Hello, I am new to the group. I am a pinscherlover and, have always
been. I personally own a poodle now but, I did own and do plan to own
again a pinscher. They are such beautiful dogs.
As President of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, I would be remiss if I didn't
address an issue affecting the health of dogs and the shameful allegations
brought against Atlanta Falcons' quarterback, Michael Vick. As you have heard,
Vick will be in a Federal courtroom in Virginia on July 26 being arraigned on
charges that he sponsored a despicable and appalling dog fighting operation on
his property.
My concern and sympathy of course goes to the dogs who were allegedly affected
and so brutally murdered through the course of this "sport." But, as a
responsible breeder and a fancier, I am also concerned with the general public's
perception of the various breeds involved. According to "The Complete Dog
Book," a publication of the American Kennel Club, there are several breeds
originally involved in the "sport" of dog fighting including the Bulldog.
Originally bred to bait bulls, the purpose of the breed was sorely corrupted and
soon degraded into the extremely cruel "sport" which was banned in England in
1835. Responsible nineteenth century breeders resurrected the breed and set
themselves to the task of breeding for temperament and to eliminate the
undesirable qualities and characteristics. The result of these dedicated
breeders and those of today is the lovable, obedient, and docile dog which
regularly garners large rounds of applause from audiences who attend dog shows
around the country.
Although dog fighting is banned and a felony in the United States, I can assure
you that this disgusting practice is still taking place. From the back alleys
of major cities to the posh and stylish mansions of multi-millionaires, this
repugnant "sport" is just outrageous and offensive, and it's our duty as
responsible breeders who are concerned about the health of our dogs to speak up
and end this criminal activity. I urge you as responsible breeders and dog
lovers to expose these atrocities, to work diligently to eliminate these heinous
deeds and to join the millions who are appalled and bewildered by these cruel
acts.
It is our responsibility to let the general public know that for these precious
canine companions it is all about nature vs. nurture - that these various breeds
involved in the "sport" are not bred this way, but are baited and beaten into
submission and forced to live this life. It's our duty and obligation to take a
stand - for the sake of all our dogs.
Sincerely,
Wayne E. Ferguson

CHF Announces Funding for its First Stem Cell Research Study
-Stem Cell Investigation to Aid Dogs Suffering from Degenerative Myelopathy and
other Diseases-
RALEIGH, NC - A new study using stem cells may offer hope to thousands of dog
owners whose pets suffer from an incurable disease called degenerative
myelopathy (DM). DM, often considered the canine equivalent to amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, and multiple sclerosis in humans, is
a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes dogs to initially lose
muscle strength in their rear legs and gradually paralyzes them completely.
Although German Shepherd Dogs are most commonly affected by the disease, it also
is seen in Boxers, Welsh Corgis, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Irish Setters, Old
English Sheepdogs, and mixed breed pets.
The AKC Canine Health Foundation has approved a grant of $100,000 for Dr.
Richard Vulliet, professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, to
conduct safety trials using such adult stem cells in canine patients suffering
from selected diseases including DM.

Joy,
My computer is so old and so slow, but this was a "lovely" site. <G>
Thanks for sharing it (and it played "I believe in Yesterday")
Growing old is not a "bad thing," its a good thing <G> You don't get
old being a dumb @^* <G>
I haven't a "clue" how long I'll live. But I know this, I will
never "not have a dog or a puppy in my life" no matter how old and
wrinkled and withered I get.
If my dogs outlive us, we have "made arrangements" for them. :) <G>
I can "die" knowing that they will be cared for. We have found
a "friend" who loves our dogs as much as he love his Shelby. We have
left our entire estate in trust to him in exchange for his living
here and taking care of our dogs. And he will :)
I miss EVERY dog and person that was ever close to me at every moment
of the day. . . but I carry those images of those good times with me
and it makes the missing them not so difficult.
When I walk into that light and see Zephyr, Walker, Jake, Rags,
Patches, Dale, Tess, Shadow, Maya, Cruise, Rox, Butch, Duke, Trixie
and every dog I have owned over all these years? And I hear God
say "Welcome" and my dogs all run to me? I will KNOW I am in Heaven!
Growing old is NOT a bad thing! <G> I still run with my dogs <G> I
still "laugh" with them. And at this age? I still "play." <G>
Growing old is knowing you have "lived!" <G> And the memories? They
are knowing you have lived a GOOD life! <G> And I have :)

Canine Comparative Oncology and Genomics Consortium Update [Tuesday, April 24,
2007]
-- Cancer Tissue Bank Prepared to Collect Samples --
The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation (CHF) announces that the
Canine Comparative Oncology & Genomics Consortium (CCOGC) is currently accepting
tumor samples for its important tissue bank. The first three collection sites
will be the Ohio State University, Colorado State University and the University
of Wisconsin. A biospecimen subcommittee was established to finalize the
Standard Operating Procedures for collection and to negotiate contracts with
these first three sites. It is anticipated that collection will begin at all
three sites by May 1st 2007.
"The most essential resource needed to make progress towards the problem of
cancer in dogs is the development of a well-described repository of tissues
(tumor and normal tissue/blood) from tumor bearing dogs," comments Dr. David
Vail, president of the CCOGC. "This repository will allow our finest scientists
access to samples, as well as the clinical data that accompanies each case.
Ultimately, this will accelerate our ability to prevent, diagnose and treat the
devastating aspects of cancer in our pets."

Hi All,
Getting frustrated living in Southern Ca and not enough GPs to
make a major. Sure would like at least a shot at a few - LOL.
Anyway, I know there has been some activity up north in Washington but
have no ideas what shows anyone is going to if they are even still
showing. We will be having shows down here in So Ca almost every
weekend in April and May. We have a very large 4 day show over the
Memorial Day weekend in Pomona. This is the first year they will be
having it indoors which is great news! Sure would be nice to see
some more GPs in this area. If anyone out there thinks they might be
interested, please let me know. Hey maybe someday we might even
have enough GPs on our side of the Country to has a supported entry :)

Hello All,
Kate has asked me to post an update on my German Pinscher Health
Test Database.
As some of you would know, it is something that I've been working
on for quite some time now (a matter of years).
And it is almost ready. Based upon some initial discussions with
some users, I had a bit of rework to do.
The web site is:
http://gpdb.warpspeed.com.au
Currently, it only has the 401 German Pinschers that were
registered in Australia up until mid 2002. This is just my test data. I
have been in the middle of active discussions with the Swedish Kennel Kub,
CKC (Canada), the PSK (Germany), the 1700 odd Finnish
dogs should be available shortly, and of course the more up to date
Australian dogs. What I require is copies (or information on how to
purchase) of the various breed/stud books from the following countries:
America, UK, Norway, and most of the rest of Europe for that
matter.
There are two levels of user to the database.
Users.
Users no longer require special registration, so the general public
can visit the site as a user. Users can view all of the pedigree
information, view all of the health test information, and upload a picture
of a dog. You can also be emailed a PDF version of a 6
generation Pedigree. The pedigree viewing and PDF emails are available for
use now.
Administrators.
Administrators are the only ones who can enter data. There are
already administrators in place for Canada, Sweden and Australia. The Dutch
are likely to be the next.
The general public can view all of the data entered into the
system, and can submit their test results to an Administrator for inclusion
into the system.
By only allowing Administrators to enter data into the system, it
lends credibility and accountability to the database.
By allowing Users (ie the general public) to view all data entered
into the system, it lends transparency to the system.
By not aligning itself to one single individual, a club, a region
or a country, the database is designed to become a truly globally useful
tool for monitoring and planning breeding plans of our wonderful breed.
I am hoping to have it all finished in about a month or so.
However, my B'lana is due to whelp in about two weeks time, so we'll see
how I go.

I have been in contact with Optigen.
Several things were related to me.
They are in the middle of two other studies, and have made progress on
our group of GP paperwork submissions. Decisions have been made on who
and who will not be requested to send in blood samples.
They assure me they will be contacting all who submitted paperwork, to
let them know one way or another on the blood samples.
They intend to include, "pig tail" our group of samples on a larger
cataract study, thus saving the set up time, and expense of an
independent study. This is good news, paving the way for funding. This
is a costly endeavor for any laboratory.
I hope that all who submitted paperwork on affected dogs, will soon be
contacted. I will also be notified when Optigen responds to the
applicants, so I can keep you all posted.
As a final note, I was told that it was very refreshing and evident of
the level of concern and desire for this research, from the GP breed
fancy. Lyn

If a private company such as the DNA Diagnostic Center is used to
determine parentage on a litter that you suspect may have two sires just
remember that to register such a litter with AKC you will have to repeat
the DNA testing using AKC's DNA profile in order to register the
litter(s). If there are multiple sires then the litter gets registered as
separate litters with the separate sires. After you pay the DNA on all
suspected parents and all puppies, and the litter applications of each
litter, the AKC hits you with a fine.

Have you ever had doubt about the correct parentage of a puppy or
litter?
DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC) provides definitive answers to difficult
questions with fast, affordable Canine DNA Parentage Testing.
DNA testing is not all the same. DDC uses a unique and powerful 16-
marker panel as the standard with an additional 20+ markers in
reserve for solving cases involving closely related sires and/ or
motherless cases.
Collecting samples is easy with the cheek swabs and instructions
provided with the free kit.
Test results are guaranteed to be completed within 10 business days
of receipt of the samples. Results are confidential and can used to
make informed decisions prior to registering a litter or pup.
Clients receive a detailed DNA report showing whether a questionable
sire matches along with a laboratory datasheet that includes a DNA
profile for each individual tested.
The cost of testing is $38 per tested canine. For example, a trio
involving dam, pup, and sire is $114

On Christmas morning, I wish...
For every dog searching trash cans for breakfast, a
filled bowl with his name printed in bright letters.
For every dog who slept fitfully last night, chained
in a frozen yard, a soft, warm bed with a person
snoring gently nearby.
For every shelter dog, spending Christmas morning in a
soiled run, a forever home, filled with sounds and
smells of family.
For every "Christmas" puppy given today, a tolerant,
caring owner who won't abandon you as you grow into a
real dog.
For every ailing pet, enough money for your owner to
pay the bills to make you well.
For every lost dog, a clear, safe road, and well
marked path, to lead you home.
For every old and tired friend, a warm fire, and a
soft bed, to ease your aches and pains.
and
For every Heart Dog at the Bridge, a moment when you
know that you are remembered today, missed again, and
loved forever.

Hi Folks-
I wanted to let people know about a recent experience I've had with
one of my Manchester Terriers as its relevant to all breeds of dogs.
My seven year old Manchester tested with low Thyroid on a standard T4
test run at my vets office. I researched the hereditary nature of
thyroid and discovered that Dr. Jean Dodds (HemoPet/HemoLife) has been
doing a lot of research on Thyroid. Dr. Dodds has developed a testing
protocol using a full thyroid panel plus the TGAA test. Dr. Dodds can
determine from this profile whether the dog's thyroid disease is
idiopathic or hereditary. The testing to determine if the Thyroid
condition is the hereditary type can only be completed once a dog
tests low on a T4 and before the dog is placed on any medication. If
dogs are already on medication, they must be removed from Thyroxine
for 90 days before the test can be run.
I was curious to know if this same panel could be used to screen
healthy dogs prior to breeding. Dr. Dodds reports that breeding
animals should be tested with a full thyroid panel yearly and that
running a T4 is not sufficient screening for pre-breeding evaluation.
She also reports that the panel does not predict future thyroid
problems in healthy dogs, only that they are free of thyroid at the
time of the evaluation.

The GPCA board, and it's Health Committee has recently passed this
recommenation.
GPCA Health Committee has determined and the GPCA Board has approved
this recommendation for the best way to decrease the incidence of vWD in
the German Pinscher. Below are the best breeding strategies for
removing or reducing the incidence of vWD type 1: 1). Breed only dogs
DNA tested as clear. All resulting puppies will be free of the defective
gene. 2). Only partner dogs DNA tested as carriers, to dogs DNA
tested as clears. Resulting puppies are predicted to be 50% carriers and
50% clear. All resulting puppies should be DNA tested. Those puppies
carrying the gene should be spayed/neutered. This will eliminate the
gene in that line. VetGen Breeding strategies link:
