Description
Temporary home for "The Society for Horned Lizard Preservation". A group for the study, conservation, and limited captive care of Horned Lizards(HLs) aka "Horny Toads" (Phrynosoma). Anyone keeping Horned Lizards in captivity should be properly skilled. They are not well suited as pets. Many species are protected in their native states. Assistance is given with the ultimate view toward the best interests of the ANIMAL. This group is conservation oriented FIRST. Care for you wild caught pet - SECOND. Unqualified persons who have captured a Horned Lizard and want to know how to keep it will be disappointed in the advice they receive. This group is not here to tell you where to find or how to keep a HL you have captured without permit or proper experience.
No HLs will be allowed to be offered for sale or trade here, legally collected or not. Placement of HLs in qualified homes will be facilitated if they cannot be returned to their home range (rescues). Legally obtained HLs that need sanctuary, will be at the discretion of the administrator to determine that they are being transfered to skilled keepers (foster volunteers). This position is also to prevent further exploitation of these lizards in the pet trade. This group offers HL discussion, care references, harvester ants for order, scientific research papers, and general reptile husbandry topics. There are 14 recognized species of Horned Lizard in N. America. 8 of these species are native to the US.
The official group for the author of "The Horned Lizard Manual". Listed rescuer with anapsid.org. Founder of Wichita Falls Reptile Rescue, North Tx contact for Gulf Coast Turtle & Tortoise Soc., Member of National Wildlife Rehabilitators Assoc., and founding member of The Society for Horned Lizard Preservation.
