This Conference is a "must" if you're a:
Farrier who believes in continuing education, and you want to stay
informed of the latest farriery developments.
Veterinarian or Vet Tech who has an interest in farriery and
hoofcare, you want to successfully work in partnership with your
clients farriers, and you want to earn 12 hours of Continuing
Education credit.
Horse owner who is truly concerned about the care of your horses
hooves. Every farrier will tell you, "an educated horse owner is a
better customer."
Let's get something out of the way: You do NOT have to be an Internet
egghead to attend this Online Conference. Just the fact that you're
reading this page already indicates you know how to turn on your
computer and get online. The only other thing you need to check is to
see if your computer's speakers are working. If they are, you're all
set! (If you want to get fancy, add a microphone to your computer.
But it's not a necessity.)
The 2003 Conference will consist of six educational, practical and
thought provoking presentations:
Barbara Page, D.V.M.: "Natural Form and Function of the Equine Foot"
This presentation will review the study performed by Barbara,
comparing the radiology, histology and hoof capsule shape between
feral horses and wild horses. Included will be the function of the
foot with respect to hoof capsule shape, to help people think through
disease and inflammation, and thus treatment options.
A world-renown expert on the function and physiology of the hoof,
Barb is in constant demand as a lecturer and clinician. Her
presentation last year at the American Association of Equine
Practitioners conference garnered rave reviews from all in attendance.
There is a diversity of opinions about the function, shoeing and
trimming of the equine foot. One line of thought had logical sense
but little proof. This lead to scientific research as to what shoeing
techniques would improve the physiology and function of the foot,
thus decreasing lameness. Presently, Dr. Page does the research on
behalf of the Equine Wellness Foundation. The information gleaned
from the research is exposed to the public through magazine articles,
book chapters, scientific papers and lectures throughout the U.S. and
Europe, and now online conferences!

Gene Ovnicek: "Recognizing Navicular Syndrome Before it Becomes
Irreversible"
Did you know that horses that stumble, forge, or interfere are
displaying early signs of lameness that if left untreated could cause
Navicular related problems later in life? In this presentation you
will learn how to identify these early symptoms, as well as recognize
hoof capsule distortion that causes pathology to the region of the
coffin joint, Impar Ligament and Navicular Bone. You will also learn
how to correct the hoof deformity through simple guidelines.
Gene is nationally and internationally recognized as a farrier,
clinician and researcher. With over 40 years of horseshoeing
experience and a member of numerous groundbreaking research projects,
Gene is looked at as a key contributor to the ongoing advancement of
the farrier sciences. His information packed presentations have been
featured at some of the most prestigious farrier and veterinarian
conferences in the world. He is widely known for his research data
compiled from wild horse studies done in 1986 and 1987. The
information gathered from the wild horse hoof patterns observed from
the study led to the development of the hoof care methods of Natural
Balance for trimming and shoeing (a.k.a. Wild Horse Trim and Natural
Trim). More recent developments of this Natural Balance information
includes the Natural Balance Shoes™ and the Equine Digit Support
System, which is used in the treatment of lower limb pathologies.
Gene's Natural Balance information have been published in the
American Farrier's Journal (AFJ), Anvil Magazine, TrailBlazer
magazine, Horse Illustrated, Western Horseman, the European Farrier's
Journal, EQUUS and several associated press articles. The wild horse
research material, as well as the Natural Balance guidelines are
published in the book, "New Hope for Soundness" and on the
www.hopeforsoundness.com website.
As a clinician, Gene has been invited to share this information with
a wide range of groups and activities. A few include:
Guest Speaker at the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium in 1994
Speaker at the 1995 meeting of the American Association of Equine
Practitioners
Speaker at the 1997 Guild of Professional Farriers Convention
Guest Speaker at the 1998 Colorado VMA Conference

Woodrow (Tookie) Myers, D.V.M. (and a farrier!): "Laminitis: Is it?
Or isn't it?"
"As a farrier and veterinarian, I feel obligated to inform my clients
of suspected laminitis. What do I do to convey that it doesn't have
to be a "death sentence or a disaster"? This session will present an
organized diagnostic approach for the farrier, veterinarian and owner
to determine exactly what the situation is, and how to optimally
handle the suspected laminitis. And the best news is, the horse may
turn out not to be laminitic at all.
With over forty years of equine experience and over thirty in farrier
work, Dr. Myers brings a unique perspective to the diagnosis and
treatment of problems in the equine. Clinical applications of
biomechanical principles have led to the recovery or control of a
number of originally "hopeless" cases. Working with the specific
mechanics of the hoof and limb has led to a return to a useful life
for many horses and a reduction or elimination of medications
originally used to control the problem. Medical and surgical
procedures are utilized when appropriate, but biomechanical
correction has been found to be the first line of defense in all
lameness situations.
A continual search for improved techniques for diagnosis and
treatment has led to publication and research as well as lectures to
groups on a variety of topics. Prevention of problems and disease is
a hallmark of Dr. Myers practice. Addition of computerized balance
measurement for internal and external distal limb structures is
increasing the accuracy and efficiency of treatment. This procedure
is additionally increasing long distance consulting and assistance to
those not in the immediate service area. Farriers and veterinarians
can be rapidly trained long distance in these techniques, and
correction applied to the case for relief.
