Lisa,

I found that over time, all of Pepper's medications & supplements were
upsetting her stomach. SEB soothes the stomach and helps relieve the
discomfort. I mixed a small pinch in with her food and also added a bit of
water since it tends to absorb a lot of water. That way, the food didn't
get too "dry" in comparison to its normal moisture content.

I can't say that it's recommended with specific medications - just that it
helps with the stomach upset that some of them cause.

Since SEB coats the digestive tract, you don't want to give it shortly
before giving medication (about an hour) since it will lessen the amount of
medication that gets absorbed.

I bought mine in bulk from a local health food store. They have a bin of
the Frontier brand and you just take what you want. You can also buy it in
capsules.

I was digging through some of the posts looking for what this is for
specifically, since Cameron's appetite is way WAY down since he added
diltiazem twice a day to his atenolol. I did get the vet to agree to
keeping him on 7.5 mg 2x/day instead of ramping up to 15 mg - we are
supposed to stay at this dose for a week and reevaluate - apparently
there's another med that may sit better with him. But will Pepcid or
SEB help bring back my guy's appetite?

Thank you,

Well the pit bulls are still on the loose. I have called animal control,
the sherriff and the landlord that owns the property and so far nothing has
been done. These dogs are still on the loose. Sim is beside himself with
stress from being in the house. I have been taking him for a few hours here
and
there while I sit out there with him, but I am going to have to go back to
work tomorrow. He is trying to climb the blinds. His eyes look wild and he
paces the house. He is grumpy and hisses at everything that moves. He poops
in
the floor in front of the litter box. Even though when he get outside he
is fine and just goes to sleep in the sun and pee in the dirt. What is the
homeopathic stuff you all give for stress? I could not remember the name. I
will try to find some so I can give him something before leaving for work.

Some atenolol pills cut a lot easier than others. I think the Geneva brand
cuts nice and cleanly. The cardiologist recommended them because they cut
easy.

Well an update on Ellie the one attacked by Pit Bulls. She is doing well
eating, drinking and peeing, but she is not pooping. How long is it safe for
cat not to go? She has not gone since Saturday afternoon. She acted like she
tried once but nothing happened. I know it has to hurt down there and they
didn't give her any pain meds. She is not walking around much but she
can. Any pooping suggestions? The vet said if she does not by tomorrow there
could be somethings wrong with the intestines although the xray looked fine.
Another worry.

Bridget-I'm reposting this, the first one didn't go through.

  Hi Bridget,

I'm glad to see Ellie is eating.

If she cant poop she is going to be uncomfortable.

Try hairball gel if you have, or maybe a little extra virgin olive oil or
canola oil.

Hope this helps

Thank you Sue - I will pick some up for my boy. Although he could
probably stand to lose maybe 2 lbs as he's already 15 lbs and won't
be a yr till later this month (and Dexter looked perfect at 12 lbs),
I hate for him to do it because his tummy hurts.

Hi Sue,

Can you give the SEB mixed in the food at the same time as B Complex and
Taurine.

Since you can't give it at the same time with the meds, I was wondering
about vitamins.

Thanks,

Thanks for asking, Candace. I am trying to figure out the logistics
of this. Whether once a day is sufficient etc. Maybe I need to put
his supplements in his morning meal without the SEB, then do his
morning meds. and at night only do SEB in his evening meal, then
wait at least an hour for his evening meds. Poor little guy - it's
hard to see his appetite so diminished despite being fed his very
favorite food.

Maybe they need to give her pain meds. Cats are good at hiding pain so
often the vet just doesn't give them any. IMO, that's wrong.

I think that SEB will help with pooping too.

I do know about chasing the pills with food or water, but only thanks
to being on this list! When I think of all those years of pilling
Monkey dry....yikes! In fact, it's because I do know of the need to
chase pills with food or water that I needed the gel cap. I can pill
Monkey pretty easily, so I could easily bing 6 pills down her throat
in no time. But knowing she needs food after each one....that's when
six pills became too complicated. I have a way better chance of
getting her to eat after one gel cap than after each of six pills!
And we have been using oil with the gel caps. Susan suggested
butter, so I used Smart Balance, but Monkey didn't like the Smart
Balance, but seems ok with olive oil.

Thanks, I'll check out the site. I know she is already partially
dehydrated now, which is so sad, but she pretty much seems to be
herself. I'm kind of stuck between a rock and rock on this....so I
appreciate your sending me the site. I guess I always thought that
if I stopped the sub-q's she would go down much more quickly than she
has, but it's been a week and a day now, and she still seems pretty
much ok.

stressful on Dezzie I hate to take him to the vet anyway. He is 12
years old and was a semi-feral kitten when I rescued him from a life
on the streets in 1994. So say a prayer for my sweetheart and I'll
keep you all posted on what the vet tells me this week.

He was running a fever of 103.7 at the vet's office and tonight I
re-took it just in case it was high due to stress and it was still
103.3. She gave him a shot of cortisone and an IM of furosemide and
then furosemide pills to give him 2x daily.

I think Q-tips heart condition is progressing. She has been coughing more
recently and seems to rest more. I have also noticed heavier breathing at
times with her. An additional 1/2 Salix brings it under control, but I do
think that her condition is progressing, unfortunately faster than I would
like. We do have a vets appointment on Saturday so I will see what he
says. Maybe this is something that a little tweak in her medications can
remedy, maybe not. She is still eating, cleaning herself, playing with
Mocha and doing other cat things. Wish us luck.

I thought someone said that you don't have to join to take advantage of the
pharmacy. Or maybe that was CostCo.

Hi. My name is Sharon and I am a mother to 2 cats, Taffy, age 5 who
is healthy, and Tigger, 18 months who has a very bad heart murmur (on
a scale from 1-6, vet said he is a 5) and rapid heart beat. Tigger
also suffers from seizures. He is currently taking propanolol for
the rapid heart, 1/2 pill 2 x a day and a 1/4 of a baby aspirin every
3 days.

I was wondering about drug interactions with propanolol and
phenobarb. Is anyone on both?

Sharon,

Hello & welcome.

You can check out drug information here -
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginformation.html

Look up each drug & see if there are any interactions listed. Also, your
pharmacist should be able to answer that question for you.

Have you taken Tigger to see a veterinary cardiologist? It's really the
best since they are better with treatment.

Kimberly,

That happened to Pepper too. They adjusted her meds and she's doing fine.
She has slowed down, but that's just how it goes.

Hi All,

I tried to post this to all, but I think it only went to
the original sender (sorry).

I saw the posts about Sam's Club and wanted to tell you that
at least for atenolol, my pharmacy (Kroger) charges the same
price for atenolol from 10 to 100 pills.

Cozette's original prescription was for 60 atenolol, but as
I didn't know how she would react to the med I filled it
for only 10 or 20 pills the first time and it was $8.00. I have
had it refilled 5-6 times when finally the pharm tech told me
that she filled it for the original 60 pills as the price was
the same. I asked what it was for 80 and 100 pills and
she said, the same $8.00. Apparently that is the minimum
price for filling a prescription.

Given this bit of info, I now ask about all meds and ask
the vet for a new script if the price is the same.

Bridget,
Why didn't they give you any pain meds??? Was there a physical
reason because of her injuries? I've always gotten pain meds when they
were needed, kitties do experience pain, I know some vets don't feel
they do. I've gotten pain meds for my furkids that had dentals and had
teeth pulled!!

Thanks. Hopefully the vet can adjust the meds and she will be ok. I know
one vet had her on chrotrimion for allergies but she hated the medication,
and if you have ever tasted it you would know why. It's SOOO SOOO bitter
and it's hard to get rid of the taste.

The cost of a prescription includes a dispensing fee and the actual cost of
the drugs. If you get more pills at once, then you eliminate multiple
dispensing fees.

Oil has also worked for me, I have used
both flax seed and olive oil. I have mixed
about a teaspoon in with 1/2 of a small (3 oz)
can of cat food. I have also given tuna in oil.

I haven't had the problem of not going at all -
just a hard-stool problem where the whole
thing doesn't come out and kitty runs and
runs and runs away from her bottom and
that which didn't come all the way out.
(gross and hilarious all at the same time)

As others have mentioned, I would also
look into pain meds if you think
that is the problem.

I called the vet to have them note it in her file to check on the coughing
on Saturday. The tech said that they will probably do another x-ray
because of it and check on her medications.

Hi Kimberly!
I'm glad Q-tip is being checked out by the vet. Just a thought,
though.....sometimes when the weather turns hot, animals naturally slow
down. Also, sometimes coughing CAN be attributed to allergies, etc..at
certain times of the year. I don't know if any of this applies, but it
might be worth keeping in mind as a possible "mitigating factor" to Q-tips
behavior. As far as heavier breathing, that might be a concern. Please keep

everyone posted.
Betty

Well with 5 min. before leaving for work this morning. After I took her
temperature since she had slowed down on her eating. She almost ran to the
litter box. The vet told me to use shredded newspaper due to risk of
infection..
but I had the door open and she ran for the real litterbox. I guess she
didn't like the newspaper one and maybe she was holding it for that reason
because she was closed in the bathroom as vets orders. But she pooped only a
little bit, but a milestone. I called the vet this morning and left a message
she pooped and I was going to ask about pain meds, but I never got a call
back. She seems alittle better this evening eating and walking around. I am
not
going to lock her in the bathroom when I am home now.

Hi "strawberry"-

You might look around a little bit - there is a lot of discussion here about
atenolol causing nausea. Most people give their kitties pepcidAC or slippery
elm
bark. There was a good discussion of this subject last week.

I think it is also important to note whether kitty is throwing up (stinky vomit)
or is
regurgitating food - whole pieces of cat food coming back up slightly swollen,
or
whether it is just clear spit or frothy spit. If you have any doubts, talk to
your vet.

My kitty takes her atenolol at 7:30 am and 7:30 pm. I try to give it to
her after she eats, but sometimes that doesn't work out. When it doesn't work
out, she tends to get nauseous - she smacks her lips a lot - and she spits up
about a
silver-dollar sized spot of saliva.

It is important that your kitty eats. If he/she doesn't he/she is at risk
for fatty liver disease.

Nala, Camille and Cozette
