I gave my crabs some grapes (2 or 3) left on the empty stalk . I hung it
from the second level. to my amusement they climbed up and down and they ate
the stalk part, not the actual grapes!!!!

The grapes have since been removed as they went yuck fairly quick (it's hot
here!!) but I left the stalk in the tank. they love it!

cooked for them. That being said, it is strongly stated to steam any forms of
shell fish prior to giving them to hermies due to shell diseases.

I gave mine half an ear of corn this summer, they loved eating it and climbing
on it, so it was food and a toy in one.

I didn't know the carrots had to be boiled.... i just wash them and slice
them up, then put a big chunk in their dish. Our one crab, Herb, likes to
sit on top of his food while he eats in. I also put big chunks of apple
(without the peel), it's so funny watching him eat!

as far as I know you should not give them anything with spices, sauces, or
table salt. I gave mine cat food the other day but it didn't look like they
touched it. They also seem to like it when i mash stuff, like mashed sweet
potato, mashed apple, or apple sauce, mashed pumpkin, or canned pumpkin.

There are many things they cannot eat and I would strongly recommend to not give
them cat food or dog food. You also want to avoid any human grade salts and any
foods that have had pesticides used on them. You should also try to avoid
commercial crab foods due to the preservatives used in them. Here is a site that
is packed with some very good information:

http://hermitcrabcuisine.com/

Also if you would like to look I have a store that sells different foods and
mixes for crabs just look in my signature.

Visit my store for some healthy choices for your crabs diet.

I keep reading that you need to keep their food different from day to day
because they can get picky.

So can they eat baby food or wet cat or dog food?

What about tomatoes? Are those ok on the fresh produce side of things?

Also, can I prepare stuff in advance & keep it in the refrigerator (for just a
couple days of course) and will it still be accepted by the crabs, or would they
reject it? It seems silly to boil only one carrot at a time, but if that's what
needs to be done...

Is there anything they CAN'T eat?

Usually similar to humans, the larger the hermie the older it is. They are very
special to have lived so long and it is so sad at such a `senior' age they were
captured to live the rest of their lives within glass walls.

Are they just older crabs that have gotten big, or are they a specific species?
I saw one once at a pet store. He was VERY gregarious and friendly and even
though I was kinda scared I held him (by the shell), which sent all the kids
standing around squealing. But I don't remember exectly what he looked like. It
was several years ago. But I remember him coming waaaaay out of his shell & I
got to see his four back "inside" legs which TOTALLY freaked me out because I
didn't know that herms had those as I knew nothing about them at the time.

Anyway, are they special in some way, or just big, older crabs?

More great advice, thanks, Ladybug!

Yes, I wasn't very impressed with the books (which are hardly more than
pamphlets), and as I come across conflicting information on the web...well,
that's why I'm here on the forums! :D

Yes, I wouldn't add a Brevimanus right away. I'll see how well I can keep the
more common hermies thriving. So far they're rather bored and/or timid still,
but I have a whole ton of stuff coming in the mail for their tank. My local pet
store didn't have much of anything and it's an hour drive to Petco...or
Petsmart, I can't remember which one it is. So hopefully once I get them a
rockin' crabitat, they'll have a party or something. Or at least be more active.

One guy in particular (Harley) is active once he's out of the tank. I had him
out last night on my bed and he was just cruisin' all over the place, climbing
on the "mountains" that my pillows & sheets/blankets made.

I LOVE white vinegar! I keep gallon jugs of it around.

Craigslist is, unfortunately, useless in my neck of the woods unless you're
willing to drive quite a while cuz I'm in the boonies. We have a local Freecycle
network, but not a Craigslist yet. :(

Thanks for the advice on leaker tanks at pet stores. I was also thinking of
looking at Goodwill this weekend.

Thanks for your help!!

(M)...Majority of books are outdated as well as only have very basic info about
caring for hermies while living in captivity if any at all.
Some of the information isn't quite correct either. As for reading information
on the internet, the internet can be full of good information, but at the same
time not so good. It depends on where one reads, including forums. Please refer
to the Crab Street Journal care sheets, articles and faq's.

Being new to hermies I would strongly recommend to wait for a spell prior to
getting any of the more exotic hermies. Due to their shipping and such they are
much more sensitive and at times even experienced crabbers have a difficult time
keeping them alive.
But my indo's here are not aggressive, but then again are not quite what I call
shy either. I have had them though for a little over 5 years.

Good ole fashioned white distilled vinegar and water. Wipe down inside (and out)
with the vinegar paying special attention to the silicone on the inside of the
tanks corners and floor. Rinse until all vinegar smell is gone.
Depending on how soon you would want a tank, one can get one for nearly nothing

When in doubt the best thing one can do is leave the hermie be. By bothering
them it can only stress them even further. If they have passed there is NOTHING
we can do, but if they are molting bothering them can be harmful or lethal. Now
depending on the pet store conditions and how you helped him adjust.. couple
links for reading:

http://crabstreetjournal.com/xoops/modules/news/article.php?storyid=165

http://crabstreetjournal.com/xoops/modules/news/article.php?storyid=57

Please leave this hermie be now that you have checked and know he is alive.

If the smell is very strong and fishy....dig up your crab. In my experience the
crab is dead. If so I am sorry. I hate losing my little guys.

ladybug, I've had Cuba for about 1.5 months, and he's been acting "strange"
for about 3 weeks, and very lethargic for the past two weeks. He is only
partially under the soil, and we are using half sand, and half Forest
Bedding terrain, about an inch deep.

House or crabitat on fire, if one can literally see one hermie eating another,
substrate temperature entirely too hot, (ex: about 100+* F) definite
identification of a hermie parasitic pest crawling throughout the substrate
and on the hermie, mold growing throughout and down in the substrate.
1.5 months is no time for a hermie to be burrowed. After about 4 months one may
want to get the pacing slippers out and begin to practice a pace.

What constitutes an emergency to dig up the crabs? I have 5 that have been down

Without knowing your actual tank conditions and how long you have had Cuba there
is no way of knowing what maybe going on. Some substrates are known to have a
stronger smell than others too. It is highly recommended not to dig up a hermie

I was going to clean our aquarium and take out all the old terrain that has
been in there for about a month (have been scooping regularly though) after
our one crab Herb came out of his molt. However, now that he is molted, our
other one is acting very lethargic and has burried himself into the sand. I
don't want to dig him up to put in a hospital cage for his molt, so we are
using a cage divider. However, the tank smells very very bad, and is
starting to stink up the main floor of our house. Should I take the
possibly molting crab out and clean the tank, or do you think we should wait
until he is finished?

Is there another reason Cuba could be so lethargic? other than going into a
molt? Our other one, who finished his molt about a week ago has been eating,
drinking, bathing, climbing and having a great time hiding his food (which I
dig up in the morning). So I know that he is not the one making the stink.

Thanks for the compliment. To answer your question I suppose you could do that
if you like. I myself am not a huge fan of dehydrated food but I know some
people are. I do not add anything to any of my foods or mixes I simply
slice/cut/chop/etc..., them up and let them dehydrate. So if you would like to
try some that is fine but I would recommend ordering just a plain food and not a
mix b/c some of my mixes have Worm Castings in them and I am NOT a fan of eating
worm castings...LOL!!!

Spidtat your site is looking good and a bit on the delicious side as well! ;)
Now I have an off the wall question here being some of the foods you have
listed, are they also human safe? As in if one would order the dried peaches,
could one also eat those and share them with their hermies? ;)
