Hi Jeanne,
what an excellent idea to have instructions filed at your vets in case
you are away.
I think I will let you know a day when I need some stress relief. I
mean most days I need stress relief! LOL! But I will wait for a day when I
could do with it even more!
Love, Voula and Pebbles and Lucy and my Beautiful Angel Sachie.

Jeanne,

We did the "living will" thing when we went on our honeymoon 14 years ago.
We specified that they should receive any care necessary, but no euthanasia
until we were contacted to discuss the situation.

We also did our real will just before we left. We specified the type of care
the cats should get, the guardian (my mom), and the amount of money. They
get the first chunk of money.

Wanna hear the really sad part? We now have two children (and another pet),
but haven't updated our will. We just can't decide on an appropriate
guardian. So I guess the cats will be swimming in dough and pay for
Courtney, Jon, and Nicky.

We REALLY need to get our acts together, especially since we're thinking of
adopting a baby this year!

Laura, nonworried humanmom

How was the initial diagnosis made? Audible heart murmur? Ultrasound?
Young cats/kittens have an excellent chance of leading near normal
lives if HCM is caught early & treatment started early. I'd definetly
recommend having Rocket seen by a Internal Med/Cardiologist and have
an ECG (ultrasound) performed to gauge the size, shape, and efficiency
of the components within the heart.

I do not want to needlessly worry you but things can do downhill
pretty fast with this disease if left untreated.

I know you all love your cats deeply, as I too do, but don't forget- your
own health is being jeopardized by so much worrying. And it is not always
the best thing for your cats. Animals are very sensitive to the vibes we
emit, and not being relaxed around them probably upsets them more then we
realize. My (unsolicited) advice would be to learn the facts, write down any
emergency instructions or wishes so you know they can be carried out in your
absence, medicate your cats as needed, then sit back and enjoy the time you
have with them- play, cuddle, just watch- but let them be cats.

Laura,

I love it! The cats are provided for and not the human children--oh
well, like you said the cats will take good care of them! LOL

So cute!!

Maybe I need to clarify that I am not that BAD!! I do exactly what
you suggested but just go a little too far out of the way to
accomodate the Dom. But, hey, my kids were spoiled when they were
young too. Just my nature and I am sure Dom doesn't mind! As far as
the worrying goes, I will always find something to worry about and it
changes day to day. I sure have accepted that Dom has this disease
and he will be pampered as long as we have him and I suppose because
the kids are grown up and gone, he will be the target of my worry
from time to time. He is doing so well that I usually forget about
his health except for meds, etc. I am 1 of the very fortunate ones
that haven't had any real problems since diagnosis and Dom is a very
content and happy cat. He is whacking the keyboard keys and purring
as I type this-he loves the laptop (probably really the heat from
it!). My type of worry just generates more attention to him and he
seems to handle that real well! I do know what you mean about
real "stress" as when my father in law had cancer, we could tell that
Dom knew something was wrong around here. They do sense that but not
just everyday concern! I suppose there are many different levels of
worrying.

Depending on the state, a child not otherwise mentioned in the will MAY be
entitled to something. But it does not generally "cancel" the will.

I'm in Maryland; I don't know what the state law is here. But don't worry,
the children have ski apparel, including several winter jackets, if it's
cold outside.

Helen, we'd all move to England to live in the mother country if it wasn't
for the rabies quarantine. I believe it's 6 months for dogs; what is it for
cats?

England seems more progressive in general about animal rights. Am I correct?
Plus, people aren't murdered left and right like they are here.

I did the same for the cats. But I simply can't get them to wear the
mittens. Stubborn little brats. And we're getting buried in snow right
now. Oh, well, their loss. No skiing for them.

kidney pie.

Steak and kidney pie??? Yuck because I'm a vegetarian, and double yuck
because I've heard enough about kidneys to last a lifetime.

Something we have to remind ourselves when we're whirling around
Pongo like dervishes going "Don't Panic!" Don't Panic!" because he's
doing something life-threatening, like balking at a med-infused treat.

Whereupon he slinks away like a bug, probably thinking that humans
are insane and if only he could open cans by himself, it would be a
perfect world.

This is when we have to remind ourselves that whatever it was that
caused Pongo's heart attack, it was most likely *not* being a half-
hour late with a dosage, and that a cat is not Ghandi -- unless it's
desperately ill, it will eventually *eat*. And usually what you don't
want it to.

We're not sure what caused or will cause a heart attack in our cats,
but we have more than a passing clue now as to what will cause one in
us.

pet trusts..it is actually very important that someone know you even have an

anyone knew she was in owners apartment.

I live in NJ, about 60 miles or so from Newark, DE & we already have 12" of
snow & it's still coming down.

hi jeanne,

well, michael has told me that he has a 2 wk seminar to attend in france
this summer and i am agonizing over that bec i can't imagine leaving pum
with a caregiver that long...my neighbor had the poor judgement to suggest
"a kennel"....and we all nearly had cardiac failure on the spot...i would
never even consider that as an option....so now i might have a friend who
will come catsit and that would be the only reasonable option as far as i'm
considered and then of course i call at least twice a day to be sure he's
ok....

and you are right...first i turned grayheaded and now i'm losing my hair
....too much worrying here...i probably need to go into therapy!

purrs to you,

linda and the boys

I have to be certain that I am counted in the worrying cat moms too!
I can keep right up with the rest of you and I haven't even had a
problem with Dom so far! By the time that we get to the point where
you guys have all been, I won't have a hair left on my head! LOL

I, too cater to the Doms every whim and alot of whims that he doesn't
even have! I never go out without having a radio playing for him. We
have the lights all on timers so Dom isn't in the dark. Plus I have
not spent the night away from him in over a year. DH has 2
overnighters planned this spring and I am struggling to tell myself
that it will be fine even when I have my son coming in twice a day to
give Dom his meds etc. I watch the poor guy like a hawk and call the
vet any time that I think I see anything out of the norm. Thank
heavens my regular vet is very tolerant and concerned about Dom too!
I think he is her only feline cardiac patient right now!

I actually get stressed out when 1 of "our" cats on the board is
having a hard time--it doesn't have to be mine! I will always be glad
to worry about your cat for you! I think my human family members
would tell you that I am a stressed person! <G>

Off to relax!
Jeanne

oooohhhh, this sounds great...what about someone pitching the idea for a pet
friendly retirement community of pet lovers or else we could just make a
list of where we all live and if we had to "go away" for some reason, we
could babysit each other's pet if we are close enough to each other?? i
guess i don't count, being in jamaica....but wouldn't that be a neat thing
to be able to do...???? any ideas?? and with time the list might
grow....didn't someone in seattle area have this kind of thing being set
up??? i'm pretty sure that i saw it about a year in some posting...

Gee, wouldn't that be great if we actually could do that? And
wouldn't it be nice if we all lived in the same neighborhood so we
could watch over each others cats? Gee, I would love to sit with
Pebbles, Pum, Pongo, Kassy, Angel Lynx, Angel Sachie, and all of the
others I read about on the list! And I may actually stop calling home
and talking to the answering machine so Dom can hear my voice if I
thought 1 of you fellow worrying cat moms was in charge. <G> I trust
my son but he is 27 and not Doms favorite person since he only sees
him infrequently. Plus he is not into the "cardiac cat" as he calls
Dom. He just doesn't get it! I do have a letter on file at my vets
office with my wishes outlined if something should happen to Dom
while I am away though. I also have a copy here in case he should
need to be taken to the emergency vet who wouldn't have acess to my
vets letter immediately. I am prepared! Sort of like a living will
for Dom--I know I have lost it! But, I feel better this way! Did any
of you do this too?

Just LMK the day that I am to take on all worries with Pebbles! I am
always available!

Laura, nonworried humanmom

the part that i'm wondering is how the vet could determine that there was a
cardiomyopathy if there were no symptoms manifesting themselves.>>???? also,
my experience with pum and the fact that i can't get him to the vet as
regularly as i'd like to, is that you must constantly monitor, medicate and
adjust meds accordingly to keep it under control...i'm sure that the fact
that i can't access adequate vet care asap has made the time we'll be with
him shorter...

my advice: get a good cardiologist and go to him asap....

I do not want to needlessly worry you but things can do downhill
pretty fast with this disease if left untreated.

yes, you are right....however, it has helped me just to read that i'm not
the only compulsive, obsessive worrier and if it hadn't been for this
website then i'd never have had the opportunity to read it....and also, alot
of other info came out about the living wills and the suggestions and that
was helpful for me too....when you are away from close friends and family it
helps to have places like this to help one thru the difficult moments and
also the less difficult moments where thoughts are just shared.....it means
so much to me to have the feline egroups candid atmosphere where anything
can be shared....
