife and wonderful scenery on a short cruise break
from Newcastle to Bergen in Norway - through the rich waters of the
northern North Sea and the Norwegian fjords, passing through one of
Europe's most important wildlife migration routes.

During these voyages we expect to encounter over 50 species of birds,
as well as seals, porpoises, dolphins, and even whales!

Our guides, who are leading experts in their fields, will aim to
achieve the perfect blend of relaxed education, enthusiasm,
professionalism and humour to help you to make the most out of your
wildlife experience.

As well as the organised activities, you have a fun-filled and
relaxing time on board to look forward to, with a whole host of
things to see and do, including restaurants, bars, cinema, shops and
casino!

Chaps,

A recent edition of British Birds has an article on the ID of black and
white Atlantic Petrels. This seems to be aimed mainly at ship-based
observers rather than land-based and leans towards photographic evidence
for acceptance purposes (perhaps heralding a move to requiring
photographic only evidence for the acceptance of rarities and excluding
land based records od seabirds? But that's another matter). It repeats
the widely published view that Wilson's legs/feet are always clearly
visible in flight and that they rarely tuck their legs forward. My only
experience of this species is of land based observations in the USA and,
even at quite close range, 2-300 yds, I could not see the leg/foot
extension on any of the dozen or so individuals present. Can anyone who
has experience of land-based observations of this species say whether
they regard this as normal or not?

Paul

Hi there...and apologies for cross postings!

I am currently trying to track down a record of a Yellow-nosed
Albatross which is listed as occurring in Biscay as per Onley and
Scofield's (2007) Albatrosses, Petrels and Shearwaters of the World.

Can you shed any light on it?

Cheers

Hugh
