The 7th Annual Farrier & Hoofcare Online Conference is scheduled.

Mark your calendars for November 20, 21 and 22. You won't want to
miss it.

Look at this all-star line-up:

* Bruce Matthews - "Horsemanship Skills for the Working Farrier"
* Pat Reilly - "Balanced Foot? Instrumented Horseshoes for the Assessment of
Solar Hoof Forces"
* Ronald Aalders - "The Conundrum of Hoof Mechanics, Hoof Conformation, and
Their Effects
on Hooves and the Whole Horse"
* Chris Gregory, MS, CJF, FWCF - "General Farriery: From Hoof to Fire"
* Jaye Perry - "Every Hoof Capsule Tells a Story"
* A Round-table moderated by Baron Tayler

Go to: www.farrierandhoofcareonlineconference.com for all the details.

This Conference is a "must" if you're a:
Horse owner who is truly concerned about the care of your horses
hooves. Every farrier will tell you, "an educated horse owner is a
better customer."

Farrier who believes in continuing education, and you want to stay
informed of the latest farriery developments.

Veterinarian or Vet Tech who has an interest in farriery and
hoofcare, you want to successfully work in partnership with your
clients farriers.

Let's get something out of the way: You do NOT have to be an Internet
egghead to attend this Online Conference. Just the fact that you're
reading this page already indicates you know how to turn on your
computer and get online. The only other thing you need to check is to
see if your computer's speakers are working. If they are, you're all
set! (If you want to get fancy, add a microphone to your computer.
But it's not a necessity.)

What if you can't attend one or two of the sessions? Not a problem.
After the conference you will receive, at no additional cost, a full
record of all 6 sessions, on DVD. You won't miss a minute of this conference.

How, exactly, will you be able to attend and participate? After
you've registered you'll be sent the details on what you need to do
to access the conference. There's nothing complicated involved.

Don't delay! Give yourself an early Holiday Season present.

Farriers Depot, Pieh Tool Company and Equine Digit Support System are
pleased to announce that they're participating in a fund raiser for
the Guild of Professional Farriers. The fund raiser is going on right
now, and ends on Sunday! Funds raised will be used for educational
purposes, and improving infrastructure. And this is a fund raiser
you'll REALLY enjoy.

The fundraiser may be accessed at:

http://fundraiser.wonbid.com

(Note that there is no "www" in the URL.)

WonBid is graciously hosting the fund raiser at no cost, and ALL
proceeds go to the Guild. So every penny you spend purchasing the
items available will go to the Guild, with no overhead taken out.

And here's what makes this fund raiser so cool: Take a look at the
prices for the items offered. They keep getting LOWER. Right in front
of your eyes. Every time you see the price "flash," it has dropped
again. The strategy is simple: Find the items(s) you want, decide
what price you'll pay, and wait for the item(s) to drop to that
price. But there's a catch! If someone else bids on the item first,
it's gone! Like their slogan says, "You Bid. You Win. Guaranteed."
Only one bid is allowed per item (unless you put an Option on the
item). So don't wait too long, or someone else will bid before you
do, and poof, it's gone.

WonBid has only made one request: After you visit the site, please
take a minute to fill out their Feedback page. (Look for the Feedback
link.) Doing so will not only help them improve the web site, but it
also gives you a chance to win a Thoro'Bred shoeing box worth $160!!
Not bad for a minute of your time. (Everyone who completes the
Feedback page is eligible, not only people who purchase items.)

There's a great selection of supplies and tools for farriers, as well
as horse care items for horse owners. Please take this opportunity to
purchase items you can really use, and help the Guild at the same
time.

PS - If this letter would interest any of your friends, please pass
it on. Thanks!

OK folks, a plan is forming. Feedback from the devastated region
indicates that sending checks or even money orders is fairly useless,
because no one will cash them, IF a location can even be found to try
to cash them.

So here's the plan: Instead of sending checks to the Farriers Relief
Fund, go to your local Wal-Mart, Lowes or Home Depot store, and
purchase Gift Cards. These cards are the same as cash in those
stores, and will allow recipients to walk in and get supplies.

So I urge all of you: Please, get out there, purchase Gift Cards, and
mail them to:

Farriers Relief Fund
160 Five Point Road
Robesonia, PA 19551

I also urge you to copy this post, and e-mail it to everyone you know
who can help. And ask them to pass it on as well.

Thanks,

Hello!

Hard to believe it, but this year's Online Conference is approaching
quickly.

This year's line-up of speakers is awesome:

Gene Ovnicek and Craig Trnka "face-off" in a "Natural Balance Shoeing
Versus Traditional Shoeing" session. This could be 4 of the most
interesting hours of farrier discussion ever presented.

Dave Ferguson, a legend in the farrier community, will be offering a
presentation on Maintaining Soundness in your Day To Day Work. It
isn't every day you get to sit at the knee of the "Master" without
leaving the comfort of your Lazy-Boy recliner.

Dan Guerrera, taking a breather from giving lectures and seminars
world-wide, will be presenting a session on When The Owner Says Take
Them Off. An advocate of keeping horses barefoot when appropriate,
this promises to be a great session. Every farrier knows they make
more money (time-wise) trimming than shoeing.

Andrew Parks DVM, from the University of Georgia, and whose
credentials are far too numerous to list in this letter, will offer a
session on The Equine Foot: Form and Function. If you've never heard
Dr. Parks speak, you're in for a treat. Those who have will tell you
not to miss a moment.

You are eligible for a $50 discount off the Conference registration
fee if:
1) You've attended a previous Conference, or
2) You're registered with the Farrier & Hoofcare Resource Center
Forums.

This year's Conference is being sponsored by Vettec Hoofcare
Products, Castle Plastics and Midwest Farrier Supply. Please
patronoge these businesses. Their web sites are located in the
Marketplace at http://www.horseshoes.com/supplies

Additional Conference information may be found at:

see if your computer's speakers are working. If they are, you're all

But it's not a necessity.)

The 2003 Conference will consist of six educational, practical and
thought provoking presentations:

Barbara Page, D.V.M.: "Natural Form and Function of the Equine Foot"
This presentation will review the study performed by Barbara,
comparing the radiology, histology and hoof capsule shape between
feral horses and wild horses. Included will be the function of the
foot with respect to hoof capsule shape, to help people think through
disease and inflammation, and thus treatment options.

A world-renown expert on the function and physiology of the hoof,
Barb is in constant demand as a lecturer and clinician. Her
presentation last year at the American Association of Equine
Practitioners conference garnered rave reviews from all in attendance.

There is a diversity of opinions about the function, shoeing and
trimming of the equine foot. One line of thought had logical sense
but little proof. This lead to scientific research as to what shoeing
techniques would improve the physiology and function of the foot,
thus decreasing lameness. Presently, Dr. Page does the research on
behalf of the Equine Wellness Foundation. The information gleaned
from the research is exposed to the public through magazine articles,
book chapters, scientific papers and lectures throughout the U.S. and
Europe, and now online conferences!

------------------------

Gene Ovnicek: "Recognizing Navicular Syndrome Before it Becomes
Irreversible"
Did you know that horses that stumble, forge, or interfere are
displaying early signs of lameness that if left untreated could cause
Navicular related problems later in life? In this presentation you
will learn how to identify these early symptoms, as well as recognize
hoof capsule distortion that causes pathology to the region of the
coffin joint, Impar Ligament and Navicular Bone. You will also learn
how to correct the hoof deformity through simple guidelines.

Gene is nationally and internationally recognized as a farrier,
clinician and researcher. With over 40 years of horseshoeing
experience and a member of numerous groundbreaking research projects,
Gene is looked at as a key contributor to the ongoing advancement of
the farrier sciences. His information packed presentations have been
featured at some of the most prestigious farrier and veterinarian
conferences in the world. He is widely known for his research data
compiled from wild horse studies done in 1986 and 1987. The
information gathered from the wild horse hoof patterns observed from
the study led to the development of the hoof care methods of Natural
Balance for trimming and shoeing (a.k.a. Wild Horse Trim and Natural
Trim). More recent developments of this Natural Balance information
includes the Natural Balance Shoes™ and the Equine Digit Support
System, which is used in the treatment of lower limb pathologies.

Gene's Natural Balance information have been published in the
American Farrier's Journal (AFJ), Anvil Magazine, TrailBlazer
magazine, Horse Illustrated, Western Horseman, the European Farrier's
Journal, EQUUS and several associated press articles. The wild horse
research material, as well as the Natural Balance guidelines are
published in the book, "New Hope for Soundness" and on the
www.hopeforsoundness.com website.

As a clinician, Gene has been invited to share this information with
a wide range of groups and activities. A few include:

Guest Speaker at the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium in 1994
Speaker at the 1995 meeting of the American Association of Equine
Practitioners
Speaker at the 1997 Guild of Professional Farriers Convention
Guest Speaker at the 1998 Colorado VMA Conference
Speaker at the 1999 Wyoming VMA Conference
Speaker at Colorado State Univ. CE Clinic for Vets and Farriers
Speaker at UC Davis CE Clinics for Vets and Farriers
Speaker at the 1998 Heumphreus Memorial Conference at UC Davis
Speaker at several TFP Farrier/Vet Conferences in England
Speaker at the 1998 Ashbrook Farrier/Vet Conference in the UK
Guest Speaker at the 11th Congress for Farriers & Vets of France 1999
Speaker at the Annual Rochester Lameness Conference '97 & '00
Speaker at the 2001 Meeting of the Canadian Veterinary Medical
Association

Surgeons
Speaker at the 2002 Farrier & Hoofcare Online Conference

-----------------------------

Woodrow (Tookie) Myers, D.V.M. (and a farrier!): "Laminitis: Is it?
Or isn't it?"
"As a farrier and veterinarian, I feel obligated to inform my clients
of suspected laminitis. What do I do to convey that it doesn't have
to be a "death sentence or a disaster"? This session will present an
organized diagnostic approach for the farrier, veterinarian and owner
to determine exactly what the situation is, and how to optimally
handle the suspected laminitis. And the best news is, the horse may
turn out not to be laminitic at all.

With over forty years of equine experience and over thirty in farrier
work, Dr. Myers brings a unique perspective to the diagnosis and
treatment of problems in the equine. Clinical applications of
biomechanical principles have led to the recovery or control of a
number of originally "hopeless" cases. Working with the specific
mechanics of the hoof and limb has led to a return to a useful life
for many horses and a reduction or elimination of medications
originally used to control the problem. Medical and surgical
procedures are utilized when appropriate, but biomechanical
correction has been found to be the first line of defense in all
lameness situations.

A continual search for improved techniques for diagnosis and
treatment has led to publication and research as well as lectures to
groups on a variety of topics. Prevention of problems and disease is
a hallmark of Dr. Myers practice. Addition of computerized balance
measurement for internal and external distal limb structures is
increasing the accuracy and efficiency of treatment. This procedure
is additionally increasing long distance consulting and assistance to
those not in the immediate service area. Farriers and veterinarians
can be rapidly trained long distance in these techniques, and
correction applied to the case for relief.

(To view this letter correctly, you must be connected to the Internet while reading it.)
How would you like to have top farriers and clinicians such as Mitch Taylor, Barb Page, Gene Ovnicek, Matt Frederick, and others, drop by your house for a few days to share information and trade knowledge and techniques? Sound unlikely? Not any more!

Don't miss the First Annual
Farrier and Hoofcare Online Conference

Haven't heard about it yet? That's because the publicity and promotion campaign has just started. You're receiving this Personal Invitation, providing you the opportunity to register at a discounted pre-major-publicity rate. Attendance is limited.

What: Six educational and thought provoking presentations. Take a look at this line-up:

Mitch TaylorMitch Taylor, CJF:  "Hoof Anatomical Dissection and Dynamics of the Equine Limb Under Load"
Mitch will be presenting one of his famous Hoof Anatomical Dissections, right on your computer screen!

Mitch has been the Director of the Kentucky Horseshoeing School since 1989. Known for his clinics on equine anatomy and physiology as it pertains to horseshoeing, Mitch has given clinics all over the US, as well as in South Africa, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Turkey and Mexico. His anatomy and dissection clinics at the AFA Convention and association clinics are always overflowing in attendance.

Mitch is the Chairman of the AFA Continuing Education Committee and has served on the AFA Board of Directors, as well as being a past president of the Registry of Professional Farrier Educators.

Barbara PageBarbara Page, D.V.M.: "The Importance of Hoof-Pastern Axis and Ways to Effect HPA with Shoeing and Trimming"
A world-renown expert on the function and physiology of the hoof, Barb is in constant demand as a lecturer and clinician. Her presentation last year at the American Association of Equine Practitioners conference garnered rave reviews from all in attendance.

Currently involved in scientific research as to what shoeing techniques will improve the physiology and function of the foot, and thus help decrease lameness, Barb generously shares the results of her ongoing work.

Rick WunschRick Wunsch, CPA: "Fundamental Financial Formulas for Farriers"
Rick has over twenty years of experience in finance, management, and administration. A strong believer in planning ahead, particularly in regards to financial security, Rick likes to share tips, techniques and ways to prepare yourself for long-term financial stability.  Rick is also one of the few CPA’s with extensive farrier business-related experience.

Matt Frederick, CF: "Successfully Managing the Laminitic Horse"
Matt is an AFA certified farrier practicing in Northern California, specializing in complicated laminitis.  He is a 1993 graduate of the Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School in Elk Grove, California. Matt was a recent speaker at the 2001 Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium in Louisville, KY where he presented the results of his field study "Treating Refractory Laminitis: A Field Study of Refractory Laminitic Cases that Resolved on Pergolide Mesylate." Together with his wife Susan Tierney Frederick, they have developed a "unification" hypothesis for the etiology of laminitis. They believe that MOST laminitic horses encountered in the field share an underlying condition: insulin resistance.

Matt has been using natural balance shoeing principals and the EDSS shoeing system for all his laminitic cases since 1996. Together with his "revolutionary" hypothesis of the etiology of most laminitis encountered in the field; Matt's three-part approach (diet control, pergolide administration and shoeing/trimming support) offers a concrete and effective way for practitioners to treat their (formerly) hopeless cases.

Gene OvnicekGene Ovnicek: "Essential Hoof Care - Improving Performance & Preventing Lameness Through Natural Guidelines"
Gene is nationally and internationally recognized as a farrier, clinician and researcher.  With over 40 years of horseshoeing experience and a member of numerous groundbreaking research projects, Gene is looked at as a key contributor to the ongoing advancement of the farrier sciences. He is widely known for his research data compiled from wild horse studies done in 1986 and 1987.  The information gathered from the wild horse hoof patterns observed from the study led to the development of the hoof care methods of Natural Balance for trimming and shoeing (a.k.a. Wild Horse Trim and Natural Trim).  More recent developments of this Natural Balance information includes the Natural Balance Shoes™ and the Equine Digit Support System, which is used in the treatment of lower limb pathologies.

Gene's Natural Balance information has been published in the American Farrier’s Journal (AFJ), Anvil Magazine, TrailBlazer magazine, Horse Illustrated, Western Horseman, the European Farrier’s Journal, EQUUS and several Associated Press articles.

Rick Burten
Rick Burten, CJF, RMF: Rick will be the moderator of a "Round-Table Discussion in Response to the Questions and Interests of the Conference Participants"
By "Conference Participants" we me YOU, as well as the speakers! Through the magic of the Internet you'll be able to submit questions and participate in the discussion.

A decorated military veteran, Rick has been shoeing for almost 25 years. His commitment to ongoing farrier education borders on the fanatic He's both a CJF in the American Farriers Association, as well as a RMF in the Guild of Professional Farriers (of which he's a Charter Member). On top of that he's an Approved Tester for the AFA certification exam, and an Official Examiner for the Guild of Professional Farriers certification exam.

Rick is very active in the Land of Lincoln Horseshoers Association, and has won numerous state and national competitions in the show ring. As the Resident Farrier for The Farrier & Hoofcare Resource Center, Rick answers hundreds (perhaps thousands) of bulletin board posts a year, donating untold hours to the goal of sharing his knowledge with other farriers and concerned horse owners. He looks forward to discussing issues which are of interest to you.

Hello,

I don't have time to run a horseshoe company, and maintain The
Resource Center, etc... Too much. I'm liquidating my remaining
inventory, so if you are interested in saving a bundle off the cost
of shoes, or you know a person who's in the business of manufacturing
items out of horse shoes, let me know.

I currently have the inventory up for auction on the eBay site. You

Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 21, at 6pm East Coast time. I'm
pleased to announce that our featured clinician for this chat will be
Tom Curl, one of the best known and well-respected farriers in the
world. Tom has been shoeing for 27 years. Tom wants to concentrate on
the subject of techniques and uses of glue-on shoes, although he'll
be
more than happy to converse about his experience in other areas, such
as lameness and quarter cracks.

If you've never participated in one of our chats (they're audio, not
typing!), go to http://www.horseshoes.com/chatroom/chatroom.htm for

You won't want to miss this chat. See you there.

I am pleased to announce that Rob Sigafoos, Chief of Farrier Services,
Director of the Applied Polymer Research Lab at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine,
located at the New Bolton Center, will be the featured
"speaker" at the next online chat.

Rob will focus on what he views as some of the radical
methods of hoof balance that have become popular lately.
He feels many people are losing their objectivity and
are using over-simplified methods to trim feet in order
to simplify an extremely complex problem.

This promises to be a great session!!

The chat will be held at 6pm East Coast time (US), on
Sunday, March 12. To find out how to attend the chat,
and review the guidelines for participation, go to the
Online Seminars and Chat page of The Farrier & Hoofcare

Hello Everyone,

I've been busy converting all the sites with online sales to the new
shopping cart system. It's very slick, and easy to use. For those of
you who use AOL and were having problems with the old system, those
days are gone. Try popping into one of the big supplier sites and
taking a look at it. Even if you don't order anything, at least you'll
get an idea of where things are headed.

I'm pleased to announce that Associate Membership is now available for
The Resource Center. For full details you may want to visit:

http://www.horseshoes.com/associatemembership/associatemembership.htm

The cost is peanuts (16 cents a day), but as an Associate Member you
have some great opportunities, such as:

*** Receiving $2,000 worth of farrier supplies from companies in The
Marketplace, or

*** Receiving the cost of domestic air-fare, hotel accommodations and
$500 spending money, to attend the next AFA Convention, or the Guild of
Professional Farriers Convention, or

*** A $2,000 credit at a farrier school in the Farrier Schools section,
so you can brush up on technique and learn new skills.

I hope you'll take advantage of the membership offer, as it will go a
long way to helping The Resource Center's continuing growth. (And
you'll never miss the 16 cents a day!)

Hope I see you at the AFA Convention next month.

Regards,
            Baron

Hello all,

Between my heart surgery 6 months ago, selling the farm, moving, trying
to cram the contents of 1 house and 3 barns into the new house, and
keeping up with The Resource Center, I'm afraid I simply haven't kept
up with the ICFA Newsletter. I apologize. I will try harder.

I'll be at the AFA Convention next month, and hope you'll take a few
minutes to drop by my booth and share any thoughts you have about,
well, anything. Comments, questions, ideas, I listen to all of them.

Hope you had an enjoyable holiday season, and a happy new year.

Regards,

Hello Fellow ICFA members!

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to send something out. I'm sure the
last thing you want to do is waste time reading my excuses..... I must
confess that simply taking care of The Resource Center is enough to
keep any two people busy, and the heart surgery I had a few months back
didn't help. But life goes on.

I do intend to send out a real, organized, and informative ICFA
Newsletter in the very near future, and with a little luck am aiming at
trying to keep to a quarterly schedule. If you would like to contribute
to the Newsletter in any way, please don't hesitate to contact me. I
can use the help.

There are a few ideas I have concerning activities for ICFA members,
and I'll be using the "Poll" function to send out a few polls. Please
take the time to respond, as I'd like to tailor things to your
interests.

A few things I'd like to mention before closing:

1) The Farrier & Hoofcare Resource Center On The Road Program is
gaining steam. We're already scheduled to give clinics in Sturgeon Bay,
Wisconsin on September 11 and 12, and the UMHA clinic in Burlington,
Wisconsin, on October 9. Another one is in the planning stage for
Wyoming in the Spring. I hope Danvers Child and I see you at one of
these functions. If your association would like a good clinic on the
subjects of Farrier Resources On The Web, and more traditional hands-on
farriery topics, contact me. There's info available in the Resource
Center in the On The Road section.

2) I think I've finally found a really good group audio application for
chats. Using this application we'll be able to hold excellent online
forums and educational seminars. Of course you can use it any time to
talk over the Internet to anyone else with the program, free. No long
distance charges. And the program is free as well. I urge you to go to
www.firetalk.com and down load the program and install it. (Sorry, it's
a Windows program. Hopefully they'll do a Mac version soon.)

After you install it and get your FireTalk ID number, please send it to
me by e-mail so I can add you to my contact list. It will make inviting
you to the seminars much easier.

Have to run! 31 bulletin boards to clean up.....

Regards,
           Baron

Hello Fellow Farriers,

This newsletter is going to be short, because
we're preparing to leave for the Bluegrass Laminitis
Symposium in Louisville, and then go straight to the
AFA Convention in Lexington.

The Farrier & Hoofcare Resource Center will have a
booth at both functions, and we hope you'll drop by and
see us. At the BLS we'll be giving away a pair of top
quality shoeing chaps, and at the AFA Convention we'll
be giving away a color printer. Stop by and find out
how to win.

We'll leave you with a few thoughts:

- If you have a few minutes once or twice a week,
stop by the bulletin boards and share your knowledge
and experience with others. It's a great way to help
people, all over the world.

- The Farriers Relief fund was established last year,
and honestly, with all the other stuff going on in
The Resource Center, it's sort of been neglected. But
it shouldn't be, because it could serve a very useful
purpose if the funds were there. No one likes to think
about getting injured, but it could happen to you, and
the fund could help. Please give some thought to
committing yourself to only $10 per month, if you can
see your way to it. (Sign up for the automatic credit
card deduction, and you won't even have to remember to
do it.) If every farrier who visits The Resource Center
donated only $10 per month, we'd have tens of thousands
of dollars a month available to help farriers in need.

That's all for now. Hope we see you at the exhibitions,

Henry Heymering, Danvers Child, Baron Tayler
