This probably doesn't apply, but.....I used to always, ALWAYS clean
my ferrets' ears, without fail, every two weeks. Then one month when
I forgot to, my vet commented on how clean my ferrets ears were. I
never cleaned them afterwards, mostly out of laziness, but a trucking
business and 17 ferrets will do that to you. Anyway, we have never
had mites or any type of ear infection, NEVER. And my ferrets ears
are clean.

A year and a half ago my oldest girl Luna had orange discharge in her
ears, she had orange scabs around her mouth and her feet pads and
vaginal area were also orange. We thought because of advancing age
she just wasn't keeping herself as clean as she should, so against
better judgement, I began giving her weekly baths. She didn't get
better, or less orangey. My vet spoke to someone she trusts who told
her she thought Luna was adrenal. I took her in the following week
for a bilateral adrenalectomy and TADA! No more orangey color. She
has a beautiful coat, her ears are clear, her feet are normal and all
is well. She's six years old now, and other than being a couch
potato, she's quite normal and happy :-)
